Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good companion piece to "Hits".......2007-02-06

There are many good songs on "Greatest Misses," making this a good purchase for the casual Devo listener. With Devo's irreverent sense of humor, most of these songs will put a smile on your face. In typical erudite fashion, they look down their noses at blockheads and mongoloids. "Hold the pickles / hold the lettuce / all that we ask is that / you let us serve it YOUR way" is their stab at our fast food nation on "Too Much Paranoias." I cannot help but find the misogyny of "Timing X/Space Junk" funny. Typical for Devo's idea of a love song, the girl is a person of reference rather than a person of address. Not so typically, however, the girl this time is killed, though not by murder. Rather, she is hit by "space junk," such as the Sputnik, which fell from the sky. ("Original" is a word that promptly comes to mind when conjuring words to describe Devo.) The "Explicit lyrics advisory" comes from one song, "Penetration in the Centerfold." (Hint: "penetration" does not refer to the staples that were used to bind magazines at that time.) Not quite misses, "Jocko Homo" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" are nonetheless slightly different versions than those appearing on the "Greatest Hits" disc. Devo is a group whose music does not appeal to all tastes, though fans cannot get enough. This is a very good choice for purchase, though a better choice for celebrating geekdom would be to get all their original releases.

5 out of 5 stars Shrivel up, Devo!.......2006-05-06

It's interesting to see what tracks Devo picked for "Greatest Misses" as compared with "Greatest Hits" - I think this volume is significantly more interesting to listen to and in the long run is the better compilation. I'm not usually a fan of "best of" CDs - and I'd suggest getting Devo's first 3 CDs because they are about as good as you can get for late 70's/early 80's punk/new wave. But this has a couple of really great alternate versions (the Booji Boy mixes) that breathe new life into these great songs. I think for those songs alone it's worth the $10 I paid for it. I also enjoyed listening to "Speed Racer" - glad to have that one without having to buy "Oh No, It's Devo" (I think that's what it's from)- which isn't so hot. Mark Mothersbaugh & Jerry C - those guys are geniuses and will someday will be recognized as the pioneers that they are. Devolution is real and it's happening all around us - look (listen) and see!

3 out of 5 stars You're Missing (ha ha) the Point........2005-10-15

I interpreted this album in a different way than anyone else seems to have interpreted it. Mark is a very strange person; he seems to have a very dry, ironic brand of humor. I think this was simply a collection of songs he liked the least, to balance out the songs he liked the most (greatest hits). I think the album was intended to be a joke- but it's still really interesting to hear the alternate versions of these songs. If you like getting inside of Mark's head, you should listen to this; but as far as a fun album to listen to, you're really better off with either the greatest hits or one of the actual albums.

4 out of 5 stars The truth about this collection.......2004-02-05

If you are a die-hard fan (like myself), not buying this collection would be a mistake. A few previous reviews pointed out that much of this material is availible on the first 2 albums. They obviously lack good ears and good eyesight, because many of those songs are different versions. They even say so on the liner notes. There is enough rare stuff on this collection to make it worth having. Listen for the extra verse on Jocko Homo. Enough said!

5 out of 5 stars Wow! I guess I'm out in left field..........2004-01-09

...because I LOVE this collection of Devo tunes. I am quite happy to find the "Duty Now for the Future" songs collected here, and "Penetration..." is just the icing on the cake. Don't get me wrong; I like the "Greatest Hits" too, but I don't think this is bad music at all. Besides, I can't seem to find "Duty..." for sale, except as a high priced import!

Anyway, "Mongoloid" is a great song, I really like "Clockout" and "Blockhead", and even the remix version of "Jocko Homo" has its appeal. Oh, and "Pink Pussycat" is a fine tune as well. So, if you are a true Devo fan, you probably kept your vinyl copies of their excellent first two albums, but being an idiot, I didn't, which leaves me quite satisfied with the trip through memory lane. Still, I would have liked to have "Praying Hands"!

4 out of 5 stars Missed this the first time.......2006-01-22

I must admit, as an avid PE fan, I was somewhat disappointed by this album, at FIRST, but like Flav said quite a long time ago, "Don't Believe The Hype". I was fooled by some of the reviewers remarks that said this was a "letdown" from their previous stuff, but NO true artists sound stays exactly the same, and after listening to this album after NOT hearing the previous three albums, it sounds a whole lot better.

Instead of measuring this up against the first three albums, we should hold this one on it's own merit. Fresh cuts like "Tie Goes to The Runner", "I Gotta Do What I Gotta Do" and "Air Hoodlum", plus some nices remixes of "Megablast", "You Gonna get Yours" and more combined with the news bytes from the Ted Koppels' of the times make this a must have just for the vibe of the times alone. On top of that, the cuts I mentioned are pretty damn good too

      4 out of 5 stars P.E. hits with these b-sides and remixes.......2005-04-21

I think this cd has some real classics and some of my favourite PE moments. Tie Goes to Runner, Hit da Road Jack, and Gett Off My Back are great tunes! The remixes of Louder Than a Bomb and You're Gonna Get Yours are great and i like them as much as the originals. And i was always impressed with the radically different live version of shut em down which has some fun freestyling as they wait for the sound system to be working just right, and the back beat and groove on this live version are great. The other songs i like but usually skipped to the ones mentioned above. So not a consistent cd but understandable as it was b-sides, remixes, and live stuff. Glad they put this out, had some wicked tracks!

2 out of 5 stars I WAS ONE VERY DISSAPOINTED PE FAN WHEN I HEARD THIS CD.......2003-11-05

AFTER HEARING ''YO! BUM RUSH THE SHOW'', ''IT TAKES A NATION OF MILLIONS'', ''FEAR OF A BLACK PLANET'', AND ''APOCALYPSE 91'', I THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE ANOTHER GREAT CD. BUT, I WAS REALLY WRONG. I WILL ADMIT, THEY SHOULD'VE JUST FILLED THIS UP WITH JUST REMIXES. BUT, THIS CD HAS 6 NEW SONGS AND 7 REMIXES. MOST OF THE NEW SONGS ARE CORNY, ESPECIALLY ''GETT OFF MY BACK''. ''AIR HOODLUM'' IS GOOD, BUT IT JUST COULD'VE BEEN BETTER. THE HIGH POINTS OF THIS CD IS ITS REMIXES. THE BEST REMIX ON THIS CD IS BY FAR THE ''LOUDER THAN A BOMB'' REMIX WHICH WAS REMIXED BY THE LATE GREAT JAM MASTER JAY. ''MEGABLAST'' WAS ALSO REMIXED PRETTY GOOD. BUT THEY ALMOST REALLY F'D UP THIS CD BY ENDING IT WITH A VERY VERY WACK LIVE VERSION OF THE CLASSIC ''SHUT EM DOWN'', WHICH USES AN EXTREMELY WACK BEAT. I REALLY THINK THIS CD COULD'VE WORKED OUT A LOT BETTER THAN WHAT IT DID, BUT, AS PUBLIC ENEMY'S SUCCESS STARTED TO FADE AWAY, THERE ALBUMS BEGAN TO GET MEDIOCRE. IRONICALLY, 10 YEARS AFTER THIS CAME OUT, PE USED THIS VERY SAME METHOD OF MIXING NEW SONGS WITH REMIXES TO MAKE ''REVOLVERLUTION'' WHICH WAS A WHOLE LOT BETTER THAN THIS.

5 out of 5 stars Friggin' ill Cd!!.......2002-02-11

Thank you, Public Enemy! This is an ill compilation and a must-have for any hardcore PE fan! I love all the remixes they did, but the other songs were good too. The best cuts were the remixes for Party For Your Right To Fight, Louder Than A Bomb, and You're Gonna Get Yours. For a collection of b-sides alone, this is a very impressive album. I recommend you buy this album for a great collection of party jams, PE fan or not!!

3 out of 5 stars Great concept, poor execution.......2001-07-10

After 4 classic albums in a row, this was a big letdown. What could have been a great collection of B-sides and other uncollected tracks somehow came out way too hit-or-miss. Highs (enough to recommend the CD) and lows abound.
