On his sophomore CD, Jason Aldean, the Academy of Country Music's Top New Male Vocalist for 2006, continues to rely on a proven formula--recording several John Rich co-writes, and reprising producer Michael Knox--while pushing harder on the rocking side of his Georgia roots. A platinum-seller his first time out, he stocks the new album with songs from reliable hitmakers (Brett James, Jim Collins, Tom Shapiro) to score at radio (watch for his duet with Miranda Lambert, "Grown Woman"), but also isn't afraid to get edgy ("Back in This Cigarette," about an anguished breakup). A serviceable baritone, a hat act with pierced ears, Aldean relies on attitude when all else fails, and it works. "Johnny Cash," his rocking ode to rebellion and rebirth, is the fastest-rising single of his career. --Alanna Nash

4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2007-07-20

Jason Aldean has great music and this CD has some really good songs on it. I do think the music in his first CD was much better. A lot of the songs on the new CD are slow to me.

4 out of 5 stars Relenless.......2007-07-19

Great CD. A lot of emotional country and a few downright party songs. Relentless

5 out of 5 stars Jason Alean is the voice of country music.......2007-07-03

Relentless follows what is one of my favorite albums of all time, the self titled album Jason Aldean. He is original and listening to his music takes me out to any small town on the plains of Colorado. He really puncuates the lyrics with the music in a way to brings out the emotions of words.

4 out of 5 stars Solid.......2007-06-28

Jason Aldean is definitely one of the best young artists in country music. His second album is solid, but not better than his first. Of course, it's difficult to top the last CD.

There are a lot of really good tracks on the CD including "I Use What I Got", "Cigarette", and "Laughed Until We Cried."

The first single, "Johnny Cash" is okay... it's just too manufactured for radio... it's just not a natural song, which seems to be a theme with these songs. A lot are a product of the Nashville songwriting formula.

At times, the songs sound dangerously close to Rascal Flatts, which is bad. That's not something anyone should aspire to be.

All and all, it's a solid album and I like it. He makes it work, and his voice is awesome. I just wish he wasn't touring with Rascal Flatts so I could actually see the man in concert. Good thing he'll be around for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars great sophomore effort.......2007-06-07

very good disc... not quite as good as his first, but that would have been hard to top... this guy is a great talent, great voice, great guitar work ... my biggest dissappointment was the duet with Miranda Lambert, they could have used her amazing voice much more powerfully than they did ... but all said, this should get Jason another 2 or 3 huge hits, and a few awards ... if you liked his debut, you will like this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Mysterious Metaphors.......2007-01-19

"Over the sea and far away
She's waiting like an iceberg
Waiting to change
But she's cold inside
She wants to be like the water"

The beauty in KT Tunstall's voice gives me shivers in the first song. She weaves in mysterious metaphors that are enjoyable to unravel.

The world she paints make sense in regards to emotions hidden and experiences well lived. With telescopic precision, she unveils the heart of emotional conflicts.

"The fire fades away
Most of everyday
Is full of tired excuses
But it's to hard to say
I wish it were simple
But we give up easily
You're close enough to see that
You're the other side of the world to me"

The lyrics speak for themselves and KT's voice is a vehicle for perfection. The songs are playful, relaxing and you may wish you were in a coffee shop listening to the first two tracks. Then, "Black Horse" takes off with dangerous appeal. Coffee shop casual turns country and then she delves into sultry moods. The delicate "Silent Sea" is haunting in beauty.

With dramatic pacing changes and a variety of familiar musical comforts, the album shines in places and wanders in melancholy momentarily between energetic creativity. Other Side of the World and Silent Sea stand out as unique treasures with poetic appeal and seem to reflect KT's heart and bring out the rapturous elements in her voice.

If you enjoy thinking about the ocean, you may also
enjoy Evening Ocean's The Attraction.

4 out of 5 stars Dislike "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree"? The album is FAR better!.......2006-12-28

Here's the thing: the song "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" was the equivalent to fingernails on a chalkboard to me (it seemed another annoying 'gimmick' song [those 'ooh hoo's] that seem to go over so well on American radio) and it's the very reason I avoided this album for an entire year. In my opinion, that song just made her sound like yet another raspy voiced singer from any bar band that I could see down the block.

But here's where things turned suprising for me. I found numerous rave reviews for this album (one that dared Aimee Mann to write songs as good!) and these finally forced me to listen beyond the one (and, to me, one dimensional) song.

Wow, what a happy suprise!

Seriously, if all you've heard is the one big 'hit' in America then you're really missing out... and getting the completely WRONG idea about Tunstall--this is music that is far more complex, intriguiging and, well, just plain better than "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" would lead you to believe.

Get it.

In fact, get the CD/DVD version! The CD adds a great song and the DVD will make a couple of things apparent straight away: Tunstall is even better live, and the videos illustrate that in the UK she's marketed a bit more truthfully, as the lion's share of the videos are UK specific and are of the far more superior songs to her one American 'hit'.

5 out of 5 stars The DVD is worth the extra price.......2006-10-12

Before you read this, you may want to take a look at my (5 star) review of the "Eye to the Telescope" CD (the version without the DVD included).

This CD/DVD combo contains the "Eye to the Telescope" CD -- with a bonus track that's not on the regular CD -- PLUS a DVD of music videos and live performances of several of the songs from the CD. The bonus song (called "Immune") is excellent; and is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Most of the music videos are quite good (though I'll admit that the video for the hit song "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" wasn't quite as good as I had hoped it would be). But it's the live performances that really make this DVD worthwhile. As good as KT Tunstall is in the recording studio, she's even better on stage in front of a live audience. I've seen her a few times on TV and the Internet, and was very impressed with the quality of her work on stage. The live performances on this DVD are simply astounding. In fact, the live version of "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" on the DVD is far better than the studio version from the CD and the music video.

If you like KT Tunstall, then this CD/DVD combo set is definitely worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars I'm not big on "double-dipping" either, but yes, THIS is an exception..........2006-10-10

I agree with the prior reviewer, reissues of albums, less than a year after first release, I am not a fan of. HOWEVER, if done well, it's totally worth the coin and selling the earlier version used...if you'll find a store to take it in, that is, haha. This is one of those reissues done exceptionally well, and yes, I traded in the older US version.

To be honest, this is the way the album SHOULD have been released in the US in the first place!!! I mean, it did take a year for it to even GET released in the US, but as they say, timing is everything. The album itself is a masterpiece really, good gutsy spunky singer/songwriter pop/soul/rock. 12 cool songs, varying in tempo and mood, from all-out rockers to introspective, soulful, atmospheric ballads. The album is not at all overproduced either. The big US "hit", the short and tight "Black Horse And The Cherry Tree" is not the only good song here, unlike most artists, espesh 1-hit wonders. I'm not saying KT WILL be a 1-hit wonder in the US (she's not in the UK), but it could turn out that way, like Daniel Powter. I love the big catchy UK hit "Suddenly I See" (which should have clicked here too...it was a natural followup to "Black Horse"), opener "Other Side Of The World" is beautiful, the way KT breaks into falsetto on the chorus, but my fave would be the EXTREMELY catchy, jangly "Another Place To Fall"...whatta song!!! I call her sound "busker soul", and she reminds me of a few artists mixed together in her own individual way. Maybe Michelle Branch meets the late great Kirsty MacColl??? You figure her out. Keeps her music constantly interesting, and I'm looking forward to hearing KT evolve over time. I had the original US album, and didn't completely grasp her, and then I heard KT's fellow Scotswoman Sandi Thom, whom I liked as well, thinking she was better than KT. Then I saw this deluxe version, and hearing Sandi's record again, I'm thinking I could be wrong, as something was missing. Well, I was wrong, KT IS better, and this package sealed the deal. The music clicked more now and I had to see the visuals to see she is the real deal, and what's cooler is she's completely unpretentious and has no ego; I'd get on with KT very well I think, she seems really cool as a person, like I'd love to have a beer with her sometime. Oh yeah, the bonus track on this version, the acoustic, spare, Live At Gaia Music in London, performance of "Immune", another KT original not on the album, is a beautiful song, and like the rest of this album, and a fave singer/songwriter of mine, Shawn Mullins, just KT's voice and guitar can just draw you in. And to think, she was self-taught!!!!! Makes sense actually, as true originals can never BE taught and that way, they come up with their individual style and sound, if you know what I mean.

Anyhoo, the packaging on this deluxe packge is nice, I like the cover with the overlaying of shiny details on top of that cool silvery B+W pic of KT. The extra pics inside are cool, of KT busking and with her band. And the expanded booklet is nice, with the extra pics and sleeve artwork of her UK singles, full lyrics, etc. My only problem, and it's a tiny quibble...the side spine was printed upside down. I had to cut and tape it so it's right-side up, some people don't mind...it's a slight, but fixable, problem with me, what can I say???

Now, most important in this package is the DVD (without it, you basically have the original album, correct??), which is 41 minutes and change, a nice value, not too skimpy. It's cool to have all 5 videos from the album, including both US & UK clips of "Suddenly I See". I hope they don't redo "Other Side Of The World" for US play on VH1, as the UK clip is fine and has a cool concept along with the lovely song that it is. And, the 5 live performances are GREAT!!! Three of them at Washington, D.C.'s awesome 9:30 club, with her full band; I was there for another show whilst visiting my relatives for Thanksgiving one year, I love that place. The other two are even better, at one of my fave venues: NYC's tiny intimate Mercury Lounge, just KT on acoustic guitar and pedals, and her drummer boyfriend accompanying her. What's cool is she's creating all the sounds at that moment...guitar sounds and layers of vocals & effects using echo. You have to see it to know what I mean. And KT seems so normal, accessable, etc...aka not a "star", which is probably how she likes it, as do I. The only thing I wish the DVD had, in addition to all this goodness, is an interview with KT, an on-the-road profile or a documentary on the making of "Eye To The Telescope" as many of these types of DVD have, oh well...this DVD is good enough.

This package, you really GET what KT Tunstall is all about...she might go down as a "1-hit wonder" in America, but really, who the hell cares??? Better to be remembered as an ARTIST. I prefer artistry, not hits.

5 out of 5 stars KT.......2006-09-20

From her 1st Music Video in the USA. I knew this female and her way in the music was different and would somehow make a impact. When I seen her on TV preforming live, no track in the background, makes all the music in person; right there as she goes on. You know that's basically the read deal, and you can't really talk trash (could you do it?). You show me someone else that can really do that. Jessica Simpson? Ashlee? Britney Spears? Even females that play stuff, Michelle Branch and others have nothing on KT. You can even mention males too like Nick, or so. Whether they DO play something, or not, or have a band with them to perform. KT Tunstall is all in one! Like the Real Deal basically, lol.

I wanted to buy her CD, there was something about it that said "No, Don't buy it". I couldn't figure it out, Until now!! If you bought the 1st either have it as a back up, or sell it used. This would be the one to buy :) All the Vids, and some of her Live. If you never go to concerts, this is prefect for you to experience it.

5 out of 5 stars KT Tunstall can do no wrong.......2006-09-10

I own all of KT Tunstall's singles and this is by far my favorite one. Of course, this is mainly worth getting for the 3 b-sides. "Girl and the Ghost" is worth the price of admission as far as I'm concerned. A great mellow and haunting song from KT that would probably be out of place on her album, but excellent as a b-side. "Moment of Madness" isn't as strong but is definitely worth a listen. "Get Ur Freak On" may take a few listens to get into, but it has grown on me.

These import singles have a tendency to become out-of-print, so grab this one while you can. I also recommend the following singles to flesh out your KT Tunstall collection:

"Another Place To Fall"-contains a b-side of "Fake Plastic Trees" (yes, the Radiohead song).

"Under the Weather"-contains a live version of KT's cover of Bob Dylan's "Tangled Up In Blue."

"False Alarm" EP-contains the rare tracks "Heal Over," "Throw Me A Rope" and "Miniature Disasters."

Maryland's Danny Gatton was best known as a rockabilly cat, the man who put blistering guitar licks behind the likes of Robert Gordon, Billy Hancock and Delbert McClinton. Like his heroes Les Paul, Lenny Breau and Hank Garland, however, Gatton is both a country picker and a solid jazz man; he stole the show on a Blue Note jam session with Joshua Redman and Roy Hargrove on New York Stories in '92. Gatton kept both careers going at once; Cruisin' Deuces (1993) was a rockabilly outing, while his duet album with Philadelphia organist Joey DeFrancesco, "Relentless," is a straightahead jazz project. One pursuit reinforces the other; Gatton's jazz playing brings a harmonic sophistication to his rockabilly work, and his country experience gives his jazz solos a dramatic flair. --Geoffrey Himes

4 out of 5 stars Psychobilly Rocker Meets Jazz Organ Monster.......2007-02-23

It's on the second cut, "Broadway," that Danny Gatton realizes what he's gotten into on this date. When you're Danny Gatton, you're used to blowing everybody else away. But Joey DeFrancesco wasn't being blown away by anybody, at least not that day. He takes a supercharged solo, and when Gatton gets it back, you can hear him quoting "I'm Beginning To See The Light." Oh, yeah. No cruising on this date. And, happily enough, the two of them proceed to blast through a program of jazzy blues.

It is clear from listening to this that while Gatton had amazing chops, he really wasn't a jazz player. That didn't stop him from having a whale of a time with Joey D, however. You could make an argument that this is one of the best examples of Gatton's playing, if only because DeFrancesco was such a worthy running-mate. Listen to them laughing on "Blues On The Half Shell"--they're having a great time. And if the idea of rockabilly rubbing up against jazz sounds appealing, you'll have a great time, too.

4 out of 5 stars Realizations.......2006-11-02

Steve Grey hit the nail on the head. Gatton was putting forth a great effort... but his unschooled approach to music is rather glaring in contrast to DeFrancesco's musical prowess. But, It sounds like they were having a great time.

DeFrancesco is so articulate... heads and shoulders above the crowd. Gatton was an icon, to a degree, but when set side by side with a great all around groove doctor... the Gatton image doesn't shine as brightly, but exudes raw energy at a very high level. I personnally think it is raw energy... but a bit unpolished.

Now... I've seen Gatton many times. I'm from DC and a musician to boot. And I love Danny's style and miss him... and understand that when he came back from California after a brief period of session work... he too, recognized his technical limits.... that said; Gatton displays a straight up, off the cuff feel for the groove... Gatton was good, very good, but there were A LOT of musicians who also were and are more polished. This release demonstrates that Danny Gatton had limits. A quick listen to a lot of Gatton material will also reveal a repetitivness that cursory examinations might miss. I'm not faulting him... but laid open with DeFrancesco... those types of limitations are evident.

For a Joey DeFrancesco release... it's great. Joey is the B3 King and proves it! With Danny it still rocks and grooves and works. I still own it and enjoy the release very much.

5 out of 5 stars Just pure energy, style and licks to spare!.......2006-07-05

This is the second version of this CD I have owned I like it that much that I gave one away reluctantly to a pal in England. From the moment this album starts you know you are in for a ride, and what a ride it is. From the beauty of 'The Chess Players' to the sheer intensity of 'Gearheads' , this album just overwhelms the listener with an ever-changing palette of different sounds. Is it country? Is it Jazz, Is it Rockabilly?. This is the kind of music you can't put into a category....simple as that.
One reviewer likes Hank Garland...sure, but that is comparing apples to oranges..for a start, there is NO-ONE like Joey DeFrancesco around...and the sound that these two guys produce is totally unique....it's a pity Danny is no longer with us, another one of these collaborations would have surely been a milestone, if this isn't already.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2006-01-12

This is a fantastic set of music. You have to listen to it to believe it.

I was a sound tech for a number of years. I used to have this CD in my intermission rotation. No matter what genre of music the audience came to see, they were all blown away by the smokin' chops displayed by both musicians on this disc.

New Jersey native and California resident Trout is an established guitar star in Europe and he capitalizes on that fact on "Relentless," ripping through a live session of original material in front of an enthusiastic Amsterdam audience. Trout, as the title states, is a relentless guitarist with an aggressive and energetic style. On his seventh album he and his backing trio the Radicals deliver another solid, if admittedly sometimes less than sensational, exercise in well-played rocking blues, with the emphasis on rocking. Trout paid his blues dues working with John Lee Hooker, Canned Heat, and John Mayall but his hard and heavy sound is rooted in rock guitar showmanship. Fortunately he has the licks to keep it interesting, although when things get too frantic, such as on the overkill album closer "Mercy," it's difficult to discern the blues base of the music. Trout does slow down briefly, turning in the short acoustic tune "Lonely Tonight," but for the vast majority of the time the music is loud, lively, and barely blue. --Michael Point

    5 out of 5 stars RELENTLESS!!.......2007-07-14

Walter Trout is an amazing talent!! They don't come any better! His music defies categorization. You hear heavy metal, blues, rock, pop, early rock n' roll, soul, ballads, gospel, and even folk (one number in GO THE DISTANCE, his best CD). He has universal appeal. And, he is outstanding in all these diverse styles! I like all the songs on RELENTLESS, his second best title. This offering was recorded live in Amsterdam. Walter's outstanding voice is loud and clear, although the instruments are a little bit in the background: check out the samples. The great producer, Jim Gaines, is involved. Unlike when he first started, he has masterfully integrated heavy metal with most of his other styles. The selections I like the best are: I'M TIRED, THE LIFE I CHOSE, WORK NO MORE, and MY HEART IS TRUE. The other cuts I would rate as very good. This album is worth twice the price!

    5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Musician.......2006-06-17

I stumbled upon Walter Trout over a year ago and I count myself extremely lucky to have done so. Trout is, in my opinion, the single most talented rock/blues musician on the planet at this time - with Joe Bonamassa weighing in second place. If there is some musician more talented out there, I haven't discovered them and it certainly isn't for lack of trying. This is fine CD well worth purchasing - my favorite songs being: I'm Tired, Helpin' Hand and Collingswood. Being the versatile musician that he is, Trout is also well adapted to playing and singing slower tunes like `Jericho Road' and `Cry If You Want To' with great ability. Since discovering him, I have gone on to purchase just about everything he has put out - and love it all. My praise could go on and on. From listening to his music, I get the distinct impression that Trout is man who seen a great deal of life, tasted deeply of its joys and it's many pains and sorrows, has gained many battle scars and come out on the other side intact and wiser for the experiences. For example, (on this CD and his many others) when Trout plays the blues with such purpose, sensitivity and feeling ... that signifies to me that he's `been there' and intimately knows where of he sings. It's all there in his music. As with any CD you purchase, you may not like all of the songs produced within - but I believe you will adore most of these. As with all his CD's, this is very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guitar Work.......2005-12-01

This is the first Walter Trout item I have ever purchased and it is worth every dime. Excellent jam session caught live. Very good quality live recording. Blues/Rock at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Live Show from The Paradiso is a Scorcher!!.......2004-12-12

Walter Trout has spent his days walking the long path of hardship to find the road of success. He toured and worked under John Lee Hooker and Big Mama Thornton, then as the lead guitar/harmonica sideman with Canned Heat for 4 years. After his tenure in the mid-1980's with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Trout formed his current band in 1989 with bassist Jimmy Trapp. Walter Trout & The Radicals have released thirteen albums in Europe and ten in the United States since 1989, and have been aggressively touring to support each release. An overseas vote recently put him into the top ten guitarists of all time in Europe. The record is incinerating; Trout and company blaze through the tracks on the show with the ferocity of a wildfire. The new CD/DVD features the Radicals filmed live, performing a full album of new material and at The Paradiso, a gothic cathedral in Amsterdam, Holland. Trout's guitar has the ferocity of a blast-furnace, incinerating virtually every note on his vintage `73 Stratocaster which is now on its 14th fret job. Trout's contributions this year also include a track on Canned Heat's 2003 release "Friends In The Can," After performing a 5 year stint in Canned Heat as the lead guitar/harmonica player in the early 1980's. 5 out of 5 stars Recording at a "relentless" pace, it seemed.......2005-09-26

This release, surpassing preceding "Arizona Bay" and "Dangerous," would have to be my much loved relating to the collection of deceased comic, Bill Hicks. And that's saying a lot, you must know, for the reason that "Arizona Bay" is one of my unparalleled choices for a recording done by any humorist incorporated (e.g. George Carlin, Dave Chappelle, Lewis Black, etc., etc.), and having said that, this still gets me on every listen.
The man's perpendicular enthusiasm to his comedy is mind-boggling. His temperament throughout serves its purpose, letting the viewer - you, me, what have you - familiarize ourselves what Hicks meant to convey through words and expression, thought and philosophy; all the dice . . .

I hadn't even gotten into him `til late 2003, either, which troubles me still further to know the man has been dead for eleven years. I'm just thankful his releases ("Arizona Bay," "Dangerous," "Rant in E-Minor," and even "Love, Laughter and Truth") were able to be shown to the public, so all can get the idea of how his mind worked. His beliefs, many thought, were poorly devised, but that isn't true; he had right conviction and he defended that right to all who would listen and / or oppose. Sure, he had problem with fundamental Christianity, government, "pro-life" representatives, and even an issue with what was deemed as "objective" news reporting, but Bill Hicks was colorful in his attempt to communicate with his audience, and relentless when he came to dull-witted argumentation. He wasn't afraid to speak his mind, by any means, and that kind of sheer capacity for audacious comedy can be heard (and possibly praised) by many willing to listen.
More importantly, my favorite ensuing tracks on this recording were "Sex on Trial ," "Rockers Against Drugs Suck," "Great Times on Drugs," and "What Is Pornography?" all of which speak out to me in humorous methods, as well as profound merit, the whole time.

To be brief, I respect the man for combining such verbose humor with creative, theoretical opinion, and letting the audience into his soul with each recording. If you're looking for simple comedy without much conviction or meaning, this comedian is not for you; Bill Hicks was vastly clever, put exertion in his profession, and made plenty of simpletons not only laugh in excitement, but also think for themselves and marvel the experience there forth.

    5 out of 5 stars Relentlessly Twisted.......2003-06-11

So many comics have borrowed from Hicks. The man's skewed visions of the truth are nothing short of brilliant. Like the audience on this cd, sometimes you're with Hicks - and more often you're six seconds less quick on the uptake.
    A damned shame he's gone.

5 out of 5 stars A Comedian ahead of his time.......2003-02-24

I remember watching Bill Hicks when I was a kid and thinking, "That's what I want to do when I grow up" and now I'm a comic. His style, his pacing and his sheer irreverence of "the norm" just spoke to me. Unfortunately, he died much too young and almost undiscovered by most people. Bill's take on people and life in general are relevant even today. He was the Lenny Bruce of his day, but he wasn't Lenny Bruce. He was a brilliant social commentator with a unique attack on his craft. If you want to know more about him read "AMERICAN SCREAM" and listen to ALL of his albums. You'll be better for it.

5 out of 5 stars Hysterical and insightful........2002-11-19

Bil Hicks is a comedian who has joined the ranks (if posthumously) of Carlin, Bruce and Pryor. I was very much a Johnny-come-lately to his work, but having just discovered it at age 20, the appeal was instant.
On "Relentless," Bill Hicks attacks the guilty and self-righteous people who like to think of themselves as politically correct--especially those who disdain pornography, smoking and drugs to the most extreme extent--exposing them as the hypocrites they are.
This album was made ten years ago, but the material still is pertinent to our times, particularly since TV news is not only blown out of proportion, but is almost always depressing.
When I first heard this album, I laughed so hard, I nearly stopped breathing. But I also became enlightened.

5 out of 5 stars "Hey Kids! It's Beezlebozo the Clown!!" Hicks' Best Album.......2002-07-26

    "Who the hell is "Beezlebozo?"

You're just going to have to purchase Bill Hicks' "Relentless," to find out. In the short amount of time of hearing about this guy and purchasing one of his albums, (time is about three weeks), I have purchased all five of his albums. Or at least the ones I could find. Bill Hicks has grown on me a lot faster than most of the other comics I have listed to. It's just a shame that he went through life without getting the recognition and respect he deserved. How can a brilliant comic genious be so underrated?

"Relentless" is 100% Bill Hicks. Filled with anger and outrageous ideas and theories, Bill Hicks is able to make us laugh and think at the same time. He was a man who did not know any fear, and was not afraid to talk about stuff that other comics wouldn't even dare to think about. He doen't follow the traditonal formula, as in talking about love, marriage, and family. No, he talks about drugs, war, politics, and a whole bunch of other things.

This is by far the best Bill Hicks CD. I really enjoyed listening to every track. Bill will be missed, and it's up to us to make sure that more people know about him. Hicks was, and still is, a comic genius who knew how to entertain. A great commentator and observer, he was.

    We miss you Bill! R.I.P.

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-12-02

I must say that these guys sound more like Black Sabbath than Black Sabbath does! They've taken a genre started by Sabbath and run with it. The vocals are like what Ozzy might have done if he had of stayed on track with Sabbath in the seventies. The guitar playing is not quite as bluesy as Iommi, but is very heavy and still good nonetheless. This is a great representation of the Doom genre. The CD booklet has an incomprehensible ramble by Mr. Liebling, but I guess that fits with the whole concept. The photos are great too. I recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Deserves 10 stars!.......2005-11-24

This may be the best doom metal record of all time and one of the top 5 metal albums of all time. Just like Slayer Reign in Blood is the best in its genre and every metal fan should own it, this is the best in the doom genre. It is hard to believe that when most of the metal world were busy trying to look like women and shaking their @ss, metal this heavy was being created and very few people noticed.

    Product Description

A new one-act musical featuring the award winning performance of Shonn Wiley, David Epstein and Tim Byrnes. A nameless novelist arrives in New York intent on getting his first book published. As he recounts his daily misadventures in a series of letters to his girl back home, we see through his eyes the colorful eccentric, vibrant and wildly bizarre characters that make up his new life, and the tragic events that make up his old one. With music and lyrics by Timothy Huang, The View From Here "...plays like a fresh variation on 'Wonderful Town' propelled by stunning music and a tremendously appealing solo performance by Shonn Wiley. Timothy Huang's score boasts masterful plot- and character-driven songs and comedic set pieces... Some have a contemporary throb, but others have a haunting melodic quality that seems torn from the annals of the Great American Songbook, populated by such folks as George Gershwin and Harold Arlen..." - Ron Cohen, Backstage

5 out of 5 stars just amazing: a new musical with heart.......2006-07-12

"A view from here" is a must recording for anyone interested in the future of musical theatre. Not only does this CD introduce us a hot new composer (Timothy Huang) but also sets a new future for musical theatre, heavily rooted in those times when the "theatre" part was much more combined to "musical theatre" than nowadays. You've got all the elements here: a good and simple story, a full-dimensional character and a perfectly integrated score. A great CD!!

    5 out of 5 stars A NICE BONUS DISC.......2006-05-17

I believe only 20,000 of these limited editions were pressed. I happened on one shortly after its release in 1994 at a Blockbuster Music store and it's been one of my favorite CD's ever since. "Very" was of course a brilliant album, and "Relentless" is equally as brilliant. True, not many vocals are present - but it is lush, breathtaking music with a true electronic feel. I remember a sticker on the package when I bought it said "Contains 6 bonus tracks from the forthecoming dance album". It makes me wonder if this was a selection of new songs from a new album, that later fell through? "Very" was followed up by "Disco 2" in 1994 so maybe it took the place of "Relentless". Who knows. Either way, this is a collection of 6 amazing songs that I am so happy to have in my collection. I've put them in my ipod and I listen to them all the time with a renewed interest after its release 12 years ago!

    5 out of 5 stars Very telling..........2003-11-14

At some point during the Pet Shop Boys' career, they discovered that they had a small core of fans who would purchase anything, literally anything, they put out, and pay for the privilege of doing so. The double-album repackaging and sale of Actually bumped the sales of that album up; the American fan-base frenzy for getting hold of the special import versions of extended singles and repackaged foreign albums (the Japanese version of Behaviour, with its mini-disc addition, springs to mind) set in motion the idea that as a matter of course, the Pet Shop Boys would always reissue their albums in a special, limited edition format, with a few extra songs and a new packaging.

Very was, unfortunately, commercially and critically received as less than stellar. Despite many good songs, some of Tennant's most interesting lyrics, and basic Tennant/Lowe rhythms and crafting, the album did not succeed very well. Can You Forgive Her was perhaps the last major song of the Pet Shop Boys to chart in America with any strength. Ever thereafter, the Pet Shop Boys have had to rely on their fan-base rather than MTV or radio air time to sell their albums.

Very Relentless was the repackaged and reissued special edition of Very. Very had an interesting orange, Lego-style box (which are collector's items now); Very Relentless was a dual-CD issue in a soft-plastic case done with a similar style; the Very CD done in orange and blue, the Relentless CD done in purple and blue.

Please see my other review of Very for more information about that album, which I shall not repeat here.

Relentless consists of six songs. All of these are done in an extended, sample- and electronic-heavy style; none really have strong lyrics (some seem to consist of very few words, repeated seemingly endlessly -- a bad trend, in my opinion, in the production of extended singles). They all have an interesting sound, and each has a danceable beat, but the songs are themselves rather unremarkable, and serve almost as filler.

It almost seems as though each of these songs was generated from one single idea that was extended over the breadth of the music; they also seem to be almost like an inside joke to which we the listeners are not privy -- some of the samples come from Japanese audio clips, which, despite being spoken in English, are a bit garbled and difficult to distinguish with the overlay of music.

Nonetheless, for the true collector of Pet Shop Boys output, this is a necessary album. The music behind the dearth of lyrics is very good; often this music is used by radio stations (unattributed, of course) as backing for dance, merges, transitions, and advertising tracks. This accounts for the discrepancy between my rating and my recommendation -- I could not recommend to anyone who is not a Pet Shop Boys fanatic that the extra expense for this album is worth the extra music; however, it is important as a component for a true collector.

Disco lives! At least in the Pet Shop Boys work, which continues to be turned out in consistent and innovative ways.

    5 out of 5 stars A sublime 90's dance-pop album.......2003-09-27

"Very", PSB's album after their touching "Behaviour" CD, was, and still is, one of the most fantastic dance-pop albums available. There are no skippable tracks, and each song is devistatingly catchy, meaningful, touching, or driving, making it a highly dynamic compilation. Add this work in with the limited edition disk "Relentless" with six never-before heard dance tracks, and what emerges is exemplary. These tracks must be heard to be believed ( I'm sure they are in clubs somewhere), and this disk is the only way to hear them.

Both CDs are housed in a plastic bubble wrapped sleave that is every bit as unique as the group's musical content. Even if you already own the single disk version of "Very", you could have one disk for in the car and one disk for at home, and have a great (and rare) techno CD to boot. It was limited in production in 1993, and hasn't been remade since. A true PSBs collector's item and underappreciated masterpiece.
