Oakland duo the Coup (Boots and DJ Pam, the funkstress) rank in the top three as far as underrated rap groups of the '90s go. That said, because lead MC Boots has no problem suggesting that big corporations are colluding with Satan and that corrupt cops disgust him ("Pork and Beef" implores listeners to "throw a Molotov at the pigs"), this release won't sit well with the apolitical crowd. In fact, the original cover artwork for Party Music depicted the duo detonating the World Trade Center. It was immediately pulled following the events of September 11, 2001. Boots' revolution will obviously not be sanitized, and on the opening track "Everything" he lays down his manifesto: "Every cop is a corrupt one without no cash up in the trust fund.... Every tried man is innocent.... Every boss better run and hide." The list of witty, counterculture songs is long, from "5 Million Ways to Kill a CEO"--a crude exposé of corporate "politricks"--to the poignant "Get Up," where they team up with everybody's other fave raptivists, Dead Prez. Raging against machines and offering solutions to problems that plague low-income communities has never come in a funkier package--the sonic backdrop is mostly live funk instrumentation--and the sheer breadth of topics covered here makes the joints of most top-selling rappers seem inane and unsubstantial. Fans of Mos Def, KRS-One, and Public Enemy will get a rise out of this one. --Dalton Higgins

For parents, listening to Dan Zanes provides not only instant Raffi relief, but also the warm sense of belonging to the right crowd. On each disc he trots out a posse of cool friends like Sheryl Crow, Suzanne Vega, and Lou Reed and he delivers his openhearted lyrics with the rare roots-rocker's gift for stirring grace into grit. It would seem that the release of his fourth record, House Party would be ripe for a backlash--how long can the hokey conceit of a bunch of aging groovsters banging out kids' tunes in a Brooklyn basement hang onto its charm? Looks like we'll have to wait and see, because House Party rages on with the same winning, welcome-to-our-homespun-revolution vibe as its predecessors. Deborah Harry takes a twirl on "Waltzing Matilda," Bob Weir fires up the "Wabash Cannonball," and Angelique Kidjo bids "Jamaica Farewell," but the Zanes originals are this record's proving grounds, and they pin the tail on the donkey with bulls-eye precision. Dan's first album...Wiggle the Wiggles out of your CD Player.......2007-06-12

You may have seen Dan on various spots on Sesame Street, I first saw him in his yellow suit, singing Jump Up. This album continues the wonderful music that my daughter has turned my wife and my self on to. The beats are there, and the lyrics are very catchy.

So do yourself a favor, swap out Wiggles or Barney for Dan and his Friends, and enjoy kids music once again.

Mr. Zanes, you could not have come along at a better time! In a market where Teletubbies, Barney and the Wiggles seem to have the corner, this parent-friendly album is a welcome relief from all the fruit salad/I love you, you love me/lemondrops and gumdrops drivel that permeate my mushy stay-at-home mom brain!

When I was a single college gal, I remember listening to very hip, fun music. Then came pregnancy and babies. Then Baby Einstein music (which is good, but sounds like someone's ballerina jewelry box after awhile), Barney, Sesame Street and nursery rhyme CDs that took over my music collection. Ack!!! What happened to me? I decided it was time to search for something new for me and the kids to listen to.

After finding this CD and loving it, I just assumed that my one-year-old and four-year-old would not like DZ because it sounded too different from what they were used to. Boy, was I wrong! My older one thinks she is listening to "cool music" -- which she is! We especially like the "Wabash Cannonball" but every song on here is a hit with my kids. The guy is truly talented, and it's just great stuff. And it's fun to hear the celeb singers on a kid's album. Finally, we all have "cool music" to listen to!

I bought this CD since Dan Zane is on the Disney Channel. My daughter absolutely loves it! She asks to hear "House Party" all day every day. We dance and sing and it has brought a lot of fun into our house.

We always look for music that is entertaining and enriching for both the toddler and the parent. We had heard Dan sing before on "For the Kids" CD and thought we'd give it a try. We all get down to Dan Zanes House Party! This CD never leaves the car player. The cover is a delightfully drawn board book of Dan & his entorage Whoopin' it up all over town. My 2 year old will "read" the book to me, explaining the pictures and making connections to the music. It's great.

His band Jane's Addiction helped grease the alternative-rock skids as the '80s hit the '90s, and Perry Farrell--pushing 50--now aims for a new decade and another century. The ethereal artist's revelry of contributors to his latest project includes one-named artists Flea and Fergie, Peter Hook (ex-New Order), and a creepy posthumous appearance by Jim Morrison. That's right: leave it to Farrell, creator of rock festival Lollapalooza and some of his genre's most impulsive music, to dust off the Lizard King, whose healthy vocal slinks and slides beneath the baiting, rhythmic lyric "Just try and stop us/We're going to love" (complete with a Ray Manzarek-like organ riff at the bridge). The novelty of "Woman in the Window" will undoubtedly generate the most attention. But Farrell's Satellite Party leaves plenty more on the table, channeling the punk-and-metal command of Jane ("Kinky," "Insanity Rains") with some of the pop sparkle of his Porno for Pyros ("Hard Life Easy," "The Solutionists"), while tossing in a couple of choice covers to boot: Rare Earth's "Just Wanna Celebrate" and the Bee Gees' "Lonely Days," recast as "Mr. Sunshine." --Scott Holter

Great party album and amazing live band!.......2007-07-17

wow. I wasn't too exposed to Jane's addiction or Nuno's stuff...so my fairly unbias opinion is that this is a really good party album!

The tunes are mostly groovy and definitely grow on you. Admittedly, the thought of Jim Morrison's voice on a song sounded way weird to me, but I love that song! Ton's of other guests too.

SP is a great live act also! I am super excited to see them several times over the next three months as they are on tour with a band (that I probably like even more :-X) called MINK. Mink is another electric live band that really is great party music, but with a little more rock edge than SP. Two great bands touring for three months, do yourself a favor and see them (Mink's self titled debut comes out late August, don't miss out).

Five stars for satellite party's debut.

Don't think Jane's Addiction!.......2007-07-10

I'll start by saying I'm a huge Perry Farrell fan. I'm into his work with Jane's Addiction the most (I think the live, self-titled album is their greatest work). Satellite Party- Ultra Payloaded is definately upbeat and funky throughout- but I prefer the Perry Farrell that can be upbeat and funky as well as racy, deep and cutting edge. You don't get that side of his art in the lyrics on this album. "Wish Upon A Dog Star" is an obvious hit single attempt- all hooks, no substance. Perry is an incredibly talented writer and it saddens me to say his writing seems to have taken a step back on this album- the lyrics are under-developed and sing-song. Possibly some influence from Nuno (Extreme) may have caused the music on this album to be a lot "lighter" than what fans of Perry's music are really craving. There is some interesting guitar and bass work on the album, but nothing mind-blowing. The album is mediocre to good- better than that local band your sister raves about, not NEAR the calibur of Jane's Addiction or even Porno For Pyros. All that said, I have full faith that I will enjoy the material from this album a heck of a lot more when I see it performed live- Perry's just that great of a performer!

begining of something .......2007-06-20

i hope this marks the begining of a new avenue for perry ...this sound could provide a rich texture much like janes did for all of us years ago . this a good cd more like 3 1/2 stars but not a 3 . not a waste of money . good house party tracks on here as well as some good stuff to add to your playlist . i would recommend it , great summer music....not angry like janes was ...but that fit the time much like this does...

Perry Farrell has created a fun album of funky tunes that make you want to dance. He's supported by a good group of musicians who help him bring the songs to life. Most notable of these musicians is one of the most awesome guitar players the world has ever known - Nuno Bettencourt! Nuno also helped with production duties, clearly helping to give the songs that funky groove he's well known for and adding a few great guitar riffs and solos here and there to spice things up. It's safe to say that this album is not groundbreaking in any way but it certainly offers you some good sounds and fun grooves to help liven up your next party. Favourite songs include the groovy "Wish Upon a Dogstar" and "Celebrate" which has a bit of an Extreme (Nuno's former band) influence to it and the nice mid-album ballad "Awesome". Play it loud and have some fun!

What would a party be like on a commercial space flight? What would the music sound like? These are the questions Perry Farrell would like you to answer by listening to his Satellite Party. You know when you look at the night sky with all the constellations, and there's one star apart from the rest? That's where Perry claims the party is. Ultra Payloaded collectively contains elements as old as symphony and as modern as electronic programming.

Without Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme) on guitar, the music wouldn't fit the name. Nuno's style is perfect for the Satellite Party name, bringing funky riffs and radiant solos to the space flight table. As expected, Perry Farrell's voice is still unique. Featured appearances on this album which bring a poppy and alternative flavor are John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Peter Hook (New Order), and Fergie (Black Eyed Peas). Nearing the end of the album, a nice surprise is "Woman In The Window," with spoken word never before released by the late Jim Morrison.

While Perry Farrell's Satellite Party won't make as big of a splash as Jane's Addiction has, it's more impressive than Porno for Pyros and certainly worth the listen for Farrell fans.

Good companion for Battlestar Fans.......2007-05-07

If you're a Battlestar Galatica Fan, this audio is an excellent companion to your collection. Passacaglia, Forgiven, and The Shape of Things to Come are emotional and addictive orchestral soundtracks. Not every song from the first season is included in this CD. The opening credit songs for the UK and the US versions and the battle songs (The Thousandth Landing, Battle on the Asteroid) are included. Battlestar Muzaktica is quite odd and doesn't fit with the collection of songs.

Captures the feel of the show.......2007-04-11

Has a great selection of songs from the 1st season. I like show/movie CDs that you can picture the scenes and emotion of the actors when you hear the song. The Celtic underlays are great, and the Taiko drumming style is very well used for building intensity in the music. If you really like the series, you should probably really enjoy the music as well!

Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-04-11

If you like the music in a scene that just blends in and makes the scene even more emotional or suspenseful, that is what the scores from season one do on this cd. I initially bought it to for the prologue (cylon music) and the two main titles (U.S. and U.K.) but after listening to the entire cd, I have become completely addicted to it. The titles of the scores usually give you a hint of the scene and the liner notes also tell you the episode that they are from but the soundtrack has definitely made rewatching season one an even more intriguing experience. The scores with words, are written by Bear and are in various languages, but the words, especially the opera piece, are actually so dead one with the scene and in this specific scene hilarious. I love this soundtrack. If you are someone who is addicted to really grasping everything that happens in this show and watch and analyze it beyond face value, this is an added bonus to have in your collection. I highly recommend it!!!

Man I love the Classic and the Present BSG's So Inaturally find the SoundTrack/Score A joy and very relaxing. They tend to sound very similar but they are very diffrent.

There have been lots of raving reviews of this album, as well as the equally sensational season 2 soundtrack. I just wanted to add my opinion on one track, "Destiny". An earlier review describes an Arabic string instrument being used, but it is actually a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument that has such a distinct sound that it's hard to imagine it being used for anything other than traditional gagaku music. I don't know if anyone but McCreary has ever tried to use this instrument for something else, but it hardly matters. The fact that McCreary managed to use it so effectively in a piece that is so different from gagaku music is a perfect testament to his unique genius. I'm really looking forward to following McCreary's career.

Bloc Party may have arrived in an outbreak of like-minded British bands set upon shooting holes in the Union Jack while knocking out a sharp post-punk soundtrack, but it didn't take long for the foursome to set itself apart from the pack. Fronted by Nigerian-born singer Kele Okereke, the group's 2005 debut, Silent Alarm, soared as much on crystal ambition as it did on ridiculously danceable pop melodies. This follow-up is darker, more cluttered, and harder to digest. That doesn't make it less striking. Don't tag this as "indie" or "alternative" There is absolutely nothing exciting or indie about this album. The quirky, rough-around-the-edges, diverse songs of the first album have been replaced by top 40 radio wannabee garbage. I think even the band members know how horrible this album is compared to the first. They'll be opening for John Mayer or Matchbox 20 soon....

Nearly up to Par.......2007-07-19

I am a huge fan of Bloc Party, and ever since I discovered them, I have loved listening to their music. Their first debut, Silent Alarm, is an excellent album, and I kept that in mind when I purchased thier follow up album, A Weekend in the City. I must say that I was disappointed at first, mainly because A Weekend in the City is not the same as Silent Alarm. I was expecting the same catchy hooks, bouncy rhythms, and light pop rock sound. Bloc Party's second album is not the same as their first. I definitely applaud them for trying to maintain innovation, and not always play the same thing. Just recently I have started to listen to A Weekend in the City more often, and the more I listen to it, the more it grows on me. AWitC is darker, edgier, and plays with a raw, uneven sound. Even still, I think it is a good album that solid Bloc Party fans should invest in, or any lover of alt rock. "The Prayer" is the catchy hook song of the album, while "Hunting for Witches" has a neat and inventive sound. "I Still Remember" has traces of Silent Alarm's "Blue Light" in that it is mellow, melodic, and beautiful. I look forward to Bloc Party's next release, whenever it may come, and suggest going for AWitC. This album grows on you, and is really different than Silent Alarm. Change is good.

seriously. fingers out. put it on the cd sleeve. keep still and wait a few seconds...

okay. maybe if you have an imagination in hyperdrive but still, my point is that while "Weekend in the City" may lack the dancier and poppier aspects "Silent Alarm" posessed, the fact they've gone DEEPER into the instrumentals and textures and ambient noises make it so much more fulfilling! anyone can dish out some drum machine beats and a catchy guitar hook, and while this album definitely has that (hello? "Sunday" anyone?), I love how they took the direction of my personal favorite from "Silent Alarm" ("So here we Are") and just built so much on that.

Is "Weekend in the City" an album full of club-banger hits for the indie kids who still call themselves "hipsters" without irony? Probably not. Is it an album good for introspection while wandering around at 2am downtown in the city (not smart, but appealing!)? Most definitely. buy this album. you won't regret it.

A Solid, but Less Upbeat, Sophomore Album.......2007-06-29

There was a time, about a year and a half ago, when I considered Bloc Party to be one of my favorite bands. I listened to their debut, Silent Alarm, almost obsessively and still consider it one of my favorite albums - whether I needed something energetic or pensieve, I could, and still can, find it on that album.

Naturally I was excited about A Weekend In The City before I ever heard it, and upon hearing it I wasn't sure what to think. The first six of the album's eleven songs grew on me immensely, while the second half of the album blurred together without any of the songs making an impression on me. Upon revisiting them, I realized that the immediately listenable songs didn't necessarily have longterm playability; conversely, the five final songs reflect just as much, if not more care than the other tracks -unfortunately, when listened to consecutively, they do tend to sound similar. Listen to them separately, and they really do shine: particularly, 'I Still Remember' and 'Sunday' didn't really grab me when I first heard them, but now rank among my favorites by the band.

All in all, AWITC is a slower album to enjoy than its predecessor, with more of a focus on setting soundscapes than writing hooks for catchy choruses. If you enjoyed the more contemplative parts of Silent Alarm, you'll love A Weekend in the City. Otherwise, expect to spend more time becoming acquainted with the work here.

Is It So Wrong to Crave Recognition?.......2007-06-16

I saw this band on Late Night with Conan O'Brian and I was very impressed with their live performance of "The Prayer." The singer was Black, but his style was somewhere between, Robert Smith, of The Cure, and Feli Kuti, the Nigerian singer and Afrobeat band leader. Turns out the band was fronted by Nigerian-born singer Kele Okereke. The rest of the band looked like a lot of post-punk limey slackers, and by gum, they were exactly that.

From London and South East United Kingdom, this latest deconstruction and reassembly of the modern sound is astounding, indeed. "The Prayer" sounds like some kind of Gregorian chant, or possibly the throat singing of Tibetian monks. The ominous hum builds and is joined by the coolest guitar riff since Satisfaction, a crisp Telecaster riff, at once primative and modern. When Kele Orereke begins to sing, a similar mixture of modern and primative ensues, as electric guitars, bass, and drums, fraternize with an African chant. Lots of shifting tempos, noise and melody, melody OF noise, dance tempos, irresistable beats.

I found their page on MySpace and watched the video for "The Prayer" and some other songs. "The Prayer" video is very good, and it just shows some modern urban kids out for a night on the town, trying to find a cool club in which to dance. Kele is a face in the crowd, lost in the shuffle, but he knows if they would only give him a chance, they would see that he is really a unique phenomenon, worthy of their attention and patience. The lyrics are really very powerful.

Another video shows the band playing on a train, and is like one long pan from car to car of a moving train. Some kind of special effects technique was involved, because it seems like the eye of the camera dollys through the entire train, from engine to caboose, and the band and Kele keep popping up on every car.

Other videos show band members as animated cartoon characters. Shades of Scoobey Doo, or at least The Gorillaz.

I have just discovered this band, but from what I have seen so far, I am very impressed, and will pursue hearing more of their excellent music. A good place to start is on their MySpace page, and if you are intrigued like I was, you can get this album, A Weekend in the City, or else try their first album, Silent Alarm.

When I first learned that Shirley was releasing yet another remix album, I was disappointed, as I was hoping for an album of all new material. But I was pleasantly surprised. The entire album is very enjoyable, and the two new songs, Get The Party Started and The Living Tree, is some of her best work. At 70, her voice is still amazing and a joy to listen to. I would have rated this album 5 stars if it contained all new material. To this day, Dame Shirley Bassey rocks my world!!!!

Welsh/Nigerian songstress, Dame Shirley Bassey, returns with an album of classics with a contemporary twist. Produced by a slew of cutting edge producers and remixers like Bugz in the attic, and North by northwest, the project was driven by the Dame herself.

Best known by some for the Bond theme songs she sang; "Diamonds are forever", "Goldfinger". And "Moonraker", the 13 songs on this collection are heavily influenced by that. The album has already given Dame Shirley Bassey her first UK top 10 album in some decades and deservedly so.

"The living tree" is arguably the best Bond record that never was, with it's Trip Hop feel; a brooding sound, sweeping dramatic strings and explosive vocal delivery (her voice is as booming as ever - she doesn't do things by halves) from the seventy year old Dame. Similar is the self assertive "This is my life".

Lionel Richie's "Hello" is given a haunting, atmospheric treatment. Nicole's dad would be proud of the result. The lightly horn sprinkled "Can I touch you there" (the Michael Bolton song) is similarly transformed (lovely percussion and nice male harmonies).

"I who have nothing" is given a slight dub feel, while "I will survive" is transformed by epic sounding strings and skittery percussion. "What now my love" has a slight salsa feel. "You only live twice" (originally done by Nancy Sinatra) is covered superbly here, downplaying the Bond feel, and giving it a light Cuban feel.

"Where is the love" is given the disco treatment (superb sax outro, by the way), similar to her "Moonraker" hit, and her old hit "Big spender" starts off startingly like Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" in its new incarnation.

The title track is a rousing reworking of Pink's "Get the party started" with dramatic strings, and crisp enunciation from the Dame.

It is amazing to see a veteran like Dame Shirley Bassey still sounding cutting edge and not resting on her laurels. If you like your music bland and safe, this might not be for you.

Her other album of remixes, "Diamonds are forever: the remix album" is also worth checking out. "Get the party started" is a wonderful aural experience!!

Slavic Soul Party bills itself as the "No. 1 brass band for Balkan-soul-gypsy-funk." While the competition may be a bit thin in this niche genre, there is no argument about the validity of the tag. The band, made up of members of varying backgrounds from the U.S. and Japan, introduces the brash-but-intricate horn lines of the Balkans and adds some New Orleans grit and groove to the stew. On the Brooklyn-based group's third album, one can't help but marvel at the ensemble playing of knotty horn lines on tunes by leader Matt Moran (the percolating "Ruchenista!" stands out) or Slavic traditionals like the sadly romantic "Djelem Djelem," which features guest vocalist Eva Salina Primack. Those ready to party need look no further than the uproarious "Vrainje" or the title track. When I first heard about this on NPR, I immediately got a big grin. This is a fun, funky collection of tunes. I'm also a big fan of The Art of Noise, so take that into account. This isn't full of sound effects, just cool tunes with a fun beat.

Family Force 5 delivers an onslaught from the first second to the very end. It's a wall of sound from start to finish that is some of the most fun you're likely to ever hear (unless they ever release an equally good sophomore album, etc).

This is the perfect crank-it-up, piss off your neighbors, head-banging kind of music. And it's great to scream along to.

Family Force 5 is one of the best bands out there! their music is super catchy and you'll wanna sing it all day long... I DO! So I thought the 3 new tracks deserved a try..........2007-03-29

Before Diamond Edition came out, I had purchased their previous album containing all of the tracks off of Diamond Edition with the exception of 3. I purchased this new one mostly because I had found their music so catchy, and perhaps 3 new tracks would give me something new by them to listen to. What first was odd to me is the album art. Amazon displays a large black album art with a sparkly Family Force 5 logo. I opened up my package to find that mine did as well, but it's just wrapping that packages the CD case and you have to actually take that off. So all of a sudden I am introduced to a new album art: a red background, and a skull and crossbones (the crossbones being keyboards of some sort). I was surprised that Amazon wouldn't display the actual album art. Anxious to hear the 3 new tracks, I immediately popped the CD into my player. I have a quick review of each of the 3 tracks:

I Love You to Death - Cool guitaring, lyrics are a bit repetitive and cheesy, but the beat is really catchy. I'd give this one a 4/5.

Face Down - This is the song that I can't seem to get into. It doesn't sound much like Family Force 5 at all. I have listened to it many times to see if it would grow on me. It mostly seems like a filler song. I'd give it a 2/5.

Never Let Me Go - This is probably my favorite of the 3. Very catchy vocals and effects. Guitaring sounds great. Chorus is fun. Definitely a cool beat. Overall, 5/5.

Hope this helps anyone who has purchased Business Up Front, Party in the Back in the past and basically wants to know if 3 new tracks is worth the cash. I'd say I'm satisfied overall. It's great to hear something new from them.

Styled more along the lines of a revolutionary cell than a band, Bloc Party approach the medium of rock'n'roll with the sort of high seriousness usually reserved for philosophy lectures. Yet on Silent Alarm, this "autonomous unit" of smart, wiry London youth don't just succeed in reinvigorating the artform--they come pretty close to reinventing it from the ground up. Whereas early singles like "She's Hearing Voices" found the band still attempting to chisel their own image out of familiar post-punk reference points--The Fall, Joy Division, and Gang Of Four, to name but three--newer tracks such as "Like Eating Glass" and the prickly "Price Of Gas" find Bloc Party pioneering a freshly-minted template of staccato percussion, expansive soundscapes, and cryptic lyrics that artfully straddle the political and the personal. Russell Lissack has forsaken that overdone hallmark of post-punk, brittle tortured-fretboard skronk, in favor of an effects-laden guitar sound that adds genuine prettiness to Bloc Party's edgy rush. But it's Kele Okereke's vocal that's the band's most flexible facet, morphing from frothing anger to breathless desperation. "Are you hoping for a miracle?" he bays, on "Helicopter". Yes? Bloc Party have been riding the wave of critical acclaim and comes with no surprise. Their debut album is one of those works whose style seems so easy to classify, but upon further investigation, lacks any simple categorization. Put simply, this album is bloody brilliant. Instead of constructing another cliche rock album with standard hooks, Bloc Party opt for complex rhythmic constructions and unconventional song structures. The result is a fresh spark of originality in a genre that, at least from current radio output, seemed destined towards banality. Whether he is yelping in frustration or crooning a ballad, Kele's voice supplements the tight orchestration from the other band members (with a fantastic Matt Tong on drums). "Like Eating Glass" is a perfect opener for the album, combining the sense of urgency and trend in a way that is hard to describe, but easy to appreciate. "Helicopter", "Banquet", "Positive Tension", and "She's Hearing Voices" are tracks that mesh jagged, angular riffs with the disillusioned frustrations of Kele. And on the other end of the spectrum, "Blue Light" and "This Modern Love" are lovely, soft ballads. The incredibly gorgeous "So Here We Are" does away with conventional song structure, opting for a beautifully crafted crescendo. The result is one of the most heartfelt songs I have heard in ages. When the final cascades of chords arrive, with Kele singing "Hold on, I've figured it out!", the result is simply ecstatic. Finally, "Compliments" closes out the album with a state of meditative suspension. Bloc Party is the first band in a long time has delivered an album of solid aesthetic merit. In the song "Pioneers", Kele sings "We will not be the last, we will not be last." I hope that he keeps this promise.

She's Hearing Voices.......2007-07-14

And so am I, Kele and Gordon's specifically. Mixed cross-firing angular guitars, anguished vocal delivery, emotionally devastated lyrics, and danceable firework drumming Bloc Party explodes out the speakers with a cool intensity that commercial music has lost. The clean Fender guitar sound lends itself well to the alternately ambient and aggressive playing of Russell and (generally) grounded rhythm stylings of Kele. Gordon's bass playing throughout the album displays a solid rock know how in constructing parts that both hold up the rest of the song while also being individually listenable.

All the songs fire on all cylinders; even the ballends such a "Blue Light", "Complements" and "So Here We Are" hit home with intensity rather than outright speed. The rockers like Helicopter, Positive Tension, She's Hearing Voices, and Little Thoughts rush along powered forward by Matt's drumming, pulled skyward with racy guitar lines and thicked up with rich bass. The only dud is "The Price of Gas" which happens to be the only moment that Kele's ranting goes to downright annoying with the repeated yelling of phrases like "Is that a FA-CT, Is that a FA-CT, Is that a FA-CT". It really kills the momentum of the album to the extent that nine times out of ten I skip it. Otherwise this is a 5 star album, with beautiful production values and a band performing like finely tuned sports car; racing, weaving, speeding up, and slowing down with almost unimaginable hast and ease.

Influential, to say the least..........2007-07-07

It's very rare for me to get around to writing a review for any album, let alone a British pop group. However, this album compels me to make the time to put in my two cents.

I'm under the notion that Third Eye Blind's first self-titled release in 1996 (?) was one of the most influential albums of the 90s, given its unbelievable accessibility, the amount of radio-play for at least 4 singles, and the last 4 tracks on the album which were, in my opinion, better than any of the singles, including Jumper and How's it Gonna Be. Third Eye Blind set out a different pace and track for future bands to follow. Whether or not you like their next 2 albums, just throw their first release in your player and give it a spin, beginning to end, and come back later.

Having said that, Bloc Party's 2005 release is already the most memorable output of the 21st century concerning rock/pop/dance/indie/hipster, whatever the hell you want to call the conglomerate of those different genres. I'll stake the claim that, come 2011, you'll want to keep this album in your short-list of reliable things to listen to. Spectacular, blood-pumping highs ("Like Eating Glass," "Positive Tension," "This Modern Love") and impossible-to-ignore introspective tracks ("Banquet," "So Here We Are," "Plans," "Compliments") than any album of at least the past five years.

If you already own it, pay special attention to the final 5 tracks. If you don't own it, get it, jam out to the first 6 or 7 songs for a few weeks, then throw out "Plans" and "Compliments" back-to-back for your listening enjoyment. When an album does not have a skippable track on it, you know you've found something special.

One heck of a debut.......2007-06-27

They may be a bit over-hyped, but Bloc Party is still a group with a lot of talent and a very unique style. The whole album is very enjoyable, not just the singles.

Very close reproductions to the original artist. Your guests will never know that they aren't listening to the originals because they will be too busy dancing and watching their family and freinds having a great time. What a ripoff!.......2007-06-13

I can't believe I didn't read the reviews before buying this piece of "$*#. What a waste of money! Nowhere in the description does it say that these are not sung by the original artist!!! False advertising!! I guess it lists "Drew's Famous Party Music" where it normally puts the artist, but I figured that was the company who put the cd together and not the name of some lame coverband.

We're doing an iPod wedding exactly for this reason, because I want original music and not someone's bad rendition of a great song.

DO NOT BUY THIS!!! Buy a compilation of the originals instead!

After a long night of intoxication I wound up buying this cd set. This is for childrens parties, meant for those who either don't know or don't care
about the original quality recordings. If your reputation or pocket book is not at stake this compelation is decent. Save your money for the real thing. Support the original artists it's worth it.

A great set of dance tunes for kids.......2007-01-15

Lots of songs that my teenagers danced to as they were growing up (the Macarena, the Chicken Dance, Electric Slide, etc.). I'm using this as an indoor alternative when teaching physical education to 4th graders.

I bought one of these CD's many years ago and found out the hard way. What a joke and a ripoff. No original artists and nowhere on the CD does it say this. I never bought another one.

¡Baila!.is a global Latin party featuring salsa, cumbia, and meringue mixed with contemporary dance beats and rhythms. The party starts in the streets of Havana before hitting the road. Raul Paz kicks it off with "Mua Mua Mua," seamlessly blending the deep grooves of his native Cuba with the contemporary stylings he's picked up since relocating to France. Back in Cuba NG La Banda offer "La Cachimba" their mission statement announcing the virtues of a new musical style that's sure to make you dance. Next the party travels to Colombia, where the collective known as La-33 is revitalizing salsa by reconnecting it to the genre's golden era of the 1960s and 70s. Not to be outdone, however, New York delivers a rhythm-driven one-two punch with The Spanish Harlem Orchestra and Yerba Buena contributing the best of the old school and the new. Perfect from start to finish!.......2007-05-31

An absolutely irresistable collection of dance salsa! The first two cuts are absolutely spectacular. Everything else is nearly as strong. There is not a throw-away on this CD. I took a Cuban Salsa dance lesson recently, and the instructor played "Mua Mua Mua" 3 or 4 times every lesson for 7 lessons, and the class never tired of it, we just loved the song more each time! The entire CD stands up well to repeated listening. It has a nice variety, with a couple tracks having a reggaeton sound, and a couple cumbias, while sticking closer to true cuban salsa rather that the Americanized club sound. Mostly though the sound is pure and true Salsa. If that is what you are looking for, this is a must have disc!

Love Putumayo music.......2007-01-05

This is one of my favorite Putumayo cds, although I love them all. It is fun, energetic and makes my 19 month old son show us his moves! A must for music lovers.

New Style Salsa and Latin Flavors.......2006-08-28

Putumayo always puts out a quality product, and this disc is no exception. The collection of salsa and latin rhythyms is a collection spanning several countries, but all of the tracks are lively upbeat and fun. several of the tracks include electronic elements, such as electric drumbeats and samples. This allows the listeners to see what is being done with a now classic genre to revitalize it. this new generation of Salseros breathes new life into a now-classic music style.
I would recomend this for any casual listener interested in hearing some modern style salsa music. fun to dance to and upbeat and cheery.

TRULY A SENSATIONAL PIECE!.......2006-05-24

This music makes you want to get up and dance! The first few tracks are the best, but the whole CD is very good. I could not stop listening to son fro by africando and many more. Hide this CD because once you pop it in, your friends will never want to give it back to you. After owning gypsy caravan, afro-latino, afro latin party, salsa around the world, cuba and many more i have come to say that this is one of the best putumayo we have seen up to date. Also check out putumayo colombia-It is sure to get you dancing like you have never danced before!
