On his second "solo" album, this stand-up comic and character actor proves himself to be not just a foul-mouthed everyman and an unrepentant geek, but a rather awesome wordsmith as well. That a comedian might rant about how "Cirque du Soleil is like catnip for old people" or the ridiculous unhealthiness of a popular item at the fast food chain KFC is not surprising. That he'd call the fast food item "a failure pile in a sadness bowl" is, let's face it, pure poetry (and really, actually funny the way he tells it). On the track "I Tell a Story About Birth Control and Deal with a Retarded Heckler," Patton displays some of the finest manipulation of a disturbing audience member you'll ever hear. Patton has been a stand-up comedian for almost twenty years and this is his second CD. Lazy...or maybe busy. He's appeared in over twenty movies, including "Magnolia", "Reno 911!: Miami", and the documentary "The Comedians Of Comedy", which he also created and produced. He played Spence on "The King Of Queens" for nine seasons, is a regular on "Reno 911!", a frequent guest on Conan and Jimmy Kimmel, and a recurring voice actor on "Kim Possible", "SpongeBob SquarePants", "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", and "Crank Yankers". He's a regular columnist in the NY Times Magazine and was an uncredited writer on the "Borat" movie. He's also the lead voice in this summer's Pixar movie, "Ratatouille", playing a rat named Remy. This is his first CD on Sub Pop and it includes a DVD with one hour of stand-up.

If you're a fan of Patton, this material is just as strong and cutting as "feelin' kinda patton." What's great about this release is that there is also a DVD that has a set from Atlanta's 40-watt along with some other footage of Patton just riffing on different topics.

His takes on different political and social issues is fresh and witty. He's brutally honest and insightful and he's evolved into one of the premier stand-up acts working today. There's always a sense of humanity in his act and that's what makes Patton's appeal so broad. He might be saying something that is mostly cynical but it's always tempered with his kind disposition and witty outlook on life. Beyond all of that, he's an incredible comedy writer and his material on this release is masterfully constructed and his delivery is just as sharp.

I am a Patton fan and I was expecting to be amused. However, I got more laugh-out-loud moments from this CD than I have from any recent comedy CD. There isn't a bad routine. For me, the gems are "Death Bed" and "Physics for Poets". However, I can say I honestly laughed with every track.

I like the inclusion of the DVD as it allows you to watch the genesis of the material. Patton is a distinct physical presence and that adds to the humor.

My husband rarely finds any stand-up comedy funny. However, as I was playing the CD I saw tears of laughter streaming down his face durng "Physics for Poets". It's that good.

Brilliant. That's all I can say. I don't want to even talk about the content because I would not want to spoil a single moment if you haven't heard it yet. It's great. If you love Patton's work, you will love the cd/dvd. Buy this instead of wasting your time watching "Last Comic Standing".

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Change may be normal in the music business but when a critical part of a machine is removed so early in the game could the replacement be equal or greater? Jethro Tull's debut and intense album "This Was" highlighted the blues guitar offerings from Mick Abrahams. As the band would consider more and more adapting a style closer to English Folk, Abrahams and group parted ways. Enter one Martin Barre.

The same way the Rolling Stones struck gold with Mick Taylor taking over for Brian Jones, Jethro Tull did likewise. In no way is this slighting Abrahams ability. Barre's forte was the ability to diversify and succeed in any musical genre.

Tull opened the second album with the bluesy-based "A New Day Yesterday." Instantly the listener is fixated to the songs construction. Throughout the compositions Anderson's vocals and Barre's tasty playing (as well as the perfect tone for each tune) mesh as one. To solidify the musical side of things Glen Cornick's bass and Clive Bunker's drums are locked together. As you have digested the recording, in the past Barre's skill may have been more prevalent to the ear because his guitar is such an integral part of the sound (He has played with Ian Anderson since 1969) but don't overlook the fine performance Bunker gave.

"Bourée" has become one of the most highly praised instrumentals ever. Almost 40 years later it still is receiving airplay.

"Back To The Family" blends folk and rock. The vocal inflection is perfect. You feel as Ian Anderson is singing for one and not the masses.

"Nothing Is Easy" is another song still being played on the radio. The riff deserves its legendary stature. Barre plays the song with such ease intensity yet ease, it wouldn't feel right coming out of another guitarists hands.

"Fat Man" further explores their folk side with some esoteric sounds to boot.

Time has not diminished the album, only catapulted it standing. With the addition of four bones tracks, it is now easy to go living in the past.

I listened to this for the first time in many years upon recent purchase, and my feeling is the same as it was 20 years ago in my youth when I memorized the album note-for-note. It's a great collection of songs. Ian and the band move from heavy rock to exotic chamber music to ballad and back and forth, and all 10 songs are not just fine, but extremely well-crafted and memorable. Which makes this a pretty great album.

OK, to get the real deal package-wise I think you have to seek out the Japanese digipack with the pop-up of the band in the middle. But if you aren't into childrens-art-book styling like me, and just want the music, get this in any form. "This Was", their first effort, broke us into what they were all about, so then we were really ready for this when it came out. The bonus tracks fit fine thematically and don't mess up what was a nice cohesive LP in the first place. Never have been able to get "Fat Man" out of my head, maybe because it hits close to home.

The only bad news about this album is that Tull never again came close to this phenomenal album. Technically, this is J.T.'s second album but the first album had a drastically different lineup. "Stand Up" is a beautiful collection of fantastic songs and amazing guitar work. The band managed to produce 2 more great albums before they began to descend into parody. Surprisingly, for the late 60s, most of the band were tea-totallers and it shows. The musicianship is very tight, blending jazz, folk, middle eastern and folk influences into a heady brew that appears effortless. If you think this band is a bunch of boring old hippies, buy this CD and listen more closely. You may be missing some amazing music.

The three-minute plus instrumental piece is a melodic journey through a universe of rhythmic diversity which characterizes the band's gigantism amidst the Barons of Progressive Rock.

Released in 1969, the album "STAND UP" - the band's second studio achievement - hosts a vast repertoire of multifaceted compositions which are fusions themselves of various musical elements pertaining to styles as diverse as: classical, folk, celtic, hard rock and jazz. Decades later, these songs would become atemporal Jethro Tull Classics. Among this all-star line-up is their version of the erudit "BOURÉE", which stands-out until the present day as one of the most precious gemstones in the annals of progressive rock.


This particular rendition of Johan Sebastian Bach's classic piece is simply astonishing. The song starts off in a sublime manner, with Ian Anderson's magical flute luring the listener along with its angelical melody which in deed seems lighter than air. Such ethereality is only interrupted as the piece's time signature switches to a funky rhythmic break-down beat. From this point on, the song about faces in structure, shifting from a classical arrangement to a groovy/psychadelic motif in which all band members jam intensely and in a complementary manner.


To guarantee this effect, a superb rhythmic work is handled by both bass player Glenn Cornick and drummer Clive Bunker as they set a sturdily structured jamming framework which serves as a precious safeguard for Ian Anderson's and Martin Barre's whimsical solos.


Moreover, Ian Anderson's role as a "maestro" in charge of his experimental quartet is a solid statement that proved to the entire musical community that his traits as a musician were far too superior for the time. As of that moment, his distinguished position as band leader, composer and musical virtuoso would become unanimously widespread and also immortalized in the timeless chords of his "BOURÉE".

Here Mr. Black takes on the government after 9/11 plus other topics with intellegence and wonderful spot on observations. He is also very funny. This is my favorite album of his so far.

I liked this cd a lot. The End Of The Universe skit is hilarious. My only gripe, and don't call me a pu**y for saying this, is that he swears too much. I have no problem with swearing, it's just he uses it so much sometimes, it gets annoying. Instead of being part of his act, the whole angry thing becomes his act. At times, it's just annoying. He could easily get across the same jokes without yelling and saying fu*k every two words. Some of this jokes are hilarious while some really aren't that funny. They're observations that we all make, he just yells them.

While all of Lewis Black's comedy albums are very good, his second release, The End of the Universe, remains his best release to date. Released months after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01, Black's delivery is passionate and intelligent throughout the album. Whether he's ranting on the over the top spectacle that has become the Super Bowl, the U.S. government's lack of common sense, or the ridiculousness of airport security, Black's observations are both humorous and accurate. Also worth noting is that unlike his more recent albums like the Carnegie Hall Performance, the album never becomes long winded or too political. Other tracks that deal with Jerry Falwell's controversial statements about 9/11 and global warming are also very funny and dead on. An excellent album from one of the best comedians working today, The End of the Universe shows Lewis Black at the height of his powers. Highly recommended.

Don't let the headless CGI dancer on the cover fool you. While Stand Up has a more organic feel than 2001's radio-ready Everyday, it is hardly an invocation for carefree days spent twirling on the grass. I seem to have lost my copy of this record, and I'm not really mourning it--not nearly as much as "Busted Stuff." Yeah, DMB tried to write songs with the same types of melody and freeform as their early work, but this feels forced. And I remember exactly one musical phrase from the whole album, whereas I could sing you the entirety of "Under the Table and Dreaming" if you asked me to. Don't bother with this one, it's a dud.

I'm not a hard-core DMB fan, but I buy and enjoy most of his stuff. This album, however, is simply boring and unmemorable. There's nothing that comes close to showing the true musical talents that I know DMB has. I got through the first 8 songs and couldn't remember anything about what I had just listened to. I'll shelve it for a couple months and then listen to it again and may change my mind later, but I'm not very optomistic that it will make a difference.

Three stars is too few for a band that has successfully mined the soul out of their music for the first time since "What You Are" on the stilted Everyday.

If Everyday was DMB re-inventing themselves, Stand Up presents them as a band that cannot go home and refuses to. Stand Up should convince even the most casual fan (e.g. myself, I just heard it for the first time last week!) that there was enough passion stirring in the heart of this band to push them deep inside themselves - the end result is some of the bravest and boldest songs composed yet by this band. The songs also come across as more relaxed, even as they dig in and step up the beat.

Buy this album, if for no other reason than to remind yourself that DMB earned their spot and deserve to keep it. The naysayers that wag their tongues about the frivolousness of the lyrics forget that the sheer hedonistic joy of the music was what made DMB famous in the first place. People come to a DMB show to be loved because they know they are. This is DMB's "Darkness on the Edge of Town," and should be drawing their listeners back for a long time.

Not far from participating in the Vote for Change Tour during the 2004 presidential champain, 2005's Stand Up is filled with a lot of political statements when you listen to the lyrical content in two of the album's best songs with "Everybody Wake Up," and "You Might Die Trying," and they still show the deep thought the band has always had. "American Baby," is another exceptional piece and filters feelings on political and emotional levels. Musically, the production is tight, and while the songs don't carry the instrumental pauses or extended jams as often, they also don't lack the energy. Tinsley's violin may sound a little more discreet, but not lacking as he takes control in the final moments of "You Might Die Trying," and plays a fabulous finishing take on "Louisiana Bayou,"(and Tinsley plus the band jam long and hard when they perform these tracks live). The band experiment with some musical edges with soft R&B on "Stolen Away on 55th & 3rd," and the Southern Country feel on "Louisiana Bayou," but there are a few flaws here and there. "Smooth Rider," would be the dud on this release and not one I would consider as the band's shining moment. "Hello Again" doesn't work well either. But overall, the Dave Matthews Band haven't lost their musical cool and conclude with two more great tracks in "Steady As We Go," and "Hunger For the Great Light," containing the spiritual honesty and raw emotion the band is so well-known for.

Back in the '90s,the Dave Matthews Band was considered the next Grateful Dead,with Dave Matthews as its clean-shaven Jerry Garcia.In my college days,the DMB was praised for blending world music,jazz&rock.It was The Next Big Thing.There were Daveheads.But then came "Everyday" produced by Glen Ballard (who also produced Alanis Morrissette's music),which was seen as a sell-out.

"Stand up" was the last gasp.When this album was released,a local Bay Area radio station was mocking the DMB as "annoying"&saying that having the ubiquitous Black Eyed Peas (who are now collaborating with Sergio Mendes&Michael Jackson)open for them made the DMB "doubly annoying."

This album has a few highlights-
1)American Baby,intro&song-Despite the use of the African kora (harp),this song sounds Asian with its pentatonic scale.It's quite electrifying.It's danceable&shows the brilliance the DMB once had.It's powerful in the use of acoustic instrumental music,like REM's "Losing my religion."
2)Louisiana Bayou-Very jazzy,you could say it evokes the New Orleans sound.Again,the DMB plays to its strengths.
3)Finest Hour-This song is catchy despite Dave Matthews' politics.Great as a song,not great as a protest song.
4)Out of my hands-Reflective with the use of piano,like REM's "Nightswimming."

Can the DMB make a comeback?It's hard to tell.In a decade,they've managed to go from being the Next Big Thing to Has Beens."Stand up" made the mistake of being produced by an R&B/hip-hop producer who tried to make the DMB sound like any other group.DMB isn't 50 Cent;it isn't Justin Timberlake.Whether the DMB returns to form remains to be seen.

Having played a number of times under Karl King, I had great expectations for this CD. Alas, it was not to be. The music is there, the musicians play all the right notes and the conductor keeps time. The recording is only mediocre, of Laserlight quality, and the performance is not what I expected from what they call a "Circus Band." Indeed, the liner notes state that the band is mostly students and professionals from the Philadelphia area. In other words, a "pick up" band. And the conductor seems to have no circus experience only small town symphony experience (from the puffery in the liner notes). From listening, it would appear that he has never even heard a real circus band. Both conductor and band would not last a day at a real circus. I do have a suspicion, however, that the musicians would do better under a better conductor.

Now, if they called themselves a concert band, that would be accurate and fair, and would not have dashed my hopes, as they are OK as a concert band. But just OK.

Of course, a concert band can indeed generate all the excitement of a bona fide circus band, as Frederick Fennell so aptly demonstrated on his Mercury recordings.

Now, if you want real circus music played by a real circus band, get a Merle Evans recording.

However, having said all that, I will keep the album, as I have always been a Karl King fan, and it is fine music decently played by an OK concert band.

It was indeed exciting to find so many of Karl King's marches on one disc. The band's playing, however leaves a lot to be desired, as does the sound quality of the disc. The balance is poor, with a very annoying tenor sax playing loud and out-of-tune on every cut. Buy this if you are a march collector (which I am), but I do not recommend it for its entertainment value. Get the "Screamers" disc by Fennell and Eastman for a far superior set of circus marches with great playing and sound.

Certainly the best thing about this CD is that there are many of Karl King's marches that have probably never been recorded previously, which is curious, since some of them rank with his best. The curious thing about this CD, on the other hand, is that it is supposedly a circus album, but only a few marches were actually written for the "big top". This band is not the best I have heard - recommend listening with headphones, to get a much clearer, less muddled sound. King was only kind of a contemporary of Sousa, having lived 35-40 years later. He actually published more marches than Sousa, and generally wrote in a style that was "softer" than the March King. Sousa wrote mostly military-style marches (better than anyone else ever has, of course), whereas King wrote many military as well as circus marches, and marches in a simpler style, suitable for school bands.

This recording of music by Karl King is absolutely splendid -it contains 28 tracks most of which I have certainly not heard before - I particularly liked the tempos of the marches - not too quick but just right - the band is good (although I had never heard of them) - I came across this recording by chance and I'm glad I did - highly recommended

Don't let the headless CGI dancer on the cover fool you. While Stand Up has a more organic feel than 2001's radio-ready Everyday, it is hardly an invocation for carefree days spent twirling on the grass. Instead it is a call to arms that carries over much of the insurrectionary spirit the Dave Matthews Band brought to 2004's Vote For Change Tour. In reference to the DRM concerns, I've had no problems playing this awesome CD on my computer or iPod. I'm not the newest nor the oldest fan; I've followed them for about 10 years but this album has quickly emerged as my favorite. The guest artists are amazing; I think it's DMB at their best. I can't recommend it highly enough!

American Baby got me hooked enough to seek out this CD and buy it. Listening to the CD once, I realized that I had heard another song on the CD before (Old Dirty Hill) but didn't recognize it as DMB. However, I loved the song.
Although the whole CD isn't a traditional DMB CD, I think it's a great branch out on their sound. I have played this album over and over again and every time I love it more and more. DMB should really be proud of this album, and it has made me appreciate this band as a group of comprehensive artists.
I haven't had an issue with their content protection and its compatibility with my computer.

I keep picking up Dave Matthews hoping somehow I would hear something like the albums "Crash" or "Under the Table and Dreaming" because those are some of the best all time albums in my opinion. DMB used to jam like no other and I could listen to them all day. "Before These Crowded Streets" came out with a couple of good songs, but really just marked the beginning of a downhill slide. "Stand Up" "Recently" and "Some Devil" are junk too. I have thrown away enough money, so I am done with DMB.

I love this album. It has taken a while to grow on me but all DMB albums are like that for me. I like this album because it is light hearted and cheeky :) I dont like the song Stand Up, i normally skip it, and i cant fathom why they named the album after it, but apart from that i think it is an easy album to listen to. It is lacking the music that makes DMB, DMB but once you get used to that it is a great album.

Hey I'm with the other reviewers in feeling some songs should have been included here rather than others(i.e.Mystery,Rock n'Roll Children) but overall it is a pretty great disc. You get "man on the Silver Mountain","Heaven and Hell" and a good collection from "Holy Diver" on two CDs. Short of buying the upcoming boxed set where else can you get this overview from a great career. I think with most anthologies people tend to focus on what is missing rather than what is included. This set smokes from the begining to the end(even though I am not much of an ELF fan). I highly recommend this album to anyone who is interested in sampling one the great heavy metal masters. I know you will want to buy the complete albums from DIO.

All smoke, No mirrors!

While not without flaw, Shand Up and Shout is chock full of metal goodness. Let's be serious for a moment: Any compilation that contains classics from Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and Dio is going to be awesome even before you pick the tracks. Add some old classic Elf, and you have a well rounded glimpse into Ronnie James' career as a metal icon.

Elf were never my favourite band, my friends always likened them to "The Guess Who with Dio singing", and you can hear that in the boogie-woogie piano. Rhino did pick some of the best Elf tunes, including Carolina County Ball, my favourite.

To be a complete set, at this point Rhino should have stuck in the two songs Dio did with Roger Glover: Love Is All and Sitting In A Dream. After Elf, but before Rainbow, Dio had participated in Roger Glover's (ex-Deep Purple) first solo album along with a plethora of guests. The two best songs, undeniably, were sung by Dio. They really should have been on here, especially since Dio reprised them both on a recent tour with Deep Purple.

And then...and then...Rainbow rises. Ritchie Blackmore (also ex-Deep Purple...see a pattern forming here?) loved Elf when they opened for DP, and stole the entire band (sans guitarist) to form the first version of Rainbow.

Now, of course, you could argue for an entire CD's worth of Rainbow tracks to represent Dio. Three are picked, one from each Rainbow album that Dio participated in. Stargazer is absent, which to me makes no sense. I also would have loved to hear Kill The King and Rainbow Eyes, but we could be here all day discussing this.

How Black was his Sabbath? Very black indeed, you can get none-more-black. Three albums here are represented by eight tracks, and here the selection is pretty undeniable. Again, you could make convincing arguments against songs like Turn Up The Night and in favor of I, but the good news is there is a Black Sabbath/Dio boxed set coming that will cover all these great songs.

Dio made a solo album, and left Sabbath (in that order) only to be replaced first by Ian Gillan (ex-Deep Purple) and Glenn Hughes (errr...ex-Deep Purple). Dio's solo career speaks for itself.

Ronnie's Dio albums get over an entire CD, but it's not nearly enough space. As another reviewer pointed out, where is Mystery? Dio's most pop moment should have been here, the video and single were what introduced many of us to Dio in the first place. I would also like to have replaced the overly long Lock Up The Wolves with something else from that same-titled album. You could replace that one song (which has been on other compilations before) with two other Dio classics. Give me Wild One and Mystery instead. Better still, they should have included the rare Time To Burn from the Intermission EP. Time To Burn was Ronnie's first collaboration with guitarist Craig Goldy, and stands up and still one of the best things they have done.

Rhino may not have had the rights, but a few Dio albums are missing completely. Speaking personally, I don't miss any songs from Angry Machines or Killing The Dragon. Something about those albums (and the recent Master Of The Moon as well) just don't do it for me, so excluding them is fine. The underrated Strange Highways does get a look-in via the title track, but I would have picked Jesus, Mary & The Holy Ghost instead. I vastly prefer Dio's fast stuff to his slow ones, if you haven't noticed.

Most criminally, Magica is completely ignored. Fever Dreams, Lord Of The Last Days, Feed My Head, As Long As It's Not About Love, any of those tracks deserve to be on any Dio anthology. Why are they not? Ask Rhino, I guess.

Another track that should have been here: Stars, by Hear N' Aid. Campbell & Bain (ex-Dio) wrote it with Ronnie, performed it with Ronnie, and a slew of every big metal name circa 1985. Halford...Tate...Lynch...Dokken...Malmsteen...Neil...Nugent, they were all there. The Hear N' Aid album is impossible to find. That one song, such an important part of Dio's history, would have been very welcome on this collection.

Complaints aside, this is an awesome collection. Pics, packaging, liner notes (by RJD), history, it's all here. Total value for the money. Unfortunately if you used this collection as a guide for expanding your Dio collection, you'd miss a lot of classics. Yet, it's a start. It's a start.

If you're a hardcore Dio fan, then you have all of this material. However, if you don't, it's a worthy pickup, as it covers from Dio's pre solo days in Elf, Rainbow, & Black Sabbath, as well as his Dio material (although it doesn't cover the last 3 studio albums, as they were on a different record label). Still, it's a nice cross section of Dio's career (his first album came out in 1958!) and while this doesn't go back that far, it's something worthy to have if you don't already have all of his albums.

Great liner notes, too, as Ronnie has a paragraph or so to say about every track on here. He even says that one of my personal favorite Sabbath songs isn't one of his favorites (damn ).

Would be nice to see one of these things that cover his pre-Elf material (Ronnie & The Redcaps, Ronnie & The Rumblers, The Electric Elves, etc). But as it stands this is a great package that covers the majority of his career.

I was impressed when i first got this 2-disc set. When i looked at track listing, i was very glad that they included some songs from his ELF albums. ELF isn't really heavy metal at all, it's just bluesy-boogie style rock, and tends to get overlooked in favor of his later work w/ Rainbow and Black Sabbath. Disc 1 is actually my favorite of the 2, it covers ELF, Rainbow and Black Sabbath all on one convient little disc and shows Ronnies progression thru all of his differant musical careers.

Disc-2 is essentially "The Very Beast of" with a couple songs added on (but what happened to "Mystery"?), nothing new or special at all. The liner notes are very well written and the packaging is beautifully illustrated. You learn lot about how some of these very famous songs were written or where the idea came for them as told by Ronnie James Dio himself. This whole release was a very well thought out idea.

I wish they had included "Stargazer", the definative song he wrote w/ Rainbow, how could they skip this? Disc-1 has too many tracks devoted too Sabbath and not enough for Rainbow, i could of done with out the "Dehumanizer" song and the live version of "Voodoo", they could of replaced them with songs like "Kill the King" and "16th Century Greensleeves".

Oh yeah, WHY isn't "Stars" on this thing? that single is a important landmark in Dio's career, this is supposed to cover the mans WHOLE recording career, right? Well, i guess you can only fit so much on these anyway (80 minutes per disc), but overall it is a solid 4 star collection of Dio tunes.

3 out of 5 stars Where in the world is MYSTERY?.......2005-03-17

I recently obtained this double disc since is the only one available that offers a complete representation of Ronnie James Dio excellent carrer. Most of his memorable stuff are included with cuts form ELF, Black Sabath, Rainbow and his solo carrer. High prompts for that.

However, this disc is lacking some major songs that should have been included in order to make it a more fulfilled expirience. An anthology is supposed to include the best selections of songs from an artists carrer. This disc includes some weak songs while leaving out major cuts like Lady of the lake and specially MYSTERY which is no doubt the song that gave DIO the most radio airplay in his entire career.

All in all, the buy is a good one for those who are major fans and would like to have a varied compilation of DIO entire solo and band carrer. I still hope that a better double disc GREATEST HITS is sometime put out on the market. Hopefully they wont make the mistake of excluding MYSTERY from that compilation.

this guy is one of the funniest muthafackers ive ever heard. and hes so brutally honest. he has the weirdest point of view of things. many people cant handle this. like he always says "i feel like im leading you guys into battle, you wont all be here in the end" if you dont mind vulgar crazy comedy. then check this guy out. youll love him, i know i did, he can always make me laugh.

Comedian Doug Stanhope is truly an antidote for the inoffensive blandness of many mainstream standup comedians. Hard to believe this is the same guy who hosted "The Man Show" and "Girls Gone Wild." There's no vacuous, fratboy humor here. In fact, one of the edgiest (and funniest) bits is a pro-school shootings rant in which Stanhope confesses his secret high school desire to "kill all the jocks." It is true that Stanhope's raunchy sex jokes are a big part of his appeal, but his consistent stance on behalf of the little guy (and girl) completely separates him from the dimwitted Andrew Dice Clays of the world.

All that said, "Die Laughing" is probably the best of Stanhope's CD recordings (along with "Something to Take the Edge Off"). If you're looking for a place to get acquainted with his extreme verve, this would be the place to start.

Doug Stanhope puts out a consistently off beat style of comedy. The set featured on this album lives up to the standards of his previous efforts. Doug Stanhope is a different kind of funny, kind of like watching someone beat the hell out of a Mime. His Humor is not as deep as a guy like Dennis Miller, but requires more thought than a guy like Chris Rock. I think anyone who enjoys Lewis Black, Joe Rogan, or any of Doug's previous albums will get a laugh out of this CD. If you're easily offened this CD probably isn't for you, if you have a good sense of humor and can laugh at something because it is a joke, this album is a decent buy.

Die laughing is the almost complete transformation of Stanhope from a autobiographical comic ("Sicko" is basically just all stories from his life) to one as a social critquer of our society. I personally believe Stanhope is at his best when he's doing an almost even mix of the two, as "A little something to take the edge off" was. This cd leaves the listener feeling angry at the end, which is how Doug probably intended for it to turn out, almost like talk radio does. That is not to say this cd is not funny, Stanhope on his worst day could blow the socks off of any other living comic (maybe even Hicks?) and this cd delivers many of those laugh at loud outrageous off the cuff comments you've come to expect of Stanhope. Just the theme is a little too dark. If you have Stanhope's other cds and are very familiar with him then buy this one immediately. If you are a beginner I would recommend "Something to take the edge off" first, then "Sicko" and then this cd. It's not for people who are just beginning to study the brilliance and art of Stanhope's work. (Believe me, it is truly brilliant and it is art)

For those of you haven't heard of him, Doug Stanhope is one of the most talented and outrageous comedians working stand-up today. A gifted storyteller and writer, Stanhope mines his prodigious libido and colorful life as sources for his comedy. Less autobiographical than his earlier "Sicko" (I haven't listened to his other albums), the appropriately titled "Die Laughing" finds Stanhope injecting a dose of brutal nihilism into his raunchy material. I laughed, and I laughed hard, but I certainly wasn't in a happy mood after hearing the material on this album. Stanhope is often compared to the late, great Bill Hicks, and that is in some ways an apt comparison. Both men were enemies of the forces of hypocrisy and reaction, clever satirists of the human condition, and razor-sharp storytellers and comedians. Hicks' comedy, however, though often dark and aggressive, was leavened by his belief in human evolutionary potential. By contrast, Stanhope's material is far darker, for he evinces no faith in anything beyond sex, death, and human stupidity. Hearing this album, I could almost picture Stanhope killing himself on stage as a final punch line. This isn't meant as a criticism of Stanhope's material, since its not for me to sentimentalize the purity of his vision or his role as an artist. . . Anyway, don't let the way-too pretentious blather in this review stop you from buying this album. Stanhope is a comic treasure.
