Under the Radar.......2006-07-27
The UMC's flew under many people's radars, but as you can see now its a much sought after release..Great beats and flows that sparked a style of rap which has carried on through today (you can even say Kanye uses similar style) "Anyway the Wind Blows", "Woman Be Out", "Never Never Land" and the classic "Bleu Cheese" are choice cuts on this album..cop it if you can!
I Laughed.......I Cried...................2006-05-17
Why oh why did I not cop this when it came out...I want to kick myself!!! I remember the singles and the videos....but damn...I slept! But I had to redeem myself. I finally heard it and fully enveloped myself in positive vibes, bouncy beats with a pair of emcees (Kool Kim and Haas G) that have incredible chemistry and a flow to match.
Now I must put my headphones back on and listen to this album 100 times in a row......
Overlooked, Underrated and Forgotten.......2005-09-01
Another 1991 gem that does not get it's due. This group got lost in the sauce for real. Standout joints are Blue Cheese, Morals, One to Grow on, Kraftwerks, It gonna last, and Any way the wind blows.
It's Gonna Last..........2005-07-18
This album is a true lost classic, seemingly over-looked by damn near everyone. This post-DAISY AGE gem has a similar vibe to De La's "3 Feet..." debut, but a sound all to it's own. It's a staple of Hip-Hop that really gets no respect. When I bring up the UMC's almost everyone either; a) hasn't heard of them, or b) thinks that I'm talking about The Ultramagnetic MC's. Man, how ignorance runs rampant through Hip-Hop...
UMC's Haas G & Kool Kim have one of my favorite flows in Hip-Hop. Their lyrical dexterity is truly a beautiful thing, whether the beat is fast ("One to Grow On," "Blue Cheese") or slow ("Morals," "It's Gonna Last") they ride the beat flawlessly & perfectly. Their lyrics are well thought-out, meaningful and original - everything that makes a great MC. The beats are amazing, I love everyone of them. The production was handled by Haas & RNS (later to go on and produce for Wu-Tang), the beats are all very unique, bouncy and just plain dope. They give the album a happy vibe that always puts me in a good mood. I can't say enough good things about this album, over the many years it's evolved from an album I really appreciate into one of my treasured favorites. From front to back this album is a masterpiece, no skipping needed (an important requirement for a classic).
The track listing is:
1) One to Grow On
2) Kraftworks
3) Morals
4) Blue Cheese
5) Swing it to the Area
6) Never Never Land
7) You Got My Back
8) Jive Talk
9) Feelings
10) Any Way the Wind Blows
11) Pass it On
12) Woman Be Out
13) Hey Here We Go
14) It's Gonna Last
Bottom Line: I love this album. Any fan of Old Hip-Hop or more specifically The Native Tongues will love this album. It's a masterpiece and It's Gonna Last. 5 stars, Peace.
things have changed.......2005-06-22
Yo... I've had this album for awhile but forgot how dope it was until I listened to it recently. This is when hip-hop was still real, still ours, still Black. Before it got lost in gangsta-life and the suburbs. When you listen to the lyrics on this album you are reminded that rap music use to be not just about good vibrations but also community inspiration. UMC's were just one of many cats during the golden era/black nationalist period of the late 80's early 90's that were transmitting a message that told young Black people that it was actually "cool" to be intelligent, articulate, well read and drug free. LISTEN TO THE LYRICS ON THIS ALBUM CLOSELY!!! They aren't talking about getting "hoochies" and "blastin" people. Instead of boasting about the size of their bank accounts these two Mc's found pride in the size of their intellects. To alot of people this era was just a fad. But for some of us, hip-hop served as an awakening. It inspired us to reach beyond our everyday reality and grab something that was transcendent and more real than the gross materialism that present day hip-hop has come to represent. I'm still hip-hop!! It wasn't just a fad!!! Thanks, UMC's for shining a little light into the darkness!!!!!

A Fruitful Blend.......2005-03-30
1991 The U.M.C.'s, Hass G and Kool Kim, debuted with their Fruits Of Nature with the popular roller rink jam "Blue Cheese". Lead by Hass G though Kool Kim is more charismatic and energetic lyrically compared to his partner. Produced entirely by Hass G & RNS with clean, crisp beats from big band sound, jazz, and thier groovy piano chords to create a unique sound full of life. "Kraftworks" is a standout where it starts off with Hass G as Kool Kim take it to another altitude as like "Swing It To The Area" when the beat changes to a more simple kick, snare, and scratches that makes the song instantly take us to a real hip-hop feel. A tale of life's journey on "Morals" they both describe the choices and struggles. Fruits Of Nature doesn't contain sexuality, violence or explicit lyrics. Hass and Kim do have a couple of classics on here with "One To Grow On" and "Blue Cheese". This release is just fun, happy listening that today's music is missing.
Still? After all these years???.......2005-01-17
I truly am amazed that I repeatedly find this album on a tape and then play the bejesus out of it and then let it go, but like a broken clock that is right twice a day, I find this tape and am like "Wow"...Here goes the cycle...I play it repeatedly for a couple of weeks and then I forget about it and then let's start the process over again...
fruits of nature.......2003-10-26
This is the UMC's debut album, the UMC's are Hass G and Kool Kim,they are very imaginative, they have true lyrical flow, When it came to the music, co-producers Hass G and RNS decked it out in vintage soul and old Blue Note-styled tracks, with reams of obscure, idiosyncratic vocal samples tossed in as hooks, breaks, and bridges. Ya better check it out they have an amazing flow so just buy it!!!!!. the resulting effort is yet another vastly underrated rap album out of those banner years in hip-hop, sad but true......
Mellow.......2001-11-29
This is the definition of smooth, relaxing hip-hop music. I used to listen to this years ago and it never got repetitious. Each song is a standout, my personal favorite was kraftworks. To one of the previous reviewers, they did release a follow up around '97 or so. It was their attempt at a hardcore album, not good, although it wasn't terrible. It just wasn't their style. Anyways, if you like laid back, catchy, melodic hip hop, then this is a must have in your collection.
Fruits of Nature tastes good...........2000-07-06
The UMC's were one of the freshest and stylish hip-hop groups in their 1 month of fame back in 1991. These guys knew how to throw down the beats accompanied with flawless lyricism that easily separated them from the rest. "One to Grow On" and "Blue Cheese" are easily hip-hop classics, and so are the UMCs...I never knew the Fruits of Nature tasted this good.

A unique French stylist.......2005-12-09
These old hill-and-dale Pathés Saphir are noisy and erratic and even that magician Ward Marston, who has done so much wonderful work making historic recordings sound as good as possible, cannot make that much with them. It is nonetheless very much worth the bother, because Clément was one of the most elegant stylists in the history of singing-certainly singing on records-and every one of these items is wonderful. I particularly love the Berlioz: this music is simply never well performed any more, especially by the voice for which it was intended, the tenor voice.
In opéra comique and, especially, in the art song of the Victorian era, Clément was unique: the chimeric tenderness and poetry of his singing, the perfect French enunciation, the really creative musicianship. His light voice, clear and perfectly placed, was nothing special. Everything else about his singing was.
