5 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Joan Tears Off the Covers .......2006-07-18

Joan Jett (nee, Joan Marie Larkin) first gained fame as the teenage guitarist and singer for prototypical all-grrl band, the "Runaways," ("Cherry Bomb"), then continued her success with "Joan Jett and the Blackhearts," which produced (among many other songs) the hit "I Love Rock 'N Roll," which reached Billboard's #1 spot in the Spring of 1982. Jett recorded many covers during the 'Blackhearts' years, including the seminal "I Love Rock 'N Roll" (written by "The Arrows"), as well as a great version of "Crimson and Clover" and "Do You Wanna Touch Me."

This 1990 release is all covers, and is mostly outstanding. Highlights include her ironic, aggressive rendition of "Pretty Vacant," her voice appropriately drone-y, yet soaring over the backgrounds; "Love Hurts," in which her covers outshines the original; and risky--because the originals were done by rock icons--but surprisingly superb and enjoyable treatments of "Love Me Two Times" (the Doors), "Up from the Skies (Jimi Hendrix)," "Have You Seen the Rain (Credence Clearwater Revival)," and "Celluloid Heroes (the Kinks)" featuring Ray Davies and a very satisfying guitar solo.

The songs are muscular, energetic, and heavy on the rhythm section (bass and drums), giving a raw, propulsive feeling to most of the songs (e.g., "Tush" in which--unlike ZZ Top--she doesn't distort the pronunciation of the title, and "Dirty Deeds," more honest and less gimmicky than the original, IMHO). The only disappointing cuts were "Roadrunner USA," probably never a great song anyway, and her belabored try at "Time Has Come Today." I must admit that I've never heard a good cover of the latter song. At least Joan's take is far superior to the awful Steve Earle version. Apparently, only the Chambers Brothers can do this song right.

Parenthetically, Jett never received what she was owed for "I Love ROck and Roll," and the ensueing years are a testament to her multifaceted talent (producing, acting), and longevity (she has been both pre- and post-punk, and was a participant/role model for some in the "riot grrl" movement]). Her "Greatest Hits" LPs will give you more original Joan Jett (including the famous "Cherry Bomb," on which she "covers" the Runaways own song), but "The Hits" deserves your attention for the (mostly) great selection of songs sung by the now-iconic J. Jett. Excellent production (in New York City), nice photo of Jett on the cover, but, unfortunately, no liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars Great cover tunes from one hot chic!.......2006-03-20

Joan Jett is one hot heavy metal chic covering some awesome tunes. I am shocked that none of these songs became hits in their own rights. Joan does them that good. If you like her style, then this album is a must. I know you won't be let down.

4 out of 5 stars COVERING THE BASICS.......2005-10-28

Since nearly all of leather-clad pre-Riot GRRRL Joan Jett's biggest hits were cover versions anyway---even I Love Rock and Roll was originally an English hit for the Arrows---an entire LP of rock classic remakes makes perfect sense. Numerous artists have released all-cover platters of their fave influences, including the Ramones and Rush, but Jett's ripping trip through time is one of the genre's best. The smartly titled Hit List showcases the Blackheart Babe's crunching, glam-punctuated takes on AC/DC's DIRTY DEES DONE DIRT CHEAP, ZZ Top's lusty anthem TUSH, and even PRETTY VACANT, from fellow punk pioneers the Sex Pistols. For contrast, the Kinks' doleful tribute to Hollywood's past, CELLULOID HEROES, and Nazareth's biggest number LOVE HURTS also get the nod. Like Brownsville Station before her, this Suzi Quatro protege can give nearly any oldie, be it TIME HAS COME TODAY or ROADRUNNER, the Gary Glitter treatment and make it seem like her own idea. This SOUNDS like Joan Jett's greatest hits, and you'll have so much fun listening, you won't even care that none of them really are.....RATING: FOUR BLACK HEARTS

1 out of 5 stars Very dissapointed.......2005-01-15

Well, the CD title says Hit list, and these songs are hits from 70's and 80's. But Joan Jett couldn't deliver any of these hits as good as it should be, on all songs here, her vocals are very lame & weak. Musicianship sucks, I know Blackhearts can play, but here it's just a dissapointment, maybe, this album is the greatest mistake of Joan Jett & B's career. Avoid this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Rockin'.......2004-04-25

The whole cd is worthy of praise. Not often do I buy a cd I like every song on it. This is one of those.

3 out of 5 stars What's the purpose of a re-recording?.......2007-01-24

The majority of these songs sound very similar to the originals or have been produced in a manner so that they do not sound as good as the originals. Although the sound quality has improved on this CD for their older work, the songs lack the impact and originality of the originals. I just don't particularly like the production of this new album although I still love the songs. I definitely recommend purchasing select songs (the new ones) instead of the entire album.

2 out of 5 stars SUCH a bad idea.......2007-01-04

I'm going to try to keep this short, there's not much to really say about this CD. Unwritten Law has been on approximately 500 million labels through the years. Thus a true "greatest hits" is nearly impossible. So what we're left with is new recordings of songs that are almost 15 years old in some cases. I have heard CPK many, many times in my life, I've seen them perform it live many, many times in my life, but even Scott Russo, completely drunk on stage, is still better than this version. All of these new versions have lost their edge (seriously, what is with the "ooh oohs" in CPK?). Maybe I'm just old, and seeing these kinds of CDs makes me remember how much I once enjoyed a band, but at the same time, makes me remember why I gave up on their music in the first place. Enjoy the CD, but please listen to the originals to see how they were meant to be.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the wait.......2007-01-03

Well, I've been waiting for this one since October when it was supposed to come out. It was worth the wait. Greatest Hits all redone. Some of the songs I like better than the originals ie Teenage Suicide, some of them sound about the same ie Up All Night and some of them need time to grow ie Shallow. None of them are bad. The 2 new tracks simply rock. Check this CD out, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars What a grand surprise.......2005-05-28

In October 2004, I was touring the USA and visited Nashville.
We went to a "dinner show" near Opryland and the main singer was
Mel McDaniel. His performance was outstanding and consisted of most of the songs on this CD. He is 62 and puts on a terrifically "audience-friendly" show. The next night we went to
"Grand Ol' Opry" and, to our great pleasure, Mel was on that
show too...and his rendition of "Stand Up" was undoubtedly the
best of the whole show. This CD lives in my car and gets played
every few days..Highly recommended

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This CD is PERFECT. ARS is at their absolute best!!!.......2006-02-20

I bought this just taking a chance on an old band that had some great songs some twenty plus years ago. ARS was a southern rock band with Fleetwood Mac tendencies. They've written some of the most emotionally charged songs you'll ever hear. The hit list is a blend of new and old songs done partially unplugged. The production work of Buddie Buie and engineering of Rodney Mills is flawless. And the new songs blend perfectly with the old stuff.
"She Knows All My Tricks" is a "Homesick" style southern rocker that has some great guitar work from Barry Bailey. The original tunes, "Imaginary Lover" and "So Into You" and "Do It Or Die" are all particularly good arrangements. The music is much more reflective and introspective. What's hard to imagine is more emotion being infused into the these early ARS classics. But that's what happens on this collection. Lead singer Ronnie Hammond is re-born on these tunes. "Angel" and "Voodoo" are also superb new songs with a southern rock flavor. Nostalgia makes an appearance on "Child Of The Video Age", which is a good song, but possibly the weakest track on this disc. And it's still better than most new music by old artists these days. "Alien" is done with incredible passion and feeling. "I Don't Want To Grow Old Alone" is an unbelievably sincere plea for companionship. A deeply moving song. The CD ends with "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight". And in a post 911 world, nothing could be more real than a song about how things have gone (or are going) crazy. Hammond's vocals seem to update the original with a deep sense of urgency.

The hit list contains 10 perfectly executed songs that demonstrate that an old band can still sound great with the right musicians, the right producers and excellent material. The Atlanta Rhythm Section could have kept going with this lineup. But due to a record label that went belly up, and a radio industry that has completely lost any sense of what's good, ARS has found the bargain bin. Don't pass this CD up. And look for their albums ARS '96 and Eufaula as well. This was the strongest period for this veteran studio band. A+++

5 out of 5 stars A Bitter sweet goodbye.......2003-07-18

Ok so the songs are in a differnt track listing then the Jubilation album. No lyrics or no telling you who's palying on what. You got to listen to it as a goodbye thanks for the memories and thank you album. "High Cotton" by Danko is a great song to lsiten on you're porch with a glass of lemonade. "Book Faded Brown" by Paul Jost and sand wonderfully By Danko is a song no one will ever forget. John Hiatt's "Bound by Love" is great if you're alone at least you'll be taken care by some one who will always tenderly love you that's why you stay. It's the last time will ever be able to hearRick Danko singing his heart out with the Band and Levon's crispy voice that of a man who has seen it all. "French Girls" Is a short but sweet Goodbye. We can reflect on the joy they brought us but really never asked for anything in return for 30 years.

4 out of 5 stars Jubilation For Cheap!.......2003-07-11

The title makes it sound like a "best of", maybe even the original lineup with Richard & Robbie, but it's actually the "Jubilation" album with a different order of songs. The artwork is very basic, no lyrics & the only picture is a collage of Garth, Levon, & Rick on the cover. If all you want is the music, this is alot cheaper than any other version though.
As for the music itself, I'm one of those fans who likes the 90's Band just about as much as before. Anything they might have lost without Robbie they make up for with guest artists (Eric Clapton, John Hiatt), & cover versions that they either make their own or do them better. What I liked about the original Band was the songs, but mostly the way they were sung, & it's a real shame we won't ever hear Rick's & Levon's great voices ever again, but we have the three 90's albums & the "Original" classics too.
By the way, Rick recorded a live album "Live At Breeze Hill" shortly before he died, & it has Garth on it along with others.

Pretty amazing lirycs and beats from Saafir" the hit list" and if you want to hear something fresh & difirent ? I highly recommend it! A def street banger! Best tracks ? "mask-a-raid" , "25 ta life" and, "smart bomb" for real headz.

      5 out of 5 stars WORDPLAY.......2005-08-03

One of my favorite MC's of all time (SAAFIR) drops illness from start to finish. His unique way of wordplay fits perfectly into his production which by the way is dope. A HIP HOP CLASSIC! A+

3 out of 5 stars Solid hip hop album.......2005-04-22

This is a solid album from Saafir, but I don't think he's strong enough to make a really strong album by himself. Saafir has a deep, broad voice and a deliberate, occasionally mechanical flow. To me he sounds like a street version of Aesop Rock, or Kam (who guests on "watch how daddy ball")if Kam had less flavor.
Not a bad CD, but nothing exceptional either. It would be a nice addition for the collection but don't except an album worth hundreds of spins.

Ras Kass and Saafir are the illest. Xzibit is ok...but too mainstream...

Saafir has "retired" but that might not be true...hopefully next album will come out soon. ill methapors

With this album, I think he draws one step closer to the champion status of Kool Keith and Del the Funky Homosapien. For those who like good rap (you know who you are), but this album...
