Amazon.com essential recording
Family Tree ranks as singer/songwriter Tom Chapin's best overall children's release. Chapin applies a grand musical scheme, integrating horns, well-recorded large ensembles, and more, which results in a mix that will wow parents and kids alike. He prefers narrative-oriented songs, and here does a wonderful job on a father-son relationship in "Shovelling" and includes a touching lullaby-like farewell to friends on "Together Tomorrow." Unlike lots of children's music, in which a simple vibe is struck and then stuck with throughout, this collection varies with each song, often using humor to ease kids into a realm where they can grasp some kernel of truth about themselves and their parents. His take on the "Big Rock Candy Mountain" is inventive (and shrewdly avoids the liquor-guzzling references in the original), and there's a politically progressive angle to the entire recording. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Family Tree.......2007-04-01
This CD is wonderful. We have seen Tom in concert and can't get enough of kid "rockin" with all of his music, but this one is a definate favorite. I have bought it for my youngest son, my grandchildren and am now ordering one for my friends' children. The kids put it on without prompting and turn it up so loud that we sing as loud as we can and no-one can tell how badly off key we are. The only thing better than Toms' music is a live concert.
Heads Up for Confused Grandparents!.......2006-10-30
When my daughter was young I found this terrific (then taped) music. It was a tremendous relief from the treacle and repetitious stuff that made me want to drive off the road. Even her older brother thought it was fun. Fast forward to today and my granddaughter is in line for her own copy of Family Tree. My son was both touched and delighted as he recalled long trips home in the dark with the funny and sweet songs that had his parents singing and made his sister stop whining. Give it as a gift, save it for yourself, but know that Chapin's kind and gentle view of the what children should know combined with his sense of humor is just what you'd like your precious grandchildren to hear about the world in which they will grow up.
All time favorite!.......2006-05-21
This is my all time favorite children's album - and having been a kindergarten / pre-school teacher for 20+ years, that is saying a lot! The title song is always a favorite, but every song on here is great! My class is doing two songs from this CD for our kindergarten graduation tomorrow ("Family Tree" and "Together Tomorrow") and the kids wanted to do several others. I had to draw the line somewhere! My own children (now ages 20, 11 and 9) still love this CD, too. This is really a winner! Strongly recommend!
We love this CD!.......2004-12-11
We got it from the library and now I am buying it. It is catchy, fun and socially aware. Oh yeah, and the kids think it is great too. We sing it together and have so much fun. It's a great pick.
Great for kids from toddler to pre-teen!.......2004-09-20
Early on, we found Tom Chapin when we (adults) got tired of other kids' artists. Back then, our child was 2, and our friends kids were 6 and 10, and we all loved singing the songs, and even seeing Tom in concert. Great family fun!
Later, our girls continued to love Chapin's songs and concerts, and we make his concerts a family trip every summer, even with our (now) teen. These are songs kids can grow up with!
Our family favorites include Family Tree (this album), anything about Bruno (two other albums), and many more. Our elder daughter now loves some of his adult songs, especially A Study's About To Begin.

I Like This Album As Well as Moon Boat because they are both more nostalgic than Family Tree or Billy The Squid. I also Like Both Albums because they help me bring back memories of the time when on PBS They had the Blue P Head Logo with The Bell String Tune and the male announcer saying This Is PBS.

The second Tom Chapin in my collection (1st=Around the World) I got this at the library and fell in love with the Wheel of the Water song, plus Picnic of the World. Almost all the songs are good! Tom Chapin is great b/c his songs aren't annoying like many kid songs, and they have layers of nuance that will make my 2-year-old enjoy them for many years to come. Definitely worth having.

Album Description
Imagination Movers combine pop, hip-hop, rock and world music with educational themes for kids and their parents. The Movers sing about healthy eating, separation anxiety, sibling rivalry and other topics that relate to being a little kid, but the group's musical style has a decidedly grownup groove. Think Mr.. Rogers meets the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Regardless of how you describe it, Movers music is catchy stuff that parents and children will want to listen to over and over again!
The Movers' new disc, "Calling All Movers," features the band's trademark blend of kid-friendly themes and sophisticated rock and hip-hop music. "Please and Thank You" is a Caribbean-touched homage to every parent's three favorite words. The call-and-response jam "What's in the Fridge" is evidence of the Movers' continued obsession with snack food. And "First Day of School" is a sentimental look at a milestone from a child's point of view. These and 12 other new Movers tunes will be favorites in family CD players for years to come.

What kid doesn't love to dance? What kid doesn't love to sing? This CD is a must for all kids! Calling All Movers! Get this CD! You will enjoy it and play it over and over again. Can't wait to see the Imaginatio Movers on tour!
The Movers Rock!.......2007-03-13
My 2-year-old loves these guys! Ever since the first time she saw them on Playhouse Disney, they have been her favorite. And now they're mine! All of their songs are loaded with good messages and I love all the musical influences. Each song is different and great in its own way. I just cannot say enough good things about the Movers, and especially this album. Check out "Looking Out the Window" (one of my favorites) and "First Day of School" (my daughter's favorite, along with "I Want My Mommy" from "Good Ideas"). We also bought the Movers' "Good Ideas" album and love that as well (although personally, I prefer this one!). :-)
Fun for Parents, too!.......2007-02-18
This music is GREAT. We are from New Orleans, but unfortunately never attended an Imagination Movers performance! I am kicking myself now. My sons, ages 4 and 2, request this music every time we get in the car. And I enjoy listening and singing along, too. It's like good adult music with kid lyrics. Can't beat it! Thanks you guys.
Think outside the box!.......2005-11-16
This guys are great! Kids love them! Parents can tune out the lyrics and the music will take you back to your college days! I've dropped my kids off at school and continued to listen without them in the car! Baton Rouge, LA

Songs in my head!.......2005-09-30
This was a great new purchase. I was taking my 2 and 4 year old on a 12 hour car ride and we needed some new music. We all really enjoyed this CD!
Great music for kids of all ages..........2004-09-20
Early on, we found Tom Chapin when we (adults) got tired of other kids' artists. Back then, our child was 2, and our friends' kids were 6 and 10, and we all loved singing the songs, and even seeing Tom in concert. Great family fun!
Later, our girls continued to love Chapin's songs and concerts, and we make his concerts a family trip every summer, even with our (now) teen. Now our neices are enjoying our Tom Chapin CDs, and our kids still don't mind hearing them again. These are songs kids can grow up with!
Our family favorites include Family Tree, anything about Bruno (one on this album), and many more. Don't Play With Bruno is a particular hit with gifted kids...
Our elder daughter now loves some of Tom Chapin's adult songs, especially A Study's About To Begin.
Fun for the Entire Family!.......2003-10-11
We ALL love this CD! The baby, our toddler, and our six year old - and even Mom and Dad! A great blend of silly and sweet, always fun to sing and sure to make even the crankiest member of the family laugh. An absolute STAPLE for the car - we listen to this more than any other CD we own and never seem to get tired of it. I think your family will love it too.
buy this cd and every other one tom has recorded.......2002-09-19
This is an absolute must-hear for children from two to 82. Tom Chapin presents a combination of clever and creative lyrics with a gentle, happy feeling. Kids of all will relate to the images expressed in his music. His music sends the best kinds of messages, that we all are responsible for making the earth a more friendly, fun and healthy place for everyone. If a kid can't find something to love anywhere else, he or she will in Tom's music. If you haven't added it to your music library, do so now!!!
Great Listening For Young and Old Alike.......2001-12-06
This is a superior children's cd. A mix of great music and vocals telling a series of compeling 2-3 minute story songs. Well I think it is just superb!
Parents, teachers, librarians all can use this cd to not only enjoy great music and lyrics but to explore simple and complex story themes, plots, characters with sometimes serious humour and grace. The story songs cover a variety of topics you will enjoy to include ecology, holidays, being an "outsider", etc. The songs collectively and individually stand the test of multiple listens! I highly recommend this as a starter for the music of Tom Chapin.
In addition to the Whale Song mentioned above add "Neat Mess" (a really hit home tune) and "I'm Going Down to the Library"....
Tom Chapin does for children's stories in song what his brother Harry did for many of the rest of us!

Against the cynical, post-punk backdrop of the early Thatcher and Reagan era, Culture Club's debut release Kissing to Be Clever was as refreshing as a scoop of gelato in a heatwave. These were the innocent days when Boy George could still declare he'd rather "have a cup of tea than sex," well before he hurtled to the brink of near self-destruction. Several of the cuts are still amazingly fresh and easily convey the winning charisma that transformed Boy George and his band into a pop icon. Songs like "I'll tumble 4 ya" and "Boy-Boy-I'm the Boy" seem tailor-made for the frontman's smooth-sliding tenor, while Mikey Craig's bass grooves pump with dance-til-you-drop Hi NRG. Although relatively brief (the original LP had one more cut than the CD release), the album stylistically hops like a Mexican jumping bean from disco funk to rhumba to reggae and contains obvious filler material. But the gender-bender flair perfected by Boy George announced a unique style that helped define the decade. --Thomas May

Its a great album, and The Boy sounds really sweet. Its a must have for anyone that loves BOY GEORGE.
Some songs are really great .......2005-12-21
This album is one of my favourites.I think that Kissing To Be Clever is the best album by Culture Club.I got it from my grandma to my name day and I was surprised.
Do You Really Want To Hurt Me is my favourite song at this album.I think that this song is very good.It is melodical and peaceful.Murder Rap Trap feat.Captain Crucial is my second favourite song. The song sounds funny with voice of Captain Crucial.
Love Is Cold and Love Twist are also my favourite songs, because they are melodical and quite fast. The other songs are good too.You must own this album,if you're an old Culture Club fan.
A nearly perfect debut, sexy blue-eyed soul circa 1982!.......2005-07-16
Don't bother with the other reviewers who dismissed CC's brilliant debut album - along with COLOUR BY NUMBERS, it's their strongest, sexiest, and just plain addictive album ever! The writing, the production, the vocals, the groove, the design - they all really take me back to my early teen years circa 1982, a simpler, happier time when CC were charting a bold new world in pop music & beyond - once you hear WHITE BOY, I'M AFRAID OF ME, DO YOU REALLY?, TIME, and many more, you won't be able to get them out of you head...and trust me, they really get a party started right! BOY himself sounds naive, in love, and confident all at once - and who can forget the delicious shock of seeing him dominate early MTV with a string of cool videos that launched them around the globe? BONUS tracks here are a nice addition - hard to believe the first CD issue of this LP never even included TIME?! *I think it was recorded later as a stop/gap single, which explains its late inclusion. No matter, KISSING TO BE CLEVER is a bargain with stunning REMASTERED sound and BONUS cuts you won't find anywhere else - a must-have addition to any true CC fan's collection!
a spotty debut.......2005-05-21
As a Culture Club fan from the very begining, it pains me to admit this album has not aged well at all. The singles are great, of course. "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" is one of the greatest singles of all time, an undeniable classic, as is "Time ( Clock of the Heart)". There might be one or two more songs here that hold up to repeated listening, but that's about it. The remainder are either underdeveloped or just plain bad. So: You've got your three hit singles ( the third being "I'll Tumble 4 Ya", which is only SLIGHTLY less annoying than "Karma Chameleon")all available on any greatest hits collection. You've got "White Boys Can't Control It" which is kinda cool, with its Spaghetti Western guitar riffs, horns and harmonica. And you've got your lurid purple album cover. That just about sums up Kissing to Be Clever.
Culture Club's '82 debut,remastered with bonus tracks.......2005-04-14
Here,on Culture Club's 1982 debut originally released on the Epic label,is a remastering with a few bonus tracks which did not appear on the original ten-track line-up(at least in America). George Alan O'Dowd aka Boy George delivers his great vocals on the hits DO YOU REALLY WANT TO HURT ME?,I'LL TUMBLE 4 YA(probably inspired by Prince who uses homonym numbers and single letters in place of words) and TIME(CLOCK OF THE HEART). Years later,Virgin bought the rights to Culture Club's Epic releases. The band's follow-up,COLOUR BY NUMBERS,released in the fall of 1983,was a megahit compared to this album.

Great kids songs.......2006-08-24
As a kid, I loved this album and some of the first I ever sang in front of people were "Bye Bye Dodo" and "The Ghost of Bleak House." Brings some of us back to our days as young children.
Great CD.......2005-12-20
This CD is great for kids. I used to listen to this CD when I was a kid, and I loved it. I still love it. The only thing was that a always got scared when something jumped out, like in "the ghost of bleak house". I still love this CD, and i put it onto my MP3 player.
Above are my son's comments. I am much older and I still absolutely love these songs, along with the other all time great CDs of Tom Chapin - Family Tree, and Moonboat. I would also give 4.99 stars to Zagzig, Great Big Fun, In My Home Town. Children of all ages will treasure these long after they have children of their own.
Followup to T. Siliano's review.......2005-02-21
I had the exact same experience as she did, and after poking around a bit, I found that this disc is actually "Zig Zag" (see track listing elsewhere on Amazon.) Beats me how Chapin's release company made such a mistake (only the 2nd time I've seen this in 20 years of CD collecting), but things didn't turn out so bad, as the songs contained are actually very witty and fun, just I've come to expect from every Tom Chapin release.
what is going on?.......2005-01-03
I Love Tom Chapin. My son has 3 other CD's of his...My husband and I enjoy the music as much as our child does. I am not sure what happened with Billy the Squid? The play list is on the back of the CD case and on the CD as well, but the CD plays entirely different songs all together! This is a dissapointment to me! They are all Tom Chapin songs, but they do not match the play list. The same is true of the playlist on Amazon...try it out and listen. It does not look like the CD is copied...very confused Tom Chapin fan.
My Son Begs for "Billy the Squid" Constantly!.......2003-04-17
My 3-year-old son and I have an hour-long commute after work, so good music is a must. The songs on this CD are wonderful, starting with the very first ("Big Words") which makes us want to dance right in the car, if we could. The songs alternate between catchy toe-tappers to softer, more melodic tunes, to some that tell a story ("The Missing Parade" and "Ghost of Bleak House"). There are two songs we don't care for ("You'll be Sorry" and "Sore Loser"), but the excellence of all the others makes this definitely worth the money.

A Happy CD.......2005-05-07
I think this CD is excellent. It has 15 interesting songs. The song I like on this CD is called "Cookin' in the Kitchen." This song is by Jon Cobert and Tom Chapin. They run around the kitchen and talk about food. They talk about carrots, tomatoes, and another kinds of vegetables. These songs are not all alike.
My classmates and I enjoyed listening to these songs. One of my favorite songs is "Make Good Noise" and Michael Mark was singing with Tom. My other favorite songs are "I Love to Play the Kazoo" and "Cookin' in the Kitchen." It sounds like it's a lot of instruments. I think the slow songs are nice too. "I Need a Lullaby" is a lovely sleepy-time song.
I wonder where Tom gets all of these great songs from. Tom surely did a great job! How can he make
up like 200 songs. Every song he makes I love.
Your Best Dishyra
Another Great TC album!.......2004-07-09
We LOVE Tom Chapin... Our big boys (now ages 9 & 11) still love his clever songs, and mom and dad can enjoy the songs equally, if not more, than the kids! (Very rare with the usual "kids" music albums.) Tom's albums are all "5's" in our book... and we've listened to TONS of children's albums since our big boys were infants. Our newest family member, 2-year-old Quinn, also loves TC's music. His songs are smart, sweet, thoughtful, and often environmentally conscience. Just what our little ones should be listening to!
This newest album; the songs grow on us every day! The kid's favorites are Yo-Yo's Ma; Making Good Noise, and Putting On A Show. Mom's favorites are always the sweet, meloncholy tunes that celebrate the fleeting magic of childhood: On this album, my two favorites are "Sing Me The Story of Your Day," and "I Need A Lullabye."
If you're new to Tom Chapin's music ... I'd highly recommend "Family Tree" as a first album to start with (it's our hands-down favorite of all the TC albums,) -- and then enjoy all the other albums after that... you can't go wrong with any of them :-)
Another good effort by Tom Chapin.......2004-03-17
Hot off the success of his "Greatest Hits" compilation, This Pretty Planet, and In My Hometown, Tom Chapin has released another good effort.
TRACKS
The CD starts off well with "Making Good Noise", a catchy sing-along, dance-along track.
Next up is "Bang On The Pan", a rhythmic track with a reggae sound.
"Putting On A Show" is a story-song, which once again follows the adventures of Shirley, Sue, and Bruno, this time in a stage production of "Annie".
After this follows "I Love To Play The Kazoo", a mainly orchestral track.
"You're Not The Boss Of My Brain" is basically a song about... well, you can probably figure it out from the title.
This is followed up by "Cookin' In The Kitchen", a track dedicated to cooking and the great treats that come out of that excellent room known as the kitchen.
In "The All-Purpose Carol", Tom salutes the different traditions observed during the holiday season.
After this is another catchy track, "Singalong, Longasing", which is a mirror song, a round, and a family song all in one. You will probably have fun playing this song-game with your family! :)
"The Hampton String Quartet" is the aforementioned group playing an orchestral arrangement of Tom Chapin's classic "This Pretty Planet".
"Yo Yo's Ma" is a funny song about the famous cellist and how he (supposedly) became a star.
"My B-A-N-J-O" is a great tribute to the banjo and its sound.
In "A Day At Camp Decibel", Tom puts lyrics to ten famous bugle calls, describing a hectic day at a summer camp.
Perhaps one of the best songs on the album, "Sing Me The Story Of Your Day", is a touching ballad dedicated to the relationships between friends, as well as parents and children.
"I Need A Lullaby" continues the soft, quiet feel. It's a lullaby to anybody who needs it.
Just in case the kids were getting bored, Tom finishes off the album with "This Song Is My Homework", a humorous, rock-n-roll track about procrastination and the problems that it entails.
DISC REVIEW
Tom does a good job on his guitar and banjo. He also brought in some pretty talented kids to do backup vocals for him. As far as backup instrumentation goes, however, this disc is not as strong as In My Hometown. Also, the case art and inserts look a bit bland. But that is probably to be expected, as that album was released under the Sony Wonder label, and this one is under the much smaller and less professional Gadfly label.
WRAPUP
Tom Chapin comes through with his trademark lyrics and sound, perfect for a growing family. Although not as good as In My Hometown, which I consider to be his best CD, it will improve a long, boring car ride by engaging the kids and allowing them to sing along. In Making Good Noise, Tom Chapin proves once again why he won those Grammys, providing excellent family entertainment.
A new Tom Chapin fan!.......2004-03-03
I'm a young mother who was recommended this cd by my first grader's class teacher. Boy was she right. My kids love it, I love it. The songs have great ideas, and clever concepts that really spark conversation in my house. And the music itself is really wonderful. (Cooking in the kitchen and Bang on the Pan are favorites) I'm sold on Tom Chapin and look forward to hearing his other albums.
More fun from Tom Chapin.......2003-10-13
My family and I are big fans of Tom Chapin, and we are as delighted as ever by him with his new CD. Plenty of clever rhymes, fun situations, and energetic music punctuate nearly every song in this compilation that celebrates the sheer fun of making music. There are many different styles of music on this CD, with separate songs featuring steel drums, string quartets, bugles, and an almost classical-sounding orchestral arrangement, to name only a few. Great variety, great fun, great music. An excellent addition to any family's quality music collection.

listen to when fighting with your wife/girlfriend.......2006-09-05
This is power pop with every song written about the joys and heartaches of women.
Mirsky is a gifted songwriter that instead of moping and using dark images takes a wry, witty "Seinfeld" approach to his observations.
The songs are all good. The only drawback is b/c the instrumentation is all the same, the songs do start to sound a bit similar and repetative.
Pop goes Eytan!.......2002-06-08
We recently rented the surprsingly amusing film "The Tao of Steve". My wife and I found ourselves humming to infectious pop on the soundtrack. And "Lowe" and behold it was Eytan Mirsky!
Its pure pop from the perspective of a loser, (with women that is). If you like Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Marshall Crenshaw, Etc...you'll like Eytan.
Great stuff, get it now and tell all your friends you were listening to Mirsky way back in 2002!
WOW! Great Sound, Great Lyrics.......2002-02-19
Definitely check this guy out! The entire CD is excellent! Eytan's lyrics are meaty; smart enough and witty enough to keep you coming back time after time. His music complements the lyrics quite nicely. Download the MP3 samples here and see for yourself. If you like them, you'll like the entire album. Also check out Eytan's other album, "Get Ready for Eytan".

Album Description
Inspired by her daughter's Waldorf pre-school experience, Sangiolo set out to create a collection of easy-to-sing songs that connect the child and caregiver, with a touch of fantasy and reality!
Fairy Moon is a bike ride with mom on a hot summer's day, picking dandelion puffs in early spring, finding a fairy ring of toadstools in the garden, dancing atop dewdrops in the wee hours of the morning, getting into trouble with imaginary pixies, searching for little leprechauns in mid-winter who make shoes for the fairies, welcoming Lady Spring after a long winter, lullabies and fireflies who light the way to bedtime, songs of friendship, love and blessings for the whole family.
The CD culminates with three Bonus Tracks for adults (that are kid-friendly), beginning with First Best Friend, a song she wrote for all mothers.

Family favorite.......2006-03-02
I bought this for my 3yr old daughter to add variety to her music. This one became a fast favorite of the whole family. Maria paints a picture with the lyrics. The songs are fun and the vocals are beautiful. I especially like the celtic influence. A real winner.
Made A Believer Out Of Me!!.......2004-09-22
Just recently bought this cd (for my eight year old daughter). One listen and I was hooked! These songs are for the whole family, not just for kids. Catchy tunes and wonderful vocals.
Enchanting Melodies for Your Little One!.......2004-08-31
A friend fo mine introduced me to Maria Sangiolo when my son was born and the whole family has fallen in love with her beautiful voice, smooth lyrics and enchanting melodies. We play the Fairy Moon at every mealtime and my ten month old son claps his hands, bangs on the table and grins from ear to ear every time we hit play. I reccommend this CD to all parents searching for a child's CD that won't drive them to insanity and that they will want to play even after the child has gone to sleep. We also love Happy Moon!
