Amazon.com's Best of 2000

Talib Kweli is probably the only MC who could do justice to "For Women," Nina Simone's righteous, ragged battle cry, and he does so with his cover on Reflection Eternal. That cut illustrates this album's timeless quality, its personal poeticism, and its strength. Kweli's lyrical skills have only improved over time, approaching the stuff of legend. And producer Hi-Tek's supple grooves balance the wordcraft perfectly. --Lizz Mendez Berry

Amazon.com

Silencing any suggestions that he's any less capable than his more high-profile Black Star partner Mos Def, Talib Kweli, along with DJ Hi-Tek, crafts a masterful debut with Reflection Eternal. Like Mos, Kweli displays an impressive range of styles and sensibilities--whether popping party lyrics on "Move Something," reflecting on the mysteries of the heart for "Love," or musing on hip-hop's death and rebirth for "Good Mourning." In comparison to Mos Def's status as a new funk soul brother, Kweli's more of a b-boy bookworm--erudite and articulate, but he can also let fly with fire and spark on the mic anytime. DJ Hi-Tek finally gets to show off his full range of production ability with a blend of hot, aggressive tracks ("Blast") and relaxed groovers ("Memories"). As good a debut as you could ask for. --Oliver Wang

5 out of 5 stars Talib Kweli and Hi Teck Makes You Want To "Move Somethin" (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5 stars).......2007-01-31

You can argue that Talib Kweli & DJ Hi Teck are the best emcee and DJ duo since Pete Rock & CL Smooth. When I first discovered them was when I was at home listening to the Music Choice Rap Channel, when the song "This Means You" popped on. That song alone wanted me to go and get that album, because of it's excellent wordplay by Kweli and Mos Def, with the production of Hi Teck.

There is not much I can say that already hasn't been said, seeing the average rating is at it's max. As I mentioned before, Kweli's rhymes are superior to hear. Being as young as I was at the time this dropped (around 14 or 15), trust me, I've never heard someone rhyme like that before. A perfect example where Kweli runs free on the mic is the song "Some Kind Of Wonderful". Another track that stood out was "The Blast" where even Hi Teck spits a verse that is also dope (the video had Talib doing two verses, but that is not on here. I'm kinda mad, since this is reissued).

Guest appearances are dope as well. My favorite would be Xzibit and Rah Digga popping up for the song "Down For The Count". Another would be the De La Soul contributed verses in "Soul Rebels". Production is also excellent by Hi Teck. Some of the song here are kind of laid back to listen to, but you can easily catch a vibe towards them.

"Reflection Eternal" (or "Train Of Thought" to some people) is one album that I can enjoy on many levels again and again. I remember listening to this album back in high school, and only a hand full of people knew who these guys were. If you ever get a chance, pick this us. The production on here is soothing and can clear your mind. If you are not familiar with Kweli, you might want to check out "Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star". I just found out Hi Teck was in a group called Mood back in '97 and will listen to that as well. Arguably one of the best that came out of Rawkus. Word up.

5 out of 5 stars Reflection Eternal/Train of Thought: Best CD you've never heard of.......2006-12-20

One of the best albums I've ever heard, I'd give it 6 stars if Amazon let me. With the exception of Gangstarr (though I think Kweli is lyrically superior to Guru), I have never heard an MC and producer mesh so effortlessly on a consistent basis like Kweli and Hi-Tek. This is a CD I put in and listen to without touching a button.

Both Talib and Hi-Tek display impressive versatility in their respective trades, starting the CD with a party track like "Move Something," then moving to songs like "Memories Live," and "Love Language". You see Hi-Tek's jazz influence in songs like "Love Speakeasy," and "Good Mourning,". I also love the Nina Simone samples. The bonus track "For/Four Women," is a song which chronicles the trials and tribulations of Black Women since they arrived to this country centuries ago. Finally, on a personal note, "The Blast" is my favorite song in the whole wide world. Not saying you should care, but that tells you how I feel about this CD. I will listen to this when I'm 50 years old and I have no doubt about that.

That being said, it absolutely KILLS me that Kweli later comes out with LPs like "Quality" and "Beautiful Struggle," and gets very few to no tracks from Hi-Tek. It boggles my mind. When you look at the results of Reflection Eternal/Train of Thought and Blackstar, it becomes clear that the duo makes great and refreshingly intelligent music. In today's rap climate, that is clearly not the norm. I don't have an afro and I don't wear Cowrie shells or dashikis, but yes, it is great to hear rap music of some substance, celebrating black music and black people. I still treasure my copies of Reasonable Doubt, Illmatic and Life After Death, but this one's also in my special CD case...

5 out of 5 stars The CD is a blast.......2006-10-09

I love the concious rap, the nature of it is so real. I can go by these tracks because of what they represent; the essence. The top 5 songs of the album:
1 The Blast
2 move somthin
3 Down for the Count
4 Good Mourning
5 Eternalists

5 out of 5 stars Very impressive........2006-09-01

I'm always up for intelligent hip-hop, and "Reflection Eternal/Train Of thought" is filled to the brim with creative rhymes, head-bobbing beats, and powerful messages. For example, "Too Late" is a song that mourns hip-hop's downfall. "Nowadays rap artists coming half-hearted/Commercial like pop or underground like black markets/Where were you the day hip-hop died?" It's so true it's almost eerie. Plus, the beat is amazing.

Another note-worthy song is "Name of the Game". An amazing piano sample plays in the backround, and Talib's crazy MC skills are practically jaw-dropping:

"'The name of the game is..'
Persistance, dedication
Consistant motivation
Resistance to stagnation of information
Distribute it free to the entire population
No hesitation
Makin it public
No privitazation from corporations"

Genius!! Seriously, no true hip-hop collection is complete without this gem. "RE/TOT" is sure to be remembered for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Brought a tear to my eye!.......2006-05-31

This is an absolutely amazing album created by the reflection eternal. Another release that focuses on making classic songs that mean something positive to people. Songs that you can play twenty years from now and they are still dope and relevent to your life. Support emcees that have talent, not materialistic artists that make songs that will help you into a jail cell.

What a great collection of hits. This is my first HI-TEK CD, so I have nothing to compare it to. There are so many good tracks on this cd and each one has its own feel and originality. Josephine is a stand out track as well as many others. BUY IT.

4 out of 5 stars Stay Up On Your Teknology.......2007-04-20

I am gonna keep it short and sweet. You need to get this CD in your rotation because when you start hearing other CDs compared to this you will start to appreciate the diversity and depth of the tracks. Hi Tek keeps the beats fresh and the guests bring lyrical firepower.

    Top 5 tracks:
-"Keep it Moving" feat. Q-tip, Kurupt, & Dion
-"Jospehine" feat. Willie Cottrell Band, Ghostface Killah & Pretty Ugly
-"Where it Started At" feat. Dion, Jadakiss, Papoose, Talib Kweli & Raekwon
-"Let it Go" feat. Dion & Talib Kweli
-"Music" feat. J. Dilla, Nas, Common, Busta Rhymes & Marsha Ambrosius

    Don't get caught without it!!!

3 out of 5 stars Hi-Tek Falls short of previous CD.......2007-04-05

Hi-Tek one of the hot producers out there, falls a little short on this colaboration. Most of the beats are hot and the production is decent overall but the overall experience lacks that hard-hitting hip-hop feel from the 1st CD. Takes a while to grow on you. Too many slow jams.

5 out of 5 stars Keep it movin' ! .......2007-01-10

Hi-tek hit it out the ballpark with this one baby! Production is insane and amazingly he matches all the guest appearances with the right beat, favourite song would have to be "Josephene" with Ghostface who is extremely on point with his verses! Definetly one of the better releases of the year...

On his debut solo album, Hi-Teknology, Cincinnati producer Hi-Tek brings together some of hip-hop's most innovative lyricists to complete his multilayered musical collages. Hi-Tek made his name producing for Black Star and Reflection Eternal, creating impressive tracks that were always as complex as the rhymes that Mos Def and Talib Kweli rhymed over them. On Hi-Teknology, however, he's not limited to the range of just two MCs, and each track is fashioned to custom fit the artists featured. "The Sun God," featuring Common and Vinia Mojica, is a musical composition that is nothing short of perfect. Common is at his poetic best, telling a moving story over Hi-Tek's soulful production, which blends unidentifiable sounds to create an atmosphere that has a mysterious story of its own. "Breakin' Bread" is an archetypal hip-hop track with a hazy flute sample that gives the song a jazzy feel. And the funky production on the risqué "L.T.A.H.," featuring Slum Village, will transport listeners to the '70s. With Hi-Teknology, Hi-Tek secures his place among the great producers by bringing serious musicianship to hip-hop production and creating a truly satisfying album. --Felicia A. Wilks

4 out of 5 stars Good Hip Hop Album for everyone !!!.......2006-09-28

Really good production and Dj. Good Hip Hop mood !

3 out of 5 stars Solo Debut only in Name. (***1/2).......2005-11-10

When I first heard Move Somethin fire up on Train of Thought from Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek as the duo Reflection Eternal, I knew I was hearing a Producer and MC that would continue to do big things.

With Talib breaking away and concentrating on solo releases (that have never really lived up to the standard set on Train of Thought) Hi-Tek also furthered himself by doing beats for a myriad of different players within the game such as No Thang On Me from Snoops R & G to It's Going Down from the Blackalicious album Blazing Arrow and also beats for the likes of The Hieroglyphics to name but a few.

It was only a matter of time before Hi-Tek took the opportunity to use the, no doubt, expansive contacts he's created during his time on the production circuit and Hi-Teknology is that in a nut-shell. I always find that it can be very hard for a producer to create an album that will be looked on in years to come as something that represents or expresses a period of time, or an album that gives us an underling story, concept and or feeling that they may in particular wish to portray when they work with a wide gamut of Mc's of varying talent. The album has it's highs and lows it's lowest being jinx da juvy, I'm not even sure that's how you spell it but honestly it's not even worth the effort or research to get it right, that would be giving the man too much. His song seems completely lost in what are generally much more introspective and relaxed rhymes and I would have to ask myself what was Tek thinking, however viewing his movents on the circuit as of late i.e. working on The Game album Documentary and Snoops Pop-Hop R & G I should be surprised there isn't more of this general nonsense. Still the album shines past these brief moments to give us Tracks like Sun God & The Illest It Gets. Teks production is as always unmistakable however in the long run for me it would of been more exciting to see Tek step away from pushing other artists up and let himself take the spotlight. He deserves it.

4 out of 5 stars Tek mixes it up with mixed results..........2004-11-20

Hi-Tek...not much can be said. He has produced beats for everyone from Talib and Mos to Snoop and the Eastsidaz. His beats are perfect for Talib but on this album they fit everyone well. He even tries his hand at some R&B with a track from Jonell "Round & Round" which is one of the better songs on this album. Hi-Tek delivers a mixture of his typical raw organic production and some more commercial styled beats. The first song, featuring Common, is a very dope cut as are the Cormega, Talib, and Mos tracks. This album is a good album, better than a lot of the crap out there but it really feels like a compilation more than one artists album. The beats are hot and most of the rappers are on point. It is also nice to see the boot camp click comin back, Tek brings buckshot back for "Illest It Gets". This is a good album but I think Tek should have saved these beats and made another Reflection Eternal album instead.

4 out of 5 stars Cats are sleep on this Natti producer.......2004-10-06

I recommend this album for two words "Hi" and "Tek"! This cat is as real as it comes. He has an all-star(that's if you on the "real" hip-hop scene) lineup along with his tight, and signature beats. Only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the CD wasn't long enough for me. I guess I'm greedy. But on the really real you gotta feel Tek, if not, you'z a hater, dats real. But to really feel him, I mean really, you gotta get Train of Thought, Quality, Black Star, and The Beautiful Struggle. Hi-Tek defines real hip-hop, just like the old Hulk Hogan represents real wrestling. Now get back at your boy about that!

Wow!!! I've had this CD for some time now. It is one CD that I can listen to in its entirety without skipping tracks. Every cut is superb. Talib Kweli is probably the most lyrical MC in Hip Hop today. I've been listening to Hip Hop since the SugarHill Gang and I have to say that this CD is my all time favorite.

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-10-10

This CD is so good i had a hard time picking out which track to listen to first. "This Means You"? Or "Eternalists"? I just didn't know. The hidden track entitled "For Women" is an excellent song. With the ill lyrics of Talib Kweli and the producing/DJ of Hi-Tek, you can't lose on this album. "Good Mourning", explains death and how some people a afraid to die. "This Means You", features Mos Def and is an excellent track explaining how things have changed and telling you to get up and do something about it. "Down for the Count" features Xzibit and Rah Digga and goofs on commercial artists. If you like ungerground hip-hop or looking for something to listen to thats worth its money, put down Lil' Bow Wow and grab a copy of Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek's "Reflection Eternal" (Train of Thought). I'm out for now, peace.

Talib Kweli and DJ Hi Tek. What more can be said about the dynamic duo. They're collaboration together is just blazing. Nearly every song offers something that either makes your head nod and booty shake, mellows you out as Kweli flows over a silky smooth beat that only a producer with the prowress of Hi Tek could create, or, the music makes you do something that is rare in Hip Hop now-a-days, it makes you think. In my book, Kweli is one of the last lyricists that rhyme about something besides material possesions along with the likes of Mos Def(whose album "Black On Both Sides" is essential), Common, ect. Bottom line, if you don't have it get. Its a shame he doesn't get more air time than he does on BET or the radio, especially since he reps black people to the fullest, but that's my opinion.Cop It!

5 out of 5 stars perfect - or maybe near off..........2001-04-02

I have never listened to a CD and got this strange feeling of wanting to listen to it for an hour or 2 on end. Hi tek is truely on point with sum out-of-this-world production and Kweli is outstanding dilivering such heavy lyrics. The duo are soul mates in music terms and have kept hip hop to the standard that it sould be. A classic on its own that should never be under-rated.

    5 out of 5 stars Reflected Eternally.......2001-03-15

From the hard hitting horns laced on Move Somethin' to the deep, soulful melodies on For Women, Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek show why they named their album Reflection Eternal. Kweli's fluid rhyming skills along deep issues paired with Hi-Tek's skillful production form a cohesive work rarely found today. REFLECTION ETERNAL IS TRULY A MODERN DAY HIP-HOP MASTERPIECE!

First of all, this first reviewer obviously doesn't realize that she is reviewing a c.d., and not an African American songwriting family tree. This song is worth buying because it is not of the new rap-styles of heavy beats and other strong electronica. Also, you can hear a young rapper from Cincinnati early on, before he gets big, and be able to say "Damn, I remember when he was coming up, now That was a good cd". Besides, The 'Nnati is about to blow up, get in on it while you can. first this, next RAM-Z, then who knows. Watch out Atlanta! So, for the first reviewer, spend less time boring us, and more time at the dentist.

This CD has its moments but it's not the best of the best. I'm glad to say that Nonye Akuba was acknowledged for her part in this CD but I wish that it had been as good as Talib Kweli's other works. It lacks spark-appeal though the lyrics are pretty good and it is easy listening, which is saying something for when dealing with rap over all. It is still a one start song in my opinion but it is growing on me with each passing month.

When I found out Hi Tek was releasing a debut album on his own, I circled the date on my calendar. Once I got it, I immediately loved the results. It didn't have to grow on me or go through repeated listenings, it was instantly dope.If you're at all familiar with Tek's pedigree, then you know the production is dope. Throw in guest shots from artists like Mos Def, the overlooked Vinia Mojica, Common, Slum Village, Cormega, Talib Kweli, & Buckshot and you have a must have lp on your hands. Even the lesser known artists hold it down.

As far as skip material goes, I could only think of two or three songs. I never really dug Jinx Da Juvy's flow on "Where I'm From". In fact, the entire song is written poorly. "L.T.A.H." is good, but I've never been that big a fan of T3, so I tend to fast forward over his part. Also, I would've loved if "Tony Guitar Watson" was longer than one minute -- it's still dope though. The rest of the album is golden.

Hi-Teknology is a dope release from Rawkus. Hi Tek's beats were always on point back when this dropped and this album fell right in line with most of the expectations. It was quickly reissued as is well worth the price of admission. I recommend adding this to your music library.

Standout Tracks: Breakin' Bread feat. Donte, Main Flow, Brian Digby Jr, & Crunch (My Favorite), All I Need Is You feat. Cormega & Jonell, Get Ta Steppin' feat. Mos Def & Vinia Mojica, The Sun God feat. Common, The Illest It Gets feat. Buckshot, and Round & Round Feat. Jonell
