Only an artist of Jay-Z's stature could have survived the indignity of In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, his stunningly poor second LP, and remain standing as one of the premier lyricists of his generation. Like Biggie did on Life After Death, Jay-Z diversifies his style here--with the Timbaland-laced "Nigga What, Nigga Who" and the dialogue "Coming of Age" (which revisits the young hustler from Jay-Z's first LP, Reasonable Doubt)--demonstrating that even when experimenting with flow, he can still crush his peers. Though the album falters notably at the end (the lazy funk of "Paper Chase," "Reservoir Dogs," and "It's Like That" could be safely cut without incident), Shawn Carter has nonetheless reclaimed his mantle as rap's leading don. --Jon Caramanica

HOW COME HAVE WE LET THIS RAPPER GET FAMOUS ????.......2007-07-07
I bought this album in the last 1998, because I liked the Jermaine Dupri's song " Money ain't thang" (the last track of this album). In the same time I bought the excellent album of Jermaine Dupri "Life in 1472".
Just and only for this reason, I own this album of Jay-Z.
According to me, Jay-Z does well at Rap just and only in the collaborations with other rappers, that have him a guest in their albums, like Foxy Brown in "ILL NA NA " in the excellent track " I'll be" feATURING jAY-z OR LIKE NOTORIOUS B.I.G. in " Life after Deafh" in the nice track "I love the dough".
For the rest, Jay-z IS USEFUL FOR NOTHING !!!!!!!!!!!
So a question rises in spontaneous way : HOW COME HAS JAY-Z GOTTEN SO FAMOUS ?
PERHAPS THANKS TO PEOPLE LIKE ME, THAT BOUGHT A CD OF JAY-Z BY MISTAKE !!!!!!
WE have to support and let get famous talented rappers like Redman, Camp Lo, M.O.P., Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz, Onyx etc, and not, by mistake, rappers like Jay-Z.
If you want to buy a nice rap album, please check up my rap listmania, just clicking on my nickname and clicking above my listmania. Here there are 40 Hip-Hop albums choosed by me just for winning people and not for fans of the mortal masochism rap !!!
I assure that in my rap albums' list you will find the best American Hip-Hop albums. There are dance beats and strong ones and lyrics just for the winninf person in the life !!!
Hard life.......2006-12-05
Many people will diagree with me, but out of all the albums Jay has done this album is the hardest for me to listen to. Because he has to many people on this album. Jay does not need a person breathing on a album with him more or less having other people on the album. Yes, I know he was introducing Beans and others on this album. The Best Song is Hard Knock Life, and that's because he is on the record by himself. I have never liked this album as much as the rest because of all the people on the album. However, numbers do not lie, and many platinum sales later who care what I think, and opinions are like butt's everyone has one. But in my humble opinion the best parts of this album is whenever Jay spits other than that I skip the rest.
The beginning of Jay-Z Superstar!.......2006-09-22
Can I get a? was the first banger off this joint, then came the full leap to mainstream acceotance with Hard Knock Life(with it's Annie chorus). After this album Jay ruled hip hop. Even when DMX came along they co ruled but Jay was never knocked out of his #1 spot till Nas responded with ether in 2001. Anyways back to this review, Jay steps his game up from where he left off with "In my Lifetime vol 1". Most of the songs on here could have been sucessful singles such as Money Cash Hoes, Jigga What, Jigga Who, It's Alright, Money Aint A Thing and a couple more. The production was next level by Timbo and Swizz Beats.
one of jigga's best.......2006-07-29
i own this album and i like all the songs.
buy it! if you're a jay-z fan you won't be dissapointed

It's A Hard Knock Life For Us (4 stars).......2006-07-05
It seems like a lot of reviewers are idiots and just want to bash Jay-Z.
Jay-Z's third album Hard Knock life was a boost in his commercial sucess. More money, more cash, more hoes...and what not comming to him. Ironically, he decides to take a dive in the subject on the song "Money, Cash, Hoes". His second single "Hard Knock Life" was a rememberable song, because it was played on the radio. No problem with that, but it was stuck in my head. "N***a What?, N***a Who?" (or Jigga What? Jigga Who?) is a fast paced song featuring Jaz-O and Amil. I have the edited version of this CD, and for some reason they took out the entire hook to the song, so I'm just left with blank spots as the chorus and Amil comming in as the song fades out. One of my favorite tracks is "Reservoir Dogs" with The Lox, Beanie Sigel, and Sauce Money. Another favorite track is "It's Alright" with Memphis Bleek, rapping decent, but the beat makes the song more enjoyable.
There are a few skippable tracks though. "Comming Of Age (Da Sequel)" is okay, but I like the first one on the Reasonable Doubt album. "Ride Or Die" and "If I Should Die" both sounds dry and slapped together. "Paper Chase" isn't all that good because Foxy Brown spits some trashy rhymes in the beginning. The well known hit "Can I Get A..." from the Rush Hour OST. I have the radio edited version of this album, but I've also heard the explicit version to the song and it sounds trashy because of it's heavy vulgarity (mostly comming from Amil).
Those are the only flaws on this album. Other than that, if you love Jay-Z or mainstream 1998 rap music, I recommend this to you.

Hit for hit, rhyme for rhyme, DJ Clue Presents Backstage Mixtape integrates obscure underground tracks such as Cam'Ron's "Hate Music" with pipin' hot joints such as Mya and Jay Z's "Best of Me." Like on a legendary mixtape, Clue seamlessly blends song after song, providing a continuous flow of tunes. As well as the heavily rotated radio singles, "In the Club" by Beanie Sigel and "My Mind Right" by Memphis Bleek, Backstage celebrates lady lyricists on "Road Dawgs" which witnesses Amil, Eve, and Da Brat teaming up with Jay-Z over a bubbling bounce instrumental. Apart from the continuous signature Clue interjections and ad-libs, this album puts mainstream R&B and hip-hop tracks together just like a puzzle. --Elon D. Johnson

Decent Mixtape - 3.5 stars.......2004-11-11
This was put together during the time of the tour Jay-Z & The Roc went on w/ DMX, Ja Rule, Method Man & redman. It starts off strong and ends strong but is rather crappy in the middle. Features a wide range of well known rappers from the east and south and a few female rappers as well as 4 R&B songs (which I'm not a fan of). it definitely has it's highpoints & low points but there are some real good songs on here and if you likereal hip-hop but some R&B as well, you might wanna check it out.
#2 - 7 (Mya & Jay-Z)
#3 - 7.5 (Beanie Sigel)
#4 - 9.5 (Prodigy of Mobb Deep)
#5 - 10 (classic by memphis Bleek - gets on Nas)

Clue's screaming makes a weak soundtrack even weaker.......2003-09-29
DJ Clue - Backstage: Hard Knock Life Soundtrack (Roc-a-Fella, 2000)
On this album, listen to Cam'Ron and Julez Santana's "Hate Music". That song is wack and its title is the best description of that song and the whole album.
There ARE some good songs on here they're all ruined by DJ Clue's tired catch phrases like "New Ish!", "Exclusive!", and so on. As a result, it's hard to get into otherwise dope cuts like Prodigy's Alchemist-produced "Keep It Thoro" and OutKast, Killer Mike and Slimm Calhoun's "Funkenella". The same story goes for Memphis Bleek's "My Mind Right" where Bleek disses Nas: "'Your life's written'/Who are you supposed to be?/Play your position" (by the way, who is Bleek to diss anyone?).
Another great song is ruined by Clue's rants, called "Best of Me (remix)" by Mya featuring Jay-Z. While the beat supplied by Trackmasters is outdated, Jay-Z spits fire: "Saying you got a man/Okay, ma, AND??/That's high school, making me chasing you 'round for months/Have an affair, act like an adult for once." Also, if you're listening to a track where you don't know what the name is or who's performing, don't worry because Clue will tell you (for example, "New Beanie Sigel!" "'In the Club'!!").
I guess it doesn't matter that much because most of the tracks on here are average (especially the Lox track). But it would have been less disappointing if they included the second verse to Jay-Z's unreleased "People's Court". There's really no point to this album anyway because it's a soundtrack to a movie about a concert tour, so my advice is to skip it. -EJR
WHO DID YOU EXPECT?.......2002-04-05
people who know who DJ Clue is should have this in their possession,'cause this ain't something to miss out on.The c.d just as good as the movie.Tracks like "Keep It Thoro" (Prodigy),is tight especially since he went the whole song without a chorus.Capone&Noreaga put it down on "Don't Want Beef".The Lox's "Who Did You Expect" was one of the (if not the best)tightest songs on the c.d.Beanie Sigel's "In The Club" should've been a big-time radio hit.Just because it's called "In The Club" don't mean it had to stay in the club. "Millionaire" (Hot Boys and Big Tymers) was tight even with the fact that Turk was missing from the song.Fabolous' "Gotta Be Thug" is a tight and reconizable song (track 16 on GHETTO FABOLOUS).Memphis Bleek threw in his own skill a few times on here."My Mind Right" is a anywhere track. It's a track for cars,clubs,parties,house...anywhere you name."Crime Life" with Lil Cease and Ja Rule is somethin' made just for the streets. But don't be surprised if all anybody remembers is the Jiggaman himself.Yeah,I mean Jay-Z.Sure it was a lot of great songs on here, but when it all comes down to it,to some people, all it is,all it was,and all it will be about is Young Hova."People's Court","Best of Me (remix)" and "Road Dawgs" all have Jay on them so if someone you know has this don't be surprised if they push repeat for any of the songs.
DJ Clue without the "DJ".......2001-01-25
I have listened to R&B and hip hop for over 15years and this is possibly the poorest way I have heard the way word "DJ" be used. This album is track after track of mediocre songs with "DJ" Clue shouting useless shout-outs at the beginning of every track. A DJ is supposed to mix, blend tunes and think about how he/she will use the 74mins of music time - this guy clearly has little DJ skills and insists on giving hiself props on EVERY TRACK. This album pales into insignificance compared to say Fun Master Flex who IS a DJ. This album is very very disappointing unless if you like "DJ" Clue's other material. Listen properly to the album before you buy. Having said that, the T-Boz tune is very good, however, like all the other tracks, it is spoiled by Clue's aimless screams at the beginning. There will be people who like this album for the combination of big-star artists in that respect, it is good. But as for DJ Clue - not talented as a DJ and on the whole, quite disappointing.

Hard Knock Life.......2004-04-23
Hard Knock Life was the song back in 98/99 and it still bangs today. This song was as much street as it was commercial. The Hard Knock Life remix was wack. The beat sounded like some R&B rubbish and didn't appeal to me at all. Jay should have let someone like DJ Premier remix it for him. The Money Cash Hoes Remix I have to say though is great. Jay adds his new proteges Memphis Bleek and Beanie Sigel on this one. Beans even outshines Jigga himself on this one. The only downside is that DMX didn't have a verse. Now he's only on the hook. Overall this is pretty good if you're into buying singles. If not then just buy the Hard Knock Life album and download the Money, Cash, Hoes Remix. That Hard Knock Life Remix is a waste of time. Don't even download it.
Great song, bad remixes.......2002-04-29
"Hard Knock Life" was the bomb then in 1998, and it still is now. But the remix, with its R&B-ish music, sounds like a watered-down version that they would only play on easy listening stations during the daytime. And the only good thing about the "Money, Cash" remix (otherwise known as "More Money, More Cash, More...") is Memphis Bleek's line when he says, "No need to dress warm, I brought plenty of heat." Otherwise, this remix shouldn't have been made. DMX isn't even in this version.
Hard Knock life.......2001-03-08
This song rocks, get it if you don't have it.
GREAT SONG.......2000-06-11
This is an awesome song. If you like this you might like Jay-Z's cd, Volume 2...Hard Knock Life. I just wish this cd came with an unedited version so it wasn't so choppy. If you like this I also reccomend Dr. Dre, Eminem, Redman, Method Man, or Busta Rhymes. Overall I suggest you buy this because it is a really great song by one of tha best rappers out there.
HOT STUFF!.......2000-05-26
This CD is the bomb. I love the song Hard Knock Life and the remix. I also like the remix of Money,Cash,H**S. The original version of Money Cash... is much better, but the remix aims to please. I also reccomend the single of Missy Elliot's Hot Boyz.

Clue brings it once again--a flawless effort to go down in the halls of infamy (like all of Clue's stuf). He is a great producer and he knows hip-hop. This man has talent. Great tunes, rappin, singin, you name it--Clue's got it! And thank-you for an edited/clean version!
EXCELLENT!!!.......2000-09-10
CLUE IS EXTREMELY TALENTED, AS ARE ALL THE OTHER ARTISTS ON THE ALBUM. IT'S A GREAT CD. I'LL BE LOOKIN FOR THE PROFESSIONAL II.
....And Then There Was Hip-Hop.......2000-09-08
I must say this is one CD that has to be heard. It is true Hip-Hop. It seems as if everybody that is hot, is on this album. If you missed the Hard Knock Life tour, you must get this CD. Artist such as, Jay-Z, Big Tymers, Mya, T-Boz, Outkast, and The Lox(just to name a few), are featured on the album. This may be the party CD on the year. Every joint is banging. I must say that DJ Clue has done it again. THAT'S MY WORD "AMEAL"

Good beats needs to tackle better issues.......2000-05-30
There's no doubt that Jigga is one of the most talented rappers around. He's great ryhmer and the beats in all his music are great. He needs tackle better issues than sex, hoes, drugs and pimpin' you know what i mean. I know thats part of his style and he can make any subject sound good. He just needs to rap about something a little more meaningful. Otherwise, this album is great.
This Third album is betta than the second.......1999-11-05
Nothing was better than Reasonable Doubts, but I must admit Hard-Knock Life is a good album, although I couldn't feel "In my lifetime". Trust me this is not a waste of money.

Album Description
"The album took a year and a half to complete, but it was worth it," adds Walker. The beats are a diverse mix of hard-core rap, hip-hop, R&B, jazz and classic funk. Walker went out of his way to find professional musicians. "My goal is to give the West Coast a new sound, something they haven't heard before, but something that blends hard-core rap with the jazzy sophistication of a city like San Francisco. Our music will appeal to a wide audience. We've got a song for the hustlers (add song titles), a song for the ladies, for the thugs, and even for the pimps." But that's not all Elevation is about. "We encourage our listeners to elevate from their current situation through the music. Just because you came from the hard life doesn't mean you can't elevate to something better. That's what I've done and that's what we're encouraging other to do."- Jason Walker, Executive Producer, Elevation Records, Inc.
