Customer Reviews:
Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05
I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!
A Good One!.......2006-11-10
This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14
I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.
Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.
The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)
The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.
"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.
"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.
"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.
When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.
To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it
The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05
I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!
Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19
You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.
What Great Music.......2003-05-11
I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.
super.......2003-04-17
What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

I Can't Stop Listening!.......2007-05-24
All Time Low are a great band composed of 4 guys who just graduated high school in 2006. I have a feeling something huge is going to happen with them. This is one of those CDs that you put in your stereo and you can listen to the whole thing from start to finish without skipping any tracks. Catchy lyrics and melodies too. I highly recommend you check this band out if you like Cute is What we Aim For, Fall Out Boy, The Academy Is, Hit the Lights, All American Rejects, etc. This deserves more than 5 stars!
all time low wins!.......2007-05-08
great vocals. this is an EP just so you know. they have catchy songs that make you want to dance forever. these are some talented boys that will soon obtain some serious attention, so you may want to get to know them before the rest of the world does. they're on warped tour 2007.

All time low are nothing you haven't heard before, but becuase they never claimed to be original or unique, I'll cut em' a break.
Basically, if you like Hit The Lights or (old) Fall Out Boy, you'll probably like All Time Low and the "put up or shut up EP".
All Time Low are out to pick up where fall out boy sadly dropped off with "from under the cork tree". Recommended.

Very Enjoyable for all music fans.......2006-03-02
This is very good collection of music that brings to life a wide variety of music that is both old and contemporary. The selections vary from composers, historical and famous such as Pavarotti and Puccini to today's James Horner (Titanic, A Beauituful Mind) and John Williams (Star Wars, Sabrina, Jaws, Saving Private Ryan).
If you enjoy the sounds of Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Church, Enya, Kate Bush, Andrea Bocelli, and various theatre music (Andrew Lloyd Webber (Evita, Cats), then you will find this collection worthy of your appreciation.
I have often wondered why classical music radio channels do not play modern composers (i.e., Horner, Willams), and am glad that this album gives them credit that they deserve. There is so many good compositions being created every day that only appear to have a voice on the big screen, which is unfortunate.
Track 11, composed by The Doors, and is a nice version, indeed. I also enjoy the Bond players giving a new twist to some old favourites.
Ciao,
Neil
Absolutely Amazing! Two CDs packed with the world's most beautiful classical music..........2005-11-08
First, let me begin by saying that I am by no means an expert in classical music, but have grown to appreciate it immensely in the past year. I can say wholeheartedly that this is the most beautiful compilation of music I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. It's simple irresistible. There are few words to describe how emotional it is to hear Pavarotti sing "II Canto", or Placido Domingo belt out "Questa o quella". You just get numb with joy!! I have NO idea what they are saying but a translation not necessary. The entire collection (TWo jammed-packed CDs) is phenomenal (excluding the selections from "Bond" which I found to be particularly annoying and not at all "classical" in the true sense of the word). There is something here for everyone, regardless of your personal musical tastes or tolerances.
A guaranteed hit -- Don't miss this one.
CD One
Andrea Bocelli "En Aranjuez con tu amor"
Bryn Terfel - "Granada"
Bond - "Viva" ( not my favorite, sounds almost disco-ish)
Hayley Westenra - "Pokarekare Ana"
Luciano Pavarotti - "Una Mattina"
Katherine jenkins - "Time To Say Goodbye" (a heart stopper - so beautiful!)
Duel - "Canon" (lovely!)
Janine Jansen - "Allegro from 'Spring'"
Andreas Scholl - "Ombra mai fu"
Nigel Kennedy - "The Unknown Soldier"
Kiri Te Kanawa - "Nuns' Chorus"
Nelson Freire - "Chopin Etude No. 1 op. 25
Julian Lloyd Webber - "Flight of the Bumble-bee"
James Horner - "For the Love of a Princess
Hans Zimmer & Lisa Gerrard "Now We Are Free"
Renee Fleming - "Mesicku na nebi hlubokem"
Russell Watson - "Amore e Musica"
CD TWO
Luciano Pavarotti - "II Canto" (I MUST see him sing this in person!!)
Placido Domingo - "Questa o quello" (I never tire of hearing this)
Andrea Bocelli & Bryn Terfel - "the Pearl Fisher's Duet"
Jose Carreras - "Funiculi, funicula
Dominc Miller & Kaori Muraji - "Fragile"
Tavener - "Song for Athene"
Josep Calleja - "La donna e mobile"
Jean-Yves Thibaudet - "Gymopedie No. 1"
Juan Diego Florez - "Una furtiva lagrima"

There's no arguing with the power of Sissel's voice. The Norwegian soprano brought James Horner's Titanic to life and blew people away at the Lillehammer Olympics' opening ceremony. Positioned as a classical crossover performer, Sissel's talent and versatility gets her into trouble. The 12-song My Heart bounces back and forth from Andrew Lloyd Webber to Franz Schubert, from Astor Piazolla to Ennio Morricone. These different composers are reconciled into one album by her talent. She's less successful with a so-so version "Ave Maria," but does better with Puccini's tear-jerker aria "O Mio Babbino Caro." Things go aesthetically awry when the singer (who has recorded folk music in the past) dives into folk-pop with "Angel Eyes" and then spin completely out of control on Richard Marx's "Someone Like You," which is a jarring stab at light R&B. Seemingly formulated by marketing team, My Heart may succeed at getting radio airplay in different formats, but it's an album that loses its way at times. --Tad Hendrickson

MY HEART SISSEL.......2007-03-19
Sissel shows her versatilty and is an excellent CD with an excellent voice.Best I've heard in years
SHE'LL TAKE YOUR HEART.......2007-02-24
Once again, Sissel's crystal-clear, bell-like voice is complemented with beautiful songs & lush orchestrations. Among standouts: "Mon coeur s'ouvre a la voix," "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "Deborah's Theme." Sissel also does a beautiful job with "Pie Jesu," although I would have liked to have heard it as a duet. Even though there is not quite as diverse a repertoire as "Into Paradise" - which better showcases her voice (hence, the 4-star rating) - the album as a whole is wonderful and highly recommended.
Sub par for 'Goddess of Song'.......2007-02-07
The first Sissel CD I bought was "Into Paradise" where her astounding, sonorous tones are allowed full breadth of expression. This album, however, I was slightly disappionted in. The song selection does not appeal to me as well or emphasize her voice as fully. Still, as a record it is very lovely. It depends on what you expect...
Norwegian soprano.......2007-01-17
I love Sissel's voice. The range, depth and quality of her voice enhanses every song she sings. She expresses so much of what Norwegian culture and tradition mean.
A beautiful voice.......2007-01-04
I recently discovered Sissel via her CD, Into Paradise. I particularly like the compositions which allow Sissel to demonstrate her range. The songs Pie Jesu and Ave Maria being two good examples. There are some performances on this CD which edge easily into what might be called contemporary or popular music. This woman simply has a beautiful voice and is a pleasure to listen to.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

gohst of CREED .......2006-09-14
As a first time album from this band, I have to say, it is not all that bad. But, I would like to point a few things out about this album. If you listen to there music, they sound like 12 stones with Myles kennedy from Alter bridge singing on it. Now, everytime I buy a cd, I read the thank you's and all that to see what was in it. I noticed that Scott Phillips from Creed and Mark Tremonti was in this album. Mark actually produced the album. Scott played the drums. No wander I like this album. I love CREED and I wish that they would have done a live album before they broke up.
sweet.......2006-07-11
Good new sound, something different to listen to, love the lead singer's voice. definetively worth my time and money
reply to dunked.......2006-06-24
yes his voice is not the usuall you would hear for this type of music but i love his voice and the tone pitches fit the music flawlessly. If your looking for a rock album that is not the usuall mainstream BS then this is for you. If you liked Hollow you will like the rest of the album.

Ok first off i have listened to tool and if they were even remotely as good as 10 years maybe i would believe this.I love how everyone acts as if they are the only band in the world.Seems like everyone and there mother loves tool.Anyway the only thing tool like about ten years is the vocalist his voice sounds a bit like it but not very much it actualy sounds better. For those people who usualy go by the reviews on here and almost have there mind made up that this cd is a waste all i will say is give them a chance, and for the people complaining that they ripped tool or apc off i don't believe it why you ask? because this cd is above that quality. Unlike someone else who's music is highly overated.
Honestly if they did rip them off it would be a shame cause then it would just mean that they can play tool and a perfect cirlce type music better then tool ,and apc.Like i said give them a chance if you don't like it i heard tool released a new cd a little while ago you can always buy that...heh
"Heavy is like today's classical music".......2006-03-08
Those words (or some words like those) are part of the reason I ventered out on a limb and grabbed this cd. Mr. Carpenter had been on the radio because their band was coming to do a show or something and I became intriqued by what he had to say, escepecially by the line mentioned in the title. I mean, it really got me thinking (sometimes a good thing, sometimes a dangerous venture, but I thought nonetheless). Anyway, between those words continuosly tickling my brain (I sure hope I heard them right, now, because otherwise all this thinking will really be a wasted endeavor), the single Hollow, and the holy-mackeral gee-wiz lickity-split ain't-that-the-..er..-"stuff" cover art, I purchased this disc, something many of you may be seriously contemplating. And, as my star rating may have suggested to you, I'm not too dissapointed.
Now, I know what you're all thinking - well, actually I don't, but let's pretend, shall we? - "the guy (singer) is a pop-star wannabe and the band is in an arena too big for their shorts and all the songs are gonna sound the same with no roaring gusto that my usual bands have perfected". Well, if you did or do indeed have these thoughts, I cannot really discredit you, for I, being the Dick I am, too am a harsh critic of...uh, everything. And the first two listens to this disc, and I thought: yep, just what I feared, a Creed idol band with a good radio sound but nothing else. And if you knew me and my tastes in music, I am no Creed fan, no radio-rock-Nickleback fan, but instead prefer Limp Bizkit for my audio gravy of choice. (I mean, come on, the Bizkit. THE BIZKIT, man.) But, bizkits and gravy aside, I think we all know: LB have laid low recently, and their return to the top is still gonna have to wait for tomorrow. So, for today's hungry appetite, we need to lower our standards a bit, and be willing to not necessarily embrace another leader in music but instead allow ourselves to be content with the key roster in today's "waiting" musical generation (as we're all waiting for the next big thing).
But anyhoo, I'm getting beside the point and rambling. This disc does resemble Creed, but as you all know, they got at least a little something to them, as evident by Hollow. And the singer is amazing, I think you can agree to that. The band is slightly single-tracked, and the first few listens may get you shaking your head - but, before you give up, read my title again. And think about how monotonous a Betoven (however the haystacks you spell it) or Tchicoski (dido) cd would sound. Slightly similar, slightly bland, right? But I grew up playing piano (laugh if you must, bastards) and those classical guys were good...you just had to open your mind up to the collective music creativity in their songs...they weren't about one-hit wonders. And what I'm trying to say is, for me, listening to this band was kind of the same thing. They ain't gonna be radio sell-outs (I hope) not because they're too heavy or vulgar...it's because their music is, well...tightly experimental within its soundscape boundaries. It's just like the Deftones or something - there is something about them that makes you have to slow down to like them, I guess. You have to give up the pop image you may want to put on them and just notice the feelings inside as you listen. Unlike some of the other heavy music out there today, you don't really get addicted to this disc; but the key thing is, you don't come away from a listening session angry or wired, either. More...content and happy, I'd say. And I pay most of this to Mr. Carpenter's incredible vocal abilities.
Now, maybe all this is just an anxious attempt to find something good in a new unique artist while I wait for my favorite music styles and heavy hitters to redeem themselves. Perhaps I give the band too much credit for the simple fact that I don't own any rock like this, and it just seems a mellow orange to my usual Mountain Dew choice of music beverage. Or maybe I'm just so tired of the entertainment industry now that I'm trying to force myself to "like" something. Who knows. All I know is, Flicker kicks ass compared to Creed's My Own Pissin or whatever and right now I'm listening to it and bobbin my head to the music flow. Now, Submersed will never be the Sevendust, the Kid Rock, or the Limp Bizkit in any sense, and we can't compare them to that. All we can do, my now-bleary-eyed and bored readers is take them into consideration. I did, and for now, the harsh critic Dick Sunrise isn't bashing them.
There's always tomorrow, though. We'll see how these guys handle themselves. If I get a sense of them becoming cocky bastards like other Wind-Up artists, you can bet I'll be back, ready to slam them to the ground. But until then...
Peace out, and I hope this gives you food for thought (Bizkits and gravy, mmm...)

Awesome.......2007-05-17
The best African American rock band of all time. No further comment needed. Every rock fan must have all albums from Living Colour.
truly exceptional band and CD.......2007-05-05
I consider this CD to be Living Colour's masterpiece and one of my all time favorites, one of my "desert island top 10 must haves."
In my opinion, it is the total package...it has jaw-dropping musicianship and musical execution, exquisite song crafting, near perfect sound production and mixing, tasty song order placement and mood shifting, legendary musical guests,(I'll go on...), strong and (STILL) relevant lyrics, all rapped up in one CD when the band was at the top of their game.
It seems to me that the band put forth a ton of soul, time, and brain power in producing this record, and feels like they wanted to use their new found fame to get the truth out to the mainstream (white) kids who came to the shows. (me included)
I'm 41 now and CANNOT help cranking this up all the way through when listening while driving, one of the few recordings that can still get me geeked after MULTIPLE listens over 17 years now.
A gift to the world of MUSIC (screw genre) by one gifted and special band.
Living tosh.......2007-03-19
Absolute Tosh of the highest order, wow man this sucks bigtime, why did they not get lessons and a proper drummer?????????. This so called Blackrock is about as rock as my Toothpaste. Ok for a coaster i suppose.
Better than their first release, which was perfect.......2007-02-10
You can't do better than perfection. Or so I thought.
As I continue to grow my CD collection (replacing the hundreds of cassettes that I own from my teenage years) I am reminded of the many albums that I absolutely loved. This is one of them.
Living Colour released their 2nd album, Time's Up, to less critical acclaim and less sales than that which greeted their first album, Vivid. Vivid was sheer perfection, no doubt about it, but the fact that Time's Up did not receive the same attention is baffling to me.
Time's Up presents a more mature sound; lyrically deeper, musically inventive. The sound is layered with the hard hitting drums, heavy guitar riffs and jazz-infused bass lines that are expected from Living Colour, but the album is mixed with subtle synthesized, ambient backgrounds that give the music a whole new feel. And of course, there is Corey Glover's vocals that transcend the rock genre and blur the lines between R&B and rock & roll; soul, rage, pain, personified in song.
The title track, Pride, Love Rears It's Ugly Head, Information Overload, Solace Of You and This Is Life are all musical perfection; played with precision and attention to finite musical detail. All other songs are entertaining at the least and help to round out this work of art.
Perfection can be bettered; Living Colour has proven it with their 1st 2 albums.
Expansion kit for version one.......2007-01-10
Living Colours second album takes the ideas of hteir first album and explodes them. The album opens with the tune Times Up, a slab of funk on fast forward that rips along like funk seldom does. But what this album really scored points at the time for were the tunes Elvis is Dead and Type. The former isn't as sacriligeous a swipe as you might think and instead is an inciteful attack on the respeated Elvis revival crap we had to sit throug hduring the 80's. And darn funny too. As for Type - it was the sort of activist/consciousness raising tool that litter LC's catalogue.
Also track 4 should be mentioned - Love Rears it's Ugly Head, which was a huge hit across several territories. Show me a guy who doesn't relate to this song and I'll show you a guy that hasn't hit puberty! A slice of humour, genuine feeling and male resignation all rolled into one. This track, along with the aforementioned title track, Elvis is Dead and Type are what makes this album tick.
Times Up does not have the bounce the debut posessed. Itn's not nearly as easy a listen yet gets brownie points ofr the bravery shown by the band for not putting forth Livid pt.2. It's still unmistakeably LC however. With Glover singinger and Vernon firing away on six string duties it's hardly going to sound like anybody else though is it....
The version I pikced up had a few bonus live tracks and an AKA Soul Power Mix of Love Rears it's Ugly Head. None of which achieve anything other than to make the album too long. and as for the couple of joke tunes like History Lesson (0.54) and Ology 1 (1.07), well they could of been left off along with Tag Team Partners (0.47). Quite what the band were thinking, scarring an album with a number of highlights with this bunch of lowlights is beyond me.
Overall a good album, not as concise as would of been best and a few of the numbers are pretty anonymous. But still, if funk metal is your thing and you liked the debut you could do a lot worse. A low four stars for this one...

The first two-thirds of this disc is a fascinating cram course in concert music around the time of World War I. The programmer has put together some fascinating juxtapositions--for example, Strauss's Rosenkavalier leads almost seamlessly into Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, and Schoenberg sounds out of context with everybody (including Berg). The selections are all short, and performance quality runs from great to mediocre, but this is still a thought-provoking educational experience, even though Bartók and Ives are conspicuously missing. The popular selections are less interesting, often campy, and although vintage recordings are used, they aren't always the right vintage. And someone missed a point by separating Copland's jazzy "Music for the Theatre" from Louis Armstrong, who could have followed immediately. --Leslie Gerber

Music and the Great War.......2007-05-14
This is a fascinating compendium of popular and classical music from the World War One period. It evokes all the turmoil, anguish, and also humor, of the age, and is a vital CD to own if you have an interest in the Great War and the music it inspired or was inspired by.
How a Century Has Change Our Perception of War.......2005-10-29
War. Tough subject these days - tough subject since the beginning of time. Yet Americans tend to mend wounds and gradually allow the atrocities of yesteryear to fade into coated cases that signal more memories of 'how things used to be' rather than learning from the tragedies with which war has scarred the planet. National Public Radio issued this excellent memoir at the turn of the millennium and one wonders if it now has the same response that greeted it in 1999.
Linda Kobler reconstituted this mix of classical and popular music with a keen sense of history. The CD is twice divided (in both the classical and the popular music) into 'Before the War' 1901 - 1917, 'During the War' 1917 - 1922, and 'After the War' 1922 - 1928. In the first era are the works of Elgar ('Pomp and Circumstance'), Strauss (a waltz from 'Der Rosenkavalier'), Mahler (excerpt from 'Das Lied von der Erde'), and Debussy ('La Mer') joining the songs 'Shine On Harvest Moon' and 'Alexander's Ragtime Band'. The War period is represented by Prokofiev's 'Symphony No. 1', Stravinsky's 'L'histoire du soldat', and Ravel's 'Le tombeau de Couperin' in tandem with 'Over There'. After the war include Stravinsky ('Pulcinella Suite'), Schoenberg (Waltz from 'Five Piano Pieces'), Berg (excerpt from 'Wozzeck') and Copland ('Music from the Theatre') with popular songs 'How you gonna keep 'em down on the farm', 'The Man I Love', and 'West End Blues'.
The excerpts selected for this survey are exceptionally good: orchestras include NY Phil, LA Phil, Philadelphia Orchestra, London Symphony, and the Columbia Symphony under such batons a Ormandy, Bernstein, Salonen, Tilson Thomas, Schippers and Stravinsky; soloists include Glen Gould, Robert Casadesus, Lili Chookaskian, Louis Armstrong, et al. The sonics are very fine and the performances are each from significant full recordings remaining in the catalogue.
The booklet accompanying this concert of memories is written by Linda Kobler who uses each selection as a pivotal point in the atmosphere of the globe that accompanied the Great War: it is very well written and informative. This is one of those recorded collections that goes far beyond an accumulation of bits and pieces and instead gives food for thought about how our political and social actions intertwine with the arts in a prophetic way. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 05
Excellent Recording!.......1999-03-13
(It was called The "Great" War, because nobody knew about WWII at the time and it was the biggest war anyone had ever seen.)
I think this CD may be a bit choppy to "easy" listeners, but for anyone who has a sincere interest in delving into the musical senses of earlier generations it's VERY good! I recommend the entire NPR Milestones of the Millennium series to such aficionados.
Good music, bad title.......1999-02-11
Since when is war great? Life in the trenches waiting for the germans to attack you worrying about whether mustard gas is gonna loft your way isn't exactly like sipping chablis.
