5 out of 5 stars Overlooked Album.......2003-10-05

I'm not a regular reviewer, but seeing this album with no comments was a disappointment to me. I stumbled upon it and it is fantastic. The most raw, emotional, gut wrenching lyrics I've ever heard. Maybe because its not very commercial and hard to put a category label on it, Johnstown is overlooked, but if you are looking for a pleasant surprise, give it a try.

4 out of 5 stars beautiful sounds from Canada.......2002-10-22

Oh Susanna's 1999 release, Johnstown, brings us back in time to a place we've never been. Suzie Ungerleider's voice and lyrics are at once gritty and mystical. And addictive I think. I snobbishly deduct a point for the simple guitar riffs; any of you may disagree. I expected slightly more from a band that actually THANKS people for the use of their antique guitars in the liner notes. ( A very cool move, I thought.) That said, this album is a must have if you like a bit of Canadian rock/folk. The music is nostalgic, and because of that, comforting, yet the stories and lyrics challenge the listener to take a trip with the band to some tough, sad times. Looking for a new songstress with whom to fall in love? I suspect you may find love in this one. And if anyone knows the story of Johnstown by all means share. Very intriguing.

5 out of 5 stars etched in blood and fire.......2001-01-20

This album sneaks up, grabs you by the throat and won't let go. Suzie is a brilliant songwriter and has a beatiful voice that literally throbs with passion and raw power. This is her first full length cd and for my money should have been given serious consideration for top 10 lists for 1999.

Her music evokes another time. She is doing some kind of archetypal 19th century heartland music - quite probably from a place that never really existed. The stories are harsh and forbidding and the vocals match the stories.

If you like truly original artists run out and buy this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Don't You Wanna Be Free-Johnstown's Struggles for Liberation.......2007-06-19

This record is not about the great Johnstown Flood of the 1880's and the flood if anything may stand metaphorically for flowing away from something. Though rooted in old folk and country traditions, the songs deal with the very present tense need to break free. Canadian folk/alt.country singer Suzie Ungerleider delivers twelve well crafted musings on the need to get away from abusive relationships, murderous criminal acts, physical locations, and just plain old bad love affairs. The music is spare but tastefully embellished with some fine lap steel and Hawaiian hollow-neck guitar playing courtesy of Blue Rodeo's Bob Egan. Oh Susanna sings with a distinctive country twang not unlike her fellow Canadian country-woman, Neko Case. This is a smart and reflective album, but like the girl running in the cover illustration, each song is about urgent movement. The advice of these folk tunes is to walk, run, take a train, a horse, an automobile, and just get out of whatever bad scene one finds onself in. Stark and not without consequences, the choice to break free comes with moral and emotional costs which range from eternal punishment to uncertainty about where one is going to end up. A deceptively complex record, this one is on my list of the Best Canadian Rock Albums, since it forces one to think while listening to some enjoyable sounding traditional country and folk melodies. A real gem!
