5 out of 5 stars One of the best debuts ever.......2005-06-16

Compton's Most Wanted's CD It's A Compton Thing is one of the best debut rap albums to ever grace the rap industry. I remember when the tv channel The Box was just hitting the airway's back in '90, the Compton's Most Wanted video "One Time Gafflin' Up" was one of the videos that I could identify on that channel. MC Eiht & Chill MC made a great dynamic duo even though Chill MC was heard on half of the CD. As one writer said, this was the alternative to NWA at that time. My favorite song on here is "It's Compton Thang" the title track with "Late Night Hype" in second by a hair. This CD did not really have a lot of explicit lyrics in it for a group from Compton. Live at Lonzo's is short but dope rhyming from Chill & Eiht. It's a shame that Chill MC did not rap on Staight Check'em or Music to Driveby because I think from a lyrical standpoint, he was better than Eiht(No offense). Overall, an outstanding debut and this is their second best one after Music to Driveby. One final thing, what ever happened to Chill MC? Peace!!

5 out of 5 stars I love this cd.......2003-11-02

mc eiht was tight and this was his first joint back in the day featurex the chill mc who somehow fell off after this first release anyway cmw was like nwa's flipside and if eazy and the ruthless posse was'nt so mainstream they would have probaly sounded liuke this but still I love eiht's rhymeflow like in the final chapter with about 4 james brown samples keeping it ghetto, and late nite hype which uses anita baker's angel very nicely while eiht and chill describe the hood and what can happen if you're caught slipping at night and it's a compton thing is my favorite I miss the good old days.

5 out of 5 stars the best westcoast album ever.......2002-06-18

5 out of 5 stars The classic true blue tape..........2006-06-25

The golden age of west coast hip hop and hip hop in general, 1988 and '89 held down a host of classic albums. NWA's Straight Outta Compton, Eric B & Rakim's Follow The Leader, Eazy E's (R.I.P.) Eazy Duz It, Public Enemy's It Takes A Nation..., Stetsasonic's In Full Gear, MC Lyte's Lyte As A Rock, and mad others. Let me tell you My thoughts about CMW's It's A Compton Thang. Thorough production, cuts and smooth gangsta lyrics put CMW in the real hip hop category. Noted, this was the R&B label's second rap act (same label that garnered R&B legends Freddie Jackson, Me'lisa Morgan, Lilo Thomas, etc.,) CMW was the most successful rap act on the Orpheus roster at the time. Who was the first, you ask? Who cares, this was the beginning of a street revolution. I remember the blue tape, too! Right along with the house parties in the hood that I used to DJ back in high school, I used to mix This Is Compton in with Cool C (R.I.P.) record I Gotta Habit, and then the remix to Words I Manifest by Gang Starr. I miss them days.
Now, this CD is one hell of a rare item, but not as much as the CD singles from this CD and later LP's, or the CD with the first appearence of CMW and the full-length version of Rhymes Too Funky. I was lucky enough to find it because I know no collection of Compton's Most is complete without it. This is still, to Me, MC Eiht's finest hour and Chill MC's classic appearence. I do hope one day that this CD is remastered with the 2 b-sides Whose Is It? (Give It Up Pt 2) and track released on the clean version and on b-side of a 12" (I can't remember the name of the song...) Whatever happens, I will be checking for the new CMW cd even though I know it can't touch this one.
Ohh Jeeah, B-Fats was the first for those who care.

5 out of 5 stars I have to disagree with the other review..........2004-03-27

I relate to almost everything said in the prior review for this album except the rating. I would have to give the album a 4 1/2. I purchased the blue tape in 1990 the day it came out due to a shout out from M.C. Ren I heard somewhere. While my tape was stolen as well (rare to come by) I did manage to run out immediately & purchase the CD which I still have today along with the vinyl for "One Time..."

All of this album was groundbreaking at the time. Very few gangsta rappers had come out in 1990. The production took standard ideas and tweeked them. In fact, many of the tracks and sample choices have been recycled time and again from this album (ie the title track that used Mtume's Sugar Hill waaaaaaay before AZ). And before Outkast got acclaim for using a harmonica on Rosa Parks, "I Give Up Nuthin" had a cold harmonica loop used for menace.

Eiht rhymed with a smoothness and passion that he only duplicated on Music to Driveby. He threw out unheard slang and set up new slang phrases used to this day (ie "Duck Sick" - again see Outkast's Big Boi on "Art of Storytellin'" from Aquemini as example). He did not use what has become his trademark "Geeeyah" that has, in my opinon become truly annoying.

This is a raw West Coast album prior to the invention of G-Funk. It wasn't an NWA clone by any stretch. Plus you have the added bonus feature of Chill before he had to do a little bid. Chill in fact appeared on the original version of Growin Up In The Hood from the Boyz In Tha Hood Soundtrack. He also appeared later with crew member Boom Bam as a group called N.O.T.R. in 96 or 97.

I remember being asked what I was listening to during football one afternoon by this dude I had no respect for. I said "CMW". He replied "I never heard of 'em". I simply replied "You will..."

3 out of 5 stars THE ONE THAT STARTED IT ALL.......1999-03-07

i had this recording a very long time ago, back in early 1990. if i still remember correctly, i think it came in an all blue cassette. the only reason i was interested in it is because of the groups name, and NWA was a notable claiming the same area at that time. but anyway, nobody really new about MC EIHT, THE CHILL, and DJ MIKE T, so i found myself the only one in my 'hood bumpin CMW at that time. little did i know that in the few years to come CMW would blow up like the world trade center. and MC EHIT would later become a premiere gangsta rapper known throughout the world. as for this album, i only gave it 3 stars, but it derserves maybe 3 and a half. notables on this cut are: 1 time gaff..., cool i'm wit it, duck sick, late night hype (super mello groove), and the title track; ITS A COMPTON THANG - which never gets old. EHIT's lyrics are more relaxed, and CHILL tends to rapp more on this cut than other CMW releases. in fact, this is the only time you can hear him rapp until you buy DEATH THREATZ. after losing my tape of this album sometime in 1992, i have been looking for it ever since on cd. it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to find, and thanx to Amazon i finally can complete my MC EHIT/CMW collection. this album is not for everybody, only for a few elite people who know. if you are on this page then you know- and if you wanna know then buy it.
