Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. In all, the soundtrack's pleasing variety of Eastern music mirrors the film's old and new worlds living within a singular culture. --Bryan Reesman

5 out of 5 stars Monsoon Wedding Soundtrack is Terrific.......2007-05-18

I really enjoyed the movie and was pleased to find the soundtrack. Great cd if you're a fan of Bollywood!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-03-24

I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!

The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.

5 out of 5 stars Just as fabulous as the movie!.......2007-01-31

This is an excellent soundtrack from an excellent movie. The music is fantastic - makes you want get up and move your feet! It's got such a happy, wistful, exotic flavor throughout the CD. I think this will probably be one that I wear out from listening to it so much!

5 out of 5 stars Love It, Love It, Love It.......2007-01-21

I just love this CD. I'm preferential to the work of Mychael Danna and this is another awesome work of his. There is everything from old Indian love ballads to the popular Bollywood music of today, with some very beautiful instrumentals in between.

I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."

4 out of 5 stars Culture-Happy-Dance-Reflect-Appreciate-Savor-Relax-Laugh.......2006-11-06

Above I listed some words that first came to mind when I thought about this cd.
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent........2005-07-01

This album is excellent and brilliantly composed, but the first I've listened to from Chris Spheeris, so I cannot compare it to any others. Some of the other reviewers have deemed it background music, though, which is false and unfair to say. The listener will definately be able to capture the sounds of this album as much as in any other album of any genre. Definately one of my favorites. Definately worth listening to.

4 out of 5 stars Radiant, sentimental music with a hint of an edge.......2004-01-01

The warm, touching side of Chris Spheeris takes center stage in this instrumental album, which seems to be a reorganized release of his earlier recording for Sony, "Desires of the Heart". Composer Spheeris is featured on keyboards and guitar, joined by David Peterson on oboe and English horn, and accompanied by Christopher Bock on light accoustic percussion, Darryl Wright on electric bass, and occasional recorded nature sounds. As with much of Spheeris' work, the selections on "Desires" don't fit neatly into any particular stylistic category. Accoustic and electronic instruments blend together seamlessly to create music that is emotive, heartfelt and approachable. Some pieces are pervaded by a subtle electronic ambience that lingers discreetly in the background, creating a relaxing, timeless atmosphere. Other selections are gently upbeat, bouyed by tasteful world percussion and moved forward by a progressive harmonic structure. All are pleasant and interesting, with good, appealing melodies and engagingly varied construction. Much of Spheeris' work on "Desires" reminds me of Yanni's style, and fans of one should enjoy the other too. Try "Reflections of Passion" by Yanni, and for a more intense musical journey, inspired by many world-music elements, check out Spheeris' "Dancing with the Muse".

5 out of 5 stars Peace and serenity and upbeat.......2001-04-18

This CD is, as another put it, one of Chris' best. It is a wonderful listen whether walking, in prayer, or just relaxing. Chris, all of your works are wonderful -- this is just one of the very best.

5 out of 5 stars A really lush selection of "goes-with-anything" music.......1999-09-23

I've got all of Chris Spheeris' albums and this one is my favorite. It's perfect for background music when working or at dinner. Very soothing and each track is rich and memorable.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Nice Easy Listening CD.......1999-05-06

Chris Spheeris has always been a favorite of mine and this CD doesn't disappoint. There isn't one track I don't like since almost all of them have strong "hooks". Great for background music for dinner.

Album Description

"Burning Desires" is a unique CD that presents the legendary guitar playing of Frank Corrales with actual recipes for a full-course Mexican dinner by PBS chef Melissa Guerra. The various songs in the upbeat CD are linked to recipes for a variety of dishes including enchiladas, tortillas, quesadillas and chili con carne. Several songs even used the sound of hands patting tortillas as a rhythm instrument.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Frank and Ben Cook up another spicy Tex-Mex listening treat!.......2000-05-22

Frank, with the help of Ben Tavera King has done it again, this time instead of movies and cantinas, the influence is on cooking and yummy Tex-Mex treats. Frank is accompanied on this album by Los Tortilleros (the tortilla makers) who consist of: Ben Tavera King who plays rhythm guitar, lead guitar on the cut "Enchiladas Rojas", harpa Mexicana and my favorite the corn tortillas, (which don't last long in my possession to use as an instrument); Jose Alfredo Trevino who provides the "gritos" in just the right places in the musical dishes. There is a double delight to this album, which is a collection of six traditional Tex-Mex recepies from the pen of Melissa Guerra, the celebrated PBS-TV chef. Track number 10, El Porro de Jaime, an adopted traditional Colombian folk tune is the intro music to Melissa's TV program, "The Texas Provincial Kitchen" Included in this platter is "un poco the todo" (a litte of everything) musical to cook and savor by. Track # 2 "Jesusita En Chihuahua" is a yummy spicy polka number used in the move "Like Water For Chocolate". Each track has it's own flavor which like "Mira Luisa" and "La Bamba" adds a bit of spark to "comiendo o cocinando" (eating or cooking). My sombrero is off to chef Frank and his most able assistants Ben and Melissa in assembling a treat for both ear and palate. What a great idea!

A recent John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble release on OmniTone was nominated for the forty-eighth annual Grammy Awards (Large Jazz Ensemble category. Over the years, they have developed a unique sound and are well on the way to becoming an institution in Europe.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars John Hollenbeck, most interesting jazzman alive.......2007-03-10

And after multiple listenings, I'm beginning to think this may be his greatest accomplishment. What he's done here is to almost completely reconceive the idea of a big band, bringing it entirely into the twenty-first century. This disc breaths and effortlessly moves in precincts never before imagined by writers for and practitioners of big band music. Here, the large jazz ensemble becomes an organic creature, each instrument and section conceived as absolutely integrally related to all others. Hence, there's a kind of democracy of sound, a wild egalitarian consonance between woodwinds, brass, piano, keys, bass, and drums--each grouping or individual voice gaining uncanny gravitas on account of this approach, none standing out above its fellows, all equally leading or supporting as required.

One could, I suppose, regard this as a warm-up for his Large Ensemble, but that would be wrong. There's a weird anarchic serendipity operating here that isn't quite approached on that disc, A Blessing, brilliant as it is. Maybe it's the collaboration of Horst-Michael Schaffer and Heinrich von Kalnein, coleaders of the German Jazz Bigband Graz, with Hollenbeck that gives this disc its special cachet. The sound here is also absolutely spectacular. Whatever it is, I don't know, but this is certainly one of the most, if not the most, riveting jazz disc in my sprawling collection.

Three of the the seven tunes, "Just Like Him," "Abstinence," and "After a Dance or Two, We Sit Down for a Pint with Gil and Tim," have been previously recorded, "Abstinence" on both the Claudia Quintet's first and A Blessing, "After a Dance . . ." on the Claudia Quintet's first, and "Just Like Him" on I, Claudia. But they take on an entirely new character here--both, strangely, more frenetic and more logical.

What John Hollenbeck is doing both with the small jazz ensemble and with big band music is unprecedented (save, perhaps, in the latter case, with Ilhan Ersahin's Nublu Jazz Orchestra). If you want to encounter the absolute cutting edge of 21st century jazz, look no farther. But don't be scared off: there's nothing inaccessible or weirdly avant-garde about this music--just sounds of mystery, power, and wonder.

Chris Spheeris is one of the best musicians I have heard in a long time. I don't like to think of myself as being old (48) but is today's music the worst music you have heard? It is so good to hear quality music in Chris Spheeris. The problem is that they don't play his music on the radio or in stores where people can hear it and get back to great music. I just by chance discovered his music and have been spreading it since to anyone that would listen. Thank you.

Anything Chris does is fantastic, and he always moves the spirit through his creative sounds. I've been a fan for 10 years. Finally, I met him in Sedona when he was playing at Rainbow's End. His personality matches his music - sweet and beautiful, sexy and exciting.

    Album Description

With strong Louisiana home-base elements, Big Al & the Heavyweights also combine Texan and Chicago features in their musical gumbo with Hey, Hey Mardi Gras. With twists of rock, R&B, Delta and Cajun music, Big Al and company lay down a heavy beat that is impossible to ignore.

Opening with the musically vivacious "Bound By Love" and grooving into "Wrestlin' With the Blues," Big Al and the Heavyweights take charge with rockin', blazin' blues fit for a king. Showing much more a strong rock influence than any regional flavor, these blues cook with interesting percussion, dynamite guitar lines, and beefy arrangements that are top shelf.

With a little humor thrown in on cuts like "Eat More Crawfish" and lovelorn cuts like the shufflin' "Where's My Baby" and "Cheatin Blues," Big Al leads his crew through the paces with outstanding results. Blues don't get any deeper than tunes like "Make It Rain" - a real stop/look and listener.

Born and raised in New Orleans, drummer/vocalist and bandleader Big Al (Albert J. Lauro, Jr.) is accompanied by his musical partner and co-writer Tim Wagoner, who contributes the earthy lead vocals and smart guitar action. It is the splendid slide guitar of Fred James that is heard on "Cajun Roux." The movin' accordion sound is from Eddie Blakeley, who also contributes background vocals. What makes the CD so special is the band's ability to infuse Cajun with blues and rock.

Hey, Hey Mardi Gras is the perfect record to be played LOUD at your next cookout. The mood's exuberant and the groove never stops. Big Al & the Heavyweights deliver with knockout strength!

Bass Desires has become a recurring concept since this 1985 date, when it was merely the title of a CD and not a band. But the two-guitar quartet has a special appeal to bassist-leader Marc Johnson, who's joined here by drummer Peter Erskine and celebrated guitarists Bill Frisell and John Scofield. A study in the stylistic contrasts and shared values of the two six-stringers, Bass Desires shows off Scofield's linear, rapid-fire and hard-edged attack and Frisell's floating solos that use guitar synth to bend lines with elastic flexibility. Johnson's Japanese-themed "Samurai Hee-Haw" has Scofield tempering his funk with touches of hoedown, while Frisell adds atmospheric waves of sound to the folk ballad "Black Is the Color." Johnson is a superb melodist, apparent particularly in his unaccompanied introduction to the "Resolution" theme from John Coltrane's A Love Supreme, where Johnson's solo space builds toward strong work from both guitarists. All the tunes show thought, with Erskine's title tune setting a slow-moving theme against a fast tempo he and Johnson set down. The group is a format that seems to work for all concerned, with Frisell and Scofield clearly thriving on one another's presence, as well as with the rhythm section. --Stuart Broomer

It's One Of My Favorite Fusion Album? If You Are A John Scofield 'Or' Bill Frissel Fan This Cd Is Must Have! Two Great Guitars And Peter Erskine On Drums.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-03-09

This is one of the best ECM recirds ever. The sound is perfect and the playing simply blows your mind. Also there are both Bill Frisell and John Scofield on the record. Unique.

    5 out of 5 stars A Bit Worn Production-Wise But Still a Classic.......2005-08-10

Before the days of Amazon I bought this CD on one of my infrequent trips to a "hip" record store back in 1987. I subsequently listened to it probably at least 200 times and still return to it occasionally with great joy.

This is one of the all-time great examples of improvisatory music involving two guitars. The interplay here is just amazing. When Scofield solos on "Resolution," it just seems like Bill Frisell, Marc Johnson, and Peter Erskine are GLUED to him. Every twist and turn of his solo brings forth complimentary jabs, thrusts, and DRIVE from the rhythm section. It is truly awesome.

The first two songs are the easy standouts; "Mojo Highway" is almost as good. It's worth the purchase price (especially a used price) for those three tracks alone. The rest is not quite as engrossing but is still very good. Almost 20 years later I still think this is some of the best guitar jazz ever put down.

Yes, it's quite clear it was recorded in the late 1980s, when even JAZZ was affected by the production trend toward copious amounts of reverb. Get past that -- and this CD will reward repeated listening.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite jazz CD's.......2005-04-01

This is one of the better examples of jazz fusion to come out of the otherwise dead period of the 80's. Marc Johnson's songwriting, bass playing, and supporting cast blend to create a cohesive and melodic jam session of world music rhythems.

So many cultures are sampled in these compostions, Folk, Country and Western, Japanese, Blues, Funk, Indian, Reggae,
classical...you name it and it is represented somewhere on this disk. My personal fav is "Mojo Highway". A half funk/half reggae opus featuring many of Peter Erskines subtle and not so subtle drum riffs. It also features the best (of the many available) versions of John Scofield's blues classic "Thanks Again".

As typical on the ECM label the recording quality is stunning...particularly the bass response. You wanna test out your subwoofer and annoy your neighbors? Pop in this disk and let the bad neighbor relations commence.

    5 out of 5 stars Flat-out amazing.......2005-01-06

I am not, by and large, a fan of 'fusion,' whether it's called that or any of the other euphemisms for bad cocktails of rock and other musical forms. I also have no use for 'smooth' jazz as the term is used.

This is one of those instances where the musicianship of the participants rises above a contrived splice of styles. Peter Erskine's infallible time, Sco's signature blowing (at a time when it was maturing from the Miles years), and Marc Johnson's virtuoso bass playing would be enough. But Bill Frisell's synthesizer guitar work is the catalyst that really makes this album a great one.

Perhaps most amazing of all is, with an electric player like Sco, AND Frisell's synthesizer guitar, the album is so utterly organic and naturual.

And from the wonky 'Samurai Hee-Haw' to the hard-swinging 'Resolution' (the Coltrane tune from 'A Love Supreme,' not the Mahavishnu song), to the ethereal 'Black is the Color,' the album has no weak spots. It's four great artists who had absolutely spectacular chemistry. The result is a rarity for 80's jazz recordings, genuine originality, variety and absolutely nothing contrived or phony.

As far as the test of time, it's been in my rotation in vinyl and then CD for roughly 15 years, and out of the thousands of albums I own, it's still one that I keep coming back to.

This second recorded meeting of Johnson's quartet with drummer Peter Erskine and celebrated guitarists Bill Frisell and John Scofield took place in 1987, and it's every bit as inspired as the first. Each member of the group contributes compositions, and they pick up on different qualities inherent in the band. Erskine's slow infusion of the gospel "Sweet Soul" offers Memphis soul notes to Scofield, while Frisell finds a comfortable base for some pedal steel-like country. Scofield's "The Twister" picks up on the rock basics implicit in the instrumentation--he and Frisell are both very electric guitarists here--and adds some harmonic complexity to the groove. Frisell's "1951" gives the listener a good idea of what Thelonious Monk writing quarter-tone country & western would sound like. There's much here that's playful, but there's also emotional power in the brooding force of Johnson's "Crossing the Corpus Callosum" and elegiac beauty in his "Hymn for Her." --Stuart Broomer

Now this was oen huge disappointment. Do not get me wrong. I love Frisell and I completely agree with the other reviewer. It is simply that I was so blown away by the first bass Desires that I expected much much more. Also Bill Frisell has been associated with so many exceptional records that a very good record is simply not enough.

5 out of 5 stars The 5 Stars Go To Bill Frisell.......2006-01-07

I love John Scofield's guitar playing don't get me wrong, but the way he arranges his compositions aren't quite up to par with Bill Frisell's. First of all, look at what Bill Frisell has done in the past 20 years, and then look what Scofield has done. There's really no contest. Bill Frisell is one of biggest things to happen to jazz guitar since the Pat Metheny explosion in the late 70s. Like Pat Metheny, he plays unusual music, but what he's playing really works. I can't say the same for Scofield, because it seems he hasn't really pushed himself into anything experimental or exploratory, in fact, Sco hasn't really gone in a new direction at all. Sco has always stayed where he was at, which is okay, but I don't really feel inspired when I hear him play. Scofield is an exceptional player, but when it comes down to it, Bill Frisell and Pat Metheny are so much better at what they do then Scofield is at what he does. A good example of Bill Frisell pushing himself into ackward and new musical situations would be his collaborations and work on John Zorn's Naked City projects. I mean that is some of the most dissonant and absolutely insane jazz music I ever heard. Frisell has also been on more records than Scofield, and probably Metheny as well. If you don't believe me go to Bill Frisell's website and look up all his session work. That HUGE list will give you a little insight at what this virtuoso has been doing.

Now on to the review of Marc Johnson's Bass Desires "Second Sight" album. This is the second album by this group and I must say that I'm more impressed with it than the first, but it's hard to forget the unforgettable opening song on the first album, "Samurai Hee-Haw." That's a really good song and both Frisell and Scofield really sound great together. The music on this second album ("Second Sight") showcases the two players better I think than the first. They also seem to have a little bit more room to stretch composition wise. My favorite song on this album is "Small Hands" composed by Frisell. It's a very hauntingly beautiful song. It's this side of Bill that I love to hear more than anything.

I can't go on about this music. I just hope that however buys this album, that they have at least more than one Bill Frisell albums.
