4 out of 5 stars Another one of those "ya had to have been there" albums!.......2006-07-29

Though the movie from whence comes the music on the album is a classic in its own right, the soundtrack is more a time capsule of what we listened to and danced to in 1991. Most of the artists/groups found on the release have either moved on to bigger and better things (Ice-T, Gerald Levert, and multi-talented Queen Latifah), are still recording with lesser success (Johnny Gill with "New Edition" and Keith Sweat), or have faded into relative obscurity (Color Me Badd, Troop, Guy, and 2 Live Crew).

But, in their day, they ruled the airwaves.

Ironically, the song that is the most dated is the sole remake: "For the Love of Money/Living For the City (Medley)". While the two in their respective original forms are just as thrilling today as they were three decades ago, the "new jack swing" version found on the soundtrack pales in comparison, which bears evidence to the fact that some songs cannot be remade.

But, honestly, the album is a good companion to a great film and that's all that can be asked of it.

3 out of 5 stars H-U-S-T-L-E-R hustler. .......2006-05-08

This is a soundtrack I've had for years but really rarely play. The truth is it's pretty good all the way through, but only 3-4 tracks stand-out to me. Obviously the Ice-T "New Jack Hustler (Nino's Theme)" is awesome, and was kind of the unofficial theme of the movie. "I Wanna Sex You Up" by Color Me Badd may seem cheesy now, but was huge at the time, and I actually still like it. Then there's "For The Love Of Money/Living For The City" with that unmistakeable opening, a good track for the film and greed in general. The rest is a mix of R&B/Soul and light rap, all decent, but nothing too amazing. Overall I guess this serves as a good time-capsule for 1991 if nothing else, in the genres anyway. Well worth the 94 cents it's currently going for used.

5 out of 5 stars New Jack City is still going on?.......2006-03-21

New Jack City is one of the movies that really made me realize what was going on out there in the streets. Another reality is that these things are still going on today as I am typing this review. There will always be a Nino Brown with a fly girlfriend on his side. All of this is simply life period and what more can I say besides the movie is great. I look at all the people who are now older and doing their thing. We really don't see Wesly Snipes like we used to. Ice T is doing his thing with "Law & Order", Vanessa Williams has finished her work on the "Soul Food Series", Christopher Williams is missing in action for whatever reason, but he is still a nice looking man, Allen Payne was really good in "Blue Hill", Michael Michelle is doing her thing. The movie has really shined the light on life in America along with how neighborhoods do in fact change. There will always be the "Pookies" too. Great movie, outstanding cast and script.

5 out of 5 stars Still a slammin' soundtrack! .......2004-11-07

I still talk about this soundtrack album a good 13 years later. I've already worn out the original CD I bought in '91 and I'm trying to get another one. This one was loaded with funky new jack swing numbers like Christopher Williams,F.S. Effect, Guy (too funky), Color Me Badd's bass heavy track, underrated Danny Madden's Facts of Love, Ice-T's aggressive New Jack Hustler and others! The ballads are nice--Johnny Gill's ballad gives Keith Sweat's some stiff competition! 2 Live Crew's somber, message-driven In The Dust is a smart alternative to their sex-driven songs. And the surprise here was the Troop/Levert/Queen Latifah song For the Love Of Money, a strong mix of soulful R&B and the Queen's no-nonsense hip-hop style. This really was a hot song using the rap/R&B collaboration style that Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Ja Rule, Ashanti and a number of artists use today! Phenomenal soundtrack with some gritty, urban, hard hitting beats and rhythms!

4 out of 5 stars One Of The Better New Jack Era Soundtracks.......2003-09-17

In 1991, you make a soundtrack with names like Johnny Gill, Color Me Badd, Keith Sweat, Guy, Ice-T, and 2 Live Crew its going to attract mainstream audience's. Its a really good cross-section of Rap, house, and R&B styles (New Jack Swing Era) in keeping with the attitude of the flick. The album kicks off right with a visceral cry of urban-poor rage, Ice-T's "New Jack Hustler," (also a perceptive linkage between the United States' capitalist, materialist values and the drug-pushing, murder, and gang warfare that runs rampant in its inner cities), and the one album wonder's F.S. Effect convey the same type of energy with "Get It Together (Black Is A Force)." Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill provide two of the finest numbers on this collection; Gill's "I'm Still Waiting," is one of the more popular songs the one time New Edition member recorded, and Sweat's "(There You Go) Tellin' Me No Again," is one of the better New Jack Ballads of the early '90s. While Guy's "New Jack City," and Troop's cover of the O'Jays' "For The Love Of Money," titled "For the Love of Money/Living for the City," are the albums better New Jack Swing moments; Aaron Hall's vocals are in prime form, sounding dope. Uptown vocalist Christopher Williams contributes a well put together (vocally) song, "I'm Dreaming," and the soundtrack also contains Color Me Badd's huge mid-tempo hit "I Wanna Sex You Up." The disappointment in the rap area is "In The Dust," from 2 Live Crew, seems to be the soundtrack's throwaway, but the very underrated Danny Madden's "Facts Of Life," (heavily influenced by the ojays) derserved more attention, because he wasn't a Guy or Babyface clone. Essence, A Dutch group that sounds exactly/shockingly like The Cure, also contributes to the soundtrack with "Lyrics 2 the Rhythm."

5 out of 5 stars Interstellar travel in your headphones........2007-05-31

Well, Stargate SG.1 has finally ended after 10 seasons, and this soundtrack CD covers only the first two. I think there's room for a new CD or two, and hopefully the Stargate SG.1 people will get around to creating one.

Anyway, I've listened to this CD once so far and I was very impressed. The music really is enjoyable on its own, and I found myself listening to the Cold Lazerus music twice before I continued throught the rest of the CD.

Finally, don't think there isn't much music on this CD because of the small nunber of tracks. Many of these tracks are six to ten minutes long.

5 out of 5 stars Stargate Music Album.......2007-05-12

Great CD throughout. It's a shame the show is being cancelled after 10 years but this music helps to keep the memory on.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the 1st Music release.......2004-10-24

The best of Stargate SG-1 is infact a 9 track compilation of the 1st 2 seasons of the TV show. It's really not the best of Stargate. I rather enjoyed the 1st release namely called Music of Stargate SG-1 and the actual movie music-score. However I still enjoyed the music from several episodes of the 2nd season, most notable being the music suite of Hathor.

A fan of the TV show should be pleasantly surprised by the suites in this CD. It won't disapoint.

5 out of 5 stars one for the fans.......2004-05-07

This CD is really one for the fans. If you've not watched Stargate SG-1 before, then it will be very limited in its' appeal.
I personally enjoyed the CD, as I could relate the music back to the particular episodes in which they appeared. Some of the tracks are sweet and melodic, others are more ominious, so it doesn't come up short on variety.
The music sounds, for the most part, rather sythesised (which is why, if you are used to sprawling epic soundtracks from mainstram movies, I generally don't recommend this if you have never watched the show). Tracks are usually a mixture of synthesised sounds combined with more organic notes from traditional instruments, creating a very "sci fi" sound.
This is a great CD to work and study to as it provides great background music without being too intrusive.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2004-02-23

This is a great CD. Just listing to it makes me feel like I'm watching the show.

5 out of 5 stars An opera that deserves consideration by a major company.......2003-10-04

I became familiar with this recording of the "The Crucible" back in the 60's when it was available on the old CRI label. It was an exciting piece then and it remains one now. It has been a puzzle to me why such an opera has not been taken up and presented regularly by major companies. The music is appealing--and frequently more than that; the drama is potent and never fails to captivate; it offers wonderful opportunites to a cast of singing actors. So what's the problem?! Granted some of the liberties taken with the Arthur Miller text render certain moments dramatically unclear and the Gershwinesque strains that accompany the slave Tituba's character are certainly a mistake. Still, the work as a whole is an exciting one. Hightlights abound, with the whole of the last act being especially moving.

This is still the only recording available and, overall, it is excellent. The leads perfectly embody the roles of John and Elizabeth Proctor, while the balance of the cast, a few vocal duds notwithstanding, competently fill in the many character roles.

The CD sound is very good and far superior to my old vinyl disks.

If you've never heard "The Crucible," give this recording a chance. It is well worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars Soaring majesty!.......2001-12-19

This performance is a gem. Just the soaring majesty of Frances Bible is well worth the experience. What a sadly underrated artist. The final duet with Bible and Ludgin is a lesson in passionate, searing drama and full-out singing.

3 out of 5 stars a favorite opera with an old and inconsistent performance.......1999-03-23

I had the privilege of being part of a cast of this opera at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the late 70's, directed by the avuncular Herbert Wildeboor (since deceased). I've always loved the 7/8 hymn at the end of the first act. However, this performance is very uneven, including generally unfortunate singing by female leads, and bad acting (at least) by the person singing Reverend Parris. Reverend Hale and John Proctor are consistently good. And the orchestra parts, very demanding, are well handled. It astounds me that there is no new recording in all these years. I've since seen it done in Pittsburgh and know it's being done somewhere on the West Coast. While Mr. Ward's music is considered cliche by some, I prefer it much to, for example, Moore's Ballad of Baby Doe. Perhaps my affection for it is due to having the opportunity to perform it.

3 out of 5 stars Philip Glass CD.......2007-04-05

The service I received on this order was excellent. I was stunned at how quickly the package arrived.
The CD itself I don't much care for. That having been said, please understand I am not a big fan of New Age music. I bought the CD because a drum and bugle corps called Phantom Regiment is performing material from it in their field show this summer. I am very curious to see what the staff gleaned from this.

    5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2007-03-19

This is incidental music to a play, so it's all wordless [the voice of Linda Ronstadt being used as an instrument] and contained. It's Glass' take on a classic sci-fi score...his version of the original Star Trek theme. [that's why the electric keyboard sound...which is not "cheesy" but essential to the scale and mood of the piece] Sometimes dreamy, sometime frantic, it is full of invention and mood.
    Great for driving!!

5 out of 5 stars Know before you buy!.......2005-08-04

This is not typical Glass music, I do not believe. The emphasis of the opera as well as the music is to create an impression of the incredible and amazing, not so much to create a landscape and gaze at it, as Philip Glass music often does.

For someone who is new to Philip Glass' older works, this may be a gentle introduction. For more seasoned fans who do not know about the opera, you may want to do your homework first.

2 out of 5 stars Did not like it.......2005-03-12

As a huge fan of early Philip Glass, I was anticipating wonderful things when I bought this album.

It disappointed me greatly, though. The organic tone of the Farfisa organs was gone, replaced by a very cheesy plastic dull sounding FM synthesis keyboard sound.

And the compositions seemed to be rehashes of the earlier Glass idioms.

I ended up getting rid of this album, after trying a few more times to get into it.

And that's pretty sad (compare to my favorite Glass albums -- including "Music in 12 Parts", "Einstein on the Beach", "North Star", "Akhnaten", "Satyagraha", "Dance Pieces", "The Photographer")

    5 out of 5 stars 1000 Airplanes: A Spacy Opera.......2003-11-23

I wasn't sure what to think of this album after listening to it a couple of times. I found myself enamored with Track 10, however, a very fast, powerful, maddening tune, and felt the need to go back and re-evaluate the entire album. I found that the album is quick, very thematic, thought-provoking. In fact, I didn't know anything about the theme of the album, but as I listened, I felt I was on the brink of insanity. As it happens, a friend of mine mentioned that the opera is just that--about someone who is a bit whacked. This album is a top five of mine. It's a bit spacy, edgy, crazy. Linda Ronstadt's out-of-this-world vocals are awesome. If you like Philip Glass, you'll love this album!

5 out of 5 stars By Far the best recording of Candide.......2000-05-03

I've heard a number of recordings of this, Bernstein's often overlooked masterpiece, and I must say this recording has the finest performance.

3 out of 5 stars Great Appetizers but Patchy Sound Quality!.......2006-05-21

Philip Glass' music is probably very unlike what you are used to hearing if you are new to his style. For me when I first heard this album, it was like an assault on the senses and my first reaction was to cringe and I wanted to throw it out after just a few minutes. But then as I decided to give the album another chance - after all, I had spent quite a bit of cash on this 3-disc album - I realised that the music definitely grows on you.

It dawned upon me after a few listens that some of the material here is really very beautiful indeed. The tracks are also chosen by Philip himself as is explained in the liner notes that he penned as well. The tracks have been remastered too, except the problem is that the tracks are a combination of DDD and ADD mastering. As a result, the sound quality suffers from track to track, as all the "Einstein On the Beach" selections are ADD mastered while the rest are DDD and the difference is very noticeable: volume and sound quality levels dip considerably as the tracks change which is quite irritating.

Still, if you are interested in sampling Glass' work without having to buy the whole albums, this is probably the best place to start. I know that as a result of this appetizer, I am now interested in seeking out well remastered versions of "Solo Piano", "Einstein on the Beach" and "Glassworks." Music that defies description and is yet so addictive, let's hope they release a better remastered version of this and indeed the entire Glass catalog soon. I, for one, am waiting with baited breath...

5 out of 5 stars An excellent best of collection.......2004-07-27

I have to say that I prefer Glass' earlier, small ensemble works because of their striking originality, both in composition and instrumentation. The pieces on this CD are for the most part examples of his later much more ambitious, yet timbrally conventional orchestral works. There are tantalizing bits of earlier work such as Dance No. 5 but in general too much weight has been put on the later, larger operas and there isn't enough of his earlier ensemble work. However, the music contained herein is universally excellent and serves as a good sampler for those who don't want to buy all of Akhnaten, Satyagraha and Einstein on the Beach and who want a good, if flawed, overview of Phillip Glass' career.

That said, Glassworks is still a very good "best of" package and well worth having for the more frugal or casual Phillip Glass fan or for those unfamiliar with his work. If you can only own one Phillip Glass album this would be the one to get. I'm going to give it 5 stars just because of its beauty.

      4 out of 5 stars A Fine Collection.......2002-01-17

I was so relieved when this 3-disc set was released, because, while I like Glass's music generally, complete operas are out of my already overextended budget. At last I could hear highlights from the operas and other Glassworks without breaking the bank.

I don't fully understand the arrangement of pieces on the discs, which mixes and matches works indiscriminately (it seems), and the two songs from the "Liquid Days" disc are recorded at a much higher volume level from the rest of the material, so I frequently program them out to avoid the annoyance. But all in all, I'm glad I got "Glass Masters".

4 out of 5 stars A great selection of Glass' Music.......2000-11-05

As anyone who has listened to Glass before knows, his music is not the easiest to listen to, but it is also wonderful once you get used to it. This is probably the best selection that you will get from his compositions without having to buy each of the operas separately. If you enjoy Philip Glass (but don't want to spend hundreds on the full operas) or are just interested in hearing his music, this is definitely the place to start. An incredible compilation!
