Oh Perilous World is the sixth release by Rasputina, a singularly inventive outfit led by Melora Creager. A cellist herself, she creates a frontline of multiple cellos. Eschewing the faux-classical shenanigans of the Electric Light Orchestra, she welds the instruments with sensibilities that evoke everyone from Van Dyke Parks to Tom Waits. The album opens with the lines "In the spring of 1315 there began an era of unpredictable weather. It did not lift until 1851. You remember 1816 as the year without a summer." The dozen songs address the set's title with a mix of journalism and poetry. Creager draws directly from the daily news, but rather than paddling about in simple reportage, she uses phrases and ideas as starting points for her rich and multifaceted results. She moves easily from ballads laced with dulcimers to spiky rockers sporting fuzzed cellos and propulsive drums. The arrangements, which sometimes include layered vocal choruses, utilize complexity with natural grace. --David Greenberger

Oh Perilous World is the long awaited new studio album from chamber-rock trio Rasputina. Deciding current world events were more bizarre than anything from the distant past, Rasputina foundress Melora Creager culled words, phrases and whole stories from the Internet that especially intrigued her to create the lyrical inspiration for the album. Rasputina has built a loyal and committed following over six albums through their constant live recitals.

4 out of 5 stars Among Rasputina's best.......2007-07-21

Like all the reviewers here, I'm a long time fan. I have to say that I had to warm up to this album. I did not think it was very good at first but am now glad that I spent the time to get to know it better.
As with all Rasputina albums, I think most listeners will enjoy about three quarters of the album, love two or three tracks especially, and absolutely hate two or three of the tracks.
The curious thing about Rasputina is that sometimes one can go from hating one of the songs to loving it (I just did that with "Incident in a Medical Clinic.")
Melora continues here to expand her vocal repertoire. Melora shifts from saccharine crooner to carny caller to slide guitar blues singer to vaudeville singer. Some of the songs also switch personalties with such abandon that at times I was reminded of the work of Raymond Scott.
Yes definitely get the bonus CD.

5 out of 5 stars We Never Even Had A Nightmare Or A Beautiful Dream About This..........2007-07-16

Oh Perilous World, Rasputina's fifth original CD release, brilliantly blends current world events with their classic historical style, all fused together with cellos, drums, and haunting vocals.

This album, like most of their previous efforts, is a concept album, following this storyline: Mary Todd Lincoln is Queen of Florida, and her blimp armies have attacked Pitcairn Island, where Fletcher Christian's son Thursday ("played" by drummer Jonathan TeBeest) emerges as a resistance icon.

Melora Creager (the brains behind Rasputina) "wrote the songs featured on Oh Perilous World over the last two years after deciding current world events were more bizarre than anything she could scrounge up from the distant past." And indeed, subjects range from the 9/11 attacks, Osama Bin Laden. Hurricane Katrina, Avian Flu, and the like. Because the subjects are blended in with the concept theme, I don't feel they are presented in an in-your-face way.

"The songs were recorded primarily with cello and drums, but despite this simple palette Rasputina create a wide range of textures and effects, including what seems to be electric guitars and violins -- but is actually cunningly played and recorded cello."

My favorite songs are "1816, The Year Without a Summer"; "Draconian Crackdown"; "We Stay Behind"; and "The Infidel is Me."

IF YOU ARE A DEVOUT FAN, I recommend you buy the CD from their website, as you may still be able to get a copy of the limited edition, which has a bonus disc featuring three additional songs and six of their infamous skits. The bonus disc tracks are as follows:

1. The Question Of Time
2. Identity Tokens
3. The Humanized Mice
4. The Pruning (Pat O'Brian / Access Hollywood Mix)
5. Flood Corps
6. Incapable Of Regret
7. Desert Vampire
8. The Contractors
9. Infidel (Instrumental Demo)

I think the skit "The Pruning (Pat O'Brian / Access Hollywood Mix)" alone is worth the extra money, as it's a hilarious recording of (someone who sounds a lot like) Pat O'Brian speaking the lyrics of the song over the music. It's truly funny!

All in all, these girls are my favourite band in the world, and Melora's addition of Sarah Bowman on second chair only reinforces that fact.

(All quotes are from Rasputina's website.)

5 out of 5 stars Unlike Anything You've Ever Heard Before..........2007-07-10

...and I mean that in a good way. This album and this band are proof that the best music and most talented artists ARE NOT ON YOUR RADIO.

Let me add that I am not your typical Rasputina fan. I'm a blue-collar male who is pushing 40 and listens to artists like Tool, Chris Cornell, and the Beatie Boys. I happened upon a review for "Cabin Fever" in Blender Magazine and was intrigued by the promise of "Gothic Chamber Rock" and I bought the CD without ever having heard a note of music from Rasputina. I was blown away by that album and quickly bought up all their previous CDs. I've bought every subsequent release via pre-order because I'm that excited to hear what Melora has cooked up next.

This album is absolutely brilliant. I was worried when I listened to it the first time through because I didn't like it and every other Rasputina album hooked me instantly. By the third time through, I liked it and by the 5th time I thought this could be the best Rasputina album yet. I love every song on this album with the possible exception of track 10, "We Stay Behind".

I don't know that this would be the best CD for a Rasputina newbie. For that I would recommend "Cabin Fever".

Do a lesser known artist a favor and tell a friend about Rasputina. Most will be glad you did.

4 out of 5 stars You're showing every sign of losing your heart.......2007-07-10

Gothic alt-rock played with cellos -- it sounds pretty horribly precious, doesn't it?

And it would be, if Rasputina weren't such great musicians, who could mingle tragic history stories with quirky chamberpop and classical instrumentation. And their latest album "Oh Perilous World" comfortably straddles the fence between rock and cabaret, and seems to be having fun while it does so.

It opens with a creepy, ominous cello melody, and Melora Creager's girlish voice telling us solemnly, "In the spring of 1315/There began an era of unpredictable weather/It did not lift until 1851/You remember 1816 as the year without a summer." It's a rambling, weird song about Freemasons, Ben Franklin, Frankenstein, volcanoes and other such subjects.

Things get even stranger with the quirky chamber-rocker that follows ("choose me to be your champion/I am possessing of a very righteous style!"), not to mention the string of melodies that follow: clashing cellopop, gothic balladry, a rapid-fire rocker, a tinkly pop song, rambling interludes, and the sweeping beauty of "Old Yellowcake" and the sly "A Retinue Of Moons/The Infidel Is Me."

Rasputina is one of those genrebusting bands -- they manage to keep themselves rooted in rock, pop, chamber music, and still sound like they live in a big old ruined Victorian house with some friendly ghosts and a lot of newspapers. They're a little bit of everything, and have kept their quirk.

Obviously the main instrument here is cello. Lots of cello. And Creager knows how to mold it to her purpose, whether it's a melodious sweep, an awkward twang, or urgent dark chords like an electric guitar. But to keep it from getting monotonous, there's some fuzzy guitar in "Draconian Crackdown" that takes over the song, as well as a gentle piano in the ballads, and a jingle of bells here and there.

Creager has a pretty, girlish voice, but she sings some pretty weird, sometimes gruesome songs about broken butterflies, blood-spattered lace curtains and the descendants of mutineers. Some are taken from actual history. And how can you ignore lyrics so quirky as to tell you that a reaper is inthe flowerbed? Or that "I have charisma and of course a winning smile/I stand accused of being an audacious redeemer/Not a charge I can deny."

Full of history and dark humor, "Oh Perilous World" is a pretty solid chamber-rock album that has its moments of excellence. Definitely worth hearing, if nothing else for its cello playing.

5 out of 5 stars I think I know what "D" stands for.......2007-07-01

"Oh Perilous World" is another step in the direction hinted at w/ the highly underrated "Cabin Fever". This time out we have a kind of concept album w/ lyrical content influenced by current events more so than on previous releases. Even when the subject matter veers toward the more familiar Rasputina territory of centuries past, it draws interesting parallels between our civilization's past and present, often pointing out how little we seem to learn from our mistakes.
Musically, Melora Creager continues to move forward ensuring that no Rasputina record sounds like what she's done before. The dulcimer that first showed up on "Cabin Fever" plays a more prominent role along w/ some wonderful recorder playing by Ms. Creager and some piano provided by (official member since "Frustration Plantation") drummer Jonathan TeBeest. This is all anchored quite expertly by the cello playing of Melora and new 2nd cellist Sarah Bowman.
The melodies are, as always, gorgeous and the band balances the classical & heavy elements (along w/ some wonderful psychedelic moments) beautifully.
If you can, get the deluxe limited version. The bonus CD compliments the album even better than the one that accompanied the limited version of the last disc.
Lets hope that more people come to realize what a national treasure we in the U.S. have in Rasputina. Support the lovely, dangerous art of Rasputina while they are around. You don't run across music this great every day.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album. From A Great Band........2007-07-07

I saw these guys in Cleveland opening for Poison and Ratt, and They were an amazing opening band with a great live show. This album really shows the talent behind the band. It rocks harder and better with each listen.

It's like the 80's all over. So if you like 80's pop metal, then i'd reccomend this album to you.

4 out of 5 stars From the depths of the 80s.......2007-06-07

Vains of Jenna appear as if they've come from the 80s with their wild hair, ripped clothing, and bandanas, but they've been together only since 2005. Considering their style of music is very similar to that of Faster Pussycat, Motley Crue, and perhaps even Guns N' Roses, the look is practically a requisite when mentally picturing the images of these famous bands. Thanks to Bam Margera and his record label, Filthy Note, Vains of Jenna have received more publicity than they would be getting with another unfamiliar label. However, notorious label or not, they're quietly making a name for themselves.

Lit Up/Let Down is untamed, dirty, and fun - this is no surprise since the lineup consists of four young musicians. The songs Vains of Jenna have put together are impressive, but they could be more polished. The vocals aren't exactly beautiful, and the lyrics aren't brilliant, but this is how it should sound if an 80s emulation is the motive (and it is, according to the band's biography). The riffs are grungy and catchy, and the last two acoustic songs are nice endings to the album. Simply put, Lit Up/Let Down rocks. Expect greater things in the future, though.

2 out of 5 stars not worth it.......2007-05-29

sorry - I was dissappointed...weak material. one or 2 strong songs but sloppy playing and not inventive riffs detract.

4 out of 5 stars 1987 with a twist..........2006-12-05

much in the same vein as the best of the Sunset Strip
(Guns N'Roses, L.A. Guns, Faster Pussycat), Vains of
Jenna cleverly mix snarl and attitude with catchy hooks.
"Hard to Be Vain" and "Lit Up/Let Down" are both killer
tracks, and there's no filler to be found...

5 out of 5 stars these guys rock hard!!.......2006-11-25

i fist heard of these guys in the metal edge magazine, and always looking for some more good music i decided to give them a try.man am i glad i did, this album is awesome, every song is great.the band at times sound a bit like faster pussycat,or old motley crue, and sometimes a hint of guns and roses. The guitar work is very good and the lyrics.give this album a try you wont be sorry, they are a very good band and i cant wait to hear some more from them!!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic performances........2005-05-02

"Maldoror" is a unique concept, producer Michael Montes put text rom Comte de Lautreamont in front of Friedlander-- the master cellist read the text and improvised what he saw. The results are nothing short of breathtaking.

If you're not familiar with Friedlander's work with John Zorn and others, you're likely in for quite a pleasant surprise-- I can think of very few musicians I have had the pleasure of hearing who possess such a stunning command of their instrument as Friedlander does. His technique is overwhelming, particularly in pizzicato, and as an improviser, he is agile and inventive. These lead to the great strength of this record, namely that Friedlander can through his technique express something much more visceral than one would expect from any musical performance.

The improvisations are largely oriented on texture and space, whether arco or pizzicato-- each note counts, as does each lack of note. Friedlander may have an overwhelming technique, but what makes both him and this recording brilliant is his ability to make decisions about when to show it and when not to. "The Wind Groans", for example, is better served by long tones and understated delivery, to meet the mood of the piece he read, then it is by any show of powerful playing.

For fans of improvised music and virtuoso performance, this album is essential. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Dark, Weird & Accessible.......2004-01-12

I bought this because I saw a piece on Erik and this record in the Wire, a magazine I really trust. And though it's not the kind of thing I usually pick up, I love Maldoror. It consists of dark and atmospheric cello scraping, bowing, plucking, and pulling -- all improvised. I know, I know, it sounds like it'd be really weird and inaccessible, but there's something about Friedlander's sense of melody, his technique, and his ability to compose on the fly that makes this a record a classy little thing. It makes me think of dark moments, French films, and John Coltrane's best work. Try it. You'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BAND ROCKS!.......2007-05-27

THIS DEBUT ALBUM FROM THIS LATE 80S HAIR BAND WAS SENSATIONAL. WARRANT TOOK THE MUSIC SCENE BY STORM. SUCH HITS LIKE "DOWN BOYS", "SOMETIMES SHE CRIES",AND OF COURSE ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR SONGS OF THE DECADE "HEAVEN" WE'RE ALL OVER THE RADIO WAVES.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RECORD FOR ANY ROCK FAN.CHECK IT OUT!

2 out of 5 stars Catching the comets tail, so to speak.......2006-07-12

During the final spasms of the hair metal daze there were a range of bands that tried to milk a last big bang from the hard rock buying public. Groupls like Sweet FA and Southgang aimed high and achieved low. But Warrant were the band that succeeded, the last party before flannel replaced flair and the HR/HM genre gave up the fight against rap/dance to become the dominant musical genre outside of pop music for those under 30.

But to be perfectly blunt it is hard to see why Warrant was successful. The S/T debut waxes lyrical about the wild times and wild women yet is decaf pop metal. Big Talk rides a cool groove, Heaven is a quality lighters in the air number and that's about it. A coupla catchy bits, cool title and a clutch of embarrassing band pics sum this up. The story is that these guys ripped live and toured (and partied) hard - so perhaps it's the live experience that propelled the commercial success. Or perhaps Jani Lane really was that good looking.

This record is the recorded equivalent of a balloon, cool for a few moments if your a kid but ultimately made of air. Plenty of people had a good time to it though.

5 out of 5 stars Worth checking out .......2006-06-04

I actually have this on audio cassette (anyone remember them?) and just listened to it for the first time in a few years and while I will concede some of their songs sound dated, Warrant is still enjoyable to listen to.

For all the teased to the sky bleached blonde hair, spandex that looked painted on those rail-thin bodies, and the like, I'll take Warrant anyday over the continuous stream of slop that has been passed off as music since the mid-80's. The reason why is because Warrant, and so-called "hair bands" like them (WHO came up with that lame term??), they actually wrote their own songs. They weren't record company creations like the current crop of slop that's pushed down the public's throats every minute of every day on your local Clear Channel owned station.

The 80's were a depressing time for this country where everything was in a state of decay (I haven't fallen for all the romanticizing that's been going on of late of that horrible decade. I saw things quite differently) but one thing that I still like to this day are heavy metal bands that wrote (and sometimes produced) their own music. A lot of heavy metal from the late-80's sounds dated but it's still enjoyable and I like listening to it from time and time (and remembering my crush on lead singer Jani Lane always makes me smile. He still looks good).

Warrant created great ballads with "Sometimes She Cries" and "Heaven" that are one my favorite cuts on this album. D.R.F.S.R. is definitely worth checking out. - Donna Di Giacomo

4 out of 5 stars Classic eighties pop-metal at its best.......2005-05-17

Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich (1989.) Warrant's first album.

As everyone knows, the classic eighties metal scene was almost instantaneously destroyed with the outbreak of grunge in the early nineties. This caused many a classic metal band to collapse, or in some cases change their images. The biggest victims of this musical transition were, by far, the eighties-style metal bands that got the latest starts in the decade. Among these bands were Winger, Slaughter, Extreme, Trixter, and of course, Warrant. Warrant was an excellent pop-metal group, and unfortunately, their late start is what ultimately cost them their chance at being immortalized like many of the bands of the day were. Warrant didn't release their first album, Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich, until just two years before grunge ultimately killed most classic metal. How does the group's debut measure up? Read on for my review.

There are a lot of reasons people diss Warrant - their music is cheesy, they're unoriginal, the list goes on. It pisses me off to hear this stuff, because for one, heavy metal has never been about lyrics, but rather melodies. And as for being unoriginal? This isn't necessarily a bad thing. If the band had been a blatant rip-off of everything from this era of music, then YES, it wold be bad. But what Warrant does is takes all the best elements from the era and combines them. Because of this, they create a pop-metal sound that is widely-appealing to fans of music from this era, but at the same time, is nowhere near as chessy/glam as Poison was. What results is an excellent, very underrated band. There are plenty of fast-paced rockers here that are sure to please, as well as the obligatory power ballads you've got on practically every eighties pop metal album. Warrant's rockers and ballads are among the finest of this period, when American metal was in its identity crisis, just prior to grunge taking over. If you're a fan of eighties pop rock/metal you'll love this album. Just don't expect anything revolutionary here.

Warrant's albums got remastered and reissued. The remasters feature expanded liner notes, as well as some rare bonus tracks. It's great to see a company do remasters the right way - many labels (I'm looking at YOU, Mercury) just remaster the album and don't do anything else. If you want to see how remasters should be done, The Metal Masters Series shows you the way.

In the end, this is classic pop-metal the way it was meant to be enjoyed. If you want a pop-metal revolution, you won't get it here, but if you just want a good, solid pop metal album from one of the most underrated bands of the era, you're certainly gonna get it from Warrant's debut. Four out of five stars. Recommended, if you're into this sort of thing.

Sticking to the well-flogged anthems, the lads rumble with pro efficiency and a broad wink ("fat, 40, and back," mutters a scripted Johnny) through a near-complete set list. They run low on gas halfway through these 54 minutes, but there's no denying the nostalgic kick for fans of a certain age (whose emotions will swing between glee and revulsion). --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars One of my top favorite LIVE cds!!!.......2007-02-22

I love this cd. the Sex Pistols sound great and as a "full" band=with having the original bass player back in the band=Glen Matlock. This is the reunion tour cd (which I so wish I got to see/I missed out on seeing the pistols in the 70's and 90's and I LOVE THIS BAND!!) Some of the songs were done with some different arrangements and has Stepping Stone and Satelitte=songs that are Pistol Staples but were not on the NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS album. It's a fun punk cd=wish their was a home video that was released of this concert. 5 stars. (Other live cds I suggest: KISS ALIVE BOX SET 1975-2000, Alice Cooper=A Fistful of Alice and MINISTRY: IN CASE YOU DIDN'T FEEL LIKE SHOWING UP).

4 out of 5 stars One of the few good punk reunions of the last decade..........2006-12-12

I heard that the Pistols' performance was less than stellar on their 2003 tour, but in 1996 they were tight as a drum. They hadn't played together since January 1978 and I remember how excited we all were to know that the Last Rock and Roll Band was back on the road. Even if their live show wasn't the greatest, we reasoned, it would be a thrill just to see the Sex Pistols together again!
Well, to cut to the chase, we were all pleasantly surprised to hear how good they sounded--how lean and aggressive. No Malcolm McLaren hype or Sid Vicious junky nonsense to contend with; just the four original members of the group(John Lydon, Steve Jones, Glen Matlock, and Paul Cook) churning out classics like "Bodies", "New York", and (of course) "Anarchy in the UK" like it was 1977 again. I saw them in Memphis, Tennessee in August '96 and the setlist there was exactly the same as "Filthy Lucre"(recorded about a month earlier at London's Finsbury Park, where they encored with the Stooges' "No Fun", which was not included on the live disc, unfortunately)...so this album has a lot of nostalgic value for me. And, apart from that, the sound is just killer! All the Pistols are in fine form, and they play a couple of their obscure B-sides--"Did You No Wrong" and "Satellite"--in addition to every track from "Never Mind the Bollocks". I remember how much fun the audience was having at the show, and the band seemed to feed off that; Lydon, in particular, seemed to be enjoying himself. Everybody sang along to "Anarchy in the UK" and it was, in an odd way, an almost spiritual moment!
Ten years later, "Filthy Lucre" still brings a smile to my face. Thanks, guys, for giving those of us who were too young to catch your show the first time around another chance to see you perform live.

4 out of 5 stars Well, This Was Unexpected..........2006-11-16

Who would've thought that the Pistols would get back together for the money? There's a certain amusing irony in there. Or is it the fact that it was done because our convictions told us that they'd never do it? Well, regardless, it happened and this is the result of that.

In terms of live albums, this one exhudes ambiance. John Lydon, I mean, Rotten (it's not PiL anymore) does a good job getting through to the audience in his own particular way. The band itself, despite playing the same chords as always, sound tighter than you'd expect. The fact that the distortion exeeds that you might be expecting also shows how these aging punks won't go down without a noisy fight.

The tracklist itself is pretty solid. It takes the basic "Never Mind the Bollocks" template and appends some tracks from that era and that Monkees cover that ever punk band does. All in all, it's good.

Given the official output from this seminal outfit, this is a welcome addition to their slim line of 'official' stuff. Fans will dig it, and it will compliment the collection of anyone who isn't too keen on bootlegs. The performances might come off as automatic sometimes, but for the most part, this is a live experience that's well worth delving into.

5 out of 5 stars buy this now!.......2006-07-06

This cd rocks!!!.Best sounding Pistols live album. And a reunion one!The new versions are great
Lydons voice is still up to the task and the rythmic section
is kick @ss tight. On the downside,Id have expected a more polished recording for an album produced in mid 90s.It
lacks bass, treble and general dynamics, which I had to compensate for by means of heavy processing. In this particular case, that factor will cost the review just one star, only because the music is soooo damned good!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Thank God there is a true live album..........2006-06-14

This was a great recorded album.

The Sex Pistols started it all (on the UK scene), but here in the US was the Ramones who inspired the Pistols...

Green Day, Offspring, corporate "punk" music... Need to go away and call themselves Pop Rock.....

I'll be honest, I never liked Warrant and still don't and
don't think they were very good but after the garbage I see
on MTV and hear on the radio I realize that this was much
better than what is out there. So if you like it, enjoy it!

4 out of 5 stars When music was fun.......2005-07-26

Now it just seems music is popular based on depressing and violent lyrics. It used to be that music was genuine entertainment, was fun and made people happy. Now it just has to bring up the things we would rather forget. Groups like Warrant helped us to forget those things for awhile. Rock on and add this one to your collection for funner times and while you're at it pick up Cherry pie!

2 out of 5 stars Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinkin' Stinkin'. Not Classic by ANY Means........2005-07-20

Yes, at one time I was into this band. Yes, I am now ashamed and know they were nothing but clowns in leather suits who changed their feature music flavor more often than Baskin Robbins changed the flavor of the week. In Warrant's case, that would be considered the flavor of the weak.

What did I and my buddies ever see in this group, I wonder now. I heard "Heaven" last week on a station called The Brew, and recalled how we all went gaga over this phony spandex laden, eyeliner, hairspray bent crap. Truth is, the guys in Warrant were so untalented and so ugly without their getups, they wouldn't have made little girls scream and cream without all that junk they did to themselves.

For two years before they got a contract with Columbia, I kept hearing how great this band was and couldn't wait to get this album. It promised to rock. When I got it home, the rockers were trite Boston and alleged "southern rock" ripoffs, and most of it was whiny Jani Lane's tribute to his skanky ex-girlfriend Becca Bramlett (Yes, skanky Bonnie's daughter). The vocals were bad and, outside of some badly choreographed video moves and a few half-baked power chords, this album was nothing special. Most tolerable tracks? Ummm...I can't remember anymore, but when "Heaven" is the only song anyone can remember you for, you know you suck as a "metal" band. I certainly can pick out the worst songs. The opener, "32 Pennies (In a Ragu Jar)" is just so unspeakably awful on every level, you need a bomb shelter to protect you from its fallout. "So Damn Pretty (Should Be Against the Law)" should be retitled So Damn Awful Should Be Executed for Public Harrassment. Truly, the best song on here is the cocky, self-assured strut of "Big Talk" but it doesn't ...uh...warrant buying this bad debut or any of its followups, which I collected until that awful grunge album they put out in the mid-90s.

You know? It's funny that I always remember Jani Lane and his silly white hair, always posing with those baggy Olsen Twin blue eyes of his, hands together as if he was praying. I guess he was praying for a better singing voice. See? God DOESN'T always answer every prayer!

5 out of 5 stars An impressive first debut.......2005-01-02

Today, in 2005, rock music is #3 on the list of most popular music, right after rap and country. New rock music is still being released today, and while old rock bands such as KISS, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Metallica, and several other old rock bands are still popular, there are also the rock bands who were popular for a while, but to this day, are not forgotten, but aren't popular either. Unfortunately, one of those bands happens to be Warrant, who were a late 80's glam rock band that became known as another glam rock band with some raunchy material. While their debut album, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich" is not as good as their sophomore album "Cherry Pie", it is still a very good album. The songs on here are very well written, and the production is richly executed, while the album kind of makes you wish we were still living in the 1980's. With ballads such as "32 Pennies", "Sometimes She Cries", and "Heaven", and other hard rock songs which include "D.R.F.S.R.", "Ridin' High", "Cold Sweat", among others, this album proves to be your 80's glam rock album. If you liked "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich", then I would recommend getting "The Best Of Warrant" and the reissued versions of both this album and "Cherry Pie"- even if you already have the originals. "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich" is a very good album, and if you are a fan of 80's music, then you should add this album to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great first album by Warrant! .......2004-10-06

I think that Warrant made a very good debut with this album. It was so over the top in its sound. Although I listen to R&B, rap and urban stuff, this was one of the more unique heavy metal albums that I got to listen to. Heaven and Sometimes She Cries were the power ballads that were hits, but I love the rockers in Down Boys, D.R.F.S.R., 32 Pennies, In The Sticks and the last two. There's a lot of energy and the guitars are revved up on this effort. Jani Lane sings with attitude on here, and the lead guitars in Erik Turner along with bassist Jerry Dixon and the other members provide the backbone for the band. Although Cherry Pie and later albums did well, they are no contest to this debut. It's good to hear that the remaining members still perform today and still wowing audiences!
