Bill Evans, with virtuoso bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, reinvented the jazz piano trio, creating stunning contrapuntal dialogues that merged luminous lyricism with layers of complex, elusive harmonies, its moments of limpid beauty suddenly giving way to surging rhythms. The trio's finest recorded moments, these performances were captured just 10 days before LaFaro's death in a car accident. The original releases--Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby--are celebrated masterpieces. This three-CD set is a brilliant reissue--almost a revision--of that material, with superb sound from the newly remastered original tapes and all of the music presented in the sequence of the original five sets, adding a previously unissued take of "Gloria's Step," spoken introductions, and the band's incidental conversation. For those who know this music, it's a chance to hear it in a fresh way; for new listeners, it will come as a revelation at a bargain price. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars A piece of history.......2007-06-27

For your ears only.....some people think that Bill evans is a "nice musician" Like its musac in an elevator. Listen to "my foolish heart" with headphones on, eyes closed, cranked! Let yourself get inside the music...listen to the subtleness of his playing...let it take you on a journey. This song, I think, shows the essence of bill evans. Scott lafaro and evans together is a killer combo, unfortunately there is not much out there from their short collaberation. This makes this 3 disc set a must own!

5 out of 5 stars It's like being there.......2007-05-12

I was lucky enough to hear Bill Evans, Paul Motian and Scott LaFaro in person at the Vanguard. This recording is the next best thing to being there because you hear everything the recordng engineer heard. Being there was unforgettable. Evans is the Chopin of America, in my opinion, except Chopin didn't swing or (to my knowledge) improvise. This group of sidemen constituted Evans' best trio ever.

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection.......2007-05-10

This set was my first introduction to Bill Evans...and what an introduction. A marvelous album in so many ways. Even if you are not a jazz fanatic, this is one box set to own.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-14

Execellent, both as an introduction or if you've been listening to jazz for a while. Only gets better over time.

5 out of 5 stars What's All the Fuss About?.......2007-03-02

I came at this album kind of backwards - I first listened to CDs of Evans playing with Tony Bennett, then solo, then live at Montreux with Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette (trying to hear him at his most upbeat). I knew that this was one of the most revered albums in jazz, but I couldn't help but wonder what the fuss was all about. How much better could it be?

Much better. First, the recording quality on this album blows away the Montreux album. Yes, there's glasses clinking and occasional chit-chat, but it tells part of the story, as does the enemic applause. The bass tone is clear and full. The cymbals are not oppressive. It is amazing what such a meager recording setup can achieve in the right hands. If you have fear based on other bad jazz recordings, have no fear here.

Then there's the players. Bill Evans is Bill Evans - he has his good days and bad days, and most players people long in vain to live up to his bad days. And this was a good day, indeed. Then there's Scott LaFaro on bass. You really have to hear him play to appreciate just how much better than just about everyone else he was. He is busy yet tasteful, innovative and compelling to listen to. It would be a rare player indeed to come even close. Then there's Motian on drums. Based on other things I heard, I expected him to sit back, keep the beat and stay out of the way. He keeps the lid on the volume, but he plays with a control and intensity that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Unlike Jack DeJohnette, his timing syncs up precisely with Evans. His contribution to this trio should not be underestimated.

Then there are the songs. Each song is like an artichoke - dig a little deeper and you get a brand new flower. My favorites include Milestones with the upbeat drums and tasty chord voicings, the sweet playing on Alice and Wonderland, and the bass harmonics on Some Other Time, but there are so many good parts, and no weak ones. I'm sure my take will change over time as I become more familiar with the songs.

Finally, the context of the recording plays a big part in my overall impression. The small bits of applause add some irony to this recording - who knew that that this largely ignored day-in-the life of three underappreciated musicians would spawn albums, articles, and new jazz players for decades to come? The knowledge of LaFaro's impending death, his strained relationship with Evans, Evans' drug problems, Evan's profound grief at the death of LaFaro, and the fact that Evans is now gone all color my experience of this recording significantly. This album is a microcosm of the many tragedies and occasional triumphs in the strange and sometimes wonderful world of jazz. And a truly fine listening experience.

With the musical maturity of this sophomore release, Ollabelle extend their accomplishment of forging a singular style bridging folk and art songs from the talents of five singer-songwriters. While Amy Helm, daughter of the Band's Levon, boasts the highest-profile lineage, the two-woman, three-man band has the balance of a democratic collective, combining deep roots with soaring, sophisticated harmonies. "Troubles of the World," an elegiac reading of the traditional "Riverside," the call-and-response of "Gone Today," and the closing "Last Lullaby" reflect the spiritual underpinnings of the quintet's signature sound, but the stylistic range extends from the Caribbean lilt of the opening "See Line Woman" and the stately country waltz of "Heaven's Pearls" to the delta blues of "Fall Back" and the Celtic balladry of "Dream the Fall." Except for the lovesick "Blue Northern Lights" and the bittersweet delicacy of "Everything Is Broken," it's difficult to distinguish the band's arrangements of traditional material from the original songwriting that dominates. Larry Campbell, formerly of Bob Dylan's band, provides superb production and multi-instrumental support. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Just plain good music.......2006-12-16

"Riverside Battle Songs" has something for everyone. Their music has a harmony and resonance similar to that of classic partnerships such as Simon and Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Their influences range from Celtic to Cajun to Country--and their topics are timely and timeless--as in the war protest of "Riverside Battle Songs." The first CD was a delight--this follow-up has only fulfilled the initial promise.

5 out of 5 stars Just Getting Better.......2006-10-21

Each year, only a handful of new records really resonate deeply with me. Two years ago, one of those was Ollabelle's debut release. I'm happy to say that "Riverside Battle Songs" has now become one of those rarified records for '06. Everything about this band has improved as they have spent more time together: their songwriting, their harmonies, and their singing. This time around, Tony and Byron step up to the mic, and it's a welcome appearance. And Glenn's singing has become much stronger (he was good before) - in fact, on the closer he bears some resemblance to veteran New Orleans singer John Boutte, with whom he had worked in the past. And Amy and Fiona continue to strike a beautiful balance between sweetness and soul. Overall, this is a record that will bear years of listening... and I look forward to those years!

5 out of 5 stars It took long to release, but it was worth the wait.......2006-09-20

I discoved this eclectic band in '04 with their first CD and deeply enjoyed it. I also caught a live show in Detroit and was very pleased to find that they are not just a result of studio magic (though the production only both CD's is to be complimented).

And now, their follow-up release is better than the first. They write good songs, but they are at their best re-working standards like Riverside. There is something very cool about a band that spans more genres than it has members. I'm already looking forward to #3.

5 out of 5 stars Ollabelle and their Harmonies.......2006-09-15

I just discovered this group on XM Radio's The Bob Edwards Show. Does anyone hear a resemblance to Crosby, Stills and Nash with respect to some of the harmonies? Initially I struggled to figure out what I was reminded of in Ollabelle's style. The formal review posted on Amazon gave me the answer: Delaney and Bonnie. I have a vinyl recording of Motel Shots with Delaney and Bonnie along with Leon Russell that makes me want to compare the two bands. This is a Two Thumbs Up album that I will purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Sophomore Release!!!!.......2006-08-23

Ollabelle has done it again. I truly enjoyed their first record because of its honesty and respect for the past but this record takes the band to a whole different level. Although very eclectic in nature, this quality works for, and not against the record as a whole. So many well crafted tunes on this one. Everything from the subtle anti-war protest sentiments of "Riverside" and "Dream the Fall" to the heartbroken "Blue Northern Lights and Northern Star" resonate with a beauty and restraint that is rare in modern record making. I can't recommend this one enough. Very happy that real music is still alive.

Album Description

It is with no small amount of pride that Inside Out Music has the unique opportunity to announce its very first signing from a former communist country: Poland's Riverside. Behind the Iron Curtain, over the past years, and especially in Poland, progressive music has very quietly (but surely) been growing in popularity and establishing itself as a real scene. As a result, some very interesting and promising bands have begun to see the proverbial light-of-day. Enter Riverside, with their hyper-creative compositional and instrumental skills, they create very intense compact soundscapes that could remind one of Pink Floyd from the days-of-old. Their debut CD received rave reviews from the progressive rock community with many calling it "the album of the year." We expect no less from Second Life Syndrome.

2 out of 5 stars Not so much ..........2007-06-03

I was caught by the "customers who bought _____ also bought Riverside, and since I'm a big prog rock fan, I ordered it without hearing it. My mistake, the cd is average at best, and rather boring overall

5 out of 5 stars Riverside : "Second Life Syndrome".......2007-05-13

This blew me away. It's totally original, it's filled with real / true emotion, and is highly inspirational. Outside of the deep lyrical content, the guitar solos / arrangements are what really moved me. Whether you want to lable Riverside as a Metal band, or a Progressive band, one thing is certain, they compose their music from the heart. You can literally feel the music here, and because of it's pureness, it pulls you in....

I can't recommend "Second Life Syndrome" highly enough. Simply stated, Riverside is awesome, and "SLS" is a masterpiece that should not be overlooked. Buy it with confidence.....

4 out of 5 stars poland, way to go!.......2007-05-12

Riverside, what a band! The first cd was a work of art. This one doesn't disappoint but is a little weaker than the first masterpiece. The band doesn't change its sound but it doesn't deliver the same punch. Don't get me wrong! This creation is another great effort. I tip my hat to Riverside, and am hoping to get yet another great masterpiece in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars a classic..,.......2007-04-12

Stirring, moving and highly emotional arrangments all through this cd make it a classic piece of work. Mariusz Duda's voice captivates and pulls you into each song. I'm a big fan of "epic" long songs and Second Life Syndrome is one of coolest ones ever. Beautifully morphing from highs and lows and back again. Buy it for this song alone. Let's hope that this group stays together for a long time for they have so much to offer to prog music.

5 out of 5 stars Monumental progressive/metal/emo.......2007-03-03

This album is breath-taking. The economy of music is well distributed to serve the emotional landscape of the album. Really, this guys from Poland are on point. The singer really gets you into the ambient mood. Its just sound like good music to me.

5 out of 5 stars Skill And Emotion Collide.......2007-05-23

This album is truly one of the best debuts from a band that I have ever heard, if not thee best. If the debut album of 2003 for prog was The Mars Volta's De-Loused In The Comatorium then this is definatly the debut of 2004.

Riverside is a band in the truest sense of the word. Each insturment performs its part marvelously. Vocalist/Bassist Mariusz Duda who is truely an amazing force in this music and could give Geddy Lee a run for his money as best Singer/Bassist. His vocals are absolutly perfect for this kind of music, melancholic and full of emotion, adding to the shadowy mood that this music creates. The bass work here is amazingly creative and often a focal point in the quieter parts, helping to build tension to a louder part and even there it is still very noticable. Druming here is simply superb and also quite inventive. This inventivness is quite noticable during the two Reality Dream insturmentals. Nearly constant atmospheric keyboards create a richly colorful background for the other insturments to add to, which is best demonstrated on The Same River and The Curtain Falls. And finally we come to Piotr Grudzinski who plays guitar. Piotr has a very distinct sound, both during his solos and during his rhythm work. His solo tone is pretty much as good as solo tone gets.

The balance between insturments is amazing and provides for a moody and atmospheric experience beyond that of which most other bands can create, prog or otherwise. Riverside create the kind of music that you can put on during a drive at night or right before bed and feel at peace with the world and when this music is experienced outside of a dark enviroment, it dosn't really feel in the correct place.

    1. The Same River- A twelve minute epic that is highly reminiscent of Pink Floyd. The sample says it all. 5/5

    2. Out of Myself- A 3 minute song that is a little more intense than most of the album. Starts out with a cool bassline and some whispered vocals and then the keyboard comes in with some cool licks. 4/5

    3. I Believe- This begins with a group talking and a confused man contemplating over his situation. Once the actual song starts it is quite enchanting and beutiful. Duda's vocals create perfect harmony here and the keyboards are superb. This song is drumless, which is actually not a bad thing. 5/5

    4. Reality Dream I- An insturmental song with a harder edge than most of the other songs here. Guitar work here is quite heavy and slightly fierce, leaving way for the keyboards to create the melody. Even the insturmentals show many different parts and they never get old or stuck on one structure. Drum work here is quite good and of coarse the bass work is awsome. Watch this on YouTube along with Reality Dream II and Acronym Love(voices in my head)and if your not sold on this band you are crazy. 4.5/5

    5. Loose Heart- Another ballad that really stands out. The mood here is melancholy and toward the end, even angry, where Duda lets out several roars of frustration. Far from 'ruining the sound' as said by another reviewer, the harsh vocals add to the dynamics and mood. 5/5

    6. Reality Dream II- This insturmental is basically a montage of guitar solos , culminating in a furious jam. Keyboard work here is impressive and the high hat work on the drums is awsome. Duda again has awsome bass licks. 5/5

    7. In Two Minds- Another acoustic song similar to I Believe and almost as powerful, if not more so. Vocals here once again are perfect for the mood and the guitar solo is as well. 4.5/5

    8. The Curtain Falls- This awsome song starts out alot like a lullaby that we would hear from a music box and it continues the same peaceful road. the first part has awesome vocal work and the second part is an atmospheric insturmental that is perfect to get lost in. Perfect for bedtime or nightime driving. 5/5

    9. OK- An excellent way to end the album, musically and especially Lyrically. The Drummer uses some brush tip drums here for a bit of a jazzy sound and the guitar work is very dreamy. After the last chord sounds, a minute of silence follows and then one last tribal-like vocal note sounds , leaving room and transitioning into the second part of the trilogy, Second Life Syndrome.

Without a doubt, this is one of my favorate albums. Atmospheric, Emotional and Perfect.

    3 out of 5 stars Ruined Perfection!.......2007-05-17

More realisticly it would be closer to 4, let's call it 3 and a half.
I am an older guy (37), and my tastes are as diverse as one can get. The comparisons from other reviewers fit in some cases and miss the mark greatly in others.
To compare this singer to Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree is only slightly accurate. The soothing nature of most of his focals fit in many places. However, the growling and pointless screaming snuffs out many of the great moments in many of the songs.

Musically, this (and their next) are great records. The rhythm section is supurb, and the guitar work is quite nice (the instrumental pieces are quite interesting pieces of prog magic). The vocals over 90% of the record are fine, but the 10% that they choose to scream are enough to lower the rating. The screaming serves NO point to the message they wish to convey.

One can only hope that they realize that they have many fans that appreciate intelligent rock music and that they do not have to add the adolescent bellowing in order to be "cool". They just need to grow up a bit, perhaps.

3 out of 5 stars Not to bad, however it could have been better! .......2007-05-11

This cd is a very good prog cd. However I don't think it's as earth shattering as some have made it out to be. A really good prog cd that not to many people know about is Arena's "The Visitor". Now that is a truly outstanding listen!

I find Riverside to be lacking a little something with this release. I can't put my finger on it, but somethings missing? Yes they have their moments that at times that border on greatness, but it kind of jumps around a little to much for me. Some songs/ideas don't seem to fit or flow well enough together to be a really cohesive effort. At times this really disappointed me as it took away from the overall enjoyment of this fine cd. I like the general idea here, but I think it needs to be polished a wee bit more before we can call it great!

The mix is pretty good with all the instruments being heard and well defined. My only mix grip is the guitar can sound a bit thin at times and that should have been fixed up before this was released. His solo tone is awesome though!

All in all though, I would recommend this cd to friends as it is a good listen and it gets a 3.8 out of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Current Pinnacle of Prog.......2007-04-20

Ive been a Prog Rock fan ever since I can remember. I find myself digging out "Suernatural Fairy Tales" (the Rhino compilation on early prog) just to stay in touch with the base of the pyramid these guys are building on from time to time. These guys are the current capstone of the Genre for me. If you are a less unilateral thinker, you'd have to admit these guys are expanding the art on their part of the frontier and doing it with a classic link to their predecessors contributions. Now isn't that the intrigue of this whole genre... ...transition, segue, innovation, and intricate flow? These guys are masters in my book. Makes me wonder which of the predecessors they got their influence and inspiration from. "Second Life Syndrome" is equally intriguing and a great second contribution. It will be interesting to see where they take it from here. I hope this innovative little spring segues into a "river" of intricate flow.

5 out of 5 stars Riverside is making some of the best progressive music out now - my first 5 star review........2007-02-07

I regularly survey the progressive rock/metal scene hoping to find some decent new progressive talent. I have been appreciating prog since the seventies and even late sixties. In comparison to virtually all prog before it I can confidently state that Riverside is a phenomenon. There music is deliciously complex, crisp, intelligent, musically compelling and unexpected - the last of which is the best possible thing I could think to say of progressive music. The musicianship is top shelf. In a nod to Dream Theater, Riverside is clearly influenced by them but has one advantage - a decent vocalist. No, not decent, extraordinary - although decent would be enough to trump DT. Not only the lyrics, but the vocal melodies are well thought out and musically interesting. Riverside, with Out of Myself and Second Life Syndrome, is the band I have been waiting for since the mid eighties when When Dream and Day Unite came out.

For context, other contemporary prog artists I find to be quite good include, of course, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Green Carnation, Transatlantic, Spock's Beard (pre-Morse departure), Blackfield, and Siege's Even.

This is a masterpiece. If you love intense, complex, hauntingly beautiful progressive music then you can not dislike this work. I have never given a 5-star review before. This well deserves it. Congratulations Riverside, and keep the music coming!

While Producer Orrin Keepnews' Riverside label is best known for a few dominant artists like Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans, it was one of the most adventurous of the great New York independent labels of the 1950s and 1960s, often breaking with the small combo format. Tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath's tentet from 1960 is a superb example, a band combining big band drive with small group spontaneity. Armed with Heath's well-crafted, imaginative compositions, as well as Bobby Timmons' soul jazz anthem "Dat Dere" and the standard "On Green Dolphin Street," the band swings tremendously. There's a special family chemistry as well, with Heath joined by his brothers Percy on bass and Albert on drums, and altoist Cannonball Adderley and brother Nat sharing the solo space. The inspiration shows in Jimmy Heath's own playing, whether he's working through the complex harmonies of "Mona's Mood" or ricocheting off the rhythms of "Nails." --Stuart Broomer

The 2005 release of Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall brought fresh attention to a brilliant musical partnership, though one of the least recorded. While the Monk/Coltrane association lasted only a few months in 1957, it coincided with Monk's emergence as a major figure and with the first flowering of Coltrane's genius. This two-CD set collects all of their studio meetings, including previously unreleased takes. There's the surprise trio version of "Monk's Mood," which the pianist inserted in a solo album; the Monk's Music septet sessions pairing Coltrane with Coleman Hawkins (now including the errant "Blues for Tomorrow," a Gigi Gryce tune recorded when Monk fell asleep at the keyboard); and the three superb tracks that constituted the sole studio documentation of the great quartet. Coltrane manages a virtual piano part on "Trinkle Tinkle," suggesting just how musically close the two became. Producer Orrin Keepnews provides an illuminating essay on the circumstances surrounding this essential chapter in jazz history. --Stuart Broomer

        Album Description

Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane are universally recognized as musical demigods. The idea of Monk and Coltrane--the genius mentor and the budding genius--on the same bandstand or in the same recording studio is like Julius Erving and Michael Jordan soaring as teammates, or Jean Renoir and Francois Truffaut collaborating on a film. For an all-too-brief, magical time in 1957, Monk and Coltrane actually did work together every night as part of a quartet led by the uniquely brilliant pianist-composer Monk at New York's now-fabled Five Spot Cafe. And between April and July of that year they made the stunning music contained herein, their complete output in the recording studio.

The planets seemed to align for Thelonious Sphere Monk (1917-1982) and John William Coltrane (1926-1967) when they joined forces in '57. Coltrane was poised to make a giant leap forward--and ready to learn from one of the masters, Monk. In a Down Beat interview Coltrane said: "Working with Monk brought me close to a musical architect of the highest order. I learned from him in every way." Some of those answers involved the way in which Coltrane's harmonic acuity developed, expressed via early intimations of his torrential "sheets of sound." With Monk's chords guiding him to places he'd never before visited, Coltrane was now on the path to transcendence. When he is joined by Coleman Hawkins, jazz's father of the tenor saxophone, on a couple of numbers from the epochal septet album Monk's Music, one hears the tenor's past, present, and future (e.g., the master take of "Epistrophy"). And listen raptly to the respective approaches of Hawkins and Coltrane on the two versions of "Ruby, My Dear," one of three signature Monk ballads in this set (the others are "Monk's Mood" and the ever-evolving "Crepuscule with Nellie").

There is such greatness on these two discs, so many wondrous performances (the rhythm team of bassist Wilbur Ware and drummers Art Blakey or Shadow Wilson is especially inspired), and so many fascinating stories about how these masterpieces came into being. Orrin Keepnews, who as producer of the original sessions was present at the creation of every note, has written a superb essay that sets the record straight, clears up long-standing rumors about what did (and did not) go down in the studio, and, above all, lets the listener in on how a genius mentor, a budding genius, and their gifted colleagues went about the business of conceiving a work of art.

And their names were Monk, Coltrane, Blakey, and Hawkins. One blessed day in 1957 (or several, actually) they all got together in a studio, joined by a few lesser lights, and performed some of Monk's greatest compositions.

There's something electric about Monk and Blakey together. Add the tempestuous Coltrane to the mix and you have a keg of gunpowder. They make us realize how pat later performances of these compositions could sound. Particularly exciting is the first attempt at Epistrophy, with Blakey doing some wild drumming even for him. Unfortunately, because of a breakdown after Ray Copeland's trumpet solo, they had to do it again, and the second take sounds a bit more warmed over. There are still great moments, however, such as a powerful Coleman Hawkins tenor solo. The great Bean seems to be telling the youngersters "You are great, but I am still greater, after 30 years." And he was. The only player from his generation to really adapt to bebop, his reputation has faded a bit recently. He's not in the same parthenon as Parker, Coltrane, Davis, etc., but he should be, easily. His knowledge of the harmonic underpinnings of all these tunes is just astonishing, and his knotty solos demonstrate that he understood the function of every note in every chord in every tune. He is one of the most *thorough* musicians in jazz history.

While trumpeter Copeland and alto Gigi Gryce really don't fit in here (Gryce in particular is out of his element...I wonder why he was picked, and can only imagine how much better Sahib Shihab would have been) the rest of the cast is superb, with bassist Wilbur Ware and drummers Blakey and on some tracks Shadow Wilson lending inspired support. On Trinkle Tinkle and Nutty you can hear Trane experimenting with his "sheets of sound" technique, while in other, earlier tracks he is still heavily influenced by hard bop. In other words, you can hear his style change across the album. While there are too many Crepuscule With Nellies for my taste, the rest of the album is superb. Sound is extremely good (despite a few dropouts here and there) for the time, or even by today's standards. And producer Orrin Keepnews' liner notes are informative and make you feel like you are there. While some of the solos meander, and Copeland and Gryce are clearly trying to find their way (and occasionally getting lost, even on the tracks that got used) Trane and Monk and Blakey contribute first-class jazz. After you digest this terrific set, check out the recently-unearthed Monk and Trane at Carnegie Hall.

First I'd like to preface that I am not a musician or Jazz expert, but a Jazz enthusiast. I was a little leary about purchasing this CD because of the bad review and all the outtakes on the discography, but the price was right.

If you get this CD you'll be pleasantly surprised at the audio and musical quality of the songs and alternate takes. The little booklet inside was informative without being verbose.

        Highly recommended!

If you prefer the outtakes and the interviews on a movie DVD then you'll love this album. If you like to hear the best of the best then forget it. This album is of no real historic or musical value.

5 out of 5 stars Monk and Trane in the Studio: The Director's Cut! That is, The Producer's Cut!.......2006-06-28

With the recently-released Thelonious Monk & John Coltrane Carnegie Hall CD selling extraordinarily well, the next logical step was to create a companion set of their studio recordings. On cue, THE COMPLETE 1957 RIVERSIDE RECORDINGS steps into the marketplace. Basically this set is the audio equivalent of a "Director's Cut" video release, but in this case it's producer Orrin Keepnews' labor of love.

For some the contents of this set may be too much of a good thing, given the number of alternate takes (plus the inclusion of several cuts from the same sessions that are missing one of the two key musicians). Ten tunes are featured among the twenty tracks included on the two CDs. However, for most listeners the multiple takes will be welcome. Both Monk and Coltrane almost always find something unique to say in their solos, although the five takes of "Crepuscule With Nellie" arguably do get a bit repetitive. Even so, bottom-of-the-barrel Monk and Trane out-takes would be over-the-top-of-the-barrel for most other musicians. Furthermore, I was surprised to find that two tracks are released here for the first time. Not to mention the master takes, which belong in the front wing of any jazz hall-of-fame!

Monk and Coltrane's names may be the only ones on the front cover, but the other musicians are among jazz's all-time greats as well, including tenor sax legend Coleman Hawkins on one session. There's really nothing more I can write than to say that these recordings are historically important, and timeless in their ability to sound fresh and innovative even a half-century after they were recorded. It's hard to find any jazz recordings over the course of its entire history that are more crucial than these Monk and Coltrane sessions.

These jaded ears have heard a lotta jazz, & Jimmy is one of the great ones. A real treat to hear large ensemble reprises of numbers like BIG P, ONE FOR JUAN & PROJECT S. You gotta wait awhile to hear something new from Jimmy or the Heath Brothers, but it's always worth it. It's been awhile since I derived so much pleasure from a new recording; Highly recommended.
