Album Description

"The world is blessed … a major jazz singer." -SCOTT YANOW, LA JAZZ SCENE

"With a sense of timing Swiss watchmakers would envy, Adi Braun remains solid as ever with her latest set … people sometimes compare female jazz singers to Ella Fitzgerald, but Braun really is that good. Her sultry delivery'll get you a little hot." -NOW Toronto

"Thirteen tunes that show off the singer's big range and playfulness as well as her knack of getting to the heart of the song while making it all sound deceptively easy. Braun's technique is terrific, the phrasing's sophisticated, and she's at her best." -TORONTO STAR

"These ears had never heard her alluring voice before, but you can be sure that they'll never forget it ... she's a gifted artist delivering a knock-out set." -CABARET SCENE

Combining the nostalgia of yesteryear with the clarity of today, Adi Braun's sophisticated style and subtle delivery evokes such dramatic greats as Sarah Vaughan, Lotte Lenya, Judy Garland, and Rosemary Clooney. The Rules of the Game, Braun's latest recording, is a beautiful and playful exploration of the journey of love. Features songs by Canada's premier singer/songwriters, including Shirley Eikhard and Gordon Lightfoot, as well as new original songs. Brilliant musicianship on all levels, with an internationally renowned band that smokes on every track! Braun has a long list of cabaret, concert, and theater successes to her credit. With her critically acclaimed debut Delishious (Top Ten on jazz radio charts across Canada & short-listed for a 2004 Juno Nomination), Braun firmly established herself as one of Canada's brightest musical lights.

This singer is very slick and boring. She sings tragic lyrics in the most blythe sort of off hand way; I wonder if she even knows what these songs are about.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great album...definatly check it out!.......2002-06-17

This CD is definatly worth buying. You will be more then amazed by the beautiful yet powerful voice of Luciar. All in all the band is awsome!

    4 out of 5 stars excellent performer.......2001-09-25

i saw luciar perform her album in london, in september, and thoroughly enjoyed it. it was the first time ive seen a live act that i havent seen before- or heard of- and not felt let down for a single second. i recommend luciar to anyone who appreciates good music.

4 out of 5 stars The album for everyone!.......2000-09-28

I will say this straight out..This music is fresh & hip, not the "cookie-cutter radio style" music that many people have had stuffed through their ears. The music incorporates various styles, such as funk, jazz, reggae, pop, rock, and techno! The lyrics are catchy and well written, thanks to the bands vocalist, Luciar. This album has everything! Fine is a great strong track, you can FEEL the strength in her voice as she belts out the words, with some really "fine" guitar work by the band's guitarist, Matt Hogan. The title track is an upbeat dance extravaganza with some twisted techno beats and crazy. It comes at you slowly, pulls you, then refuses to let you go until it's over! Clear is a soft soulfull beautiful track. It reminds me of a sarah mclachlan song but it is so much more beautiful. This shows her vocal range very well i think.

If you want something fresh and new pick this album up, it will surprise and please you in every way. Do not forget to catch them live at NYC every month. they're always playing gigs on Bleeker Street!

4 out of 5 stars A range of moods and sounds with a promising future.......2000-06-19

For a first release, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the music and vocals. What impressed me the most was that over the course of 11 songs, I heard a wide variety and range of distinctly different sounds... not a bunch of cookie-cutter songs with the same sound dressed up with different lyrics.

Some tracks like "In and Out of Touch" and "Fine" demonstrate the edge and vocal quality heard in artists like Alanis Morissette, while "I Like It" has the almost haunting sound of Tori Amos about it. While these similarities in sound are present, the music is fresh, with a feeling all it's own. There's a softer and more soulful rock demonstrated in "So Peaceful" and "Clear", and a more playful and energetic sound in "Amuse Me" and "Rules of the Game".

What I'm trying to get at is that this is an album with something for everyone and I'm eager to hear more from Luciar.

None of that whack "smoke 'em shoot'em up" gangster wanna-be nonsense here. This compilation truly represents what Bay Area hip-hop is all about: relevant, intelligent rhymes delivered with style and intent. Did i mention the dope beats on every track? This one is definitely a listen straight through to the end again and again kinda album.
