This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Total Playing Time - 42:29 -- Dave Evans' latest of many albums on the Rebel label, "Pretty Green Hills" comes in a pretty green package and was recorded at Tom T. and Dixie Hall's Studio in Tennessee. Besides the song credits, I wish a few more liner notes would have been provided. Evans is originally from Ohio, but last I heard he was living in Morehead, Kentucky. Dave's parents realized he had an interest in music. Dave was learning accordion when his mom purchased a banjo for his father. By age 13, Dave was writing his own songs.

One of the few banjo-playing lead singers in bluegrass, Evans first professional job was in 1968 with Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys. In 1972, Dave joined Larry Sparks and the Lonesome Ramblers. From 1975-1978, he worked with Lillimae & the Dixie Gospelaires, Red Allen & the Kentuckians, Boys from Indiana, and Goins Brothers. In 1978, he formed his own group "River Bend." From 1989-1995, his life and music took a detour while he did time for an assault conviction. In 1996, Evans began performing and recording again for Rebel Records.

Driving bluegrass written by Carter Stanley ("Our Last Goodbye") opens this album, and the trio also features Bo Isaac's tenor and bass-player Mike Garris' baritone harmony. This is an interesting bluegrass project because it features such a variety of slow- and faster-tempo'ed songs with solo, duo, and trio vocalizing. Other trios are the title track about returning home to die (written by the Halls), "Sea of Regret" and "Cora is Gone" (both with Bo up on a high-baritone), and Lester Flatt's "Head Over Heels."

More often in this set, we hear Evans singing in solo arrangements. An original, "Should I Go, Should I Stay," is an inquiring lonesome tale featuring only Dave's guitar and voice. His own self-penned "Down and Out Again" has Dave and Bo wailing together as a duet on choruses. Banjo, fiddle, bass and solo voice steer "East Virginia Blues" in an expressive, distinctive and very lonesome direction. To forgo the guitar's inclusion makes for an interesting and distinguishing free-flowing 4-minute rendition of this classic. The material has a very strong traditional flavor, and I was curious about his choice to include Tom T.'s "The Year That Clayton Delaney Died" that seems a tad out of place in the set but does provide a bit of diversity.

One standard instrumental ("Soldier's Joy") is included in the set. Besides Evans and Garris, the band is Randy Thomas (guitar, mandolin), Dave Miner (Dobro on 3 cuts), Merl Johnson (bass, guitar, fiddle), and Bobby Hicks (fiddle). Bo Isaac also fiddles on "Cora is Gone." Another fine set with a lot of feeling and sentiment from Dave Evans. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Once again Dave evans proves what a soulful singer is.This man puts alot of heart into his music, more than anyone else i know of.Dave evans wears his heart on his sleeve and gives the type of performance only a select few can give.With special guest: Bobby Hicks (who is Ricky Skaggs fiddle player)adds alot of great background fiddle to evans voice.Evans banjo playing is fantastic as usual, but it's his guitar work here that really needs to be listened too.Without question, this cd marks the 9th release from rebel and in my mind its the best cd he's had there.If your a fan of great soulful singing and powerful bluegrass music,this cd is one that's highly recommended.5 out of 5 stars

I have become very selective in the music I listen to. I will admit that I do have a wide range of music that I like and will listen to when I am in certain moods, but THIS is the kind of music that I will always come home to. It is clean and unpretentious and a pleasure to listen to.

Song of the Hills: Instrumental Impressions of America's Heartland is music that I am proud of. I realize there might be others who believe this music antiquated and boring... to that sentiment I would say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Another reviewer said it best when he wrote: "a genuine "Who's Who" of acoustic musicians -- have rendered these interpretations with great skill and love."

If traditional music resonates in your soul then Song of the Hills will be a worthwhile addition to your music collection.

This is some of the most beautiful music you will ever hear. Top notch musicians Jay Ungar, Molly Mason, Nancy Blake, Eric Weissberg, and John Sebastian play beautiful, spare, acoustic melodies that evoke America's rural and Appalachian past. The total effect is so lovely and authentic that the listener feels transported to a gentler time and place. The songs are perfectly sequenced so that the music seems to flow like an unrippled river. The mood is soothing and meditative. I've noticed that my two cats come into the room, curl up, and seem to listen when this CD is playing. I've listened to these melodies intently in a focused way. I've also just let them play in the background while doing other things. Either way, it works. There's not a wrong note on this album. My particular favorites are "The River is Wide", "Shenandoah", "Man of Constant Sorrow", and "Wagoner's Lad", which showcases John Sebastian's haunting harmonica. I give this CD two thumbs up, and my cats (Rum Tum and Geordie) give it four paws up!

Recommended by a friend, this album has quickly become a treasure in my collection. It is a brilliant soundtrack for road trips when the early morning sun is rising above the dashboard and you're seeking wonderful music to carry you through the acoustic pastures and sensitive landscapes of your life. Rich in dynamics and sonic diversity, all 14 songs on this album are masterful in musicianship and artistic effect on the listener. Obviously, I believe you'd do right to invest in this album, put it on auto-repeat and let it carry you through your days for the next few months till you wear the recording out.

I like all types of music and folk is a fairly new interest of mine. On a trip to Ireland this summer I got very interested in Celtic music and traditional Irish Folk music. I bought a fist full of CDs in Ireland. None compare to this albumn. This is terrific. The moods cover the whole spectrum. Each piece has its own mood and they go from sad and meloncholy to toe-tapping excitement. The fiddles are fantastic. I can't say enough good about this albumn.

Even when he collaborates with someone as down-home as bluegrass king Ralph Stanley, Nashville singer-songwriter Jim Lauderdale's grass roots are often tinged with a hint of latter-day, tongue-in-cheek surrealism. No surprise that when Lauderdale hooks up with longtime Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter to write an album's worth of songs, they emerge as a quintessential "cosmic cowboy" tag team. Loopy, narrative frolics like "Trashcan Tomcat" and "Crazy Peg and Darby Doyle" sound like the Beverly Hillbillies set to Zap Comics, while lovely ballads like "Tales From the Sad Hotel" and "Head for the Sun" wed earnest country melodies to goofy, inscrutable lyrics that make you want to weep and chuckle all in the same breath. --Bob Allen

If you like true "roots" music this CD is a must-have. The combination of Robert Hunter's wonderful lyrics and Jim Lauderdale's beautiful melodies make for a body of work that will be treasured in anyone's music collection. The last track is a little out of character in my opinion (I dont think the drums were particularly necessary for this CD,) but that certainly doesn't stop me from giving the CD a full five stars.

Over the past several years, Jim Lauderdale has become my favorite singer/songwriter. While HEADED FOR THE HILLS is not the overtly bluegrass album as his two collaborations with Ralph Stanley, there are enough dobros, fiddles and mandolins to make this one of the most satisfying albums of Lauderdale's career.

In addition to guest musicians like Emmylou Harris, Tim O'Brien and Gillian Welch, lyricist Robert Hunter co-wrote each of these 13 tracks with Lauderdale, lending the album a backporch feel missing from much of today's country music. Even the idiosyncratic country sounds of Donna the Buffalo on "Upside Down" fit nicely on this collection of old timey country songs. Highlights include "High Timberline," "Crazy Peg and Darby Doyle" and "Head for the Sun." HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I purchased this cd about two months ago and have listened to it about 15 times. Originally, I purchased it on a whim due to Robert Hunter's participation in the lyric process. I have so much music it is hard to listen to something often, but this cd I am calling the best release of 2004 (thus far). Go inside the stories, hear the tunes. This cd really is a winner cover to cover. 5 stars is only reserved for *really* good albums. This is one.

I had a hunch that I would like this CD. I had never heard Jim Lauderdale's music before "Headed for the Hills", but I had heard of him, and being a fan of Robert Hunter, I knew this would be a good place to hear him for the first time. One thing that almost held me back from getting this CD was the thought, "what if Hunter's lyrics are really bad?" I dig almost every song Hunter ever wrote with Jerry Garcia, but I don't have the same confidence in Hunter's ability to write for other Dead members and stay away from any post-Jerry songs that Hunter has written for the Dead because, in my opinion, they can't stand up to the classic ones he wrote with Garcia. The first time I listened to this CD I could tell that the lyrics weren't bad, but I wasn't sure I liked the phrasing or singing style of Lauderdale. However, I felt compelled to listen again. It's funny how differently music sounds the first time you're hearing it compared to when you've become accustomed to it. I scrutinized the lyrics and was ready to be very critical of them. Fortunately, after listening to this CD over a half dozen times now, I can say there isn't much to criticize about it. I quickly got over my aversion to Lauderdale's voice and phrasing. It sounds extremely natural. It's really starting to sink in. The melodies, which I understand were written by Lauderdale, take shape after time and start to stand out. The one or two songs that have yet to win me over probably will eventually. If I had to criticize anything it would be that although the musicianship is top notch, a lot of guests sit in, it is rather conservative at times. I would like to have heard a little bit more "music" between verses, but that's not too big of an issue. This album is going to make me a fan of Jim Lauderdale. I'm already planning on buying the album he did with Donna the Buffalo called "Wait 'Til Spring" and the one he did with Ralph Stanley called "Lost in the Lonesome Pines". I may even get more after that. With Lauderdale, Hunter has found a new voice for his words, and I hope to see the two on them collaborate again in the future.

Finally, a country and western record that plays more western than country. Not so much cowboy as it is prospector.
Though the beautiful instrumentation is inspired appalachian, the vocals and stories reflect a world of grizzled seekers in the promised land somewhere past the Big Muddy.
Cinematic and nearly animated, there is an edgy mirth spun here with Lauderdale's earthy yodel rooting the tales of Grateful Dead icon, Robert Hunter, to the mountainside.
This disc makes for a great ride into a purple sage filled valley.

We all consider the pioneers of country music to be Jimmie Rodgers, the Carters, and of course, Hank. But, here's the real thing when it comes to the original harmonica genius. This is an affordable album that allows the listener to enjoy the most gifted "harp" player to ever grace the stage of country music (today's Blues Traveler with John Popper is a mere pimple on Wayne Raney's backside). There are 16 numbers here that showcase Wayne's strong, yet gentle, voice, including: "Why Dont You Haul Off and Love Me"; the tongue in cheek "Adam"; and "Burning Your Love Letters". I doubt you will ever hear any of these cuts played on todays radio, but that's the beauty of recorded music. Granted, these songs are half-a-century old, any fan of good music will completely enjoy every song provided on this CD. I strongly suggest you buy this one...before it is no longer available. One criticism is
the packaging leaves a lot to be desired, including no liner notes regarding the artist.

Essential music from this forgotton pioneer in country music harmonica. Lots of boogie music. Don't let the cover fool you, this is hard driving country music, not hill music. This would have gotten 4 or 5 stars if there were any notes, song info, recording dates, or a better cover. This should have been treated more seriously.

Two of contemporary folk music's leading ladies -- Anne Hills and Cindy Mangsen -- are joined here by an incredible supporting cast to deliver one of the most enjoyable albums of the last 30 years. Drawing mostly on traditional ballads, with a few actualy credited to individual authors, this collection runs the gamut -- everything from reflective ballads to gospel to bluegrass to English music hall to string band tunes. You get the idea.

These are songs that these two women have 'grown up' with and loved over the space of their well-respected careers -- and with the help of such stellar friends as (the sadly late) John Hartford, Gordon Bok, Laurie Lewis, Priscilla Herdman, Jan Burda, Tom Paxton, Carla Sciaky, Steve Gillette, John Roberts and Tony Barrand, and the incredibly fun Volo Bogtrotters (just try to listen to 'Bill Morgan and his gal' only once!), this recording can't help but shine.

Unlike other recordings featuring a ton of talented guests, the contributions these folks offer here fit in seamlessly with the talented foundation of the voices of Anne and Cindy. There aren't a lot of people playing on any one cut, so no toes are stepped on -- no one gets in the way musically. From the sound of the album, egos were wisely left at the door to the studio, allowing the joy exuded by the performers in bringing these songs to life to infect us all. I must also add that the beautiful production work of Scott Petito adds a lot to the quality of the project -- his name on a recording is always an indication of fine sound engineering.

I could go down the track listing and rave about each of the 17 tracks -- but I think that would be a bit long. The standouts are many, and they could change with each listening of this wonderful disc. I've been enjoying it for over 6 years and it still sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it. Anne Hills and Cindy Mangsen have incredibly beautiful, expressive voices -- and they were born to sing together. They've been doing so for over 20 years on and off -- their harmonies are exquisite, but never overbearing. Coupled with the (mostly) simple, tasteful arrangements here, this cd is 50 minutes well-spent, over and over again.

Other avenues to explore: Anne Hills and Cindy Mangsen have several fine solo recordings available. Anne and Cindy also work with Priscilla Herdman as the wonderful VOICES trio. Cindy Mangsen and hubby Steve Gillette are also a respected, established duo. And those are just the principals of this amazing project...! They all tour extensively and often -- see them in any combination wherever and whenever you can. The music is always of the highest quality -- and fun!

My grandfather, Rev. James C. Moore, wrote the title song of this recording when he returned to his parents' home after an extended time away and first noticed that his parents were getting older. My family and I are very grateful for Anne and Cindy's true performance of his music.

Anne Hills and Cindy Magsen are a wonderful pair of singers. This album is a collection of folk songs in the true sense of the word: most of the choices are classic ballads and traditional songs...even a shape-note hymn. The close harmonies of Ann and Cindy, and Priscilla Herdman, are intricate and impeccable. Add to that mix some great backup artistry: Laurie Lewis, Pete Sutherland, Steve Rosen, John Hartford..and you have it all! If you like folk music, you should include this album in your collection.

      If you have any appreciation whatsoever for traditional American music, this collection is absolutely essential for your collection. One of the best and most classic albums i've ever heard from one of the most profound song writers and guitar wizards of our time. I don't know if the music was digitally remastered, but the sound quality is excellent and really adds to the feeling.

      I agree with the first reviewer; there's an alarming lack of reviews for this album. I figured it was more or less a classic. There aren't many solo pickers who can make it sound more like they've got a band behind them than Travis. You don't need much more to recommend the disc than its comprising both "Dark as a Dungeon" and "Sixteen Tons," but there you have it: "I Am a Pilgrim," "Barbara Allen," and "Lost John."

      Can't believe there aren't some ole Merle fans out there who would tell the rest of us whether or not we should buy this album.After all,Merle is the guy responsible for"Travis-picking"....guitar players will tell you what that is. Anyway, the samples sound good but I wish someone else would've reviewed this album first. I'll check back in a while and see

      This cd is a wonderful work of art that uses the natural sounding classical guitar to portay many beautiful landscapes. From quiet meadows to a holiday celebration, Steve Suvada depicts a wide range of Richard Pick's most beautiful songs. As a student of Steve Suvada, I can tell you that this cd is a small taste of his incredible talent as a very creative and devoted guitarist. You will surely be amazed by his ability to carry on the wonderful music of Richard Pick.

      Richard Pick's music is some of the finest I've ever heard written for the classical guitar. He is truly one of the most underrated voices of his generation, and is wonderfully American and Naturalist in his themes. I hope people will listen to this wonderful performance by Mr. Suvada and thank him for perpetuating the music of this inspiring American composer...Richard Pick. It is obvious to the listener that he worked closely with Richard Pick in the production of this recording, so as to come up with the definitive interpretation of Pick's work. The two men made a marvelous team in the production of this beautiful record. Thank you for this gem of American Classical guitar music!!!!

      Steve Suvada is the perfect player for this music. Richard Pick's music touches the soul, and can make you forget about any problems of the world that may be in your way. If you are looking for some beautiful music to chill out and relax with, this is a great Cd. If you are a guitarist and not familiar with Pick's music, then you should look into it.
