5 out of 5 stars Blue Hawaiians hit their stride.......2001-08-30

This may be their best CD (possible exception is the Christmas CD). The playing is inspired, the arrangements are pure 60s surfdom. Great fidelity to boot. The bonus track should only be listened to STRAIGHT (or you risk years of therapy).

5 out of 5 stars Their best album.......2000-02-06

This is the Hawaiians' best album by far. There's not a bad song on it and all of the band's talents are highlighted. This is not rave-up surf--it's mostly more mellow and jazzy. And it's not all instrumental--there are some (all good) vocals.

5 out of 5 stars Don't forget Oregon's Own Surf Trio.......1999-02-17

I'm solid with the other reviewer here, but if you like the lounge sounz of the B.H.'s, but want a bit more punch in your surf, check out the Surf Trio (Oregon) and Man or Astroman (Alabama) as well.

4 out of 5 stars Surf Music Is Back In True Form.......1998-10-10

Jimi Hendrix once sang that you would never hear surf music again. Wrong! It's back, riding the undertow of swing and lounge. All told, the Blue Hawaiians are the best of this scene that encompasses some good bands (e.g., Phantom Surfers, Aquavelvets, King of Hawaii and Bomboras). This is a more mellow version of surf music -- think moonlit beaches and enjoying cocktails rather than Wipeout. For those looking for a more upbeat surf sound, check out the Bomboras.

4 out of 5 stars Yo I'm Glad This Came Out.......2006-02-19

Yo This album introduced me to alot of artist I don't get to hear bout being from the east coast. I really enjoyed it. Some of the artist that I heard of or already purchased some of their work impressed me as well. The artist I were introduced to were Sly Boogie,Self Scientific,Kam and Crooked I. Crooked I man that man is pure flames right there though. I'm lookin forward to purchasing something solid from him. Of course you got Royce and Canibus, Common and others which makes this a all the gang is here kinda feelin to the album. Its' tight in my opinion don't sleep. If you wanna hear that raw midwest to west flow get this immediately. The production is there the artist show up and it's enough tracks to satisfy your craving of ill rhymes with some funny skits as well. Sway and Tech should get some hand shakes and pats on the back for this forreal. They openned my eyes to some artists I heard of but never heard.

3 out of 5 stars Sounds a little too commercial.......2006-01-11

This or That was a better album than this. There are some dope rhymes galore but my problem are the choruses to the songs. They're either R&B-flavored or just weak overall and what a listener remembers most in a song is the chorus. I suspected that this album would be different since Sway started working for MTV. Also, there's too much Chino XL on here. I like Chino as much as the next fan but I could have just popped in one of his albums if I wanted to hear him that much.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars... The DVD made this definately worth the purchase..........2005-09-21

Let me state this before I say anything else --- "THIS OR THAT" is much much much much much better than this album. I mean its awesome to see that Sway & Tech still care about hiphop and lyricism as much as I do, but you can't even compare this album to This or That... infact even the album SAMPLER released on Sway & Tech's website was better than this album!

This or That was a mixtape that was a continuous flow of tracks, that blended so well together --- even the old school break in This Or That was showcasing how there were still rappers holding on to old school heritage. 'Back to Basics' continues the old school trend, but only in small dosages. Most of the R&B sung tracks tried to make lyrical heavyweights look commericalized and it didn't exactly mix well together. Chino XL & Tracy Lane did not mix well at all...

Anyway before I start complaining anymore, let me say why this album is also very good at times. Dirty Birdy was incredibly entertaining to listen to. Chino XL & Canibus FINALLY made a track together along with a hot appearance by Royce da 5'9. In fact, ALL the lyrics were very on point. Chino XL finally released some new material (OH I WISH HE WOULD GET SOME BETTER MANAGEMENT!!!)... although I REALLY FROWNED AT the 2000 live freestyle by him because it was released 4-5 years ago!!! Crooked Eye got some shine and his tracks were all fire (even though I heard the outro's verse before). RZA's intro was pretty hot. Dirty Birdy was fun as hell to listen to. Juice's track was really heart-felt! Even the rappers who popped up just for ONE verse all spit something hot (especially Canibus)... I'm just a little upset that some tracks on here were just some previously released material, rather than all the tracks being exclusively made for this compilation...

Either way, the album is stil 4.5 stars and the addition of the DVD to watch all the rappers in the booth helped to elevate this to a 5 star album...

Curiousity killed the cat, but if u come across this album for the first time. Your curiousity will be awarded --- in fact you'll definately be at least somewhat satisfied!

3 out of 5 stars Slightly damaged.......2005-09-14

When I received the cd, the case was cracked across the top of the case. I'm not sure if that was from shipment or from the shipper but I don't like it.

Continuing in the vein of his 1998 CD, Velvet, is the thickly blues-based and more self-assured Hip Sway. Beautifully invoking a sense of old-school jazz sensibilities, Hip Sway mixes acid-jazz ambience and the powerful soul touches of coproducer Rodney Lee. The title track finds Standring echoing his muted Wes Montgomery-bound melody with wah-wah punch lines, then duetting casually with the eager tenor of Richard Elliot before exploding into an irresistible brassy hook--all over Lee's moody blue synth harmony. "Glamour Girls" features a propelling vamp reminiscent of Lee Morgan's "Sidewinder" under Standring's note-for-note duet with tenorman Dino Soldo, while Lee does double duty on a Hammond B-3 solo over the synth-created vamp.

Fast forwarding to the present, Standring invokes a bit of ambient master Brian Eno on "What Is Is," as he and Lee exchange distant, distorted melody lines over a spaced-out synth wash as Dave Karasony's train-track drum patter continues to hypnotize. Ditto the gentle hypnosis on a cover of 10cc's mystical "I'm Not in Love"; Standring doesn't do much improvising with the melody, but his alternating guitar tones and the enveloping atmosphere--complete with barely audible synth horns--are just like, well, Velvet. --Jonathan Widran

5 out of 5 stars Smooth Jazz Rocks!.......2005-01-08

If u're into smooth jazz, acid jazz, jazz-rap, or jazz hip-hop I will say you must recommend this album 2 those that dislike the changing and sounding of contemporary smooth jazz. Yeah I know everybody doesn't like Rap, Pop, or Hip-Hop or whateva to be added into smooth jazz. I don't care but I like Rap and Hip-Hop 'specially Pop too. This is the one I found most interesting since I heard some of his latest cuts off his 3rd CD. This is a classic 2 date 'specially Chris Standring is probably known 2day as the next Ronny Jordan, Grover Washington, Norman Brown, George Duke, George Benson, or whateva. Have gave 2 shots of it at first but now I'm ready 2 go pick it up once it's still available. And 'specially I recommend this along with Groovalicious and Velvet (which I heard recently) and check out Ronny Jordan, Guru, Us3, Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Digable Planets, The Rebirth of Cool collection, Roy Hargrove, D'Angelo, Common, Brand New Heavies that created this jazz-rap genre I would say.

5 out of 5 stars Hip Sway - Way Cool - Cool Jazz.......2002-11-20

If you like smooth jazz half as much as I do, this album definitely belongs in your collection. If your plans this evening include kicking back in your favorite reading chair with your feet up and the lights down low, grab a good book and crack open that bottle of Cab Sav Shiraz! Chillin' and Hip Sway: what a great combo.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth Jazz Vibes.......2000-05-20

English guitarist Chris Standring (who made his mark on Rick Braun's Body & Soul and was named 1998 debut artist of the year by Art Good's JazzTrax) turned heads with his first CD, Velvet, which featured one of the best and most unique smooth jazz songs of recent years with the title track. The CD was classic - no filler - and was packed with hooks galore, great melodies and the kind of guitar sound that drew fans of George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Brian Tarquin, Brian Hughes and others. His latest CD, Hip Sway (Instinct) matches his debut, which set the bar high. No sophomore jinx here. Listen to the killer hook in the title track (enhanced by Richard Elliot's sax) and just try not to be swept away by Standring's lyricism.

Like Hughes and Grant Geissman, Standring has a thing for joyous '60s sounds, mixing groovy with today's acid-jazz sensibility - check out "Glamour Girls," the wah-wah and keyboards in "Big Feet ... Big Shoes" and the Sly Stone funky guitar in "Pins & Needles." There are two covers of classics: "How Deep is Your Love" begins with a Muzak feel, but eventually gets into gear with Standring's riffs and great percussion. "I'm Not in Love" is similar. There are some tasty cuts here, especially "Good Medicine" and "Smile," both so delicious, so catchy, so smooth. "Ultraviolet" is the "Velvet" of this CD, the song that stands apart for its innovation. Standring dubs in an acoustic guitar refrain over his electric playing (very Pat Metheny-like on this cut), while Rodney Lee's fast "drum freaking" propels the song forward. The CD closes with "Georgina," a ballad with drum brushes. Smooth grade: A+

5 out of 5 stars ContemporaryJazz.com.......2000-05-20

Hip is defined as something familiar with the latest ideas, styles, etc. Sway is defined as to move or swing to and fro. Combine both terms meanings as "to excite or swing emotions and favorable dulcet sounds." Standring has produced a winner for his sophomore effort. The title track is the epitome of blending acid jazz flavors with soulful motions. The catchy tunes on Hip Sway solidify Standring as a pioneering guitarist of this new decade. "Big Feet Big Shoes" is a cool, hip song which you can envision a carefree individual stepping through downtown amongst a large crowd without any apprehension of time or people engulfed all around, but this person knows the meaning of "cool" by their demeanor and walk. Hip Sway establishes many swinging moods and feelings, which are delectable and vast. Grade: A

5 out of 5 stars Gavin--by Tina Salazar.......2000-05-20

Guitarist Chris Standring makes quite an impression with the release of his second full length. The first single and title track "Hip Sway" has deservedly received early recognition for it's unique mix of contemporary jazz style with a 60's retro-soul feel. Influenced by the likes of Cannonball Adderly, Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Smith and early Hancock, Standring integrates himself among the musically elite and develops a style all his own. The mid-tempo track weaves a melodic flow of guitar hooks with the smooth sounds of guest Richard Elliot's tenor sax, giving listeners lots to appreciate from the first listen.

3 out of 5 stars Good Album from not-so-popular band.......2006-05-22

The first time I ever heard of Phaser was a year or so ago when "Life and Illusion" was played on a radio music channel on my satellite at home. The song sounded very much like The Verve, and since I'm a big Verve fan, I really enjoyed it. It wasn't until a few months ago I decided to get the CD, and though I did think that the album wasn't as good as I expected it to be, this album is still quite strong. The standout tracks on here are "Life and Illusion", "Sway", and "Sweet Marie". The later two being sweetly crafted lubbaly epics that swirl around you. This band definitely has an atomspheric sound to them, with echoed guitars and vocals that seem to get lost in the music. I would definitely compare them to the more earlier work of The Verve.

    5 out of 5 stars Promising.......2003-10-21

I haven't bought the CD (yet). I just listened to one of the songs in digital cable (maybe the song was Are you there???) and i was really blown away, just as when I first listened to "Slide away" by The verve( a long time ago). In fact, it seems Phaser had a "A storm in heaven"-ish sound, which is cool. I hope I can see them live in LA soon.

4 out of 5 stars Sway to Pahser.......2003-09-21

I was invited by a friend to The Earl in Atlanta to see his friend's band from DC.While he referenced some groups to describe the band's sound, I really did not know what to expect. My expectations were fully satisfied. Within minutes of their launch into the second song - I was truely intrigued and found myself listening to every note, stroke and verse with intensity.

This band has intensity but adorns it with a soulful sensitivity that gets under your skin. I listened to The Verve the day after and mid-way through Catching The Butterfly I thought of Life & Illusion. These guys have a deliciuosly, beautiful approach but they are not soft. When they throw down - They throw down.

I am so pleasantly suprised by this new find and can't wait to hear more........

4 out of 5 stars Excellent disc for people into the shoegazer scene........2003-04-28

"Sway" may be 10 years too late or distanced far enough from the shoegazer scene to distinguish itself. The composition of each song is excellent, a definite breath of fresh air compared to the "neo-grunge" and "diet punk" that presently dominates the American music scene. The obvious cross-references are Slowdive, Cousteau and softer songs by Oasis, however, most songs have a much more sophisticated structure than most showgazer era efforts. Highly recommended for early 1990s Brit Pop fans.

3 out of 5 stars sounded better drunk.......2003-04-06

i bought this album on a whim while i was drunk one night and at first it sounded great (at the music store while i was drunk). the next morning though, the album left me a little....dissapointed. other reviewers had compared them to oasis, radiohead, and sigur ros (huh!!!!). i could see a bit of an oasis influence though, whether that is bad or good you can decide. the tracks i did enjoy (mildly) were ARE YOU THERE? and CAN'T GET YOU OUT OF MY MIND. i'll also comment on NORTHERN LIGHTS which was a peaceful song with kind of a minimalist attitude. overall it wasn't horrible but my money would've been better spent elsewhere or at the very least another round for me and my friends.

5 out of 5 stars Historically significant choral works, wonderfully performed.......2004-05-31

For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.

DANCE LIKE THE WIND presents works by eight African American composers from various generations, though they all emerged after the neo-classical period of non-discrimination. You'll hear loyalty to classic idioms like the spirituals and blues, but also elements of more recent genres like R&B, gospel and rap. Enclosed are excellent liner notes and biographical information.

The other three CDs are available as single titles, or in the boxed set entitled THE WITNESS COLLECTION which includes:

WHAT A MIGHTY GOD: Spirituals and Gospels for Chorus
GOT THE SAINT LOUIS BLUES: Classical Music in the Jazz Age
SKYWARD MY PEOPLE ROSE: Music of William Grant Still
    DANCE LIKE THE WIND

I'm sorry, but I have to correct myself. The last review I wrote was a long time ago, and Bill is an excellent vocalist. I dont know what I was thinking.

    Cheers!

    5 out of 5 stars Underrated.......2004-06-29

I'm usually not too into pop, but Einstein's Sister is a whole other story. I learned about them because Kerry Tucker, Einstein's lead guitarist, is my guitar teacher, and he hooked me up with some CDs, and they're absolutely great. Described as "neo-beatles" by Tucker, they have great songwriting, guitars, drums, and bass. The vocalist, Bill Douglas, is average, and sounds better on the album than he does live. The only complaint I have is that Bill's vocals sometimes don't fit the music; his vocals are very pop and sugar coated, so when he comes in on one of the more crunchy, power chord driven songs, it just doesn't mix. This is a rare occurance, however, and can be easily overlooked. This album is great, as is their other album Humble Creatures. I would recommend getting Learning Curves first, though, as it has more stand-out, grab your attention songs. This band deserves WAY more credit and fame than they get.

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked Power Pop Gem.......2004-05-28

Wow! I bought this CD at a discount, its one of the best I have ever heard. If the early Beatles, Elvis Costello and Squeeze had a love child band Einstein's Sister would be it. Now I've got to buy the rest of their CDs.
Very catchy hooks and melodies, lead vocals....great voice!

    5 out of 5 stars Lyrics!.......2002-05-14

If you are tired of all of the pop rap with simplistic lyrics and want to see what hip hop is really about ,I suggest picking this CD up as well as the other volumes.( 1-6 )Wait till you hear the album, its REAL not the materialistic stuff you hear most of the time now. Everybody who claims to be a Rapper or MC shows what they got and do it in a way it was meant to be. Grabbing the mic and spitting vicious lyrics off the head, battling, Live, etc. After the first listen you'll want to pick up a mic yourself. Check the rhymes by JUICE, Canibus, and Chino XL and compare them to what you here on the radio or see on the TV. These MC's Melt mics within 2 bars!

    4 out of 5 stars Straight heat---no fillers.......2001-09-17

I applaud the long-overdue commercial success of Hip Hop and I'll defend it to my death. But it's frustrating to me that really good music like this CD has will not reach the masses via radio and video outlets like the ridiculously horrible projects from Jadakiss, Eastsidaz, or Fabolous. From end to end, this is how lyrics are supposed to be kicked. I don't know when the tide will shift, if ever. But I'm glad that I have the CD and I applaud Sway and King Tech for not keeping it "gutter" or "gangsta", but keeping it Hip Hop.

    5 out of 5 stars Fo Sho~!!.......2001-08-30

Yo, yall definantly gotta peep this one out~!! Chino XL, Crooked I, Rass Kass, Planet Asia, and Juice blew it up. Right now after hearin this, I gotta say that Crooked I is the illest I ever heard. If him, Canibus, and Chino got together, the game would be over. But yo seriously, this album is madd tight. Check out Crooked I on Track 2. Den check out that joint wit Beanie, Bleek, and Chino. That jawn is blazin. Chino is too hot to handle. All the Canibus tracks were ill. Juice is a nice MC, yall gotta peep out his tracks. The Wu Tang tracks on here are aight. But listenin to that after Crooked I or Chino is like dunkin after Vince Carter. But Overall, it was madd blazin. This gotta be a "MUST GET" for all yall that like Lyricist, Battle MC's, and rap in general. Peep this now. GET IT~!! Ya Heard~!!

    5 out of 5 stars Freestyle Phenomenon.......2001-07-12

Listen to the most rediculous lyrics you've never heard before the whole rest of the world catches on. This is it right here. Compare the CROOKED I rhymes on Track 2 to any track on any CD that you or any of your friends own and Crooked will emerge victorious. CANIBUS might be able to challenge him but, oh, he's on Track 12. Then, compare the SUPERNATURAL freestyle (Track 14) to the WU TANG CLAN (Track 15) and you might be so surprised you wont beleive your own eyes. Volume 7 is the best hip-hop available right now. Do yourself a favor and pick up Volume 6 while you're at it. The world famous Wake Up Show with Sway and Tech! The Revolution is here.

    Album Description

There's a new Hip-Hop savior on the UK's streets, and his name is Derek Safo, that's Sway to you and me. The first person to win a MOBO Hip-Hop award without having an official release (those mix tapes beat most of the competition hands down), this man most definitely deserves the hype. Boldly waving his British flag, Sway draws lyrical inspiration from the world around him, studying domestic violence in 'Pretty Ugly Husband', unnecessary credit card debt in 'Flo' Fashion' and the nature of his own success on 'Little Derek'. His merging of different musical sources blend beautifully with his off-beat wit and irony. All City. 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Another Five Stars.......2007-05-07

This is one great CD. I just got it a couple of days ago, but I'm so psyched about it. This guy is absolutely great. I like how Sway incorporates more techno-ish sounding beats. My favorite track is Hype Boys, which I first heard while playing Need for Speed Carbon. My favorite thing about Sway is how he goes against the grain in every way possible. He's against the gangsta scene in rap (which quite frankly, I'm getting really sick of), and he's also against various other social problems within our society today. He also is the first rapper (at least in the UK) to outdo all of the contracted rappers with simple mixes (by simple, I mean not professionally contracted, altered, etc.). Great album. If you don't have it, get it!

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-03-11

I bought this CD and am amazed at how great it is. I can't stop listening to it. I'm american and I like most of sways music better than ours. For anyone who is a big fity cent or Game fan this is something you must buy!, you may never listen to fifty or game again. I promise every track is worth the money you have.

Hope sway keeps rapping this well and that he starts to collaborate with some american rappers. I think he could really change hip-hop for the better.

5 out of 5 stars A Modern Touch on British Urban Music.......2006-07-24

On the underground music labels of the UK, Sway proves his talent as not only a rapper, but an icon for British urban music, going out of his way to produce uplifting bright songs such as Little Derek, and keep to pop-cultured yet meaningful genres on garage-styled beats such as on the hit Flo' Fashion. With the mentioned songs and Products, Up Your Speed and On My Own as mentionables, and many good and decent songs to fill, this is truly worth the money you're spending. If you like this, please look-in to the diverse British urban scene, as there are many young artists with much talent.
