hate mix tapes but I'm a big fan of wc and has been since his low profile dsays in 89 I bought this just to hear his crazy flow and yes dub comes hard hitting letting you know he's still the killer and the guy these girls don't wanna bring around your parents I love how he rapped over nas' track grimy making it even grimier and the trick daddy beat man dub took that track and made it insane. can't wait for his new album guilty by association check out crazty toons mix tape dub does 6 songs on there.

5 out of 5 stars Let the beats play.......2005-02-16

I was a little disappointed when I first got this cd because the songs are 1.5-3 minutes long and they were so good that I wanted them to be complete songs. Make sure to listen to this cd straight through because it is in mix-tape format. Once I did that, this album is unreal and the beats are amazing. Just put it on and let it play. There are a ton of remixes and WC can make any song sound good. Highly recommended if you like WC and West Coast Rap.

Perennial house DJ and Mushroom Jazz-man Mark Farina has been there and done it all in his long career, so it's no surprise that Connect shows off a master's dexterity with sounds, beats, and the importance of a well-timed sample. The record lands headfirst with Latin Impressions' "Boca De Bon Do Neon," which showcases the accordion, surely a house first. Hypnotic tracks flow forth effortlessly, and while the beats remain largely static, Farina's diverse sonic embellishments--garbled voices, pitched-down kazoos, smoking saxophones, and a regal command to "get on down and par-tay!"--keep the disc fresh. Throughout, Connect never loses it organic, mellow jazz mood, burning slow before your Saturday night really kicks in. --Ken Micallef

Album Description

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars must have........2007-01-15

For anyone who is a big Mark Farina fan, this cd is a must have. This is one of my favorite house mixes ever.

5 out of 5 stars Not as good as San Francisco Sessions 1 but..........2006-04-29

...a great work by Farina. A little more "tek/house" than SFS1 but with the same deepness...
Excellent track selection. Latin tracks to begin, then deep catchy tracks by Swirl People, Joshua (work it out is simple but so efficient!) or Avondale Music Society (pretty good track from an underground man). Then, place to a little more "techy" sound with brett johnson and andrew macari (BEWARE!!! for the single vinyls afficionados, there is a mistake in the tracklist. Indeed, track 9 = Andrew Macari, and track 10 = Halo,Penn & Chus), and the mix finishes with a smooth track by Sirus.

Every deep house fan (deep house without Diva vocals) should buy it. It's an essential mix, with, as habitually, a strong atmosphere created by the magic man: Mark Farina.

3 out of 5 stars NOT HIS BEST WORK..........2005-06-02

If you're into "deep" house, this disc won't really get your groove on until track 10 - the first 9 tracks are throwaways. He's done better with his "San Francisco Sessions" mix.

2 out of 5 stars Danceable CD but the pace gets to be too much.......2004-03-28

This cd is very good but after dancing to it for a few tracks, I got tired of the same endless beat for every song. 'Connect' got unconnected after playing it a few times. It seems more like a workout cd than a dance cd. I like more varied beats and creativity when I listen to dance music. This record is just one formula...a canned beat with different instrumentals. Marques Wyatt's 'For Those Who Like to Get Down' is much better. Great for a non-stop dance marathon.

5 out of 5 stars Just Plain iLL.......2003-10-11

Connect is an extrememly impressive offering from in my humble opinion one of the dopest, most versatile house djs on the planet. Seamless is probably the best way to describe this album as it flows extraordinarly well from start to finish. Listening to it is like a journey. Mark takes you through tech, tribal, latin and jazzy house without any of the track seeming as if they are out of place. Its like getting a full, 7 course meal in a fine resturant, with each dish savored, and taken out of your way to make room for the next equally delicious one. Not entirely comprised of 'dance tracks', this cd is great to put on in your ride or in the crib when you just want to chill. If you are a househead, you simply have to cop this joint.

3 out of 5 stars An "Orphic egg" laid.......2005-12-17

Back in the '70s Decca put out a budget US label called "Orphic Egg." My title utilizes this as a pun for what Orpheus did with Ives's Set No. 1.

The person who advised Orpheus on this music did a really poor job. Never mind the HOWLER in the top Violin in an early-on measure in "The St. Gaudens" (A-sharp instead of A-natural -- WHOA!). I'm here to write about this version of Set No. 1: The See'r, A Lecture, The Ruined River, Like a Sick Eagle, Calcium Light Night, and Incantation.

First off I'll point out the most obvious blooper. The Solo horn part in Incantation is played in the wrong key! It is supposed to start on E-flat, but sounds a 5th lower on A-flat. The reason this happened is that the person who advised them didn't notice that in the score it says "actual sounds" above the Solo staff, but this note was omitted from the part (publisher's error). So the English Horn plays it as if it is a transposing part, and thus it sounds a 5th lower than it should be! All that needed to be done was to check the version for voice and piano -- but their advisor didn't bother to do that.

The versions of The See'r and Like a Sick Eagle are the ones made by Gunther Schuller for his Columbia LP. They're "all right" but Schuller based his scores solely on the old 1934 copyist scores that perpetuate significant if minor errors. This version of A Lecture is the one made by Gregg Smith for his second Columbia LP which also has minor errors and changes the Solo cornet to clarinet.

Now comes the true joke of the album (a sad joke poorly played on Orpheus): these versions of The Ruined River and Calcium Light Night are not just in critical error, at times they are just plain crazy! The score used for CLN is almost funny for me to listen to --- wrong rhythms, sometimes bizzare rhythms, especially in the solo cornet part, and a few completely incorrect parts for the instruments. Reading an Ives sketch can be deceiving, and one shouldn't always rely on alignment of one part against another, or hastily-sketched fragments of parts duplicated by a later addition, but this is what was done when this score was made by the group's advisor. It doesn't even sound, to my ears, like a march anymore, and this piece is supposed to represent the members of Psi Upsilon and Delta Kappa Epsilon marching across the Old Yale Campus initiating new members and singing uproariously. They could have used Ken Singleton's score, which is a good score and appears on Jim Sinclair's Koch CD, but I hear it's unavailable. They might have even used the now-discredited Henry Cowell "arrangement" and done better, but they didn't!

Now I say all this because I have some inside information. I was commissioned to do a critical Ives Society edition of this Set in the 1980s, and Ensemble Modern used that edition in their now (unfortunately) out-of-print EMI CD. One day I was called up by the person advising Orpheus and asked if I would send them my edition, in score and parts, because this person thought it would be "wonderful" to have these pieces fill out the CD (in other words, I was sweet-talked into providing these materials). I did so, at my own expense and without asking for any remuneration. I checked with Orpheus a few days later and they had received my materials. Within a few minutes I was called back by the person who had asked for the materials and was seriously cussed out for daring to call Orpheus on my own. I was a little stunned. I was even more stunned when this CD came out with this travesty of an edition on it! (I also had a good laugh over how truly awful it was!)

I wrote Orpheus telling them how they had been taken in (my first use of the "Orphic egg" metaphor) but they didn't seem to care. It's their misfortune that they put their trust in someone who didn't merit it.

The CD has a wonderful rendition of Symphony No. 3 and the Theater Orchestra Set, and the other two movements of "Three Places." But don't buy it for Set No. 1! You can do better with Richard Bernas's "When the Moon" CD (even though he was made to use Cowell's score fof Calcium Light Night).

Got their CD by friend's recommendation.
What a nice surprise! I am not a music buff like previous reviewers below, but I can tell when I hear a good music.
    And Lismore is the one.
I am glad that we don't have to dig Euro music to find a cool band like Lismore.
It is a breath of fresh air in this world full of mass produced "fast-food" music. I love listening to them while I drive. Track 7 is awesome.
    Must have!

3 out of 5 stars We could almost connect.......2005-06-24

Lismore has an odd lineup, with a former DJ, jazz vocalist and the Ween bassist all doing duty in it. Surprisingly, the result sounds like... none of the above, really. Instead, it's a dreamy, melodious mix of glitch-pop, rock'n'roll and a shoegazer pop.

It opens with the tripped-out synth and guitar of "Tremolo," before skipping to uncomfortable synth-rock, and a tremulous slow-moving ballad that showcases Penelope Trappes' pretty vocals. That pretty much sums up the album, with its strengths lying in the synthier, trippier numbers rather than the uneven rocker "Pour Un Ancien Ami."

What follows is a mix of synthy shoegazer and rock -- Lismore dabbles in just about every kind of musical combination they can think of, not to mention every musical style they can pull off. Like the drums-and-synth "Angelize," the techno "Tonight," the murky pop of "Come Undone," or the jazzy flavour of "Finest Hour."

Lismore does quite a bit of dabbling in different styles, and most of their songs are pretty much successful in straddling the electronic/rock fence. And they do a good job of blending the grittier drums and bass with swirling guitar and synth. Not everyone can do that successfully, or even semi-successfully.

Yet somehow their sound is a bit too ambient to actually take off -- if they kept some constant beats or tunes, their sound would be absolutely mind-blowing. As it is, it's pleasantly melodious, with some definite stumbling blocks when they get too gritty and rock-y.

Trappes has a pretty voice, insofar as I can tell -- her vocals tend to blend into the woodwork, making it hard to hear her. The exception is "Cut," where she shows off a dramatic, dreamy vocal style over those swirling guitars. Stephen Hindman (also known as "DJ Kingsize") also does an outstanding job with the synths and programming, adding a weird trippy sound to otherwise ordinary beats.

Lismore's "We Could Connect Or We Could Not" is an eclectic, electric little melting pot, though it's too mellow and ambient to really take off. Still, it's a pleasant listen on a rainy summer day.

    4 out of 5 stars Moody...Dream-like...........2005-04-20

This is a beautiful CD...Not one for just any mood mind you..But when you happen to stumble into one of those rainy-day trances, this is the perfect soundtrack. Perfect for popping in late at night or as background music that will sure to have your company saying "wow who is this?" my advice? If you think that you would like dreamy female vocals over ethereal, moody electronics...Just get it..And save it for a rainy day.

      Album Description

Dreaming is music to connect you to your dreams, yearnings, and deep longings. A collection of classical songs, the harp and violin duet tones on Dreaming are somber, yet heart-warming. The depth and richness of the music helps people feel their grief (of not having their dream fulfilled) and gives them hope that their deep longings can come true.
