Less than two years after her mentor Gram Parson's death, Harris recorded her first album for Reprise. Pieces of the Sky inaugurated a suite of four mid-'70s albums and a surprising number of hits: her sound was clearly traditional, but also tastefully up-to-date with folk-rock and singer/songwriter styles, and her cyrstalline, febrile vocals took standards such as "Sweet Dreams" and "If I Could Only Win Your Love" back up the charts. Profile focuses on these early hits, and if it's too brief to capture all the best songs from four-star albums such as Elite Hotel, Luxury Liner, and Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town, it shows why Harris is important and why she continues to make adventurous country music. This is my 3rd copy of this wonderful album/CD. The original album had to make way for the world of CDs. The first CD was accidently broken and I replaced it the same day. I think it's one of her top 5 albums. I love them all.

Although Profile is a wonderful listening experience, it doesn't quite do justice to the early work of this amazing songbird. It draws heavily on the Pieces Of The Sky album with these great songs If I Could Only Win Your Love, Too Far Gone and Boulder To Birmingham, her moving elegy to Gram Parsons.

Other very beautiful songs include the gentle love ballad Sweet Dreams, the sad story song To Daddy, Making Believe, a yearning song of lost love, and the stirring Together Again. With her crystalline vocals, her expert phrasing and her tasteful choice of material, Emmylou has created a magnificent body of work.

Now for the omissions! When I Stop Dreaming from Luxury Liner is Emmylou at her best. Till I Gain Control Again and Satan's Jewel Crown from Elite Hotel are must haves. And the sublime My Songbird from Quarter Moon In A Ten Cent Town is one of the most spiritual songs she ever recorded.

In the light of this, I award this album only four stars, but Profile is still a great sample of her work from that time. I recommend that you get all of the aforementioned albums so as not to miss out on any of her gems.

This is a wonderful piece of art that I have owned since 1978 and am ordering again to give as a gift for someone. It delivers all of the pleasing elements that I look for in vocal music; a lovely female singing voice, beautifully crafted harmonies and tight instrumentals. Of course, it doesen't hurt that the songs performed are well chosen for my taste! Thank you for this classic.

This compilation includes three tracks from each of her first four albums, when her style was country-rock - very different from her music of the nineties and beyond. Apart from Hello stranger, all these tracks are available on the more recent double CD titled Anthology, which covers her whole career with Warner Reprise.

During these years (1975 to 1978), Emmylou had many hits on the American country charts including three solo number one hits, all cover versions and all included here. They were Together again (Buck Owens), Sweet dreams (Patsy Cline) and Two more bottles of wine (Delbert McClinton). Emmylou had many other big country hits with cover versions, including If I could only win your love (Louvin brothers) and You never can tell C'Est la vie (Chuck Berry).

Dolly Parton wrote To Daddy and recorded it for her 1976 album All I can do, but Emmylou heard it and recorded it herself. When Dolly heard Emmylou's version, she substituted another song for her own album, although Dolly's version was eventually released on a compilation CD many years later. Thus, Emmylou's version, included here, is the first one the public heard.

This is a great introduction to Emmylou's early music.

For anyone who wants to know what all the fuss was about when Emmylou Harris burst on the country scene three decades ago, it's all here in this compilation, which brings together twelve of her greatest early tracks. Her distinctive voice, part reed, part silver, full of emotion, and her interpretive range--she could convince in the most soulful ballad as well as the most rollicking of rockabilly--are in plentiful evidence.

Harris also had impeccable taste in material, and this CD is also illustrative as a retrospective of the best of country that stretches all the way back to its origins with the Carter Family's "Hello Stranger." Other highlights are the strongly feminist "One of These Days," and sweet covers of Patsy Cline's "Sweet Dreams" and Kitty Wells' "Making Believe," but there really isn't a dud in the bunch. Highly recommended for all of us who need to remember what country music was like at its best.

This features one of the three kings of old school rap Rob Base and his awesome partner who is known as DJ E-Z Rock. This album features two of the most popular songs in the eighties "It Takes Two" and "Joy and Pain". The other two kings of old school rap are Tone Loc and his awesome album "Loc-ed After Dark" and Maestro Fresh-Wes with his bass pumping ablbum "Symphony in Effect". This album is an absolute must, if you are a old school rap enthusiast!

The third installment in the Best Of House Music series features yet more twists and turns. This time Detroit is invited in. One of the most recognizable tracks at the time was included on this compilation-and rightfully so: "Strings of Life". And, of course you can't have Rhythm is Rhythm on the album without the other breakout sensation, Inner City: "Good Life was getting much airplay on Chicago radio, especially on the college stations. The included version of "Rock To The Beat" by Reese has that original Detroit Techno feel to it--before everything got 'distorted'. New York, New Jersey and Chicago influences are still evident, and there is even some representation another adopted home of House, London. "Voodoo Ray" is another track that stands the test of time because it's just that dancable!

This is a trip down memory lane that is just as enjoyable as the other two. You can't go wrong with this album...House Music All Night Long!

This is a very talented young man who has a great future ahead of him. It's hard to believe he's only in his twenties.

You can hear the influence of B.B. King in his playing and the liner notes confirm that B.B. was and is an inspiration. Make no mistake, this is no mere copycat. Kirk has learned from the masters - including Elmore James (check out "Worried Man Blues") - but he is definitely his own man.

The album is titled "Shades of Blue" and these shades range from songs written by Jimmy Dawkins, Jr. Wells and Magic Sam, to Percy Mayfield. However, These are not the usual covers. Someone certainly gave these choices some thought. There are also a couple of originals showing additional talent as a songwriter. On "Blues for Boo Boo" (his daughter - and I'd love to hear the story behind that nickname) we get a hint that he may also have some jazz in his repertoire. That hint shows up again in "Hip Hug Her".

The vocals are shared by Kim Wilson, along with his oh-so-fine harp, Janiva Magness and Finis Tasby and they give Kirk plenty of room to show his stuff. I particularly enjoyed the vocals of Finis Tasby whose voice and style seem to mesh especially well with Kirk's. I would have liked to have heard a couple more intrumentals. Maybe next time. Meanwhile, I highly recommend this CD and I hope there is more to come soon. Am I raving? Yes I am!

One last note to Riley: Your blues are in good hands!

In a world infatuated with hip hop, young African-American blues guitarists are a rare commodity. Rarer yet are those whose touch, tone, and vibe recall such Chicago blues greats as Buddy Guy, Magic Sam, and Otis Rush in their youth. Meet Kirk Fletcher: Still in his '20s, he plays with the conviction and authority of a seasoned vet, yet burns with a young man's fire. Fletcher favors toothy Strat tones, stinging bends, and flurries of tight, staccato riffs that seem to pop from his fretboard like little firecrackers. His touch is supple and his fingering fluid, yet his phrases never sound slick or contrived. Fletcher and his no-B.S. band cover blues classics by B.B. King, Willie Dixon, and Magic Sam; toss in some R&B (including Percy Mayfield's "The River's Invitation" and a funky take on Booker T. & the MG's "Hip Hug Her"); and cap things off with modern offerings from the likes of the Fabulous Thunderbirds' Kim Wilson. Fresh, vital blues.

Every now and when someone is able to emerge from the crowd of very good blues musicians out there and demonstrate that he has something special that distinguishes himself. I think that this is exactly the case of Kirk Fletcher. This album is a real gem that shouldn't be missed by any serious blues fan. With the help of veterans like Kim Wilson, Finis Tasby and Janiva Magness sharing vocal duties and the support of a fantastic band Mr. Fletcher delivers 17 strong blues songs that deserve to be listened. His guitar work is outstanding in every track and, even though very close to the style of the great players of the past, he brings something new into the mix. Fantastic tone control and fluid phrasing are, from my point of view, his main assets that together with is innovative way in creating music progression, make his sound fairly unique and very personal. Not a bad tune to be spotted, this is the classic CD that you would listen from start to finish and when it is over, well... you will play it again!

for me, i dig this joint for the overall rawness of it. i prefer the ones without the singers when he is on that MOP type of thing, which thankfully fills out most of this album. at a time where bad boy like stuff was infiltrating the radio stations, this was, and nowadays, is EVEN MORE, wonderfully refreshing.

True, they brought consciousness, but PRT also brought a style unlike anyone elses at the time(props to YZ also). Wise Intelligent had one of the dopest flows... If you claim to like REAL hip hop, or you wanna be an m.c., you need to check this out.

I first heard this on BET Hip-Hop and on Music Choice when they did the song "Rock Dis' Funky Joint". I never even heard none of this since I got into instantly. I knew I was never gon be a rap fan until I was ready to revisit that some more.

Anyway, as I was saying PRT have some of the best grooves on this album since the rappers of today put out theirs D'Nice, Main Source, Dana Dane, Whodini, Big Daddy Kane, Special Ed, Lord Finesse, Kwame the Boy Genius, The Jungle Brothers, The Pharcyde, Brand Nubian, Stetsasonic, and many others.

I recommend this album to those who wants to revisit the early days of hip-hop and now. There's no reason for you to miss out stuff like this. It'll take u far as it was since my parents raised me in all types of music at an early age.

    Once again we get a treat with this installment of the Best Of House Music series. This time from a New York/New Jersey point of view. On this compilation there only 2 Chicago artists + 1 Chicago producer. The other tracks are performed, produced or remixed by people in the NY/NJ circle (which is the great equalizer since club and radio DJs in Chicago were playing alot of NY/NJ tracks along with their home-grown tracks). The ones that really do it to me are "Work It To The Bone" and "Shake Your Body"--these are my "Jackin'" tracks. For the more melodic/spiritual side of the House I also go for "Love Is The Message" and "If You Should Need A Friend". Let me make a small confession concerning the latter song: I have an old mix, from 1989, recorded from a college radio station that has that song in it. I eventually found out who that was when I bought the album. Now, Blaze is one of the most acclaimed House groups, and they're still going strong!

    Listening to this album takes you to the time when House Music was everywhere in Chicago and everywhere it was it was phat!

    Im sure the New Yorkers and the New Jersey heads are feeling what I'm saying...if you are shouts out to you--you're represented really well on this album!!!

    First off if you wonder who would spent over twenty dollars on this LP, look no further I am one of them. I bought this CD used for 20 but every cent was well spent. Nine's debut LP is nothin less than mind-blowing! If you feel like me in that everything that dropped between 94-96 was the illest...this album imbodies all of that. One of my Favorites for stellar production & hardcore rhymes!!!

    Nine's debut album was "Nine Livez" (1995) a fourteen-track release. Nine's distinct gravelly voice and raw lyricism is a highlight of this release. Back before the days of mass downloading, and album's crafted by record companies, hungry rapper's like the Bronx's Nine provided unique album's like this one. Nine takes his listeners from hood to hood on "Ova Confident", and guides his audience through a grimy journey on "Red Rum". A raspy Nine lays down "Da Fundamentalz", and rips up "Hit Em Like That". Nine then brings the "champion style" on "Who U Won Test", stating that you never know what he's going to say next, which is true. Backed by some smooth production Nine shines on "Whatcha Want?", Nine kicks his feelings about what he wants backed by a nineties chorus. Nine advocates being a leader and not a follower on "Fo'Eva Blunted", another thugged out cut about making money and avoiding the police. Nine reps himself as the #1 contender on "Peel" and samples MC Shan on "The Cypha". Backed by some mellow production Nine keeps his audience entertained with some memorable lyrics and a humorous chorus on "Ahh S***". The "Everybody Won Heaven" (Redrum The Remix) works well. The beat to "Any Emcee" borrows from the Spinner's soul classic "Ill Be Around" , Nine delivers a creative cut sampling Rakim, repping himself with confidence on a head nodder. Nine closes this release off with the stellar "Tu Rasss". I recommend "Nine Livez", to those who enjoyed Nine's music back in the day and to people who enjoy slept on releases.

    First off, let me just say that this cd was hard to come by, seeing as the label that signed Nine back in the day went bankrupt, and as a result, all the prints were pulled from shelves and the only place you could really find it was in used music stores, or here online. And it was a little pricey, but regardless of the fact, this CD is completely worth it. The beats are ill, the rhymes flow smooth, and Nine is completely unique--not like all those other rappers out there trying so desperately to be different & stand out. I was jammin to this when it first came out in the 90's and I was completely hooked. I highly recommend this to any old-school hiphop head (esp. those that can appreciate the late 80's/early 90's old-school). This cd is one of the best cds, will always be a classic favorite. I give it 5 stars all across the board.

    Straight up, this album is amazing. No matter how many times I listen to it, it still gets better each time.

    Nine's debut album is crammed full of dirty, dirty, dark beats that perfectly accentuate Nine's grimy voice (not quite Rock from Heltah Skeltah, but rougher than Smoothe the Hustler). Anyways, the production is STELLAR. More importantly, Nine is a truly dope MC. Unfortunately, most people remember him for his uniquely raspy voice and this has overshadowed his lyrical ability. It's a shame, 'cause his flow is totally on point w/ the beats and his lyrics are original and memorable.

    Almost every track on this album (save 1 or 2) could be single, they're that good. I don't wanna separate any tracks from the rest (I love 'em all!) but the first single "Whutcha Want" is one of my favorite tracks ever. Also, I have to give mad props to Nine for the track "Hit 'em Like Dis," which features MC Froggy Frog, who is really Nine rhyming like a frog and trading rhymes with himself. Most people don't get this track when I play it for them, but those few who do appreciate how creative and funny it is...ahh 1995, when MC's could still have fun w/ Hip-Hop and not care what people thought.

    Although this album seems kinda dark and grimy, trust me when I say that IT'S THE PERFECT STONER ALBUM. After the short intro, you'll be sold as soon as you hear "Ova Confident."

    Bottom Line: This album is so good it's infectious. Nine is one Hip-Hop most unappreciated MC's and he'll always be one of my favorites. 5 Stars, peace.

    The gravelly voiced Nine (so called because the number had a special and almost mysterious way of cropping up in his life) was a Funkmaster Flex protege revered by those who place an equal focus on the beats and production - in addition to lyrical dexterity of an emcees delivery. With a respectful nod towards the old school with a liberal peppering of MC Shan and Run DMC samples, Nine eschewed the grittier, harder edged street style, typical of New York emcees of the period.

    Lead single "Watchuwant" with its jeep-riding video, its follow up, the Rakim-sampling "Any Emcee" and "The Cypha" are clearly the best cuts on the album. Overall, the album is well produced and because Nine never "blew up" commercially, the deleted CD is hard to find and commands a high second hand price.

    Circa 1990, this LP is incredibly hard to find. Somehow, someway I got my hands on a copy a few months ago and I was blown away. Special Ed is straight, old-school dope.

    Until I heard this, the only time I had heard Ed was on the classic track "Crooklyn" by the Crooklyn Dodgers (Buckshot, Masta Ace, Special Ed & produced by Q-Tip). Even then I loved what I heard - but Ed's material is very hard to come by. Since then I have aquired his debut LP, "Youngest in Charge" and to be blunt I still like "Legal" more. While Ed's rhyming is slightly better on "Youngest," he comes just as nice on "Legal" combined with much better production. If you ask me, his delivery & story-telling abilities are second only to the untouchable Slick Rick.

    If you like really true old-school, cop his first LP. Personally, I'm more inclined to the new school flavor (1990-1997), that's why this album is still my favorite Special Ed LP.

    Anyone who loves old-school (1987-1997) Hip-Hop, needs at least ONE Special Ed album in their collection. My vote is for "Legal."

    Bottom Line: Funky beats + a supremely dope MC = An amazing, slept-on album. 5 stars, peace.

    NOT QUITE AS GOOD AS YOUNGEST IN CHARGE BUT THATS ONLY BECAUSE THATS MY FAV CD OF ALL TIME..IF SPECIAL ED WOULD HAVE STUCK WITH TELLIN THOSE PHAT STORIES HE MIGHT BE STILL IN DA GAME..THIS ALBUM IS GREAT AL THE WAY THROUGH..NICE STORIES, NICE BEATS NOT TOO COMPLICATED..DEFINITELY A NICE ALBUM TO OWN IF OYU LIKE OLD SCHOOL..MOST OF THESE SONGS ARE UNHEARD OF..WILL BECOME MORE OF A CLASSIC IN THE FUTURE

    special ed sounds like slick rick in this album. the flow, the narrative style, only on some tracks he really sounds...him. i bought the album coz i just want to check it out coz i was really impressed with his "I got it made" song. and well, i really wanna know if "I'm Magnifecent" is truly magnificent.(well....its 2000s man) like a lot of old school joints, its bouncy, and has enough scratches. all in all, its good. mabuhay ang noypi.
