      As a fan of James Durst over many years and many records, I think that "Element of Surprise" is his best work yet. The songs are clever, varied, and well-performed. There is a lot of variety, from message songs ("I Am a Seed of Peace") to whimsical wordplay (the title song, with its graphic connection to the excellent cover art). In addition to solid vocal and guitar work, James' tasteful use of backing musicians is effective throughout.

      It is also interesting to note the copyright dates on the songs. They are written over a thirty year period, but all presented in a fresh contemporary style. Lyrics and recording information are included, and the CD package is environmentally conscious. Thanks, James, and looking forward to the next one.

            James has been on the world folk scene for a lot of years, quietly doing his thing without the intervention of mega music industry. He accompanies thoughtful songs of positive subject matter with solid well played guitar. Strong melodies are sung with a rich voice, and a warped sense of humor creeps in at the right moments. James makes good poetry, presented in a grown up fashion, for the intelligent audience. Gently finger picking some interesting chords, he creates an intimate atmosphere that gives the listener the invitation to get to know this performer as a human being. There's less evidence in this album than in his others of his world traveling and diverse languages sung. Frequently associated with peace and ecological initiatives, he's an interesting guy to get to know.

            I totally agree that this is a very nice jazz music from Brave New World although I think quite different from their other albums which are of another genre. This is highly recommended!

            This is an amazing smooth jazz album. The previous reviewer is obviously not real bright because it isn't even supposed to be "synth pop". This is a jazz album, and a VERY good one at that. Highly recommended!

            Album Description

            The hourlong 23-song CD is in response to parents' requests for a travel companion to his two award-winning children's singalong videos, `A Great Day For Singing!' and `Another Great Day For Singing!' At once entertaining and educational, James employs songs rich in melody and ripe for harmonies to engage children and their families in singing together. Additionally, he uses familiar songs to introduce them to irregular rhythms (`Itsy-Bitsy 7-Legged Spider' and `Kumbaya In 5'), the sections of the orchestra (`Old King Cole'), and Spanish (`Somos El Barco/We Are The Boat'). Ably assisted by upright bassist Ritt Henn, Jamaican percussionist Maroghini and numerous other distinctive musicians, Durst's arrangements are fresh and fun, breathing new life into songs that are like old friends.             I have been looking for a cd with all the old traditional classics- This Old Man, Home on the Range, O Susanna etc for my 6 year old and haven't found anything comparable to this. Add a few of his clever originals such as All My Socks and you have a cd your kids will play all day long. I was lucky to meet James at a lunch and purchased this along with his original folk material, which is also excellent. This one is for the kids!
