At a moment when mainstream music is clogged with a surfeit of stale, formulaic songs and huge egos, Dan Zanes has found the Drano. Family Dance, his second kids' record (after the fab Rocket Ship Beach), again comes through with big-name helpers--Sandra Bernhard, Rosanne Cash, and Loudon Wainwright III among them--but instead of assembling a mixed bag of self-important numbers, Zanes, who produced and plays on all but one of 15 tracks, maintains a cohesive vibe that's low-key and playful. Yet here's a disc that's all over the map, genre-wise. Gruffster Rankin' Don, a.k.a. Father Goose, rasta-raps his way through "The Hokey Pokey" and "Skip to My Lou," the Sandy Girls carry us off to a colorful Caribbean village for "Linstead Market," Cash folks up "Fooba Wooba John," and Leadbelly's "Rock Island Line" makes a stop in Memphis bluesland. Zanes's originals--"Jump Up," "Wonder Wheel," and "Thrift Shop," performed as a duet with Bernhard--manage to be wholesome, happy, and hip all at once, no mean feat. But it's the music making on Family Dance that impresses most of all. Fiddles, beatboxes, mandolins, tubas, banjos, and concertina elbow their way onto these tracks, and they're balanced by Zanes's arrangements and backup singer Barbara Brousal's graceful voice and guitar work. Kids 2 and up will be likewise captivated by the chunky board-book packaging, again with original artwork. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:
Two weeks..........2007-06-12
It took us two weeks to find out what our daughter was happily going around the house singing (3 at the time). And finally Sesame Street came on, and she said her song was on. It was 'Mailti' by Dan Zanes, and once that was
on my daughter just danced and sang away.
Since then we have embraced Dan's music into our family music circle. The lyrics are clean and catchy, and the rythm is simple enough for even a child to keep up with.
Most tracks are ok, but the two by "Father Goose" are awful........2007-05-04
My son loves the music, but the singing by "Father Goose" is unbearably nasal and off-pitch on "Holey Pokey" and "Skip to My Lou".
Those two tracks make me cringe and I skip them every time my son plays the CD. However, several songs are wonderfully musical. For example, Linstead Market is just delightful.
Let yourself go..........2007-04-14
T. Bittner from Peroria should read her review again.
"My kids seem to like it (the ones I don't hit the skip button for) but I am not going to sacrifice myself when there are plenty of other recordings that they and I both like."
If you don't want to 'sacrifice' once in a while and let your kids grow and find what they like, leave the room. A little fun and free expression is what childhood is all about! Sometimes it is about what they like. This is how they find out who THEY are.
Overall, my son likes the music. It is especially fun to waltz with him in my arms to 'Streets of New York'. Thanks to Dan Zanes, my son can find out it is fun to mix the old with the new.
hard for Mom to tolerate.......2007-02-19
I love folk music, but this CD contains only 2 songs that I like and only 2 others that I can even tolerate. My kids seem to like it (the ones I don't hit the skip button for) but I am not going to sacrifice myself when there are plenty of other recordings that they and I both like.
Why don't I like it? Zanes has a croak similar to Bob Dylan's; with all due respect to Dylan's great songwriting, I don't enjoy his singing. Zane's friends vary in talent but none of them seem able to harmonize together. The songs in a minor key are particularly grating, such as "All Around the Kitchen" which many people seem to like, though I can't see why. The instrumentation is nothing special either. Don't buy this just because you like the song "Jump Up" from Sesame Street; you should listen before you buy to make sure the rest of it matches your taste.
House Party and Family Dance.......2007-02-18
If you are looking for something different from the typical childrens music, this is it. My family has been addicted to Laurie Berkner since the summer and we needed something different. We are enjoying Dan Zanes so much. We find ourselves singing and dancing along in our kitchen and our van. This afternoon we were listening to Waltzing Matilda and my 4 year old daughter stopped playing and announced that her grandpa would love to dance to this song! We also love all the spanish that is mixed into the music. We like to try and guess what they are singing about. I am so glad we have added them to our collection.

Customer Reviews:
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Another Great Album by Elton John .......2007-03-28
This album is great. Songs like "Dear John", "I am Your Robot", "Ball and Chain", "Spiteful Child", and "Where Have All The Good Times Gone" are just great songs. I like it because of the great melodies and hooks. It doesn't have any fluff, or slow crap that plagued Elton in his later years. This is 90% Rock, 10% Nice Slow Songs, and 100% great material. "Jump Up!" is a must for any Rock 'n Roll Fan's Musical Collection. I have all of Elton's music, and when ever I am in the mood for Elton John, I frequently find myself turning "Jump Up!" on. Buy this Album, you'll be glad you did.
One Of Elton's Very Best And Still Holds Up Nearly Twenty Five Years Later............2006-12-29
"Jump Up!" was one of Elton John's best albums from the 1980s, and I think it still holds up quite well today. It was Elton's first album with producer Chris Thomas, who would produce most of Elton's 1980s and 1990s albums, and the last album featuring songs co-written with lyricist Gary Osborne. Recorded on the West Indian island of Montserrat, "Jump Up!" truly captures Elton at one of his happiest moments in the 1980s, backed ably by a fine studio band which included long-time associate, bassist Dee Murray, and legendary studio session drummer Jeff Porcaro, best known for his work with his band Toto and of course, with Michael Jackson too. The album harkens back to Elton's early to mid 1970s sound, with an eclectic range of pop ballads and uptempo rockers. The two songs which most listeners will recognize are the Elton John/Gary Osborne ballad "Blue Eyes", which was recorded later by none other than Frank Sinatra, and the Elton John/Bernie Taupin ballad "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)", which is Elton's bittersweet homage to the late John Lennon; both songs still rank as among the finest ballads ever composed by Elton in his nearly forty-year long career. And yet these aren't the only fine songs on "Jump Up!"; even the song which I regard as the weakest on the album, the Elton John/Bernie Taupin ballad "All Quiet On The Western Front" - the songwriting team's musical tribute to World War One's Western Front - I'd regard as one of their most memorable compositions. In other words, "Jump Up!" is that rarity among Elton John albums, one which truly doesn't have a lackluster song on it (My other favorites include the Elton John/Gary Osborne ballad "Princess", the Elton John/Bernie Taupin Philly Soul tribute rocker "Where Have All the Good Times Gone", the Elton John/Gary Osborne rocker "Dear John" (It features a fine guitar solo from none other than Pete Townshend of The Who!), the Elton John/Tim Rice ballad "Legal Boys" (their very first collaboration, long before Disney's "The Lion King"), and last, but not least, the Elton John/Bernie Taupin cyberpunkish rocker "I Am Your Robot".). Without question, I would regard "Jump Up!" as an essential Elton John album that should be acquired by both diehard fans and others interested in his music.
Not bad 25 years on. . ........2006-08-10
Jump Up was recorded and released during Elton's relationship with Geffen Records. While the albums that came during that period were not the monster hits of his 70s work (Captain Fantastic, Rock of the Westies), there is still some strong performances included.
The opening cut, Dear John, features guitar work from none other than Pete Townshend. Legal Boys has words from Tim Rice, who Elton later collaborated with on the Lion King Soundtrack.
A misnomer from this period is that there was some type of seperation between John and longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin. Not true -- in fact, one of the duos most meaningful works appears on Jump Up -- Empty Garden (Hey, Hey Johnny), a tribute to John Lennon at the time of his murder.
Gary Osborne is the other writer on the disc and teams with John for the hit Blue Eyes, a ballad that still stands strong.
For Elton enthusiasts, the album is a must for a complete collection. For others, it's still a worthy listen.
Jump Up! Qualifies As Classic Elton.......2006-08-06
While the album art and photos on Jump Up! are almost comically dated, the music, for the most part, stands up to time's test quite well. Opening with the uber-catchy 'Dear John' (which stands as one of the most clever lyrics produced by Elton's creative tryst with Gary Osbourne) and moving forward with the Taupin-penned 'Spiteful Child,' Osbourne's 'Ball & Chain,' and the first collaboration between Elton and Tim Rice, 'Legal Boys,' this is a strong, energetic record that, twenty-four years on, is still worth hearing. Okay, so 'I Am Your Robot' is a clear relic of the pre-digital age (Jump Up! was probably the first record of Elton's to come out on CD as a new release, come to think of it), sounding kind of naive and quaint here in 2006, and 'Princess' and 'Where Have All The Good Times Gone' also sound very 1982, but so what? Like the album art, these songs serve to remind us of a time that was less cynical and more relaxed than our own time of higher technology and temperatures, lower government and expectations, senseless international conflicts and economic lunacy on an unprecedented scale. Either way, like the three that open the album, songs like Osbourne's laid-back 'Blue Eyes,' as well as Taupin's John-Lennon tribute 'Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)' and 'All Quiet On The Western Front' will survive in any climate, whatever the state of the world, providing pleasure and escape from the trials of mundane existence in any place and time. From our music, what more can we ask?
Fans can never be objective..........2006-05-06
From the OBJECTIVE reviewer...Like 21 at 33 an otherwise lackluster release gets bumped to 3 stars on the strength of two classic tracks, "Blue Eyes" and "Empty Garden." On the other hand, since those songs are available on Elton collection CDs, maybe this is worth skipping.

Fun and diverse.......2000-02-02
This is a great compliation, headed by the New Morty Show's fantastic version of "Enter Sandman". Fun and diverse this collection is a great way to get into the neo-swing movement. It will give you an idea who is out there and what kind of music they play.

Great Album.......2007-01-10
If you are a Roomful of Blues fan -this is a great ablum for your collection. A good mix of swing and traditional blues. May not be as strong on swing blues as some of thier latest recordings, but still very solid.
Fabulous music.......2003-12-25
Blues, swing and rock 'n' roll combine for an unbeatable CD. I have to be careful when playing this on the car stereo--I won't hear an ambulance siren even if it's right next to me! "Blind love," "Turn it on, turn it up," "If you know it" and "Marie, Marie" are my favorites because they best feature Sugar Ray Norcia's stunning voice. This CD is great fun. Don't hesitate to buy it.
Still a Great Blues Band!.......2003-10-14
These guys still got it. If you don't like Roomful of Blues,
I don't like you!
One of the great Boston area blues bands at its best.......2001-03-14
This is a great CD, lots of terrific mainstream blues with plenty of swing thrown in so you can dance to it! I'm ordinarily not a big fan of horn sections, but there's no way you can't love this if you're a blues fan.
One of the Best they've recorded.......2000-10-10
Although I'm a Roomful fan who misses the "old crew" (Robillard, Piccolo, Copley, Porky etc...), this CD can still be considered one of Roomful's best ever.
Of note is the lead singer/harp player Sugar Ray Norcia. His vocals are terrific.
Norcia's rendition of Percy Mayfield's "Danger Zone" is .... and I can't believe I'm saying this ... even better -- more soulful than Ray Charles' version. And Charles, in my opinion is about as close to "God" as a Soulman can get!!
Here, "Danger Zone" is THE PERFECT song. The arrangement is the best, done at a PERFECT tempo, sung perfectly. It opens with an unbelievable Bari-Sax solo that is the knife that plunges deep into your heart. Not an easy task with a BARI! Making things worse (or better), Rich Latalle's Alto Sax solo finishes you off by twisting that knife in deeper again, and again. But, somehow, Norcia's vocals are so smooth -- you'll keep comin' back for more! It hurts so good!!
There's a lot more to this CD too -- but, this review would be too long if I continued to describe.
This CD is definately worth getting, even if your an old Roomful purist.

Kashmar's powerhouse vocals, sophisticated yet gritty harmonica playing, and imaginative material earned him a "Best New Artist Debut" nomination by the Blues Music Foundation. He's played throughout North America and in Europe, winning new fans at every stop.
On "Wake Up & Worry", Mitch Kashmar continues to evolve as an artist. Joined by an all-star ensemble that includes Junior Watson, Rusty Zinn, John Marx and Alastair Greene on guitars, along with support from Hollywood Blue Flames alumni Fred Kaplan on piano and Richard Innes on drums, this album is sure to please critics and fans alike. Add in a quirky sense of humor and a sly wit, along with deep-chested blues vocals that sound natural, unforced, and unlike anyone else on the scene today, and you've got one of this generation's most complete blues artists.
