It took Prince Paul an incredible four years to release a follow-up to his critically acclaimed 1999 album, Prince Among Thieves. What’s up with that? As Paul himself would say, it’s just the Politics of the Business, baby. Featuring old friends and collaborators, elderspokesmen and newcomers, poets, comedians, and off-the-beaten-track MCs, Politics takes a 360-degree look at what it takes to survive the music-industry shell game. Wildy creative and sprawling as you’d expect, the album juxtaposes straight-up hip-hop tracks with radio voiceovers, acoustic hip-hop poetry, and a "special word from DJ Premier," whose gravel-voiced pronouncement that "hip hop is wack right now y’all" makes you want to laugh and cry all in the same breath. On the music tip, Politics is Paul’s most experimental offering, signaling his desire to make his music "go even further undergound." Hope it’s not another four years before he resurfaces! --Rebecca Levine

5 out of 5 stars YA'LL ARE WACK IF YA HATE ON P.O.T.B.......2006-09-04

Politics of the buisness is another classic by the most brilliant producer of all time Prince Paul. If you love the great production and long list of very gifted and great M.C's on his previous album A prince amoung thieves then you will definitley love Politics of the buisness. My man Paul came thru once again with track after track of ill nasty beats that are definitley a few steps ahead of the rest of the game and the M.C's on this album are the illest in the game. A true hip hop fan who appreciates ill wordplay and fantastic beats would certainly love this album but for y'all who want to hate ya'll can just go bump G-unit and Daddy Yankee and all that other wack crap out there!

5 out of 5 stars 2006 and still burnin' 'em!.......2006-02-16

Alright, many crew obviously don't know what the hell is going on here. Fair enough. Thinking of the tracks from 'How's your girl?' they played on the radio, I can guess what some folk may have been expecting of PP and why, maybe, they couldn't get with this.

In short, this album is a cut above the rest. I only scored a copy mid last year and haven't dropped it from my 'frequent player' list since then.

The MC's represent some of the finest from the 90's and most of them are still controlling the underground scene (if not starting their take-over i.e Dumile).

The beats, though not as mainstream as previous efforts, are sparse, melodic, soulful, bombastic.. freakin' whatever.. Alls I can say is, Prince Paul is either a step ahead of the pack (since day one, in fact), or crew just follow his lead and try to copy his style.

Don't sleep.

"Can we be out!?!"

1 out of 5 stars A bunch of guest artists, but no talent.......2005-10-27

There are a bunch of cameo appearances by various important people, but then the whole cd just falls flat. If you're going to spend two hours wages on a cd, there are a hundred better cds out there. In five years, if not already, this will be forgotten.

4 out of 5 stars I absolutely hate it...and kind of like it at the same time........2005-03-27

I respect Paul's view of the music industry, and in exectuting a record which basically mocks the modern sounds. I totally get what he was trying to do here..and I give him points for creating something that is sonically different from his other works, and doing it pretty well. The problem is that..since the music for the most part DOES sound like modern hip hop, it was very hard for me to listen to it. To me it doesn't show Prince Paul for who he is, which is what I really wanted to hear. The only track that I could really feel personally is "Chubb Rock, can you please pay Paul the $2200 that you owe him." It uses the beat from "Pease Poridge" from De Le Soul is Dead. It is the last track on the cd (sort of) and is the antithesis of everything you have heard before it...which is why I decided to give this album 4 stars instead of the 3 I was initially going to give it. That was a great way to end a album about politics...by basically lauging in it's face.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff. predictably good stuff........2004-09-03

i was introduced to this album by myself. but i have always enjoyed paul's uniquely constructed beats and overall album structures (gravediggaz, for instance). this album has everything that a casual and hardcore hip hop head(pause) would like. the beats are dope but not too "underground", the lyrics are fairly simple and accessible and the skits are enjoyable. the best joint is "so what". masta ace is truly one of the most consistent emcees to ever utter a rhyme, period. my man pretty ugly complements the beat pretty well. hidden tracks are dope too. to summarize, prince paul drops another dope album that will be unconscionably overlooked. so do yourself a favor and cop the album. peace.
