Few bands of the 1960s retained as much a sense of the roots of rock and roll as did Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their music is rife with country, rockabilly, and R&B influences, a combination that produced several hit singles--most of which are present on this collection. These include "I Heard It through the Grapevine," "Lodi," "Up Around the B ," "Who'll Stop the Rain," and of course "Bad Moon Rising." This is an excellent greatest-hits collection, and a perfect introduction to the music of a band that has been enduringly influential. --Genevieve Williams

My sort of music .......2007-07-12
As Im in my sixties you might think Im to old, but this is my sort of music.I reckon " john fogerty " is a great singer. Just listen to find out. Hope you like it the same as I do.
CCR.......2007-06-28
An excellent greatist hits CD, I used a handful of songs to burn a CD with other related style of music.
great stuff.......2007-06-27
listening to this CD makes you realize how great john fogerty was back in the day. great songs, great sound.
Gets me going in the morning.......2007-06-27
I've been listening to this CD for 2 weeks in my car on the way to work.
Soundtrack of an era.......2007-06-15
This is an excellent compilation of CCR's tunes from the late 60s, early 70s. There's a reason why Credence tunes kept popping up in movies and commercials. It's great music and evocative of the era from which it comes. No need for me to review the individual tunes; anybody with a radio has head most of them. A must-have for any music fan.

It's one of the cruel ironies of music today that Billy Joel has been relegated to a kind of adult-contemporary hell, where his legacy is measured by soft-rock staples such as "Just the Way You Are," "Piano Man," and "New York State of Mind." To be sure, well-crafted ballads are a part of his legacy, but they're hardly the whole story, as this collection of his early and mid-period hits amply demonstrates. From the unbridled biographical boasting of "The Entertainer" and the ambitious storytelling of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" to the careening abandon of "Only the Good Die Young" and the thoughtful social commentary of "Allentown," Joel was as complete an artist as the last three decades have produced. --Daniel Durchholz

Billy Joel - A Decent Compilation.......2007-06-11
These days Billy Joel is often lumped in with Elton John as being remembered only for his top 40 radio hits and mushy ballads from the past several decades. Many people forget that like Elton, Joel put out some really strong albums in his early and mid-career. The guy was a songwriter's songwriter and not only could play a hell of a piano, but could be a very clever lyricist as well. Like Elton, Joel's output could be very inconsistent. For every "Goodnight Saigon" or "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" he wrote more throwaway stuff like "Uptown Girl" or "Tell Her About It". This two disc compilation captures all of his singles and some of his album tracks up to 1985. For the most part the material here is good, as you hear him move from an album oriented artist to a more commercial singles oriented one over the course of a little over a decade. The first disc is the best and starts out with some of the best cuts from his pre-superstar days. "Piano Man", "Captain Jack", "The Entertainer", and "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" are all great tracks and show a much different side of Joel than much of his later output. "The Stranger" is also included here. Although I was never crazy about the music or the chorus to this one, the lyrics are some of Joel's all time best. The rest of disc one starts dipping into Joel's big hit territory with the mush ballads "Just The Way You Are", and "She's Always A Woman" (written for his 1st wife who he would divorce not too many years later). The big hits "Only The Good Die Young" and "Moving Out" are also included. Disc two is not quite as strong. Three strong songs open the disc "My Life", "Big Shot" and "You May Be Right" all decent songs that got played to death on radio. Then it is back to mediocrity land with "It's Still Rock n Roll To Me" (I always think of the Weird Al Yankovic parody "It's Still Billy Joel To Me"), "Don't Ask Me Why", and "She's Got A Way". The best part of this disc is the three tracks from what is in my opinion Joel's strongest album "The Nylon Curtain". For this one Joel took a serious turn and came up with some really great songs. The 3 singles from the album are all represented here and they are all good ones. "Allentown" is a portrait of the Pennsylvania steel town after the industry pretty much pulled out. "Pressure" is another good one about the pressure of modern day life. "Goodnight Saigon" may be Joel's best all time work, and is a striking portrait of the Vietnam War. The last half of the CD covers Joel's Do Wop period with "Uptown Girl", "The Longest Time", and "Tell Her About It" (songs about his second wife whom he would eventually divorce). I am not much of a Do Wop fan so these don't do a lot for me. Two new (at the time) songs close the disc out and are pretty much both throw aways in my opinion. In the end this is a nice compilation of early Joel material. If you are looking for an overview this would be a good pick up.
Greatest Hits.......2007-05-11
Many "Greatest Hits..." albums and sets are lacking or down right suck. This set is great. The songs you want to hear the way you expect to hear them.
WARNING: Not the Complete Versions.......2007-03-31
I don't often get "greatest hits" collections, preferring instead to buy original albums, but in this case I did, because there are a handful of Billy Joel songs I wanted in my collection, but I didn't want to invest enough to purchase all of his albums. Unfortunately, they don't tell you that what you get here, at least in some instances, are the "single" versions of these songs, not the full-length versions from the original albums. Case in point: One of my favorite Billy Joel songs is "Just the Way You Are," but the version on this set cuts an entire verse. I haven't done comparisons on all of the other songs, but if they'd pull that on this song, they probably did so on others as well. It's incomprehensible to me; if someone wants Billy Joel songs, the odds are that they want the complete songs, not truncated re-edits.
I love it.......2007-01-11
I was familiar with a few of Billy Joel's songs, but I thought my disc collection would not be complete if I did not own a good sample of his material.
This product proposes a chronological approach and that suited me just fine. The two discs are loaded with all the classics. All of them wonderfully digitalized. I was able to appreciate the enormous range of Billy Joel. Great songwriter, great singer, great piano player. Although I am drummer, I do understand why people like him, or Sting, or Stevie Wonder, or Elton John, are on top of the music industry food chain. It is truly difficult to be able to master so many areas of music. And I am not talking about the performing, the band leading chores, the musical direction, production, publicity, all these extra skills to own in order to arrive where they are.
Getting one hit out is already a rare feat, but 35 or 40 like the ones presented in this compilation, require a truly great mind (something many one hit wonders wish to have).
I love this compilation. A great buy!

As a survey of Toby Keith's first four recordings (not including the seasonal Christmas to Christmas), this set turns in some strong singles, making the case for the Okie singer-songwriter as one of the more traditionally minded of the '90s hat acts. Keith rarely devastates as a singer, but he never overreaches, and there's more than a bit of grit in his delivery of "Should've Been a Cowboy" and "He Ain't Worth Missing." His emotional triumph remains the obsessive "Who's That Man," in which Keith sees another man living the life he threw away. Keith also includes two songs not available elsewhere, complementing an appealing mainstream country set. --Roy Kasten

it's a TOBY KEITH greatest hits; no reason but that to buy it; we love Toby
It made me a fan.......2006-08-08
I puchased this Toby Keith album because I was given tickets to see him in concert and didn't know even one of his songs. I became a fan of Toby's soon after listening to this CD. Although he talks through a lot of "Getcha Some", it's become of my favorites out of the fourteen tracks. "You Ain't Much Fun" is an awesome song, even if the message isn't very considerate. This album is a great collection of country!
Awesome.......2006-07-14
I not a HUGE country fan but I like some of it. Toby Keith's greatest hits volume one is AWESOME!!! There isn't one song on the cd that I don't love to listen to over and over again! My autistic son who hates almost ALL music LOVES #10 LOL. We put it on repeat in the car!!!
This one is actually worth owning!.......2006-05-28
WOW...more than ONE song on here makes it worth owning!!! I sooo wish Toby would go back to this type of music. The last couple years his music has gone downhill BIG time!
Toby at his best.......2006-03-14
This is just a small sample of what he is capable of. There are a lot of great hits on this including "Dream Walkin" and "Should have been a cowboy". My favorite is "A little less talk and a lot more action". Definitely put this in your collection. It's worth it.

Album Description
First installment of the track-suited inventors of nu-metal's greatest hits. It draws on their back catalogue, from the1994 self titled debut; right through to 2003's 'Take A Look In The Mirror'. 'Greatest Hits Vol.1' displays the originsof the downtuned early 90's metal sound that went on to influence countless acts. It also includes covers of material by Pink Floyd and Cameo.
Customer Reviews:
Finally gave in...and I do like it!.......2007-07-14
Korn is not a band I have any other music from, but I did like many of thier "hits" or songs on the radio back in the day (which is as it turns out, not so long ago). Something about the hip-hop hard rock sound, and that whatever you call it...clicking bass sound just got to me eventually, and I found myself cranking their songs.
I am into bands like Corrosion Of Conformity, Helmet, Biohazard, Prong; plus I love the rap/rock that surfaced in the late 80's and seemed to flourish in the early 90's, from the aforementioned Biohazard, and Rage Against The Machine; and Korn seemed to draw some from those types of bands and blend it all together and it worked for the most part. Probably the worst thing that happened was getting that stupid "nu metal" tag, I hate that just about as much as the "hair metal" tag. C'mon, ya know?...it's just hard rock music that has a certain sound or feel, why does it have to have a label on it all the time? Perhaps it's not Metal, but it deserves a better name than Nu Metal, that was just being lazy.
Anyway, most of the songs on here I like. I can't help but repeat the "Ya'll Want A Single" chorus over and over, and of course all the hits that follow are very convenient for a casual fan like myself of the band and just wants to enjoy thier fine music.
It's finally over for these guys! 0/5 stars.......2007-06-12
This mallcore mediocre imitation metal band finally released a greatist hit's album Oh yeah I knew these guys were not gonna stick around for long. They were the worst talentless band I ever heard and a massive disgrace to real metal bands like iron maiden helloween slayer white zombie pantera judas priest motorhead. All their songs are garbage and all their music playing and vocals were completely horrible and unrelying they all smack a rush job on every song. I'm no expert in metal but I know there is no way korn can be called metal and there are lot's of other bands (including nu metal) that are alot better than korn. Korn is just an obnoxious fad like limp bizkit which now and days is completely forgotten by exfans like me. And thanks to head who found jesus and left... korn is finally dead that is a miracle no bands in their right mind would do that and im the exfan who found my true taste in music and left korn also.
Just okay.......2007-06-02
Korn has had their occasional hit here and there. While this is probably the best Korn has to offer, it's just okay music (in my opinion, of course). The cover of "Word Up" is nothing short of genius, but I wasn't impressed with Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall". Floyd is one of those bands that are too sacred to turn into nu metal.
Loved it.......2007-05-29

This is Hank Jr. in his late-'70s/early-'80s version, that brief moment after he'd discovered a sound and persona that wasn't just inherited but before he devolved into a good-old-boy caricature. Not that Bocephus isn't engaging in some posturing here already--the preposterous "Texas Women," for example, could stand unaltered as a Saturday Night Live parody of redneck lechery. More often, though, the 10 hit singles on this disc combine a low-key brand of Southern rock boogie with plenty of twang to fashion a wholly distinctive take on country tradition. Williams's work here is always indelible, and though he likes to drop his daddy's name a bit too often, it's hard to argue with introspective numbers like "All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)" and "Family Tradition," which each offer a unique and timeless take on the honky-tonk blues. --David Cantwell

As good or better than his father........2007-01-23
This album should be considered a classic for collectors for a long time to come. Well worth the amount paid for it.
Country of today is pure Pop!.......2006-01-28
This is great. Generally, Country Music is weak. Tim McGraw, Brooks and Dunn, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, and Randy Travis all create simple music for simple people. That is a fact.
But Hank serves up the real deal. Buy this and play it loud. Maybe you can drown out phonys of country. Better yet! Blast it in your F150's, while you run over the Nashville's corporate pretty boys.
Now This Is Real Rebel Country.......2005-02-19
Even though trendy folks like Gretchen Wilson and Big And Rich are abusively gripping to his coattails, you have to remember that Hank, Jr. wasn't always the popular kid on the Nashville schoolbus. It took them years to recognize him as a true performer who stood on his own. Perhaps it was having to deal with the shadow of his father, or just that Nashville didn't want him to be a popular act, Bocephus never received his due until he was well into his career.
Hank, Jr. remedied the problem of being the outcast in Nashville by doing what so many artists can't do: be himself. Sure, he's loud, a little too honest, and just a flat-out hellraiser, but that's what folks like to hear. That's what has staying power.
This disc, which features Bocephus' biggest hits from the late 70's/early 80's, is loaded with enough attitude to shake up even the biggest poser in Nashville. Things open up with "Family Tradition," the song that is a legend unto itself in bars and honky-tonks across the USA. Next we have "Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound," "Women I've Never Had," and seven more instantly recognizable hits. My personal favorites include "Texas Women"(maybe 'cause I married one), and "Dixie On My Mind."
The biggest song on this disc has to be "A Country Boy Can Survive." It's the song that has spawned countless arguments over what would happen if the world fell apart tomorrow. It has empowered the good, bad, and ugly of the rural world. It makes city boys quiver in their metrosexual underpants. In short, it is one of the most popular songs ever put out there. It's influence is still felt today in acts like Montgomery Gentry and even Kid Rock.
In closing, buy this disc if you want real rebel country. Folks who like music by artists like Waylon Jennings will probably like this. Also, youngsters who enjoy Kid Rock need to check this out since without Hank, Kid Rock might have turned out to be another Vanilla Ice.
Give Bocephus his due, he's an integral part of the Country/Southern rock genre.
"Hank, Whyyyy Do You Drink...Whyyyy Do You Roll Smoke?".......2004-04-18
Hank Williams Jr. made me a Country Music fan. He mixes the perfect blend of Southern Rock and Country into his songs, creating music that even folks who dislike country music can learn to love; but make no mistake, it's without question classic Country music, and dang good music at that. This CD is a list of hits from 1979-1981, and if you're new to Hank's music, it's a good place to start getting acquainted with him.
What I love about Hank is that he shamelessly let's you know that he's a country boy and that he's proud of it. He's a real maverick and blazes his own trail instead of following country music trends. Hank does his thing and makes no apologies for it. If for no other reason, I personally would listen to his music for that reason alone.
Some of my favorites on this CD are the incomparable good-time bad-boy songs, "Family Tradition," "Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound," and "Women I've Never Had." If you've never had a good time drinkin' with Hank in the speakers, you're missin' out and need to toss back a few with the music blaring! Then there's one of the proud anthems for country folks all around America, "A Country Boy Can Survive," which is a favorite around my hillbilly-in-laws' house. Then there's the sober, "All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)," which is still a fun song to listen to even though all his rowdy friends have settled and "rowdy'd on down."
How can anyone not like Bocephus? He's plain spoken and sings his songs like he's just there to have a good time. Hey, anyone who sings a song that proclaims, "He likes happy and don't like sad," is worth listening to in my book; and any guy who sings songs about a ramblin' man, while askin' for a cold one in his hand is my kind of guy.
Don't stop to think it over, just put yourself in his position. Buy this CD, and make it a family tradition! It's a classic and worth every penny. Yee-Haw!!!!

New Jersey's favorite sons in the days before Bruce Springsteen, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons were practically the only group from the doo-wop era to continue to thrive during (and after) the British Invasion. Aside from a natural facility for four-part harmony, the group had the added advantage of keyboardist Bob Gaudio (who wrote most of the group's hits) and producer Bob Crewe, who gave the songs a Spector-esque sheen. This disc collects the best Four Seasons stuff from 1962 to 1965, including "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Dawn (Go Away)." It's an appealing package, but provides an incomplete picture of the group; Four Seasons fans should definitely check out Volume 2, which includes more complex later hits like "Let's Hang On" and "Working My Way Back To You." --Dan Epstein

The Valli Boys.......2007-05-16
A collection of 15 of the top hits by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, about the only American group to success during the British invasion of the mid-sixties, this CD is a wonderful trip into the past. Most of their Top 40 from 1962-1964 are here, except, alas, "Rag Doll." If you like the Four Seasons, you will love this CD.
Great memories cd.......2007-03-29
If you are a fan of the Four Season from the '60's and/or have just seen the Jersey Boys, this cd is a must !!
back to the past.......2007-01-09
i ordered the FOUR SEASONS GREATEST HITS VOL 1 & 2 and they are super.
in fact they turned a rather drab new years party into a 60's sing along ,with some rather good solos--
I still remember all the words!.......2006-03-16
This brought back memories of junior high and seeing the Four Seasons in concert! Great sounds!
First Seasons.......2005-12-28
Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 is a collection of the Four Seasons' hits from the first stage of their career. The songs have a Jersey street corner feel and the group's harmonies are stellar. Songs like the number one hits "Sherry", "Walk Like A Man" & "Big Girls Don't Cry" are classics as are other gems like "Bye, Bye Baby (Baby Goodbye)", "Big Man In Town" and great Bob Dylan cover "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" recorded under the name The Wonder Who with Frankie Valli singing in a register that is just beneath a dog whistle.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ALL ROUND.
Thanks for the Memories.......2006-08-21
I bought this CD to replace the cassette that I have worn out. This album is to country as the Beach Boys are to pop/rock. I married a "Redneck Girl" many years ago and the other songs on the disc remind me of my younger days in Mississippi, Arkansas, and other points South.
Bellamy Brothers Greatest Hits, Vol. 1.......2006-06-03
Recently I read an article on one hit wonders of the 1970's, and to my surprise the Bellamy Brothers were listed for their song "Let Your Love Flow" which topped the pop charts in 1976, and is their most recognizable hit. However, the Bellamy Brothers have had many hits on the country music charts, and have received more CMA nominations than any other duo in country music, a category which would include the Judds and Brooks & Dunn. This CD is the first volume of their hits from 1976-1982. Included are "Let Your Love Flow", "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body", "You Ain't Just Whistlin Dixie", "Lovers Live Longer", and "For All the Wrong Reasons" plus 5 more songs. If you want the Bellamy Brothers' latest hits, you would need to buy volumes 2 & 3 of their greatest hits. This first volume of their greatest hits is highly recommended.
Easy come, easy go country, with sparks of quality........2006-03-16
Well this is very polished country music. There at least two great traditional pop/country hybrid songs here. The rest is a very mixed bag. Track 1 Let your love flow is the flagship on this Cd with it`s very harmonious vocal and perfection in every instrumental departments. Track 2 If i said you have a beautiful body has much of the same quality. When the Bellamy Brothers sings in choir, they just melt into one. That`s great, but sometimes it can be to much polished, but on this one it certainly work for the better. Track 3 You aint just whistlin dixie, is an ok ballad, but nothing more. Booring most of times. Track 4 Sugar Daddy. A room for change . With it`s walk along tempo it kicks ok from start to the end.
Track 5 Dancin` Cowboy is very danceable, but this is to much musical candy sweetness. Track 6 Lovers live longer is much in same territory. Nothing much to add, realy. Track 7 Do you love as good as you look. This is more up tempo, and it works for better. At least some fuzz on the guitars for a change. Track 8 For all the wrong reasons has much of the same qualities as the previous one. At least it`s easy to catch the melody line. It`s anyway too much up`s and down`s alltrough. Track 9 Get into reggae cowboy. Reggae ?. Well the rythm is certainly here and there, but that`s it. The weird one from the Bellamys this one. Track 10 Redneck Girl, is the country rocker & roller hybrid on thIs CD. Ok. Anyway this CD is to much easy come and easy go country to make it a winner. But somewhere here and there it sparks quality.

It's got all my favorite Phil Vassar songs that I never knew he sung. Its great. The only disappointment is that the arrangements are a little different than what you hear on the radio.
Phil Vasser Greatest Hits 1.......2007-02-07
Wow what can i say about this Hunk of a man . This is a great cd of all his best hits, ones he wrote and sang. Some of ones he did not sing like Little Red Rodeo, Real Good Man, and others. The best of the best of Phil. After being right by the Stage Dec 2006 seeing Phil in person im a Philfan for life. Buy this Cd you wont be disapointed.
I love this CD!.......2007-01-30
This is the first Phil Vassar CD that I have and I really like it. I always like his songs that are played on the radio. This is the perfect CD to have because it includes all of the popular songs.
Great!.......2007-01-12
I loved this CD. I listen to it all the time in the car...even my kids have started to sing along with it!
Catchy and Fun.......2007-01-10
Phil is a fun guy, and his music is fun. This CD is a great pick-me-up. There are no super-deep songs, but Phil's never claimed to want to write one. This is a great choice to get a feel for Vassar's style and personality.

While the Yardbirds graduated three of the greatest guitarists in rock history--Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page--during their 1963-68 existence, the group's best work came during Beck's '65-'66 tenure, which produced nearly all their hit singles and virtually everything found here. (Notable exception: their debut hit, "For Your Love," which Clapton was barely audible on anyway.) From the cat scratch fever of "I'm A Man" to the guitar-as-weapon solo in "Mister, You're a Better Man Than I," Beck rewrote the lead guitar textbook, and on one of the few songs recorded when he and Page were in the band together--"Happenings Ten Years Time Ago"--they foreshadowed the sound of '70s rock. --Billy Altman

This is where the roots took hold.......2006-11-12
I was reading through the reviews I saw where someone called the Yardbirds 'leaning towards pop rock.....I am sorry but were you there in 64 cause I was and when I saw the Ybyrds at the Hulabaaloo on Sunset Blvd there was no Jimi, no Carlos, no Janice, Bealtles there were and Stones there were but put them in club with Ybyrds and you had no contest the Big Boys had singers and writers and genius but blazing ear-shattering blistering blues rock well like I said no contest. Clapton, Beck, Paige was it lucky chance? Not hardly it was the best seeking out the best. Get this CD and you hold the root structure and 'first fruits' of all we treasure today. I recently saw Velvet Revolver in S Fla and I was whipped back 40 yrs blazing searing ROCK great vocals freight train bass and drums but what I saw back then was in club of maybe 150. Own this CD as a show of graditute for those that gave us Hard Rock and remember we too have roots.
So, Cool.......2006-08-18
Being a huge fan of sixties music, I find this CD very appealing in terms of content, originality, and style. This group boasts three of thee greatest guitarists in the world; Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page. Their blues inspired wailings make this group stand out above other groups of the same era.
This music is gritty and raw and because the sound production wasn't really great on this particular album, it sounds a lot darker and moodier than maybe it's supposed to be. I'm not a musician and I have no idea about the technical aspects of music, but having been raised by a musician, I know in my soul how things should sound.
If you're looking to improve your music collection you really can't go wrong with this little gem. I know a lot of people gave it four stars and I'm not trying to disuade you from reading their reviews, but I really think (and feel) that if you want something loud, boisterous and completely cool, this CD is waiting for you.
Peace...
Yardbirds - 'Greatest Hit,Vol.1: 1964-1966' (Rhino/WEA).......2006-07-08
Total of eighteen tracks here, most fans should recognize these cuts, like "For Your Love","Evil Hearted You","Shapes Of Things",the boot stompin' "I'm A Man","I Ain't Got You","Got Love If You Want It" and so on.With all the Yardbirds compilation CD releases out there, this one is a pretty good pick,I thought.I realize there are certain tunes you likely remember that don't appear on this CD,but keep in mind, this is Vol.1.Semi-recommended.
Mother Lode for Second British Invasion.......2006-02-16
The Yardbirds were one of those great 'first British Invasion' groups whose primary claim to later fame is the fact that they provided the breeding ground for the stars of the 'second British invasion' lead by Cream, Traffic, and others. The thing which is so easy to forget is that groups like the Yardbirds, the Spenser Davis Group, Manfred Mann, Them, and the Graham Bond Organization were such fertile breeding grounds because their stuff was darn good itself.
I love it when I see contemporary commercials come up with songs from these great early bands, and listening to this album shows us just how important the Yardbirds were in their own right, not just as the launching pad for the careers of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Paige.
This is an essential album for any survey of rock roots!
Good stuff .........2005-06-21
Will there be a volume 2? hard to tell with Rhino .. I hope they put "Over Under" on there ,and Jeff's Boogie .. which was left off the Raven compilation .

A fairly generic, consistent mid-'60s-era package--which means it rules. Greatest Hits Vol. 1 concentrates on chart hits, but nonetheless packs some wild cards. "Forget Domani" and "World We Knew (Over and Over)" are odd choices, and don't turn up much. There are also, naturally, lots of tracks missing. It's unclear why "Forget Domani" would displace, say, "Anytime at All," but these are minor complaints, and if you don't have it, here it is. This is an early CD package (from 1987), which means that the niche it was created to fill probably isn't in quite the same place anymore. Fans should take note. Neophytes: Don't worry about it, this is a great place to start. --Gavin McNett

Frank Sinatra CD.......2007-01-11
Item arrived in a reasonable amount of time, and was in excellent condition. I am glad I ordered it.
(Almost) obsolete hits collection.......2006-09-01
This was one of the first CDs I ever bought, which was in 1989 while in high school. At that time, there was a dearth of Sinatra collections and I just wanted a starter CD. This is a decent collection of songs from the Reprise years, though not one I would purchase today due to the fact this material can be found on more recent, more comprehensive collections. Even though Amazon lists the original release date as 1961, I believe it was actually 1968. Many, if not all, of the songs on this collection were recorded after 1961. Note the title is "Greatest Hits," not "Best Of." These are songs that hit the pop charts and are not necessarily his best songs. Some are classic Sinatra, such as "Strangers in the Night," "Summer Wind," "It Was a Very Good Year," and "That's Life." However, there are also some you might have never heard before, such as "Somewhere in Your Heart," "Forget Domani" or "This Town." These are not bad songs, yet are certainly not indicative of his best work. The essential songs in this collection can also be found on "Sinatra Reprise: The Very Good Years," with one exception: "Somethin' Stupid." If it weren't for the omission of this track from "The Very Good Years," this collection would be completely obsolete. Furthermore, the twelve tracks on this disc run a total of just over thirty minutes. This might have been acceptable in 1968, but is ridiculous compared to today's standards. To add insult to injury, this CD has not been digitally mastered; as such, a slight hiss can be heard. Even though there are some very good songs here, don't bother with this CD. (At the time of this writing, this CD retails for $10.99. I certainly wouldn't pay more than $5.00 for it)
worth it for the cheese factor alone.......2006-02-12
In 1963, the strain of wearing so many hats in the entertainment industry led Frank Sinatra to jettison one of them: he sold his controlling interest in Reprise Records, the head of a record label no longer. Part of that strain had been caused by his difficulties in generating the kind of smash hits on the singles charts that he had enjoyed during his glory years at Capitol, and of his new albums competing with Capitol dumping his back catalogue onto the market at cut-rate price.
The other impact to not just his commercial prowess, but that of everyone else in the music industry, was of course the arrival of the Beatles to the U.S. in the winter of 1964. Far more than Elvis, they changed the nature of the market, and suddenly Sinatra had to compete not simply with a generation gap as he had in the fifties, but a major realignment of purchasing habits that went across a much larger segment of all age ranges.
Enter producer Jimmy Bowen and arrangers Ernie Freeman and Billy Strange, the latter two responsible for ten of the twelve arrangements on Greatest Hits. They helped Sinatra accept and incorporate newer sounds into his instrumental palette, and it showed in the chart placings, with the modern sounds of "Strangers in the Night," "Somethin' Stupid," "That's Life," "Summer Wind," and "The World We Knew" all making the top 40, the former two both #1, during Sinatra's most impressive assaults on the charts while at Reprise, in 1966 and 1967.
No, this is not the classic Sinatra of the Capitol years, or even that of his first eight American albums on Reprise where he maintained the same approach and quality of custom in the fifties. What it is, however, is Sinatra embracing the new aesthetic of the 1960s, or at least as much of it as he could, and meeting it on his terms.
Certainly, the best item here is "Summer Wind," one of the last great collaborations with his mainstay, Nelson Riddle, and the final time one of their works made the radio. But the album is worth buying for the over-the-top, over-dramatic stabs Sinatra did make at commerciality here. The Gordon Jenkins' arranged "It Was A Very Good Year" has a very different meaning here than in the context of September of My Years, and all the songs here have their own very enjoyable charms, for schmaltz factor if nothing else.
Serious Sinatra? We've got Only the Lonely, Where Are You?, and The Concert Sinatra for that. For a sixties sound-fest while cruising down the highway, I'll put Sinatra's Greatest Hits along with Dylan, the Stones, Motown and Stax, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Dionne Warwick, and yes, daughter Nancy in the multi-disc player, and hit random. Nothing better for escaping the city and heading for the beach or the mountains.
THE GREATEST SONGS BY THE GREATEST SINGER.......2004-05-24
THIS IS A GREAT CD. BUT WHAT MAKES IT A SUPER GREAT CD ARE THE TWO GREATEST SONGS THAT FRANK SINATRA ( THE GREATEST SINGER OF THE 20TH CENTURY) SANG. THOSE TWO ARE "SUMMER WIND" AND "OVER & OVER THE WORLD WE KNEW". I REST MY CASE.
