Newman Once Again Weaves A Masterpiece of Beauty and Dispair.......2007-07-24
What a musical masterpiece! Newman impresses me with each and every score he puts out. Meet Joe Black, Road To Perdition, Little Women... All masterpieces. This is one to put up there with the best, Newman can charm you with his consitently quirky plucked strings and percussion, and the next moment have you in chills and tears from a fully orchestrated drama piece.
If you love Newman or good film music, buy this!
Haunting, Majestic, Beautiful.......2007-07-09
The score for 'The Shawshank Redemption' was the first Thomas Newman score I ever heard, and it remains one of my favorites now, many years later.
I remember seeing the movie (I was one of the few who saw it in the theatre on its original run), and early on when the first aerial shots of Shawshank Prison appear onscreen, accompanied by the 'Stoic Theme' from the score, I felt that the movie had found its voice. As much as Morgan Freeman's melodious narration drives the story of the film, Newman's music drive the emotional heart from beginning to end.
The music is beautiful to listen to by itself -- haunting and majestic where it needs to be, but also more intimate and soft in its quieter moments. It never goes over the top with its sentimentality or dramatic tone, relying on subtle cues to convey menace, or friendship, or danger, and in the end, hope.
Like all good music for film should (a goal rarely realized), Newman's score conveys the message of the movie perfectly. It accompanies the events on screen, but it also enhances them, adds just the right tone, and really brings it to the heart of the viewer. It is safe to say that the film would not have been the same without such an accomplished and thoughtful score. In this case, it is even more true than usual -- the score is what helps to make the film so great, and with different music, the film itself would be lessened.
Thomas Newman has built a career out of creating music that is unique and moving, somehow always putting his signature on it without ever regurgitating themes or reusing the same ideas for different films. Even in such a distinguished body of work, filled with great music that moves the soul, Newman's score for 'The Shawshank Redemption' remains, fittingly, a shining moment.
Shawshank Sountrack.......2007-05-13
The film is fabulous and was in need of a brilliant soundtrack to capture the incredibly painful journey of Andy Dufresne. Who can manage such a task? Why, Thomas Newman of course! Newman carefully navigates Andy's world with gentle artist's touch. Worth adding to your collection!
Nice..........2006-08-12
Newman has really made a nice soundtrack here. Pieces like "Brooks Was Here" and "Compass and Guns" may have very similiar sounds/styles, but they serve to give the movie the deep somberness that can move you.
I highly recommend this one
My all-time favorite film & score.......2006-06-20
This is probably my all-time favorite film, mainly because director Frank Darabont is an absolutely incredible storyteller (see also "The Green Mile" and "The Majestic").
The film wouldn't be nearly as powerful without this amazing soundtrack. The disc is great from start to finish, but my two favorite tracks on the CD are taken from (what I believe) are the two most emotional scenes in the whole movie: Andy tells Red about his dream of "Zihuantenejo"; and the flashback which shows how Andy pulled off his risky escape, thus the "Shawshank Redemption."

It would be easy to pass off this latest Jars of Clay release as a marketing gimmick, especially as more and more Christian artists are turning to casting age-old hymns in their own creative image. Has the modern praise-and-worship songwriting well run dry or are artists truly looking back over time to gain that "renewed and refreshed perspective" as Jars describes this effort in the liner notes for Redemption Songs? The thoughtful listener will quickly discover that the latter is true. Jars of Clay's acoustic, organic sound is an ideal approach to presenting "very old words set to almost completely modern music" as never once does the music overshadow the power of the words. The band captures the essence of hope and joy in tracks "God Will Lift Up Your Head," "It Is Well With My Soul," and the rousing "Nothing But the Blood," aided by the great Blind Boys of Alabama. On the other side of the emotional spectrum, the needful ache of man seeking God is well captured with melancholic "I Need Thee Every Hour" and "Hiding Place." Other special guest appearances by Sarah Kelly on "I'll Fly Away" and Delirious' Martin Smith on "Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder" all fit well within the reverential mood of this marvelous release. If this record doesn't renew and refresh you, it may be time to check your pulse. --Michael Lyttle

Not very redeeming.......2007-07-24
I wanted this CD to be some of the old hymns sung with all the verses in the original tune, but it wasn't.
There were too few "Old" Redemption Songs, and odd music, with most the song being the chorus repeated..
over...and over...and over...
I only hear one of the songs on the radio.... just not what I was thinking it would be .....
Classics with a new generation twist.......2007-07-07
Many of the classics with a New Generation Twist. I enjoy the added instruments to the oldies. Jars of Clay does a great job. My favorite is "Fly Away".
Soft/country rock is nice alternative (but no substitute).......2007-05-13
If you're looking for a traditional treatment of classic hymns, don't buy this album. But if you enjoy the lyrics of these old hymns and you are open to a slightly different take, try this CD. I grew up with traditional hymns and love them very much. There are no substitutes for those, but this album is a really nice alternative. I appreciate the fact that it's not too worship-y, by which I mean praise phrases are not repeated incessantly. The music is nice, with a bit of a soft rock and sometimes a country rock flare.
I have another JOC album but wouldn't call myself a true fan. There is actually very little Christian music that I like because it is too poppy and praisy. But I very much appreciate this album and rate it 5 stars. (As for my general musical tastes, I love classic rock, followed by alternative rock.)
A praise album of substance.......2007-04-05
By turns rockin' and mellow, this album is always deeply felt music of traditional worship songs and spirituals, given an injection of modern energy and color by a group of real musicians with soul. Even the "weaker" songs grow on one with time. A keeper.
Super Duper.......2007-02-20
If you enjoy old hymns with a little more peppy pace - this is for you.

Album Description
Redemption was founded in Los Angeles in 2000 by guitarist, keyboardist and songwriter Nicolas van Dyk. Ray Alder of Fates Warning joined them and they released two metal albums of melodic complexity. Both albums received amazing reviews throughout the media and fans all over the world had fallen in love with their fresh and energetic style. The Origins of Ruin emphasises once again their unique musical skills. Complex songwriting combined with melodic heaviness, Redemption play Melodic Progressive Metal the way it should be!
Customer Reviews:
Pleasant (and intense) surprise........2007-06-29
I was very disappointed with the first two (overrated) Redemption releases, but this is stellar. Far more inspired and interesting than the relatively mundane earlier efforts. The songwriting has matured, while Alder's melodic vocals float atop intense, addictive riffs and intricate polyrhythms. The newfound complexity and polish has this in the running for a top 3 prog album of the year.
Far better than anything Redemption has done to date and superior to anything Fates Warning has released since the incomparable aPSoG.
excellent prog metal.......2007-06-01
this album is great, i bought my copy a few weeks ago and i have been enjoying it sinse. the vocalist is very good. so dont listen to the review some moron wrote. and the musicianship is outstanding. very tight and very catchy. heavy and melodic perogressive madness! and what a great drummer! also full of great memorible guitar melodies, leads, and agressive and beautiful soaring solos. so i highly recommend this album, to prog fans and even just good old metal heads that like good musicianship. fans of dream theater, symphony x, or even bands like soilwork and mercenary will enjoy this!
Again a super album from a talented band called Redemption.......2007-05-12
And with this third album Redemption will do it again.
Fans of progressive Heavy Metal eat your heart out, if you like the voice of Fates Warning, Ray Alder is singing his lungs out on this album, super Super SUPER!!!
The great song writing of Nicolas van Dyk will bring you in a marvelous journey of heavy riffs, great solo's of Agent Steel's guitar player 'Bernie Versailes', pounding bass and great drums.
But don't forget the master himself on keys and guitar, Nicolas.
So, if you will do yourself a pleasure, buy this album and stay HEAVY!!!
What Fates Warning should be doing.......2007-05-08
I am a huge FW fan and I think w. the direction their last few albums have been I would of preferred to hear something like this instead of FWX. Not that FWX was bad but this seems to at least have some steam where FW seem to be stripping things down rather than the dizzying complexity. Sorry to rant on the FW kick but these guys are very parallel (no pun intended) to the Fates sound. Cool medoldic prog metal w/ high pitched vox, lyrics about emotions and interesting time changes and moods.
Great Melodic/Power Prog Metal.......2007-05-04
I enjoyed this album. The surprising thing was I let a couple of friends listen to it and they immediately said that they liked it, too.
I prefer the opening 4 tracks, although the last 4 tracks are really growing on me with repeated listens.
Great vocals and the best album for me since Symphony X's Odyssey.

Fates Warning Fans Take Note!.......2007-05-14
I gave this disc 4 Stars instead of five because some of the lyrics are a little cheezy. (Are you really hoping for the "Ghost of a second chance"?) Having said that, the disc is outstanding. The songs are tight and the edge is hard. It reminds me quite a bit of Fates' "Disconnected". I would choose this over "Origins" by the same band, but both are great. I still think Ray Alder is the best lead singer going today.
Pushes the boundaries and sets new standards.......2007-03-28
Let me tell you: This is one monster of an album. It pushes the boundaries of rock music in several ways and sets new standards for progressive rock. Now let me tell you why I think that this is such an amazing album:
First, the concept. It's about a person - it could be me or you - who midway through life experiences that his/her life falls apart. Everything falls into doubt. All emotions peak - agony, despair, sorrow, rage, release - the fullness of time.
Second, the composition. Well, what can I say: overwhelming, at first. Everything is pushed to its limit, and beyond. Pressed to find a genre designation, I would say: melodic heavy metal. But then I have to add that this is very intelligent music. There is some thrash, but it doesn't take over; it substantiates the music. And there's plenty of beautiful melody and ingenious riffs.
The person behind the concept and composition is Nick van Dyk. We haven't heard much of him yet, but you can be certain that he is setting his mark on rock music. He's trained as a classical pianist. This shows in Fullness, as there's some fine piano playing underlying the frenzied guitars and binding together the four parts of the title piece.
Third, the vocals. Ray Alder. Need I say more? Everything this guy touches, he turns to gold. Listen e.g. to his gripping vocals on Fates Warning's "A Pleasant Shade of Gray".
Fourth, the musicianship. Nick, Ray, Bernie Versailles, James Sherwood, and Chris Quirarte. All fabulous musicians in their own right, but when they get together in Redemption, wonders happen. Most of the music goes at a pretty wild pace, but it's precise and punchy. A lot of fine details emerge with many listens. Nick and Bernie complement each other nicely, as Nick has the atmospheric solos and Bernie has the stinging ones. James keeps the show together and occasionally, during the quieter passages, says hi gently. Chris' drums are all over the place in a very exciting way.
Fifth, the production. As good as it gets, crystal clear. Trust Tommy Newton, and now, seemingly, Nick van Dyk. I was especially happy to hear Ray's voice coming out so clearly with all its marvelous facets.
Sixth, the illustrations. These are the work of Travis Smith. On the front cover, there's a man who gives the impression of having just fallen from Heaven, or, more symbolically, having awakened to the human condition. On the back cover, it's as if he's saying: Almighty God, I surrender to You. In-between, there is: the fullness of time. On the inner cover, there is, in a true Michelangelan sense, first two hands that reach out for each other, then two hands that have found each other. Ingenious.
Ok, the lyrics. This is the major beef among Amazon reviewers. Let's put it this way: They're very good, but not outstanding, which does make them the weak limb in this production. For people somewhat literate, we've pretty much heard it all before. And as T. Lemos notes, they're narrative, not poetic. However, Nick wanted them to be introspective, and that they are.
Fullness Of Time is a slow grower, because it's dense. With time it will be widely acknowledged to be in a select class together with Abbey Road, Dark Side Of The Moon, Zep II, and A Pleasant Shade of Gray.
It has been an unbelievable struggle for Nick van Dyk to make Fullness the masterpiece it is, and without the help of experienced buddies like Ray Alder and Tommy Newton, it would have been a vain effort. Now, under the knowledgeable aegis of Intromental (I know 'em) and InsideOut, conditions should be favorable for the Redemption guys, and we can hope to hear more great music from them.
AMAZING.......2007-03-23
UNBELIEVABLE MUSIC--UNBELIEVABLE LYRICS
IF YOU LIKE METAL WITH GREAT MELODY THIS IS A MUST
Technically proficient Progressive Metal........2007-02-16
This was a really tough album for me to rate. On the one hand the musicianship is excellent throughout, there are some great time changes and progressive elements that keep me returning for more. But every so often the progressive tendencies overwhelm the actual song and the direction sounds random and directionless. Not to mention the lead singer is both good and annoying in equal measures. The good vocals make him sound as if he could be nailing Kansas cover tunes while the bad sections sound almost Nu-Metal. For the record, I consider Nu-Metal to be a decaying heap of vile refuse. Maybe it is that he sounds so young, or perhaps it may be the occassionally ridiculous lyrical content (see the epic song "Sapphire" for loads of relationship nonsense). That is easily my least favorite track here, though as I mentioned before there are moments everywhere, even on this song, that are impressive nonetheless. I recommend this album for its many merits, mostly the intelligent Progressive Metal aspects that push the listener into a state of unwavering focus. This is a solid Progressive Metal album, flawed and a bit rough around the edges, but still worth obtaining.
Fantastic stuff..but.........2006-04-06
Oh my god, the lyrics are horrible! Cliche after cliche! The music is still excellent, though, thankfully. If you can ignore them buy this CD. It's still worth owning.

One of the most promising of Peter Gabriel's Real World label protégés came not from some dusty, Third World village, but from that American tire and rubber mecca, Akron, Ohio. But while Arthur's previous Gabriel-inspired adventures netted him considerable critical kudos and even a `99 Grammy nod for his self-created album art, he turns an even neater trick here. The frameworks for Arthur's 16 poetic, alternately introspective and impressionistic songs may be more firmly rooted in traditional folk and singer-songwriter formula than ever, but the influence of Gabriel seems even more pronounced on the album's evocative, often hypnotic sonic textures. Densely layered yet deceptively organic, it's a record of endless production subtleties in service of songs that trickle and dart like a playful stream of consciousness. Whether putting his own peculiar spin on romantic foibles in the dirge-turns-anthem "Favorite Girl," the upbeat energy of "Let's Embrace" and "In the Night," or conjuring more intriguing existential imagery on the fragile "You Are the Dark," Arthur has produced an album that reveals itself anew on every listen. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
One of the most creative and engaging singer-songwriters.......2007-07-02
Another great album by one of the most interesting comtemporary singer-songwriters. Joseph Arthur draws of a wide-range of American music influences to create a unique and engaging sound all his own. He also does the art work on this and other albums which is interesting in its own right. If you do not own a Joseph Arther CD - this is an excellent one to start with.
Great album, but all over the place .......2006-10-03
What to say about this album. The bottom line is there are some great, classic songs on here, then there are some not so good song. Luckily the cd has 16 tracks and is 75 minutes long so that even if you weed out the ones you don't like you still have a lot of music to listen to. The problem is this cd has so many different types of songs in it that you really have to be a fan of all music I think to fully enjoy this album all the way through. It seems like he was trying to do a little of everything possible here, having some type of identity crisis or something. If I had to split the songs into seperate categories I would say we would have 1)Classic Joe sound (which is basically him and his guitar with possible drum beat, singing from his heart about past or present girlfriends) 2) pop/emo 3) rock/grunge 4)industrial 5)country
Now I am not a fan of somewhat cheesy pop/emo songs or country, so that makes for a problem for me and this album. I love the classic sound where he just sings his poetry and let's his voice and acoustic guitar work all the beauty, those song mostly comprise of this:
Signature Joe sound: Redemptions son, Honey and the moon, Innocent world, september baby, termite song, favorite girl, and you are the dark.
These are far and away my favorite songs on the album and I can't get enough of them. They take me to a whole new state of mind when I hear them.
Then we have "Nation of slaves" which is kind of grunge ish with kurt cobain type vocals. Then "Permission" which sounds like it could be a nine inch nails song. Not a bad thing at all if you are a fan.
But for me at all gets worse from there. Firs we have the pop/emo songs that just dont' work for me. It's not that they are horrible songs, it just sounds like he is trying to be somebody he is not. Those songs consist of the following :
I would rather hide, evidence, let's embrace, and in the night.
Then finally, my least favorite type of music, country. There are three songs on here that are borderline county songs and just can't listen to them:
Dear lord, blue lips, and you've been loved.
Well there you have it and know you know what to expect. It's worth getting for the songs that you do become passionate about, but be prepared to probably find some you dont' like.
If this was a religious album, I didn't see it........2006-07-08
Why can't the fellow sing about what he pleases? He does it well, you don't feel that he is after your soul, nor to cheat you out of your money. There may have been moments that the artist's faith shined through in his music, but this is certainly not a preachy album and mostly explores those things that people play music to explore. He sings about lost love and broken hearts and broken lives and hope and joy. I bought this with seven other CDs and I was a little afraid because of the alleged religious theme, but it is one of my favorites. The sound is crisp and varied. It has none of the glitziness or fakeness of either CCM or a lot of modern music. You are immediately drawn in. This is a good album, full of good music and good lyrics. I suggest it.
There's something about Joseph Arthur..........2006-01-23
This is probably my favorite Joseph Arthur album he's the kind of artist I think would be an intresting person to meet. He's also the kind of artist you can listen to at night and dream of places you've never been but plain to, or even just hope to visit. On a subtle summer afternoon you can listen to him and almost take joy in the mosquitos biting. You can even listen to him on a hard rainy day and be happy in the midst of a great depression. This musician, on this album especially, has the ability to mellow out any great feelings of sorrow or ectasy and just make you feel content. And you get your moneys worth with eighteen tracks.
And to Vincent, Please, in the future can you refrain from confusing someones beleifs with the quality of their music?
I could listen to this album all night.......2005-12-30
Redemption's Son is the first Joseph Arthur album I purchased. I heard Honey and the Moon on a public radio station and just had to have it...I was sold. I went out expecting this c.d. to be one of those where you pick one or two songs and play them on repeat. I was so wrong. Each song adds something great to this album. I can go through each track and think...I know exactly what he's talking about. Joseph has a beautiful voice and his music is full of emotion and passion. He uses a wide variety of musical backgrounds on this album and the thing I really love about him is how he uses so many different vocal tracks...he uses his voice as much as he does other instruments. In my opinion he's one of the better artists of today.

A beautiful voice - wasted.......2007-07-10
I was introduced to Mary Fahl via October Project. I had never heard anything like them before or since and Fahl's voice is nearly beyond compare with anyone else, though as an earlier reviewer said, Annie Lennox and Carly Simon come close. I just don't think they have Fahl's range.
So, you can imagine after October Project's demise, I was looking forward to hearing more of Fahl. After-all, a voice like that just can't be silenced.
Too bad it wasn't - at least for the garbage on this album. Redemption is probably the only song that shows what she can do with her voice. The rest is just a waste of her talents. God, I certainly hope she does not go down the same road that Karen Carpenter did and make everything she sings sound like a funneral dirge. She's trying very hard with the muck written for this album to do just that. The writing credits alone should have been enough to give it away right there. HOW many people does it take to write ONE song? Apparently as many as want to have a say in it for this disaster. Listen, if you start getting more than two people tossing in their two cents worth on any one song, you had better consider not writing it, much less trying to sing it. It is going to sound like a collage of miss-matched ideas and influences. Gee - just like most of the music (if you can call it that) on this album! I certainly hope that Mary Fahl will be able to find another record label willing to take her on when her current one dumps her for this waste of money and resources - with the priviso of course that all she does is sing the songs a talented songwriter creates for her.
only 3 good song.......2007-01-11
still, october proyect is the best and her voice is the best, but this cd is not the greates but think about if you like her and then buy it.
Beautiful and Perfect.......2007-01-09
The more I listen to this cd the more I am entranced with it. I have enjoyed Mary Fahl's voice since October Project. I am eagerly awaiting some more new material. She has a very powerful and touching voice. I gain something new each time I listen to her voice, music and lyrics. Thank you Mary!
Emotional Voice.......2006-06-09
Since when the founder October Project came to an end, Mary's voice was already one one of the highlights of the band. And this is proved here. A very good debut album!
Style departure.......2005-08-14
Like previous reviewers, I too was sceptical about this CD."The
Great Unknown" seems to be an October Project track right off, billowing, inspiring and lush, you would never know the difference. It is my favorite. The rest of the songs really take a departure in style from what I am used to hearing from Mary. Though enjoyable, she seems to be searching for an audience. I hope she continues to put out sounds which can inspire and provoke thought in their writing without getting too sentimental. Pretty girl, great voice, don't let them change your style.

Beautiful.......2007-07-06
What a record ! I haven't listened to them for a long time, but now this has become one of my favourite. Awesome production, brilliant throughout the way. Some majestic, satanic greatness is revealed by adding two top musicians who shred just awesome heart-ripping solos. Listen to "Homage For Satan", you'll understand ! What beautiful melodies. This record stands out breaking the cliches and the monotony of other bands. This one mixes the specific Deicide sound with new, incredible creative guitars and wonderful melodic solos. Get it !
Deicide moving up!.......2007-05-25
I just got this Cd and heard it. I'll say this you can tell it is certainly produced better and the joining of the two new guitar players made a big difference in the way Deicide sounds overall. Lyrically it is mostly then same Benton hooray about his hate for God and everything Christian but that is his problem. I'm still not convinced to be a devil worshipper. Anyway otherwise this is probaly the best Deicide album been made.
Deiwow.......2007-05-12
This by far has to be the best album Deicide has ever produced. I have tried to listen to previous Deicide albums in the past but never saw the genious behind them. I was actually skeptical upon purchasing this album but I had heard such praise I had to buy it. This album does not disappoint. I now have respect for Deicide after hearing this cd. This actually has to be one of the best death metal albums in my collection. Everything came together on this album. The song writing is tight. Every song on here is great.I think another reason the album was so great is because of Ralph Santolla and Jack Owen. These guys are a great guitar duo. Buy this cd without hesitation. I think the only problem with this cd is I listen to it too much.
A slight change of style for original Tampa Bay metal monsters Deicide.......2007-04-08
With the departure of the Hoffman brothers, Glen Benton has acquired himself two worthy replacements in the form of Ralph Santolla (ex-Iced Earth) and Jack Owen (classic Cannibal Corpse era). Now don't get me wrong, the Hoffman brothers will be missed, as they had a sound that was instantly recognizable. But Santolla and Owen also make their own mark on 'The Stench of Redemption' with an almost melodic battery of riffs that add a new dimension to the Deicide sound. Steve Asheim delivers his pinpoint-accurate, speed-of-sound drumming as always. And Glen Benton seems to command a better vocal mix here than on predecessor album 'Scars of the Crucifix'. Definitely among the best death metal releases of 2006.
A new lineup for Deicide proves to record their most provocative album to date..........2007-03-28
In an era where every single CD (despite of its strengths and weaknesses) has a tag line with "brutal" in it, Deicide is truly one of the few bands deserving of a brutal title.
This isn't just the best release since maybe Serpents of the Light. This is simply the best thing Deicide has ever created. With the addition of Jack Owen and Ralph Santolla on guitars, some true guitar skills have been added to the band. Where as the Hoffman brothers just spit out riffs written by Asheim and Benton. This album has the best production, fastest playing, and a surprising totally melodic aspect. Tons of harmonies and Meldodies without ever sounding compromised, sold-out, or softer in their appeal. Ripping solos with a lot of classical influence. And unlike all modern technical death metal, Deicide remain true to the straight-ahead classic death...but never get boring. In fact this album has more diversity than most death metal albums. The drumming isn't just one constant blast beat from opening to ending like everything else these days. Glen Benton's vocals are more brutal than ever (and he never tires with age), with utilization of the 3-Pitch Cobra. It is actually a very unique conquest.
This album is released with Earache which is reputable, as they are one of the few original underground metal labels that hasn't caved-in to signing endless amounts of talentless eye-liner and Castro hat bands.
Deicide have forged the Death Metal path, and still reign as masters. No death-core outfit could ever compare to these true originators.

Tight with these!.......2007-07-09
YO, this is Stephy jey of Goddisciples. This cd was pretty tight. I actually liked it just as much as dichotemy a. I was really feelin the joints and as usual, the beats were raw. They still needa cop some beats from me, but they don't relize it yet.
[...]
Not as good a the last one.......2007-02-01
The CD starts off with a distinctly Southern(read: TN) rap feel. By this I mean heavy beats and somewhat thin loops for the background. The expertise of this duo is not immediately obvious. Around about track 4, things pick up and get back on track to what you would expect. A feature by Canibus was surprising, given the genre. Overall, the CD has the typical 1-3 winners, along with some additional filler.
In a nutshell: Not bad for the money ($5-6), but don't pay more than $9.
Redemption.......2006-12-19
The GRITS have been holding it down for Christian rap for as long as I can remember. With Redemption, they fulfilled their commitment to Gotee and are free to focus on their new record label, 5e Entertainment. While Redemption has some of their characteristic hip but southern sound and showcases their versatile lyrical styles, the first half comes off feeling almost forced which is not acceptable for a group with as much talent as they have. They get it together over the second half though, and deliver a couple of incredible joints which make the album worth having on on their own.
Best cuts: Right Back, Open Bar and We Workin.
Not bad, but not quite up to par with previous work.......2006-12-15
"Redemption" is Grits' final album with Gotee Records, as they will be going independent. This disc is a departure from the mostly rapid-fire pace of the Dichotomy A & B albums which I loved. This disc's slower, more laid back style just doesn't grab me on most cuts. However, the skillful rhyme-spitting and vocal tones are still there for Coffee and Bonafide, and they made a great move in including former LA Symphony member Pigeon John on two cuts, "Open Bar" which features a smooth track and chorus, and "You Said" which features PJ dropping clever sing-song style rhymes in a song about ill-fated relationships. The female backing vocals are also strong, but Pigeon John steals the show on these two tracks. The disc is just ok, but worth having in my opinion even if just for the two previously mentioned songs.
When are they gonna make another Art of Trans?.......2006-11-22
GRitS are at their best when the underlying foundation of a song is a strong (catchy) melody. Witness "They All Fall Down," and "Here We Go." On "Redemption," Coffee and Bone seemed to have abandoned their original purpose of making the most innovative hip-hop in the industry and have made an album that merely bites what is on the playlist of any top 40 rap station in the country. Under the guidance of the production team of Otto Price and Ric Robbins, collectively known as Incorporated Elements, GRitS made their most memorable hits: all of which followed the above-mentioned formula. Now these 3 albums, made after their departure/dismissal, have exposed Bone and Cof's greatest weakness: the inability to make compelling beats. - FYI: Pigeon John makes "Open Bar" the strongest track.

Not Great, but, Not Bad.......2007-07-04
I love his voice, I love the beats, I don't understand the vocals on this, his long awaited solo album. It was mediocre. I heard him on Wu-Tang ish, and cat had it on lock. I just feel that he can not really hold it down on his own. Worth it for beats alone, but see if you can sub someone else's verses in his place, if you can. I did, and it sounds dope. DEFINITELY do not listen to his compilation Stranglas. STRAIGHT UP GARBAGE.
A better artist is King Just, and my personal favorite is La the Darkman.
THE BEATS ARE THE LET DOWN.......2006-08-07
ive only sampled a few tracks but the beats are weak, if you think u-god is wack and doesnt rhyme you must be insane or just plane dumb, just listen he ryhems alot.
Pleasantly Surprised.......2006-06-04
Like everyone else, I thought this was going to be wack. Boy was I surprised! The beats on this album are what saves it. U-God isn't the best rapper, but he is able to work with the great beats to make an extremely decent album. I've listened to all of the Wu albums and this is in my Wu-Tang top ten. Give it a chance.

LUV GACKT.......2007-05-11
I LUVE GACKT AND THIS IS JUST GOOD. IT HAS BOTH SONGS HE DID FOR THE GAME AND THE INSTRUMENTALS SO ITS REALLY GOOD.
I'm not a kid, I just don't have my own Amazon account........2007-03-02
$[...] for four songs? Sounds kind of over-priced, right? Wrong.
Although there are four songs on here, two are just the instrumental versions, which I never listen to since I prefer them to have vocals. So for me it's more $[...] for two songs, and I'll never regret it. Both these songs are just.. amazing. This is an amazing single, usually, I think Gackt's music is just alright, with a few better than his average songs. But Redemption and Longing are just two fantastic songs. But saddly, they are just two songs, so not much to discuss here on them.
If you like Gackt, I'd say buy this and you shouldn't regret it.
Gorgeous Songs from the best Artist out There.......2006-12-23
Gackt brings out another prefect set of songs. This time he's singing for Square's Final Fantasy Series; Dirge of Cerberus for Playstation 2.
I prefer Longing over Redemption but I love both songs and even if you don't even plan on picking up Dirge of Cerberus, pick up this CD because Gackt is the best Japanese singer out there!
And unlike Kingdom Hearts, where Square had Utada Hikaru sing both English and Japanese versions, Gackt only sings Japanese. There are no English versions.
Gackt's new song for DOC is heaven for fans of J-rock.......2006-06-20
I ahve listened to Gackt ever since 2004, and I heard that he was going to record 2 songs for the upcoming DIRGER OF CERBERUS: FINAL FANTASY VIII game. They are "Redemption" and "Longing". "Redemption" is quite a punk rock classic, and will never die. The second is more softer., But overall, good songs, and I can't wait to hear it in DOC FF7.
Something a little different..........2006-05-01
I've been listening to Gackt for quite a while; and although many people have started to complain about his new sound I find it refreshing that he tries new things every now and then. Diabolos was definately a breathe of fresh air after his previous albums 'The Seventh Night' and 'Love Letter' delivered slow ballads. Redemption continues with the Diabolos sound of heavy guitar and a hard rock sound. LONGING parrallels Redemption with it's heavy sound, but it's composition is indeed unique with a short orchestrated piece in the middle of the song before returning to the harsh guitars. I think that it's quite fitting since this was afterall a theme to the Final Fantasy Game. Gackt's voice is still deep and gorgeous; although a bit rough it compliments the sound of these singles. I believe if you liked Diabolos then this single will not dissappoint.
