Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

I had a 33 rpm album of Elly Ameling singing Schubert lieder accompanied by piano and clarinet at times. It was one of my all time favorite albums so I have been disappointed that I have not been able to find it anywhere on CD.

Now I can just buy this excellent collection. So much music in one place! Since I confess that I am far from an expert on the rest of her records, I look forward to hearing her sing many other styles and composers.

I think it is silly to criticize her for not singing Wagner, for example, since her version of many songs, especially lieder, are nothing short of sublime. I would like to hear how many Wagnerians sing Schubert or Mozart.

I doubt if they could approach the skill and soul with which Elly Ameling sings lieder.

To speak as briefly as possible about this superb collection from an equally superb singer, what can I say but that Ms Ameling possessed a voice that shone with radiant warmth and star-like shimmer? And unlike many another light lyric soprano, Elly Ameling was possessed of a very high standard of musicianship, considerable intelligence, and a sort of immediate charm that captivates the listener.

So many of her recordings have still to be released on CD, but this 5CD-set goes some way towards remedying the situation. The repertoire spans a wide variety - French mèlodies, Lieder, light-hearted "sentimental" songs, Bach, etc. - and in each piece, Ms Ameling shows that quality of pearl-like beauty. It is a beauty which is also extremely pretty - a beauty of voice that is never overbearing and over-ripe, but perfectly blossoming upon the tree of inspiration.

I recommend this set unequivocally. It truly is sheer delight.

Elly Ameling held the quiet stage for recitals of great artistry and dignity for several decades and sadly most of the enormously successful CDs of her long career output are now unavailable. For those who have little access to the documentation of this very special artist, this box set is a must. It is a compilation of many of her recordings with differing accompanists, conductors, orchestras and composers. And while not all of the choices for inclusion here would be considered her greatest moments, there are enough works that sustain the warm memories of the little Dutch hausfrau who quietly and simply paid homage to composers with her clear and intelligent musicianship and radiant voice.

Ameling was known to schedule recitals of Schubert cycles and songs and in the afterglow of her performance answer the demand for curtain calls with additional Schubert melodies: she gifted her audience with the dignity of honoring a composer's works by maintaining the focus on that composer rather than milk the audience with the usual encore applause-getting favorites. And special moments such as quietly and pensively strolling through the orchestra during the Mahler 4th symphony to arrive at front stage, unapplauded, just in time for the opening line of her singing - those simple homage to composers and collaborators made her selfless manner endearing to audiences.

Despite the fact that Ameling's voice was on the small side she was always able to muster the projection to carry her message solidly in context with an orchestra. Yes, other more famous singers have recorded Ravel's quintessentially French SHEHERAZADE, but few have the perfection of diction and aura of mystery that Ameling maintained. Whether singing with piano or orchestra, or interpreting Bach, Mozart, Handel, and Vivaldi with the same degree of involvement as Brahms and Schumann and Schubert, Elly Ameling spanned a career that engendered passionate commitment from her fans. And this boxed set is a pocket full of memories to be treasured. Buy it before this too becomes unavailable. Grady Harp, May 05

Treasures from a Treasure.

Ameling, one of the world's most beloved recitalists is captured here in a 5 CD collection offering some of her most beautiful recordings of song. While we are used to her perfection in songs of Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Faure and Hahn, an added joy is her "pop" side, tackling - without a whiff of pretension, Porter, Kern, Gershwin, Ellington, et al.

What an absolute joy it is listening to this amazing artist sing these songs with an almost uncanny natural ease. There is no resorting to a "pop" voice and yet most of these pop standards songs sound as though they could have been written for her. Clean attacks, sometimes a bit of the pop technique of hanging on to a consonant longer than a classical artist normally would shows an appreciation and understanding of the style. Still, there is never once a compromise of her vocal beauty.

I like the way the songs have been arranged for her voice in that she sort of sings them clean, unaffected in the first half and then lets loose and kinda "swings" with it adding embellishments but never really changing her voice (Price, von Stade and other favorite singers of mine seem to have always added a breathy quality to much of their crossover material.)

Ameling doesn't resort to trying to "let her hair down" or get down and dirty, but rather the honest with which she approaches every one of these songs shows how much she enjoys singing them and her style is as refreshing as stumbling onto a cool spring on a sweltering summer's afternoon. A wonderful surprise.

As I had the privilige of hearing this outstanding Lied-singer during her long career in Holland and being the proud possessor of almost all her recordings, I cannot but fully agree with the professional and joyful review of Mr. Robert Holliston from Victoria, B.C. Canada.
Yes, it is unbelievable that of about the 150 recordings Mrs. Ameling made during her long career (for the greater part of course on the 'oldfashioned' LP's, as well as the innumerable Dutch live-recorded radio-concerts), so few CD's have been released.
Speaking of tradition: it was the page-turner of the Wigmore Hall in London who told Mrs. Ameling after her first recital in this hall, that she reminded him of Elisabeth Schumann. (And he certainly didn't mean her looks only!)
For those who are eager to hear her singing Ravel's Shéhérazade (just one example of stirring imagination combined with her Art of Singing) I can tell you that Philips released a 2-box CD of this work in 1999, combined with Debussy's La Damoiselle élue and a compilation of French mélodies, i.e. Debussy, Fauré, Duparc, Satie. One of the gems is Caplet's Le Corbeau et le Renard which even make children, who know the fables of La Fontaine, revel in the singing of the quarrelsome birds....
Her brilliant accompanyist is Rudolf Jansen. Let us cherish great artists in their art!

These two CDs contain a great selection of classical, operatic and folk songs in English, German and Italian by the famous contralto (1912 - 1953). Highlights on the first CD include What Is Life from Orfeo et Euridice, Art Thou Troubled from Rodelina, Woe Unto Them and O Rest In The Lord from Elijah and the traditional song Blow The Wind Southerly.

My personal favorites appear on the second CD. The first is the divine Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes, the Ben Jonson poem, which is a most mystical and transcending listening experience. The buoyant Stuttering Lovers is most catchy and appealing. Both of the aforementioned are sung to the piano accompaniment of pianist Phyllis Spurr.

Backed by the London Philharmonic, Ferrier renders splendid versions of Father Of Heaven from Judas Maccabaeus and O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings To Zion from The Messiah. These are truly awesome, the first one slow and somber, the second joyous and triumphant. Other highlights on this second CD include He Was Despised from The Messiah and All Is Fulfilled from St John Passion by Bach.

The informative CD booklet contains black and white photographs, a short biography in English, French and German, plus complete information on the recording of the tracks: composers, dates, venues, conductors and musicians. Kathleen Ferrier was a unique vocalist who made a magnficent contribution to classical and folk music.

Kathleen Ferrier has one of the most instantly recognizable voices in music. And it's a voice that might take you time to love. As an eight year old I heard her version of Blow the Wind Southerly many times on British radio and intensely disliked it. I wasn't sure if it was a man or a woman, adult or child, such is the nature of her contralto. But over the years, especially hearing Ferrier sing Handel and Mahler, I've come to treasure her recordings alongside Callas, Sutherland, Flagstad and Baker. This two disc set contains performances which are about 45-55 years old. Many favourites are here especially the folk songs and selections from Bach, Handel and Mahler. The sound quality is excellent. The sleeve notes mention that Ferrier's vocal delivery may sound old fashioned to our ears. But her remarkable voice which stirs one's deepest emotions, transcends any thought of quaintness or mannerism. She is, quite simply, the greatest contralto ever. This selection will have you seeking out her other recordings on Amazon.com. And it might also lead you to Virginia Rodrigues, a Brazilian contralto with a superb voice who, like Ferrier, makes everything she sings, her own.

I often associate certain albums with seasons and weather. Springsteen's BORN TO RUN will always remain an essential summertime album....while The Velvet Underground's self-titled album is the perfect album for rainy winter nights.

The Absinthe album, A GOOD DAY TO DIE, is one that receives continous plays when autumn and winter begin to show their seasons. Mind you, this album could be played at any time of the year and would be equally as wonderful. Still, the haunting themes of death, bittersweet childhood memories and regret do make this a fine soundtrack for days and nights of relentless wind and rain. There is not a bad song on this album...and it is an album that contains many great songs. Even days after having listened to this album, I continue to find songs such as "Messed Up Likes of Us" or "It Don't Bother Me" still ringing in my head. Much like the demons that Springsteen excorcised with his DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN album, BoDean Sammy Llanas does much of the same with this album. Majestic and gracefully played as this album is, it is not an emotionally easy album to digest...it cuts right to the heart and gut, a quality that makes it all the greater in my book. Right now it's December 30, 2005...and the rain is pouring down and the wind is whipping around like mad on this night. While may not be a good day to die, it is the perfect night to play an album as fine as A GOOD DAY TO DIE. And that's exactly what I plan to do as soon as I finish this review. If one is brave enough to come face to face with the demons that make up both one's childhood ("Neighborhood Bully" or "A Good Day to Die" or "It Don't Bother Me"), as well as the demons that often plague adulthood ("Messed Up Likes of Us"), then you owe it to yourself to get a hold of this album!
And I'd be willing to bet that it will become the soundtrack to haunted nights such as the one during which this was written...

5 out of 5 stars Don't Pass This One By!!!.......2003-12-19

Being a huge BoDeans fan from years past, I had to give this solo effort by Sam Llanas a try. I was prepared to be disappointed, but was instead overwhelmed by the beauty and dark intensity of this album. The songs obviously chronical a tragic event in Sam's life (the death of his brother), but also draw from other childhood memories as well. A lot of artists would fail at this type of material, as it leaves a lot of room to come off sounding trite, but Sam executes such a mix of powerfull lyrics and superb musical composition that the album is nothing short of a masterpiece. It has been a staple in my CD player for weeks and shows no sign of aging poorly. It is one of my best music purchases this year, and I have made many. Very highly recommended.

It's by far the best collection of material that Llanas, or the BoDeans for that matter, has put together. One of my fave BD CD's is "Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams", but Sammy's writing here is his best to date. It is further enhanced artistically through the musical magic of this Absinthe group.These great musicians are locked together in deep solid grooves, and you quickly sink into their incredible quicksand of sound and beauty. Absinthe reflects and compliments the intent and context of Sammy's especially heart felt and moving song stories. Definitely a musical milestone.

You simply have to be in the right mood for this disc; if not you wont enjoy it. If you are in a soulful mood and wish to enter a sort of dream-state where childhood memories can come rushing back to you, this is the disc.

Personally, I like to pour a beer and just sit with this disc playing. It has a way to pull from the fog some really important memories that had for too long been buried under less meaningful things.

That said, I cannot say I "love" this disc as I do all the BoDeans albums. The BoDeans tend to be a little more upbeat and I can listen to their music pretty much anytime. Here, Sam Llanas has cut some powerful songs that you have to be ready for. If your are, you'll really enjoy it. Worth owning for those times you need it!

A beautiful album. When one chooses to listen to A Good Day To Die, it's necessary to be ready to accept it. Just as many of the best movies have unhappy or tragic endings, this album ends up being one of the best in my collection. There is nothing to hold you back from becoming one with this record. Deep tones, mystic lyrics, haunting melodies. It's just yummy.

If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.

This cd was a genuine delight. The music, plus really good liner notes, was an education in itself. I knew little about this group of composer- arrangers and the time in which they lived. "Fat White Woman Whom Nobody Loves" may not have been meant as humorous, but it was anyway. This has got to be one of the KS'S all-time best.

    I bought this somewhat based on the glowing reviews others had given it. It's not bad, but not that fantastic either. I've heard much better versions of most of the music on it. Not quite worth the price.

    While the musical arrangements are tolerably adequate and the orchestra is fair, this is some of the worst choral singing I've ever heard. They obviously have no concept of tuning and couldn't stay on pitch if their lives depended on it. I can't believe this is supposed to be a professional recording and the director didn't correct these glaring errors. I picked up this CD at an after-Christmas sale at 75% off, and I will forever mourn the loss of my $5.00. I guess it might suffice as a mediocre white elephant gift, but I pity whomever may be forced to listen to it. I suggest you not waste your money. If it's classical Christmas carols you want, search for more well-known and trustworthy music groups like the London Philharmonic and the Cambridge Singers.

    I have to agree with the other reviewers that this is a very enjoyable CD of traditional carols. It contains a huge selection of songs. I was afraid that they might all sound the same, but to me, the orchestration and vocals are varied and well done. I bought this for Christmas, and it's one of my favorite new Christmas CDs in recent memory.

    I loved the "50 Most Loved Piano Classics," so I decided to try another "50 Most Loved" collection, this time the Christmas Carols album. These are classics in their own right as the arrangements and orchestrations are enchantingly beautiful and the choir vocals provide perfect point-counterpoint. I hate to admit this, but I'll probably still be listening to this CD long after Christmas is over. There's a cinematic soundtrack quality that I find haunting. Have a great holiday with this one!
