Amazon.com essential recording
Band on the Run should have been a disaster. Two of Wings' original members quit in a huff just before its production. The whimsical decision to record in Lagos, Nigeria, became a nightmare when McCartney and company found themselves in a decaying studio, then had many of the project's demos stolen by armed bandits. Despite these hardships--perhaps because of them--Band on the Run remains the most focused and consistently satisfying record of McCartney's wildly uneven post-Beatles career. This mini box set contains the original album, a well-written booklet by Mark Lewisohn, and a bonus disc featuring outtake snippets and interviews with all the album's participants (including its cover crew, which includes actors James Coburn and Christopher Lee) and Dustin Hoffman, who recounts how he spurred McCartney to spontaneously write "Picasso's Last Words" on a dare. This second disc would make a fine radio show; it comes up short where it matters most--in music. Time spent detailing the album-cover photo session could have been more gratifyingly devoted to more contemporary outtakes (much of the bonus Band material is culled from live performances from as recently as the mid '90s; perhaps McCartney wants us to know how important the record has been to him over the years) or to a pair of single B-sides, which are curiously absent here. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Classic Early 70's Rock Album.......2007-05-05
The best and most successful Rock album Paul McCartney, with Wings released. It is a classic rock album worthy of its praise, its boldness and McCartney was back with a bang with an emphatic message to the music world.
1. Band on the Run - A classic.
2. Jet - A classic. What a one-two punch to kick of the album?
3. Bluebird - Beautiful harmonies. Underrated.
4. Mrs. Vandebilt - A silly story song made good by Paul's great vocals and great musicianship of his trio.
5. Let Me Roll It - Remains a concert staple and fan favourite. This song is best performed live, the studio version is a weaker immitation of the real thing, which is live baby.
6. Mamunia - The melody master near his best, but many people don't know this song, it is a pleasure to listen to. Macca's voice is at its clearest, the band harmonises in peak form.
7. No Words - Has a Beatles/Badfinger sound to it. Paul and Denny harmonising is really something to hear.
8. Helen Wheels - A fun and catchy rocker, nothing earth shaking.
9. Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me) - Macca's musical response to a Dustin Hoffman challange. Its a great song, I love the drunken feel to the music, great engineering.
10. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five - A pulsating climax to the album, most of Pauls best albums finish with a bang.
Wings Band on the Run.......2007-03-10
The Wings roll it to you on the run, how great it is.
One Of The Finest Rock Albums Ever Made, No Question About It........2007-03-04
By 1974, Paul McCartney's solo career had an interesting conflict associated with it. He scored big with his first few solo albums, scoring big with hit singles like "Another Day", "Live And Let Die" and "My Love". His loyal fanbase was broader than ever.
However, Paul and his newly formed band Wings were ripped apart by music critics who felt John and George's solo work was far more innovative and overall worth owning. Paul decided to put an end to this criticism. He, along with his wife Linda and his fellow Wings bandmates, jetted down to Legolas in Africa to record what would become one of the best rock albums ever made. After several months that resulted in various technical problems as well as a mugging, "Band On The Run" was released.
"Band On The Run" is, to put it in simple terms, an awesome album. This is Paul at his best. This the Paul we all know and love. He is loose, focused and clearly enjoying himself along with the rest of the band. The album opens with the classic title track, which starts off as a slow, kind of whiny number, then picks up the pace a bit as an ominous revnge fantasy, then, out of nowhere, the horns flair up as if it were some sort of musical exodus, you can feel the rain exploding with a mighty crash drenching you. It's one of the most stunning musical moments on record.
From here on in, the album never lets up. "Jet" is a McCartney classic and a concert staple. A fast paced, wild rocker with a blast your throat out chorus and classic riff. "Helen Wheels" is a crazed bulldozer of a number that will blow your speakers out if played too loudly. This is Paul at his most raucous. "Let Me Roll It" is a blueslier number, a great love song that remains a concert showstopper. "Bluebird" and the lovely "Mamunia" provide the more mellow moments here, but do not drag down the album at all. The vitriolic "No Words" is a raw, gutsy ballad with some of Paul's most cynical and best lyrics ever. "Picasso's Last Words" is a three part chronicling of the last hours before the passing of the famous artist, complete with a singalong chorus and French interlude. The closing "Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five" is an out and out musical extravaganza complete with intense instrumental breaks and some fine piano work by Sir Paul. The one clunker is "Mrs. Vanderbilt", and even that's fine for what it is.
Disc 2 is the real treat. You get Paul performing various renditions of certain tracks (including several different variations of the title track), live performances, and tour rehearsals (including a blistering version of "Jet). The interviews detailing the arduous but enjoyable recording process is a thrill. To hear Paul as well as people like Geoff Edwards, Christopher Lee, James Coburn and many others give their input. The most entertaining interview by far comes from none other than a man who is to cinema what Paul is to music, the legendary Dustin Hoffman, whose fantastic detailing of his influence on "Picasso's Last Words" is a joy to listen to. Paul and Dustin should collaborate more often.
The booklet and photo spread are excellent bonuses, and this is an album all music fans need to have.

I have the vinyl, can't wait to recieve the CD!!! This will be played daily along with my Beatles CDs!!
Back in the day.......2007-02-12
As far as Paul McCartney's career away from The Beatles was, this was good it gets. The cd is great from Top to Bottom and a classic rock cd and deserves a spot in any classic rock collection. Truth be known when I was much younger 17; me and my friend would have a contest who could roll one the best before Paul could say Let Me Roll It in my most favorite tune on the cd, but it was an album back then.

Customer Reviews:
Great stress reliever.......2007-05-12
My husband was in the hospital for three months, earlier this year. A friend told me about "On Eagles' Wings", which she listened to in times of stress. I bought a copy for myself and discovered that listening to this beautiful music helped take my mind off of all my worries. Many of my favorite hymns are included on this CD, as well as on "The Spirit Soars", by Steve Hall, which I also own now and like very much.
Very good CD.......2006-06-11
This CD has the best version of "Morning Has Broken" that I have ever heard. I have listened to many different renditions of it but none match up to this one in my opinion. All in all this is a great, relaxing and pure CD.
Track #11- Climb Ev'ry Mountain.......2006-05-27
I came across this album in Astoria, Oregon in a gift shop.
The owner had it playing on her sound system. One song finished
then Steve's majestic piano opening of "Climb Ev'ry Mountain"
began. Before I knew it my face was wet with tears as I stood
there transfixed by his interpretation of this melody, I had been
through much the months before, and I still was very sad and depressed. Just like Maria receiving loving guidance from her
Mother Superior at the convent, I felt lifted up and strengthened
by this. Needless to say the shop owner was at a loss for words when she saw a 6'2" 250+ lb man weeping silently, eyes closed, in the middle of her store. After I regained some semblence of composure I had to buy that album. Now I have an archive copy.
Listen to Track #11. Let it lift you up to see that your dreams
aren't that far away. In fact, the sun is coming over the mountains to meet you. And may God bless.
intergalactically yours,
E3
Great song collection, everyone needs a copy of this CD........2004-05-14
I found this CD quite a few years ago in a beautiful little giftshop in the Lake Arrowhead (in the Southern California mountains). It is a great collection and Steve plays so well. People will ask to if they can borrow your CD, but you will never get it back!
Steve Hall's On Eagle's Wings.......2003-07-01
This is the most relaxing CD I have ever listened to. When I am driving home late at night this is what I pop into my CD player cause it is so relaxing and it doesn't even make me fall asleep. His music just flows, and it is the best one of his that I have heard. I would highly recommend it to everyone who likes relaxing music.

Best known to American audiences for his long-running title role in the Broadway smash-hit Phantom of the Opera, Michael Crawford issued On Eagle's Wings as the predecessor to his Emmy-winning PBS special of 1998. Blessed with charisma and classically superlative pipes, Crawford does a nice turn with his collection of easy-listening sacred and inspirational tunes. Christians with a penchant for show tunes and flowery vocals will delight in Crawford's renditions of "Amazing Grace" (with additional vocals by Maire Brennan), "I'll Walk with God," and "Ave Maria." Eagle's Wings closes with the splendid "Now the Day Is Over," featuring strong orchestration and the pleasing tones of both the American Boys Choir and the Saint Olaf Choir. --Paige La Grone
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Beautiful.......2007-05-16
This is one of those albums that you cherish. Michael Crawford's beautiful, clear voice brings all these songs to life. My favorite is the title song, On Eagle's Wings. When I am feeling a little uncertain, or when beginning a new phase of my life, listening to On Eagle's Wings gets my heart and soul ready to 'rise up with wings as eagle's' and face the new adventure. I bought this recent CD as a gift for good friends. It is one of those gifts that keeps on giving.
A Wonderful Album!.......2007-03-23
This is the one that got me interested in Michael Crawford. I'd heard the Phantom recording years ago. I had this for several years and took it to work one day to listen to and I was hooked.
I enjoy all of the songs, especially "The Holy City". All I can say is Michael Crawford sings like an angel on this album.
Not Crawford's best genre..........2006-12-01
I know that I'm bucking the trend of this well-reviewed album, but I was rather disappointed by it. I really enjoyed Michael Crawford as Phantom and appreciate the power and depth of his voice in that production. I had hoped that he would bring the same style to this collection of Christian classics.
Instead, most of these tracks seem rather breathy and weak. I suspect that Crawford is losing some of the strength of his voice, as everyone does when they age. But I was continually left with the disappointment that he was almost singing in a whisper for some of these songs.
The saving grace of this album is the song selection. There are some truly great pieces of music. I just did not think that Crawford brought the right style and tone to this recording. It's somewhat pleasant but ultimately unremarkable, and I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone except Crawford's diehard fans.
On Eagle's Wings by Michael Crawford.......2006-11-11
A beautiful CD by a man with a powerful voice!
Heavenly Record.......2006-06-16
An absolutely wonderful and Heavenly Record. Could listen to it over and over again. Saw Michael Crawford in "Phantom of the Opera" and was absolutely bowled over by his voice,no hint of which we had been given in his UK TV work. I was simply looking for a recording of "On Eagles Wings" and when his name came up as singing it, had no hesitation to buying his version. Would like to rate it higherthan 5 stars!!

dang that gal can sing!.......2006-03-10
i was already a fan of lori mckenna when i saw her on oprah with faith hill. personally, i think lori's version (the original) of the song 'fireflies' is waaaay better than faith's rendition. i also like lori's voice better - sorry to any faith fans! mckenna's voice has a folksy, fluttering sound that draws you in - her voice catches and your heart feels that ole pull. her songs are so breathtakingly real and down-to-earth, yet they are lyrical and poetic at the same time.
beautiful work!

Very nice.........2006-01-11

Muffled.......2005-10-05
I just learned of Lori McKenna from the Oprah show with Faith Hill. I typed in her name in "keyword" and was amazed that she was so popular and had made several albums!
From reading about her, she is an amazing person and I really wanted to own all of her albums, but I can barely understand what she is saying, however, I still plan to buy at least one just because I can relate to her depth, her sincerity, her
honesty, her perception of life.
I regret saying this, but I hope someone down the line continues to make her songs (like Faith Hill did) so that we can fully understand and appreciate them. Lori is a wonderful person, so
this, in no way, is meant to be offensive.
I just can't make out much of what she is saying.
Love it!.......2004-05-01
I love the music on this CD. I find myself playing it over and over. If I have my MP3 player on random, I always stop to listen (and sing) whenever one of these songs comes on. I first heard her on NPR, and I have loved every song from her I've heard. Her voice takes some getting used to, but the songs grow on you the more you hear them. Paper Wings and Halo and Would you Love Me Then are two of my favorites.

Album Description
The process of choosing music for a wedding day can certainly be a daunting process for any couple. There are many choices and the questions can be endless. Traditional music or something off the beaten path? Will your Mom cry (and not in a good way) if you do not come down the aisle to the traditional Wedding March from Wagner, or are you eager to try something new? This collection is designed to give the bridal couple some key pointers to navigate the world of classical music for their wedding day. The package includes over 3 1/2 hours of music on 3 CDs for all portions of the wedding service, all from the Naxos classical label (known for high-quality recordings at inexpensive prices). Wedding day favorites are there, along with new discoveries and tunes you may have never considered for a wedding. All pieces are hand selected by professional wedding musicians and consultants. As a bonus, the 20 page booklet will lead you through the process of choosing music, from hiring musicians to sample programs. Everything you need to create your own unique personal wedding soundtrack.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT WEDDING MUSIC!.......2007-01-24
I used these CD's for my wedding, and I was so happy I did. You need to buy this CD if you like having a traditional wedding! :)
Good Music.......2006-07-05
I bought these CDs for my wedding, in ceremony and reception. Also, when I created my own wedding video, I used it as background music.
A very complete selection of ceremony music!.......2005-02-02
I am getting married in several months and we couldn't decide what music we wanted at our wedding ceremony. This three disk compilation reminded us of all the great ones- including new options we hadn't thought about. I really enjoyed hearing the organ and strings versions of the songs. If you're someone who hears a classical or baroque piece of music, but can't remember the name or the precise tune, this is a must-have to jog your memory and trigger the tear ducts!
Comprehensive Classical Selection.......2004-04-15
I searched all over for a CD set that had a somewhat comprehensive list of classical selections that are traditionally played at weddings. When I found this 3 CD set, I was very pleased. It contains 61 works from almost as many composers. This set might not contain the "best recording ever" of each of the selections, however it is very well done and the quality is very good. I used it primarily to choose the pieces that I wanted to have played by the church organist, and so the actual recordings were more for my consumption rather than for use in the ceremony/reception itself. However, I would not have hestitated to use the CD's in the wedding itself if needed. The book inside includes a list of suggested songs for various wedding styles (formal, outside, morning, etc.). From the classical neophyte to the seasoned classical music expert, this CD set will meet if not exceed expectations.
Just one note..........2003-06-07
I have not heard this album, so I cannot rate it as a whole. (The form made me include a rating, but disregard that.) However, I want to point out that track 36, the Pie Jesu from Gabriel Faure's Requiem is - well, from a requiem, a mass for the dead. The Pie Jesu is a lovely, gentle movement, and it has a beautiful and pure sound that does seem to fit the mood of a wedding. The Latin words, however, mean "Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them everlasting rest," where "them" refers to the dead.
Beautiful, but perhaps not so suitable for a wedding.

Customer Reviews:
When she sang...people would forget all that is conventional in opera.......2007-01-11
With Lorraine Hunt you can't go wrong. Her appeal is universal: those who don't fancy opera will love it because of her virtuoso capability, originality and sincerity. Laurent Naouri expressed the core of her appeal: "When she sang her character, people would forget all that is conventional in opera. People would forget even her singing; they would just feel something so deep and true." Bravo, Lorraine, you set a standard for all time.
absolutely Beautiful.......2007-01-10
She really left a wonderful gift in this cd. I wish I could have appreciated her voice before she died so as to have seen her in concert. What a voice she had!
A glorious voice to remember.......2006-10-29
If you love the voice of Janet Baker or Kathleen Ferrier, you will love this collection. Miss Hunt is the peer of any mezzo soprano I have ever heard, bar none. Her voice is pure and rich, her musicality is flawless, her total effect awe inspiring. If you have never heard Lorraine before, this is a great place to start. You won't be sorry!
An Ode to Beauty and Artistry (Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson, 1954-2006).......2006-07-06
I've been meaning to review this album for the longest time, but haven't because of my committments at work and other things. Lieberson's voice, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful instruments of our generation. It is, unlike a certain Renaaay who tries to sing anything and everything as a huge, incoherent slur, a very beautifully and artistically sung Handel recital. The tone is simply magnificent! And no other Handelian artist has connected her singing of the role with a dramatic sense that is so acute as her performances of the role.
It is really sad to know that this great artist died of breast cancer two days ago in her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was a big loss for the operatic world to lose such a beautiful instrument at such a young age. Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson will be missed.
subtle beauty.......2005-11-14
I have had this CD for several years now, and also all of the CDs from which these arias are drawn. What a great album; I would not be without it. Ms. Hunt (now Hunt Lieberson) has the voice, phrasing, discipline...the inner understanding of this music. She's "connected" on almost every piece here. 'Angels Bright and Fair' is a particular standout in my view; but almost certainly, if you are a lover of Handel's music, you will find something special here. Her soprano to mezzo soprano on this CD was a subtle and extraordinary voice for performing these pieces.

Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Pure & Beautiful.......2005-10-31
If you buy no other classical music, buy this collection. CD 1 (Relax) is perfect for dinner, quiet entertaining or just soft music while you're working. From "Come Away With Me", to "Whiter Shade of Pale" to "Knights in White Satin"... each piece is it's own movement - and moved you will be... Perfect for a romantic evening. CD2 is more robust, but equally entertaining. "Layla", "Livin On A Prayer", Stairway to Heaven", "Run to You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" - you owe it to yourself to hear these licks performed by the RPO.
Symphonic Rock.......2005-07-25
It really isn't rock, but it is a very pleasant presentation of popular music, rendered in creative ways by a full symphony orchestra. It sounds like the orchestra had a great time making these CD's.
pleasant easy listening.......2005-07-19
It's not extremely interesting music, but nice background, relaxing and pleasant with full orchestra. Not a bad buy at all!
Excellent CD.......2005-03-20
I received this as a present and at first I wasn't sure if I would like it because I don't like some of the original songs, but there's something about hearing the orchestra play that makes me like all of them. Just try it out.

Album Description
"the apocalypse's doomy, amp-destroying fifth horseman...galloping mammoth metal" - SPIN
"unbelievably heavy...massive crunching riffs and drums that slam like vault doors" - REVOLVER
Massive power trio HIGH ON FIRE are a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume. Equal parts molten metal and earthquake panic, HIGH ON FIRE's MOTORHEAD-meets-SLAYER roar is outrageously loud and absolutely punishing. With Blessed Black Wings, guitarist / vocalist Matt Pike (ex-SLEEP) unleashes a devastating combination of bombastic guitar and howling war cries, weaving fantastical tales of supernatural beasts, forgotten battles and rivers of blood over an unstoppable bass and drum assault. HIGH ON FIRE are a class unto themselves, manhandling rock music while locking into grooves that transcend time.
Customer Reviews:
Yo.......2007-05-15
This is a good jam! Buy it if you are into dirty metal bands such as His Hero is Gone!
The Stoned Riffs of Matt Pike-Brother In The Wind........2007-04-02
Matt Pike is defintely a Brother In The Wind. I love that tune. Self Defense was great, Surrounded By Thieves an instant classic, and Black Wings here has got to be one the greatest metal albums ever made. Stoner metal, rock, doom, whatever tag you wish to place on this, these songs will live on forever ... at least in my heart. I can't name one song on this that I don't think is killer beyond belief. Devilution will open the set and prepare you for what's to come. Brother In The Wind will send chills down your spine, and by the time you get to the monster sound on Sons of Thunder, you will be a believer. Hail High On Fire. Bring on the next one Matt!!!!!!!
HOF's best yet IMO!!.......2007-03-31
High on Fire is one of the best things to come along to the metal scene in a LONG time. Every HOF cd is worth it's weight in gold and this one is the best, buy it now!! Thank you Matt Pike, can't wait for what's next!!
Damn good stoner metal.......2007-03-26
It's probably High on Fire's most accessible album to date, mostly because it is their most up-tempo and it has the best production. Great songs, great tones, great band.
a cross between Motorhead and Slayer.......2006-12-16
High On Fire's vocalist Matt Pike sounds like a cross between Tom Araya of Slayer and Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead. as a matter of fact, their music sounds like a battle of the bands between Motorhead and Slayer. the DVD that is included with this album is a nice touch. on it, you get to see the band in action. I would love to see a new album from this band sometime soon.

This was a gift and the receipant loves it. Amazon responded to my order in above average time and I will continue to buy through their website.
Not for the serious flautist.......2006-06-10
Most of the tracks on this CD consist of saccharine fluff, such as Disney, show-tunes, etc. If I buy a flute recording, I want to hear some serious music, not this ghastly schmaltz. And I hate to say it, I'm not a huge fan of Galway's playing style. It's too light and airy, just on the edge of going into overtones. He overuses his vibrato, especially on the higher notes. When you want them to just smoothly soar with rich tone, they just sort of flutter about. He does have impeccable technique and speed, but his tone leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion. Seek out another artist!
The Very Best of James Galway.......2005-09-23
Really is one of the best of James Galway, if not the very best. Easy listening, soothing, relaxing - easy to enjoy
Lightweight.......2005-08-24
Admirers of James Galway as a superb classical flutist, of whom I am one, should be forewarned that this 2002 release has been packaged by the mass merchandisers for the "crossover" crowd and the mass market: there's slim pickin's here for serious music lovers. The first CD contains brief, lightweight classical "hits" in "arranged" versions, basically encore bonbons, while almost the entire second CD is devoted to ephemeral, forgettable pop fluff. There's not much of substance here; given Galway's vast (over 50 recordings) discography, the classical music lover would be well advised to look elsewhere.
