5 out of 5 stars GREAT GUITAR WORK.......2007-02-16

Ant was the former guitar man on early Genesis and his compositions are a mix of barroque and progressive style. For Genesis fans I highly recommend Private Parts and Pieces 1,2 4 and his Archive Collection parts 1&2.

1 out of 5 stars howard slag - chump of all media.......2007-04-26

well, well...most copies of this are for sale at .01...still too steep for this drek...like the rest of the 'howard slag experience' he recycles other people's stuff and puts his name on it...thank jah for sat radio...it swallowed him whole and he has now...disappeared!!!

4 out of 5 stars 'Private Parts:The Album'-Various Artists (Warner Brothers).......2004-11-26

Beside 'Beavis&Butthead Do America',this is like the ONLY other movie soundtrack I've really liked in the past several years. The Howard Stern story is outrageously funny.I got a big kick out of hearing the several breif dialogue bits taken from the movie. As for the tunes,I totally loved the Type O Negative track where they pair off w/Ozzy covering the Status Quo gem "Pictures Of Matchstick Men",Green Day covering The Kink's "Tired Of Waiting For You" and Porno For Pyro's new cut "Hard Charger".The Ben Stern Megamix is a work of near genius. There are also some summertime hard rock favorites here by Deep Purple,Ted Nugent,AC/DC and Van Halen.A nice find.

3 out of 5 stars Decent metal collection..........2004-11-12

Decent metal collection mixing today's music (Rob Zombie,Marilyn Manson, etc) with yesterday's (Ramones,AC/DC, etc.) Highlights are The Red Hot Chili Peppers hooking up with some rap dude and Green Day doing a carbon copy of The Kinks classic "Tired Of Waiting For You". Lowlights are Ozzy teaming up with Type O Negative with a horrendous cover of Status Quo's "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" and Howard Stern teaming up with The Dust Brothers...just awful.

4 out of 5 stars Where's Beetlejuice?.......2003-09-22

This might not be the best soundtrack in the world, but it does succeed in three ways. One, it has good OLD rock like "Van Halen", "Cheap Trick", and "Deep Purple". Two, it has good NEW rock like "Rob Zombie", "Porno For Pyros", and "Type O Negative" with Ozzy. Three, and most importantly, it has clips from the movie. They're not all funny, but any fan of the movie, or show should enjoy them. Of course in typical "Howard Stern" fashion, the cd sleeve has almost nude chicks on it. There's alot of things to like about "Private parts".

5 out of 5 stars TOO HOT FOR RADIO.......2003-06-28

First came the book, then this album, then the movie. The King Of All Media at his most hilarious. The soundtrack to the 1968 movie "Bonnie and Clyde" was like this album. Excerpts of dialogue from the movie. We start with some dialogue spoken by Paul Giamatti's character,Kenny "Pig Virus or Vomit" Rushton in the movie's final scene(the end credits are rolling during this scene). How dare he say "Howard Stern can kiss my ass in hell!"! This album features great recordings by Ozzy Osbourne,Ted Nugent,Van Halen,Green Day and the Ramones. There's TORTURED MAN performed by Stern and the Dust Brothers. Many of these dialogue excerpts are definitely too hot for radio airplay. There would be bleeps very often as required by the FCC. THE BEN STERN MEGAMIX is really silly. That Howard's father in "club" form. There are live versions of AC-DC's YOU SHOOK ME ALL NIGHT LONG and Cheap Trick's I WANT YOU TO WANT ME. I laughed so hard when I first heard the dialogue excerpts. One funny bone-tickler is where Giamatti angrily labeled Stern as "the motherf---ing antichrist". Totally awesome!

    4 out of 5 stars Worth hearing........2007-01-06

Hugo Friedhofer wrote scores for a LOT of films! His work is always first-class, if a bit dated to the 50s -- but I LIKE 50s stuff so it works for me. I got interested in Friedhofer after hearing his filmscore for "Never So Few" a big production studio WWII flick starring Frank Sinatra. When I began researching Friedhofer, this CD was about all I could find of his works so I gave it a try. Classical fans will enjoy the first half but not the second segment (which sort of sounds like jazzy old porno-film music). Still, The first half is lengthy enough to make this a worthwhile purchase. How can I best describe it? This is difficult beyond saying that it's typically Hollywood stuff, tastefully conveyed, (Conductor Graunke has his own much-accomplished, Munich-based orchestra), containg a few pleasant surprises and mostly melodic with obvious "50s-suspense" moments. A bit akin to Previn's Hollywood renderings. I can't recommend it flat out for the classical music collector but I highly recommend it to Hollywood buffs. I enjoyed it very much and re-listen to it occassionally.

    1. The Park
    2. The Backyard

    Album Description

Centered around the mesmerizing voice of Robert Ashley, this early version (released on LP by Lovely Music in 1979) of The Park and The Backyard is a masterpiece in its simplicity of form and in the purity and intensity of its effect on the listener. These two pieces were later to become the opening and closing segments of the seven part opera for television, Perfect Lives. "When Private Parts first hit the scene, everyone I knew had The Park memorized within a month and quoted from it constantly. Ashley's series of non-sequitur images, fusing into a picture so lifelike that it never quite added up, brought a mystery into music theater that smashed our previous conceptions of the genre." — Kyle Gann

5 out of 5 stars an amazing record.......2004-07-01

this is now one of my all-time favorite records. really amazing. it has reassured me that true brilliance does exist. i can't say enough amazing things about this record. i have trouble with much of ashley's other work that i've heard - much of it unfortunately grates on my nerves - but this one has completely won me over.

5 out of 5 stars You need this CD.......2001-02-23

If you somehow made it this far, you should be buying this CD. It is unlike anything you have ever heard and will ever hear. It will take permanent residence in your mind and soul. Yes, it is Robert Ashley's very soft voice telling a story (in two parts) with a steady tabla beat (by "Kris") and very pretty piano and electric piano playing in the background performed by "Blue" Gene Tyrrany. How can this be so amazing? It just is.

5 out of 5 stars Meditative, not Mushy.......1999-12-17

Robert Ashley speaks softly over the sound of tabla, piano, polymoog and clavinet. This is mediative music of the same quality as Brian Eno or David Behrman. It soothes without stupifying.

5 out of 5 stars An early version of the TV video opera 'Perfect Lives'.......1999-08-06

'Private Parts (The Record)' is an earlier version of the opening and closing episodes, 'The Park' and 'The Backyard', from Ashleys' TV video-opera, 'Perfect Lives'. The disc combines the compelling cocktail-piano style of "Blue" Gene Tyranny, the wonderful tabla playing of Kris, and Ashley's yearning narrative. Hear about "R's" f***d-up life on the road of motels and cheap bars; chill with "Isolde's" musings in the twilight of her backyard...

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars pieces of beautiful brilliance.......2003-12-20

In "Back To The Pavilion", certain themes from Ant's previous works are revisited. As "The Geese & The Ghost" has the six-part "Henry: Portraits From Tudor Times", this album begins with the five-part "Scottish Suite". School buddy Mike Rutherford plays bass on parts 1 ("Salmon Leap") and 4 ("Amorphous, Cadaverous, And Nebulous") of the suite. Also in the suite, the song "Reaper" (from the first "Private Parts & Pieces") resurfaces on parts 2 ("Parting Thistle") and 3 ("Electric Reaper"). "Lindsay" is simply a wonderful piano piece. I would describe "K2" as being a quiet ambient track. "Postlude: End Of The Season" is a short but sweet melody on acoustic guitar. I would also describe "Heavens" as having an ambient quality to it. Another wonderful acoustic melody in "Spring Meeting". "Romany's Aria" is a short, backwards piece. I could go on and on about each track on the album, but you'll probably fall asleep before you're finished reading this review! Ha ha ha! But all in all: absolutely brilliant. So if you enjoy listening to absolutely gorgeous music, I suggest you pick up "Back To The Pavilion" as soon as possible. You won't regret it!

Please note: this is a portion of the same review I gave for the "Two For One" set which also features "Private Parts & Pieces III: Antiques". Both albums are brilliant!

      5 out of 5 stars Arguably Ant's Best.......2002-08-24

From start to finish, Back to the Pavillion is, like the best of Anthony Phillip's work, an escape for the listener, a minor journey into enchanted whimsical realms. Although Geese and the Ghost (actually named after two sounds on a keyboard being used at the time) is typically considered his finest effort, PP&P 2 deserves similiar recognition, with this being among his most creative recordings (the playing is uniformally superior throughout Ant's body of music). One can dim the lights on a cool Fall evening, put this disc on, and find a very private and satisfying retreat into one's self. As is the case with Phillip's discs in general, there are hardly any 'stand-out' tracks, with others occupying a more secondary position within the contect of the album; rather, the recording functions more as a seamless whole, with each ensuing track taking the listener just a bit farther down the path traveled while enjoying the music. Along with 'Geese', this is a must have for those interested in Ant's work, as well as fans of early Genesis.

4 out of 5 stars A great "continuation" of PPP I.......1999-10-25

I think of PPP II as a continuation of PPP I (unlike the others in the PPP series). It is for the most part the same quality of material, with much instrumental acoustic tunes, but a little more electronic than the first. If you liked PPP I, you will probably like II.

3 out of 5 stars Private Parts 2, A treat for Phillips fans.......1999-01-21

Ant left Genesis to go solo and up until Private Parts and Pieces 2, I wondered why. Though the album is wrought with an irritating abundance of acoustic work, there are some rather ambitious electric works as well. I found it to be a little thick but overall a step in the right direction. A little more of the heavy rock stuff would not have hurt this album as Phillips is really an amazing guitarist.

4 out of 5 stars Alternates acoustic crispness with synthesizer wash.......2000-08-07

Although originally released in 1987 on the now defunct 'Audion' recording label, this is one of Mr. Phillips' more consistently interesting collections of original modern instrumental music. As mentioned in the title of this article, the material on this disk does a better than average job of showcasing both Anthony's acoustic prowess, as well as his masterful composition and performance skills on various synthesizers. Like many of his other albums in the 'Private Parts & Pieces' series, this collection of 'bits', or sonic ideas, is best heard in one complete sitting, so that the relationship of the individual pieces can be heard as a total 'idea', and not just disconnected parts. One small warning: Don't let the high pitched droning of the "Ice Flight" suite of songs that kicks off the album put you off; "Beach Runner", "End of the Affair", "Elevenses" and Goodbye Serenade" are all wonderful acoustic compositions, and the synthesizer cuts "Vanishing Streets - Slow Waves, Soft Stars" are sublimely excellent.
