Exciting, Peerless Prog-Jazz / Rock Performance.......2007-02-11
I own three copies of this album (so, obviously I think a lot of it): Two LPs (an original pressing and a later pressing) and the CD. Thelma Houston and a crack group of musicians/vocalists give you the experience of a live performance in your own listening room, courtesy of their direct-to-disk recording approach. I love the music, the obvious energy and the astonishing transparency of the vocals. For the audiophiles out there: As good as the CD is, the vinyl sounds that much better and is worth every penny if you have a top-notch LP system.
Love It.......2006-11-15
Years ago I dabbled in becomming a sterophile along with several of my friends on the fire department. One day we each brought in to work elements of our stereo systems. A couple of people brought in their "direct to disk" records that they had collected. This albumn was one of them. Don't Misunderstand is really smooth as are the other "sultry" songs on the albumn. The instrumentals are also great with one (and only one) being slightly less so as it has a more rag time type type feel to it. However, the I've got the music in me cut (and my favorite... the reprise last cut on the "B" side) are "fantastic." The windows in my old neighborhood are probably still vibrating from my playing these over and over at the loudest settings my system could play (without distortion). Additionally, it is rare to have a recording where you can hear a cymbal inadvertently crash and some murmuring between cuts. The musicianship of all concerned especially Ms. Houston (Whitney's Aunt, I believe)is a real treat especially in light of the modern "sampled" mass produced music of today. The origianl albumn of this, I believe was just short of $20.00 and that was in 25 years ago dollars. The "harder" faster tempoed music is great fun to listen to and the "sultry" mood music was "always" on in the background during dinner dates at stately Sims manner.
what cd format did for this album.......2005-12-03
I had a vinyl pressing back in the late 70's. Later on I checked a copy out of a library and made a tape from it. Then later with the avdent of computer and the approraite software made a cd of the tape. Which sounded better than other cd's I had brought. Which my wife took to work and it some how walked off. Well I finally found a copy on cd a gold one at that paid a little more for it. But was it ever worth it. It without any doubt sounded better than the tape or the cd I had made from the tape. If you going to be shopping for a stereo and you want a cd to test the rigg out with before you buy take this cd along. The silent parts are that silent. It is as though you sitting right in the middle of a front row seat. In a club. Without the club.what the other people with positive reviews say they hitting the nail on the head.
Doug Sax Does it AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-08-09
Anything Doug Sax Masters is incredible and every CD or record collection needs to have some Sheffield Recordings in it.
I also recommend Growing Up in a Hollywood Town and West of OZ as these and the Thelma Houston are a must in any collection. Not only for performance BUT these are demo Audiophile Recording on the highest level...These are the BIG 3
Nothing Short of Brilliant.......2005-05-14
This has been a favourite of mine for years - since I fist heard the vinyl direct disc recording in 1978. I was very pleased to be able to get a CD version, which is just as lively. This is fantastic music, brilliantly arranged and executed. Even for someone who doesn't dance, it's hard not to jump up to this. Some of it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up its so good.

Good electronic-music; second disc rules; a great D.I.V. starting place........2006-03-10
I purchased this two-disc set for 14 bucks at a used-music store, mainly because of the cover's eerie drawings, and I expected the music to match the look and feel of the cover-art. I was dead wrong, but that wasn't necessarily horrible. SATAN'S CIRCUS has a very happy feel to it, and one is hard-pressed to admit that he / her has never gotten the urge to jump up and perform the "robot" dance while listening to this album (it happens almost every time I listen to). I knock off a few points for having misleading cover-art, but it loses more points for being repetitive, unoriginal, and having annoying drums that don't come anywhere near complimenting the keyboards and exquisite sampling. Overall, SATAN'S CIRCUS' first disc is a huge disappointment from such a promising band like Death In Vegas.
All hope is not lost, however, because the second disc is a true gem. Not only do all the songs sound wonderful (which is becoming increasingly rare with most modern live-discs) and flow together effortlessly, but they sound subtly different then their album versions, and in some cases, they even surpass their album-counterparts. None of them are featured on the first SATAN'S CIRCUS disc, so you have no worries about overlapping tracks whatsoever (even if you own all of D.I.V.'s previous albums). I find myself listening to the live-disc more and more, and sadly, the first disc is acquiring quite a bit of dust as the days pass by.
The good (but not great) tracks on disc one that aren't too terrible are "Sons Of Rother," "Head," and "Heil Xanax" (the later being the only track on the first disc matching the gothic cover-art). As for the second disc, all the tracks are wonderful, except the overly-drawn-out intro "Leather." My personal faves are "Flying," "Help Yourself" (both bare a close resemblance to Bilinda Butcher's sensual voice), "Scorpio Rising" (which sounds startling different then the one off of its original album), and my favorite of either of the discs, "Hands Around My Throat". It's truly one of the best songs of all time. Emotional, tragic, sarcastic (at times), and brilliantly preformed, it is one of the best album-closers of all time (akin to Joy Division's "The Eternal" and NIN's "Ring-finger").
Bottom line is that, while this album is a treat to listen to, it's not very good. However, I do recommend it as a wonderful starting place for people interested in D.I.V. (mainly because of the live disc). It probably doesn't deserve it, but I'm going to grant it 4-stars simply because of the second-disc. Now I must leave, and please forgive my liberal use of parenthesis (I can't help it, I swear!).
CAUTION.......2006-03-07
As one previous reviewer pointed out: these two discs are vastly different in both texture and effect. I found this dual CD at Hastings for like 6 bucks, and by the end of the first disc I was totally ready to try and sell it to my buddy or another used shop for 3-5 bucks. But, when I put in the second disc to confirm the set was crap, I was suddenly suprisingly won over (perhaps to the point of eventually legitimizing the first disc). The texture changes drastically from long, minimal, uneventful, very mechanized feeling loops that just sit there (disc #1) to instrumental/atmospheric synth rock that really gets up and participates with the listener (disc #2). My interest in this group starts with my buddy trying to turn me on to them. This guy loves Kraftwerk, but loves dub style music even more. I fear he too will have mixed feelings about Satan's Circus (pun intended), because althought it is absolutly drenched with the influence of the droning loops of groups like Kraftwerk and even Front 242 or Nitzer Ebb, what it sorely lacks is the identity lent to those groups due to them having vocals, and my friend should be dissapointed to discover Death in Vegas being absent of Dub almost entirely (on both discs). Disc two is proof enough that vocals are not the only solution, but it's also proof that disc one's approach is consistently both sterile and almost painfully monotonous (I like industrial and I hate techno). I compose beats myself and I understand the ethics of droning loops, but I must say that I have completly failed to put this release into any context that can justify Death In Vegas resorting to such a dated sound--only breifly nostalgic or retro really, but mostly just dated and mundane. This is especially sad since the second disc goes so far as to prove what Crystal Method lack, which is an organic and beleivable flow to their hi-fi synth fuled rock anthems (CM depend on guests). I trully beleive that Death in Vegas had the chance to come out and crush all the post-techno dance duos trying to inch into live band territory (and out of the decaying American rave scene), but instead they emerged with a batting average just below the new Chemical Brothers CD and WAY below the new Prodigy CD. None the less, I am keeping it in hopes that it might grow on me.
Hypnotic . . ........2006-01-09
. . . mechanical, repetitive, kinda trippy -- the songs on SATAN'S CIRCUS (disc 1) are all slowly evolving instrumentals. To me, this is great chill out/coming down music. Great background music for working on the computer or whatever. Truthfully, I'm not sure why else you'd listen to it. It's not exactly rockin'. I wouldn't say it qualifies as party music (not for your average party at least). It's cool though.
On the other hand, the bonus live CD sounds much more like a rockin' good time. The audience definitely sound like they enjoyed themselves. Consisting of two guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, plus whatever main members Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes do, the live band changes up the original recordings enough to keep things interesting. This stuff is loaded with cool beats and bubbling electronics. Sometimes the atmosphere gets pretty heavy and intense, other times, it's gorgeous and serene. Although most people wouldn't call these guys musical geniuses or anything, what they do here is very cool and pretty tripped out. You can really groove on this one.
Both of these disks are very good in their own way at doing what they're intended to do, so for that I recommend this release. Most people seem to prefer their dubby debut DEAD ELVIS over everything else, but my fav Death In Vegas by far is still CONTINO SESSIONS - I recommend getting that one first if yer new to DIV.

YOJI RIPS IT UP AGAIN. WHO'S LAB-4?.......2002-04-18
Yoji has proven to be one of the best dj's out there. With this album he introduces the hard NRG producers, LAB-4. The album contains all tracks by LAB-4, but is dj'd by Yoji, probably for a big promo in Japan here. If Yoji dj's an album, it's garunteed to be solid. The only reason why I don't think this album is a 5 star, is because the last couple tracks are too fast and hard. LAB-4 has also been performing live sets in Japan, that turn the whole club up and down. Definitely a must have for anyone who is into intense club music.

velocity rocks !!.......2007-06-16
This is another great cd,these guys play some really good rock. And to
think these guys are'nt far from me here in northern cal.I just love the guitar playing in here, real good talent.buy this it's worth it !!
Fantastic unheard of melodic rock gem.......2001-07-19
I came across this band quite by accident while browsing the Internet in late 1997. The sound bytes on the band's web page sounded enticing, and I just had to hear more. Well, from the first time I threw this disk in my CD player, I was AMAZED. Where oh where has music like this gone? Certainly not onto the radio. In a nutshell, every track is solid to exceptional. "You Don't Amaze Me Anymore" is a fantastic rocking start to the album, and "Riot Goin On" keeps up the pace. The next track, "Supernatural Lover", is an amazing anthem, one of the best I had heard in a long time. "Janine" and "More Than Tonight" are gorgeous ballads, and "Love Is Dangerous is another anthemic highlight. Somewhere between Night Ranger and the early '90's also-obsure Hardline, with a touch of Mr. Big and other similar influences, this album is a fantastic addition to any lover of '80's hard rock music collection. You may not know these songs from the radio, but trust me--you won't be able to get the songs out of your head as much as any Def Leppard hit you heard in 1988. A true throwback to a time when rock music didn't take itself so seriously. Strongly recommended.
Rock is Alive!.......2001-06-16
These guys can Rock and they do it very well. Velocity is a great name for their CD because it's definitely high Impact! They take off with the amazing, You Don't Amaze Me Anymore! Riot Going On just rocks with great guitar work. Supernatural lover is a sweet power ballad. Julia Ann is fun and full speed rocker with a killer beat, hooks and awesome vocals from David Victor! Janine is a good rock song, although it has less impact than the other songs, more of a love song. She's Been Around pulls you in with sharp hooks. More Than Tonight is a power ballad with a lot of power. Love is Dangerous is a great high velocity rock song! One Night To Midnight has it all fast driving beat, catchy hooks, excellent guitar riffs! Open Road is an instrumental that keeps you in the fast lane. If you like Lover Boy, Night Ranger, and Scorpions you will enjoy this one!
Good Ol' Wild 80's Rock's Back.......2000-12-23
If you love early Loverboy/Bon Jovi albums or Night Ranger's Dawn Patrol, you will definitely like this album. This is not hit producing albums such as those of Journey or Boston but every track is perfectly produced and this can rival great 90s masterpiece such as Hardline's Double Eclipse.
You can say this album is 80s hard rock fan's paradise.
Velocity Has Some Real "Impact".......2000-06-02
This unknown surprise actually delivers some good old fashioned metal/rock that I thought to be pretty much dead since around 1990. David Victor's efforts on this debut from Velocity helped make this a worthwhile buy for me.
David Victor's lead vocals are good and his guitar work is solid. There's some hard at-ya stuff with You Don't Amaze Me Anymore, Love Is Dangerous and One Minute to Midnight. There's also some good melodic stuff with Janine, Julia Ann and my favorite track on the album, More Than Tonight. The rest of the tracks are pretty decent.
