I had forgotten how good this one was, especially for it's time. Very happy that I have it on cd now.

4 out of 5 stars Maiden hits their stride; 4.5 stars.......2007-05-24

1983's Piece Of Mind is the album on which Iron Maiden's "classic" lineup came together. With the addition of drummer Nicko Mcbrain Maiden finally stabilized and would go on to record four consecutive albums with the same group of musicians starting with this, their fourth LP.

Whether you love or hate Iron Maiden, you have to admit that the musicmanship is superb. The twin guitar team of Dave Murray and Adrian Smith serves up crunchy rhythms, harmonized melodies, and searing back-to-back solos all with equal aplomb. Murray's firey shred is perfectly counter-balanced by Smith's more melodic approach. Steve Harris' bass is inventive and solid, often coming across more like a third guitar than a bass. Soaring over the top of it all is vocalist Bruce Dickinson, coming across with an operatic vocal style that fits in perfectly with the band's progressive leanings. The new drummer, Nicko Mcbrain, proves himself quite able, although in truth I preferred previous skinsman Clive Burr. Everybody performs at their peak on this album, and these performances are captured on tape by legendary producer Martin Birch. The recording is very good, quite crisp with all the instruments nicely balanced. It's very dry, however, lacking the ambience that usually characterises a Birch recording. I have to say that these remasters are awful. Birch's excellent production work is completely ruined. See if you can find the original CD releases.

This album contains more songs than most of Maiden's other '80s releases, and most of them are superb. Maiden is a band with several excellent songwriters and they truly hit their stride on this album. "Revelations" is a great masterpiece with gentle verses and a brutal chorus, "The Trooper" is blazing rocker with a hard-driving gallop rhythm, "Still Life" is positively spooky, and "Where Eagles Dare" is pure metal mayhem. The album ends on a high note with the great epic "To Tame A Land", based on the science fiction series Dune. Most of the other tracks are also excellent but I have to deduct half a star for the horribly lame "Quest For Fire".

Don't miss out on this great metal masterpiece. If they'd simply left out "Quest For Fire" and gone with just eight songs (like most other Maiden records) this would be a perfect five star album. Pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars 1st From The Classic Lineup.......2007-04-22

Exit drummer Clive Burr (who did a fantastic job on the 1st 3 records), enter Nicko McBrain. Now all the stars have been aligned. The greatest metal lineup of the 80's is now ready for business. This is the 1st of 4 (5 including Live After Death) albums from the Dickinson/Harris/Murray/Smith/McBrain lineup, and my God is it a good one.

Once again, basically every song is a highlight, with singles "Flight of Icarus" and "The Trooper" leading the show, and with the epic album closer "To Tame a Land" (based on the Sci-Fi book Dune, and I believe is one of Maiden's most underrated songs) ending the album on an awesome note. This is also the 1st Maiden album where singer Bruce Dickinson writes something on his own. "Revelations", Dickinson's 1st masterpiece, is a fantastic heavy-to-soft song which greatly helps the flow of the album.

Maiden are in full gallop here. They would continue to gallop on through the rest of the 80's after this one.

Stick around, people, the next one is even better...

4 out of 5 stars This Is The Band's Best Release.......2007-04-15

Every one who was into Metal when this came out played this into uselessness. Remember, this was before CD's existed. The band STILL plays 3 cuts off of this when they tour. Where Eagles Dare, Flight of Icarus, Die With Your Boots On and Trooper are all classics. This, along with Ozzy's "Diary Of A Madman" and Judas Priest's "Screaming For Vengeance" altered the musical landscape. It's an important piece of history.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best maiden has to offer.......2007-04-05

Many a maiden fan will tell you that this is the best maiden cd out there. well i disagree, but i can understand why they would think this. here is why i dont think its the best album maiden has to offer. In my opinion, where as my two favorite albums, Numbers and seventh son are strong throughout the entirety of the cd, i feel piece of mind kind of ends on a week note. where eagles dare is a thunderous and powerful introduction song, and a great welcoming boom from new drummer Nicko Mcbrain. Revelations is an instant classic and is still played live to this day. Flight of icarus is another strong entry which for some reason steve harris doesnt like it and refuses to play it live. die with your boots on is a straight forward rocker that does just that rocks. and then there is the trooper. I belive I said the same thing about wrathchild in my killers review, but ill say it again for this song. Worth the cost of the cd for this song alone. still life is the last great song on the album. slower paced but cool as hell. then this is where the album is week. quest for fire, sun and steel (Conan?) and to tame a land although are decent, i dont think they are anywhere near Maidens other premium stuff, and to tame a land as an epic doesnt come close to Hallowed, Seventh son or Rhyme standards. UP THE IRONS!!!

Chonda Pierce is fantastic -- you can't beat actually seeing her live, however, her humor and the pure enjoyment of listening to her is clearly trasmitted on her CD. This is a great gift idea to give to Christians and non-Christians. Once they get hooked listening to her comedy routine they'll keep listening to her Christian Testimony; it's a great way to get your skeptical friends and acquaintances to listen!

Have just listened to it for the 100th time probably as it was one of my first metal/hard rock records in the middle of the 80s. If you are new to Iron maiden, just listen to it and enjoy, if you are as much of an IM fan as me, just listen to the S. Harris's bass parts for a change -- incredible. A true masterpiece, buy it.

I have, over the Last close to 20 years, worn out at least one vinyl and countless cassetts of this metal masterpiece. A must have for anyone who considers themself a metal lover. My 14 year old son heard for the first on vinyl and was hooked. Nikko, drives it home with some of the most solid precussion work ever heard. Great lyrics from Harris and Dickinson especially revelations. If you are new to metal, or just somehow missed out on this monument, this will change your play list.

4 out of 5 stars POWERFUL DEBUT FROM UNDERRATED EMCEE.......2005-01-27

This album is a southern classic, hands down. Tela's debut album really catapulted him into the arena as being one of the south's best lyricists, no question. On top of that, this album has a nice splash of HIP HOP, which isn't found in most southern rap (e.g. the first song "Twisted," which lifts Run DMC's classic beat from "Rock Box"). Tela's lyrics here are thought provoking, introspective, pimped out, playalistic, and everything in between. He has faltered verbally over time (which is partially to blame on the lackluster and bandwagon production that's plagued his later albums), but you'll be utterly amazed at the kid with his first time at bat! I really give this album 4 1/2 stars, taking off 1/2 a star for the flawed trappings that usually occur in rap albums (e.g. the featured artist Nola's uninspiring verbal garbage - luckily she's not on many tracks). These shortcomings don't affect the superb quality of the album, however. Unless you use the "buy used CDs" feature on Amazon.com, you're going to be hard pressed to find this rare gem - it's out of print! If you're a fan of southern rap, the mid-late '90s SuaveHouse sound, or an overall hip hop fan, Tela's "PIECE OF MIND" will blow you away! A GREAT PURCHASE! PEACE!

5 out of 5 stars A great rap/ hip hop album from "da dingy dirty south"!!!.......1999-07-11

Unlike a lot of southern artists, Tela is able to walk the thin line between hip hop and rap. Dont get it twisted, this album is more southern flavored than anything but you will see some hip hop references in there. Check out "Strange" with Crime Boss and the magnificent lyricism of Mr. Mike, who is a very highly underrated rap emcee. The songs are on point ranging from ballin to pimpin women. While these subjects may be tiring to many, Tela flips them in a way that will make you realize how creative and original he is. And I know all of the hardcore hip hop headz will love it when on the intro to "Twistedd" Tela states "Let's rock. Dedicated to the kings of hip hop....thank you." (Know who he's talking about?)

2 out of 5 stars It had maybe 2 good songs it gets tiresome.......1999-06-11

All the songs sound the same sho-nuff and tired of balling are decent but the rest of the album is lame. It's not worth buying.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Hamlet sound track - Patrick Doyle.......2006-03-10

I spent a lot of time trying to get hold of this CD but I must say I am mildly disappointed. I thought Patrick Doyle's music for Branagh's Henry V was brilliant and that was why I was determined to obtain this sound track as well. Henry V is not Hamlet in terms of theme and plot but I think the music here tends to be too low key and lacking in drive, unlike Henry V. It is still very good in places and clearly the work of an excellent composer, but not quite up to Doyle's previous standard.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful masterpiece!!.......2002-02-22

Patrick Doyle has truly composed an awesome piece of work. The score is so well done that you can feel the emotion coming through the music alone. This is by far my favorite soundtrack and I listen to it quite often.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collaborations.......2001-06-12

Doyle fans are aware that he collaborates regularly with actor/director, Kenneth Brannagh. With the Hamlet score, he again writes powerful complementary music which also stands alone as worthy to be performed in concert. I would be interested to hear lengthier tracks such as accompanied the lengthy, but indeed beautiful and patient, movie. (The only mistake was Billy Crystal in the movie. I thought Robin Williams did fine work.) Although, I confess, this is my least listened to in my soundtrack collection, I do enjoy it, and believe it deserves accolades.

5 out of 5 stars Patrick Doyle's finest score.......2000-06-26

This is certainly one of my top 3 Patrick Doyle scores and a towering achievement. The score unfolds like a great romantic symphony encompassing several moods from serenity and inner peace ("In Pace"), to violence and lush gothic undertones ("The Ghost", "Now, could I drink hot blood"), and a finaly sense of joyous celebration ("Fanfare", "What Players are they?"). After listening constantly to Mr. Doyle's scores for "Henry V", "Much ado about nothing" and "Frankenstein", I thought he could never top such achievements and somehow he did: "Hamlet" is a masterpiece of thematic inventiveness and dramatic power. The playing is wonderful and the engineering is very clear, taking full advantage of Air Lyndhurst's glorious acoustics. If you are a fan of british classical music or a Shakespeare fan (or even better, a fan of Patrick Doyle), don't pass up this CD. Great film music. No: great music. Period!

5 out of 5 stars Basically, I Love It.......2005-10-27

This album is such a welcome return to Robin's signature style...all except the last track, (a bit too dissonant for me) I very much enjoy playing it often, and am so glad I finally bought it. Thanks Robin!!

5 out of 5 stars The greatest of the "New Wave" bands.......2004-11-10

I saw Robin Lane and the Chartbusters at the Cellar Door in Washington DC right after the first album was released and they slayed everyone there. Robin was a LOT cuter in person than on the album cover (she had shoulder-length STRAIGHT hair) and she exuded a tremendous amount of stage prescence. I was so impressed and glad to be there.

I just ordered the "new" album today. Unfortunately, Amazon has rated this album "limited availablity" even thought it's less than a year old!!! I hope I can find it somewhere if they can't. If anyone wants to burn me a copy, I'd be more than grateful. They can charge me whatever they like. I'm on Pay Pal so I'm sure we could work something out.

I agree that "Imitation Life" should be released on CD. It's killer stuff (I have it on cassette only) and long for a digital release. The first album is one of my favorite albums and I really like "Catbird Seat" too.

Robin is great and I'd love to see her again in person. I've loved her ever since I heard her haunting backup vocals on Neil Young's "Round and Round" in 1969!!! Awesome artist.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Come Back of 2003.......2004-02-20

I first fell in love with Robin Lane and the Chartbusters shortly after the release of this wonderfully unique band's self-titled debut album (during the early 1980s glory days of MTV). How time flies, no? Since those early days, I have mourned the Chartbuster's departure from the music mainstream. While I still cherish my vinyl copies of Chartbuster releases, I have long lamented the fact that their music had all but disappeared from our musical lexicon since the demise of the turntable. Robin and her band stood head and shoulders above the pack back in the day ... and now, to my utter delight, they do not disappoint with their lastest "reunion" release, PIECE OF MIND. In fact, like a good cheese or a fine wine, the passage of time has only made the Chartbuster's sound richer and sweeter on the pallatte. Collector's Choice Music recently re-released the Chartbuster's debut album ... and I quickly snapped up MY copy. But sadly, their smashing follow-up, IMITATION LIFE, is still unavailable in digital format. Fortunately for us, one gem from that wonderful recording, "Idiot", has been re-recorded by the band and appears on PIECE OF MIND. Thank you!! This CD is a must-have for anyone who remembers Robin and her compatriots as fondly as I do. I truly hope that this return effort spawns a new Chartbusters era.

3 out of 5 stars A tame comeback.......2003-11-24

This reunion CD is a mix of previously-unrecorded material from the band's heyday 20 years ago and new songs. It feels like having old friends back again, and Robin is still in fine voice. When I heard the opening notes of the first song, and the re-recorded "Idiot", huge smiles came to my face.

In the end, though, the smiles are due to nostalgia - this was a great band that should have been at the top of the charts, but that never made it, and I miss them. But you can't turn time back 20 years, and however good they may still be live (I haven't heard them since 1980), whatever hype you may read, no matter how good the band feels about producing their own CD this time around (their energy and brilliant guitar interplay wasn't properly captured in the 80's recordings but is simply gone, along with youth and one of the original guitarists, in 2003), there's nothing here that rises above the mediocre, and much that sinks below it. The sound is often a pleasant reminder of the band that once was, but the lyrics range from forgettable to banal to embarrassingly weak. "The Letter" makes me wince, and "Psychotic Disorders" makes me absolutely cringe - if I wanted sophomoric humor, Blink 182 does it better. There's nothing here that would stand on its own merits and be interesting to someone who wasn't already a fan of Robin's music two decades ago (I was a rabid one). I'd hoped for something new, perhaps a more modern sound and more mature lyrical sensibilities to compensate for the loss of youth. But even Asa Brebner's R. Crumb-like cartoons - the other thing on this CD that brought a smile to my face - haven't changed since "Imitation Life" 22 years ago. This is a fun reunion, but without any marked artistic growth.

Sometimes a middle-aged musician makes a comeback with a real edge to it. Returning with a completely new sound is probably rare (Marianne Faithfull and perhaps Janis Ian would be examples of one-hit wonders who came back years later with serious well-done music performed in new styles). But people like Neil Young (Freedom, 1989), Lou Reed (New York, 1989), and Patti Smith (Gone Again, 1996) came back with flair and vision and courage over two decades after their debuts, with lyrics surpassing the work of their youth. You won't find that here. Hearing this band back together left me with some warm fuzzies, despite weak songwriting, and that may be reason enough for the average Robin Lane fan to make a purchase. I have really mixed feelings about this CD - I'm so thrilled to have this great band back together, and I'd go hear them live in a heartbeat, but I find it hard to get excited about any of the songs here. On a human level, I salute these old friends and bandmates for getting back together to play and record music they love - that's what life should be about. But as much as I love Robin, I can't recommend this CD except to other die-hard fans, and I'm not sure even they won't be a bit disappointed. If you don't get your expectations too high though, you'll probably enjoy hearing the return of Robin Lane and the Chartbusters.

5 out of 5 stars Piece of a mind, and a great mind !.......2004-07-27

Following an icon album like The number of the beast is not easy but, with Piece of mind, Iron Maiden succeed and produced an album, even though that doesn't have classics like Number of the beast, Run to the hills or Hallowed be thy name, proved to be more complete and, as the years go by, simply better than TNOTB. This album also features the arrival of drummer Nicko McBrain who completes marvelously the rhythm sections with his mate the God Steve Harris.

1-Where eagles dare : Greatest drum intro ever. Welcome Mr. McBrain. Bruce Dickinson voice is over the edge and there's a great instrumental part. Awesome overture. 9,5/10
2-Revelations : A very progressive song in the style of Iron Maiden. The more you listen to it the more you like it. The live version on Live After Death is something else. 9,5/10
3-Flight of Icarus : Introduced as the 1st single of the album. This very good and catchy song was meant to be one of the top songs on the album...and she's not. That shows how much Piece of mind is a strong album. 9/10
4-Die with your boots on : Killer rock song. Great chorus and solo. When you listen to this song you understand why Iron Maiden is so good. 9,5/10
5-The Trooper : Even though I heard this song way too many times in my life, it's still a classic of metal. Everything in this song is perfect. 10/10
6-Still life : One of Iron Maiden's hidden treasures. A smoother song with a killer chorus. Every Maiden song is different but you can always recognise the style underneath it. With Still life, it's different, there is a new structure and a new feel. 9,5/10
7-Quest for fire : This song was probably destined to be a filler (remember the B-sides on the vinyl records ?). Well, if it is, they missed the target. This is a very good song that deserves to be on the album. 8,5/10
8-Sun and steel : Same as above. A very catchy chorus. 8,5/10
9-To tame a land : The Steve Harris epic that you can find on almost every Maiden album. With the years we can say that Harris wrote this song in preparation for his best effort ever, Rime of the ancient mariner. Just perfect ! 10/10

Not as known as TNOTB, Piece of mind is proving, with the years, to be a better album than his predecessor. A definite must have for every metal fan.

4 out of 5 stars PIECE OF MIND!!!.......2003-08-10

It's a good album, but not a masterpiece as some say. The tracks from 1 to 5 and 9 are great, but I think that 6,7 and 8 are a bit weak, why? In Still life is simply that there are songs about nightmares better than this, in Quest for fire I didin't like how Bruce sings the first lines, even the middle section is ok... I don't like Sun and steel, that's all.
Well, this album deserves a try, but I think Powerslave, Somewhere in time and Seventh son of a seventh son are better.

5 out of 5 stars Ummm.......2003-10-12

This album was one that lifted my lyrical contents up a notch. Song's like "Success", "Let it Rain", "U Can't Tell". Briliant, Realistic, Encouraging, Spiritual and Raw.

I foremost, would like to give shout outs to one of the producer on their i was feeling the most. Slicse Tee, who wasn't mention but would definitely be recognized as a wizard behind the productions.......... too.

Jazze Pha came through too. With 2 hit songs that were recognized deeply within the streets. "Tired of Ballin" (which we all are sometimes) and "Sho Nuff"

T-Mix likewise "Strange". Which is the title of a song that was knocking my 15's out the box. I had to reposter and reconnect wise everyday. U !elohssa. One

Shadik, I'm outya hair.

Cop this !

5 out of 5 stars Tela's first album!.......2003-07-14

"Piece of Mind" is Tela's debut album and it was recorded while he was on Suave House (later he moved to Rap-A-Lot Records). And like all the albums by this label, it's a classic. The production is on a whole new level, beats that you'll hear nowhere else (Handled by Jazze Pha and Mo-A-Suave productions). They have an R&B feel to them, but don't get the wrong impression - it's down-south rap at the highest level. And so is Tela's rapping. His style is different, he's gota very smooth voice and his flow is unstopable. On some songs he's laid back and on others his rapper has a hard edge. Lyrically he'also much better than most rappers in the game. In fact, he reminds in so many ways of his label-mates, the Memphis rap pioneers Eightball & MJG. Yet he remains special in his own way. On the album you get impressive guest appearences by all Suave House artists - Crime Boss, Mr. Mike, O.C., Eightball, MJG (on one of the albums many highlights "Sho Nuff") and all the rest of them. It's an album you can play from the beginning to the end without skipping even one track. On this remastered edition you get two bonus songs, but you can only play the second one ("Riders" which is one of the best). The first one is recorded in a very poor quality, you can barely hear it (and it's a just a different version of track # 3 Tired of Ballin'). Bottom line - one of the best albums to come out from the South. It's one of those albums that just make you feel good, it really relaxes you. It's some playa... with a gangsta twist. Don't sleep on Tela, he always comes out with much heat!

Album Description

The Hand of Doom Orchestra triumphantly performs Piece of Mind in its epic entirety. The power of classical music has never been lost on Iron Maiden. On this album, violins, woodwinds, cello, and classical guitar combine to create immense and rich instrumental renditions of "Revelations" and "The Trooper." The Hand of Doom Orchestra creates a symphonic masterpiece that retains Iron Maiden's timeless vitality.

3 out of 5 stars Up the Irons! Er, violins..........2007-03-13

I was a little nervous about purchasing this CD after reading the previous review, but after passing it up a few times, I decided to take the plunge. I have to say that I am an avid Iron Maiden fan, and have been for 20 years. With that disclaimer, I will say that this cd may not appeal to someone who has a passing interest in Maiden, or the album Piece of Mind. After firing up the CD for the first time, I listened with apprehension to the opening of the first song "Where Eagles Dare". The intro begins with horns and drums, and I thought, "eh, this is okay, at best". And, then, the violins kicked in. Wow! They managed to soar, and to so closely mimic Bruce's voice, that I was happy to buy the cd, if only for that song alone. I do agree with the previous reviewer regarding some of the flaws of the album, but I felt that, overall, the performances of several tracks really shone, including Still Life, The Trooper, Quest for Fire.

2 out of 5 stars A Big Let Down.......2007-02-04

I'm not sure what the requirements are for an orchestra, but the word makes me think of a stage full of performers playing many instruments. Apparently the Hand of Doom orchestra is only 6 people. And some of the instruments aren't musical, but rather synthesizers or other sound generators.
I started up The Trooper and the first thing that stood out was the fake horns. Don't get me wrong, I like synthesizers and many kinds of electronic music, but who wants to hear a generic electronic horn in the middle of a symphony performance of great battle music? As far as I know, the only place a keyboard has succeeded in metal was Rainbow in the Dark, and it has never succeeded in an orchestra or any classical music.
Still Life and Quest for Fire are much better because the non-mechanical instruments are much less frequent. Unfortunately they did show up here and there, bringing a sudden chill through the otherwise graceful performances.

Overall I am disappointed. In many ways this album was close to achieving a grander, more immersive environment. The lack of more performers isn't such a big detriment, they play well and blend together nicely. But substituting instruments they don't have with electronics was a very bad choice. I can't help but be reminded of background music from Lords of the Realm and other mid-90's video game soundtracks.
I bought this along with Iron Maiden's Piece of Mind, but I would recommend putting your money towards another album instead.
