Album Description
Few bands are more closely associated with Montreux than Deep Purple and there was simply no other contender when it came to choosing the act to headline the closing night of the 40th Montreux Festival in 2006. The band duly delivered one of their finest live performances, sprinkling songs from their latest album "Rapture Of The Deep" through a set chock full of their classic tracks including, of course, a show-stopping performance of "Smoke On The Water".
This CD is being released simultaneously with the 2-DVD release of the same title.
Customer Reviews:
It's a "Don or Jon" thing..........2007-07-11
The previous "Live At Montreux 1996" CD and DVD are essential items for Deep Purple fans, and I also recommend the new "They All Came Down..." CD and DVD. The interviews are really enlightening, and you walk away with the belief that Deep Purple is, above all other things, a true hard-working rock & roll band. The legacy means something to each of them and they refer to the fans as "members of the band." It's been 11 years since Steve Morse was "the new guy." Back in those days I thought "You can't possibly have Deep Purple without Ritchie Blackmore," and 11 years later, we do have them, and they still deliver the goods. I respect the career accomplishments of Don Airey, but when I compare the 1996 Montreux set to the new one, I miss Jon Lord. True, it was his decision to leave the band after becoming "road weary," and there are no ill words spoken about him in the interviews (unlike the band's take on Blackmore). Lord was a power player...and sometimes a showboat, just like Blackmore. But his sound was big and full and tough and it was a defining element of the band. When I hear Don Airey's somewhat lighter, more subtle touch, it comes as a bit of a disappointment. But the band is happy, they all get along, they're still making music, and they've delivered two solid studio albums since Don joined the band ("Bananas" and "Rapture Of The Deep"). The new set revisits "Pictures Of Home," "When A Blind Man Cries," and "Smoke On The Water," also performed on the 1996 album. There are three tracks from "Rapture."
If you watch the 1996 video, there's a "shot out of a cannon" feel to the band that might have been the simply joy of emancipating themselves from the constant tension with Blackmore in the wake of his walk-off during the "Battle Rages On" tour. Ian Gillan actually expresses gratitude in the interviews to Blackmore for heading south, because he believed that the band most certainly would have broken up at the end of the "Battle" tour if he hadn't.
Jon Lord left on amicable terms, so they have less to prove...simply the fact that they are a true Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame band, and they are carrying on, and they still have what it takes. The 1996 Montreux set was a jaw-dropper. The 2006 set is solid. That was then, this is now. No complaints.

worth money.......2007-05-24
this cd set is definately worth the money spent. i haven't heard some of the music before but was willing to give it a try.
Great Patriotic Music.......2007-02-21
Beautiful music perfect for feeling patriotic. Received CD promptly and in great condition.
A good choice of tunes with good quality.......2005-06-30
If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.
Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11
I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.
Best Patriotic Music I've Found.......2001-09-20
Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

Customer Reviews:
The Price Club.......2005-04-28
"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.
"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.
A living legend.......2005-03-10
Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "
not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23
Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.
Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31
IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**
Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12
This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

A Fine Soundtrack of a Fine Movie.......2007-07-15
I basically love the movie, because it's poetic along with Montana wilderness and I am a fly-fisherman. I have just bought this CD as my background music while I am tying flies. And it works very very well. Each track reminds me of each moment of the movie, especially, tracks from Track 25 "Yes, Quite a Day" to Track 31 "Hauted by Waters" just make me poignant. An exclusive interview with the composer is also very unique and worth to hear about the background of the movie. "The Moment That Could Not Last" last only 1:24, how about in our real life? Is it gonna be like Paul's? I am hautend by this soundtrack.
Review(How original huh?).......2007-01-25
Personally, this is one of the absolute BEST soundtracks I have ever listened to. The music is calming, soothing, and truly wonderful. The music is so well put together and nicely coordinated and I feel like I am watching the movie again...it also makes great to read the Laura Ingalls Wilder books too. Try it...you might be suprised how well it fits. :)
Music that transcends simple meaning..........2006-07-16
Mark Isham's score for the motion picture A River Runs Through It is one of the most memorable and emotionally captivating film scores of all time. The arrangements of strings, piano, woodwinds create a meditative and reflective range of music throughout the film capturing all the emotions of this powerful drama about an American family in rural Montana. It is at once deeply haunting, moving, nostalgic and sentimental and captures the innocence and beauty of nature and childhood, as well as darker themes of rebellion and tragedy. There is a profound sense of emotion that is embedded within the music that sweeps over me every time I hear it. A combination of happiness, sadness, excitement, and reflection. There is something simply sweeping and majestic within his music. I couldn't think of anything else that would better compliment the film. Highly recommended.

A Beautiful Muiscal Rendition of the Psalms.......2004-04-19
To some extent, the title of this collection PSALMS FOR THE SOUL is a bit oxymoronic. The psalms that are set to music in this collection are from the Bible, and therefore all psalms from scripture would be psalms for the soul, so to speak. I would imagine that the person who came up with the title was trying to market the recording to a broader public than just those who would purchase a religious CD and thought it would be catchy. But I digress and should not poke fun of the people of Naxos who do a tremendous service to classical music lovers by providing a wide variety of music at affordable prices.
This collection contains musical settings of the psalms. Some of the settings are anthems from the Anglican tradition. Other settings are more liturgical stemming from the Benedictine monastic tradition. Some of the settings are contemporary, others traditional. The Choir of St. John's under the direction of Noel Edison and organist Michael Bloss, performs the pieces with both beauty and reverence.
This collection is relaxing. It makes wonderful background music while concentrating and could also be used as in prayerful reflective settings as well.

Funk diddy funk dunk dunk.......2005-01-19
Fellow music enthusiast: Do yourself a favor and get this album. It is funk by probably one of the better bands out there. The only drawback is that the whole CD is only about 20 minutes long but it is 20 excellent minutes full of beats and horns and vocals that just make your head bob. It is insatiable and hopefully this album will please you as much as it will for you.

Deep Down & Dirty is the fourth album from the Stereo MC's, though it could easily be their 10th, given the number of tracks that have hit the cutting-room floor in the intervening years. And yet just one listen to it makes it seem as if the U.K.'s premier crossover hip-hop act have never been away. The album's title track and lead single find rapper Rob Birch back in inspired form, freestyling those positive vibes over filthy, irresistible funk. "We Belong in This World Together" is a huge sing-along anthem; "Breeze" is dubbed-up urban soul with swirling atmospherics and Vocoder mumblings; "Traffic" is a colossal, up-front groove that culminates with Birch declaring, "It ain't easy, it ain't easy." Clearly not, but you'd never know from listening to this record. --Mike Pattenden

YES YES YES.......2002-07-14
As music transcends words, as the rhythm defies definition, so will any review fail analyze this album. Not that there is some thing mysterious about it, nor dose it speak in tongues. I feel it is right to say that in this album the whole is much larger then the sum of the words written about it. It is complete in the sense that every track is good as a stand alone jewel, it is complete in the sense that combined together they are even better. This album IS about music, and there is little to add in term of labels, for any cataloging will fail dead in its tracks.
This album is not for the faint hart, for the seekers of serenity, it is not for those who listen to dwell in soft ambient light. It is hard and fast. It is the rock and the hard place.
It gave me many hours of pleasure. A pleasure that came from deep down inside.
Buy this CD, and Stereo MC's other two, too..........2002-06-20
I bought Deep, Down & Dirty, loved it and played it non-stop
until I needed more. Then I bought Connected; same story. Then
I bought Supernatural American Mix.
Best rap I've ever heard. And deliciously, lusciously funky.
If only I could convince the ditzy DJ's I know to play this
stuff...
Highly recommended songs:
"The Right Effect" (Deep, Down & Dirty)
"Don't Let Up" (Connected)
"Declaration" (Supernatural)

Stereo Mc's
Deep Down and Dirty
Island/Universal
Over the years, Stereo MC's Connected would never left my cd player for months on end. One of the most entertaining live acts to come out of the early 90's, they opened and blew fellow alty-brats Jesus Jones out of the water when they appeared in Montreal to support the seminal release back in 1992. UK's premier crossover hip hop act release Deep Down and Dirty some nine years later only to show their absence has made them deeper, downer and dirtier and tighter with the funk. Rob Birch's unique commanding, half-rap, half-sung mantra is back along with an irresistible, filthy fusion of rap, funk, with stabs of dance rock blockin' beats. Lead off single/title track "Deep Down and Dirty" remind us of what made Connected such a refreshing, melting pot of booty shaking rhythm and rhyme. "We Belong In This World Together" a sing along anthem, reminds us about the positive/intelligent lyrical quotient the band is known for. "Breeze" and "Traffic" are the standout dubbed up urban tracks that highlight stellar levels of production along with the culmination of all the variables into a near flawless mix.
Early 90s Fans Rejoice!.......2002-01-21
Its as if Stereo Mcs didnt take a break. As accessible as Connected, if not more, Deep plummets into crunchy, funky beats without being too much or not enough. "We Belong In This World Together" is a must hear for any fan who still believed a comeback would happen. The title track beeps and blips itself into your heart, while "Sophisticated" just simply makes you smile. While these songs wont win over everybody and break much ground in the world of laptops, drum machines, 20 or so soul singers, and vocoders, it will definitely win over those kids who dug "Connected" all 1,000 times they played it on MTV, K-Mart, and your favorite tv commercial. Thats deep, man.
Funk, funk and mo' funk.......2001-11-17
Simply put, it's a Brit Hip-hop masterpiece--excellent
grrrrroves and heavy bass production.

Now one of the few survivors of the Chicago blues harmonica scene that once included Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson, Bell has the control, full tone, and attack of his mentors. A former sideman for Muddy Waters, he was one of the last to learn his craft at the hands of the masters. This, his first Alligator album from 1995, updates several blues harmonica classics (Little Walter's "I Got to Go," Sonny Boy Willliamson's "After You," and a superb reading of Walter Horton's "Easy"), without ever losing sight of Alligator's company credo of "House Rockin' Music." In truth, Bell is not a great vocalist, and if the Walters and the Sonny Boys were still around, he wouldn't get a look-in. As it is, he's one of the few surviving bluesmen to come up from Mississippi, having seen and heard much of what the old guys saw. --Colin Escott
Customer Reviews:
Great Chicago Blues.......2003-10-02
This is Carey's best album. It's like an Allstar Jam with son Lurrie and Carl Weathersby on guitar along with Lucky Peterson on piano.Carey's harmonica never sounded better.
Carey Bell A True Chicago Blues Harmonica Master.......2002-01-24
Chicago is one tough town to become a star harmonica player in. During it's long and colorful history as the Blues harmonica capitol of the world, Chicago has given us the likes of Sonny Boy Williamsons I and II, Little Walter, Big Walter, James Cotton, Paul Butterfield, Charlie Musselwhite and dozens more, also too many to count.
It is a pleasure to listen to Carey Bell. A Chicago Blues veteran since the mid-1950's, Bell has worked with Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Walter Horton, John Lee Hooker and a host of others. He has been making records since the late 1960's, but this recording from the Alligator label really shines through.
Bell shows himself to be a capable vocalist and frontman as well as a stellar Blues harmonica master. His back-up band includes Chicago musicians like Carl Weathersby, Lucky Peterson and his son Lurrie Bell. They are as tight a band as one could wish for and this album is a pleasure to listen to from beginning to end.
Overall I'd say that this is a definite must for any Chicago Blues harmonica collection.
Brilliant 'Mississippi saxophone'.......2002-01-24
Carey Bell gets 5 stars for his harmonica playing ('Mississippi saxophone'), however the album only gets 3 stars for overall effect. It is still quite a reasonable album but only hits the highlights when Carey plays his harp. There is occasionally some interesting keyboards from Lucky Peterson and guitar from Carl Weathersby and Lurrie Bell. However, the album is only memorable when Carey shows his stuff, none better than on 'Must I holler' and on the instrumental 'easy'.
Gave Me A Whole New Perspective On Bell.......2001-07-10
I have heard a great deal of praise for this album over the several years since I became a harpist and I had long been curious if it was worth the great reviews it got. Finally, I afforded the opportunity to hear it for myself when I recieved it as a gift. My initial reaction was WOW! I had heard Carey Bell before, but not like this. This album has a distinctly tough, gritty feeling, the like of which I haven't heard since I picked up Junior Wells' outstanding "Hoodoo Man Blues."
The harp is the real show stealer here. Carey Bell has always been a bit underrated, not getting quite the same recognition as James Cotton or Little Walter. On this album, Carey clearly demonstrates that he can match anyone playing today. His tone is unbelievably fat, and his phrasing is remarkably intricate. Coupled with his ability to blow chromatic harmonica like no other, Bell really is one of the greatest players out there.
Carey Bell is not the most talked about vocalist, and has actually been derided as being a sub par singer. I don't get it. He's not Muddy Waters, but in his own way, Carey is a good blues singer. His rough voice works well, particularly on such tracks as "When I get Drunk."
The backing band is definatly in the groove too, with Lucky Peterson giving great work on keys and Carey's son, Lurrie, puts on a show on guitar.
Overall, this is a stellar blues album. I had always liked Carey's work. After I heard this, he quickly became a personal favorite in the word of harmonica players. Once you hear this disc, you'll understand exactly what I mean.
WARNING: Blues Harp Attack!.......2000-07-23
OK, I admit it. I had never heard of Carey Bell. I went and saw him at Yoshi's because whatever they have is awesome. Always. And Carey Bell is no exception. I bought this CD on the spot and walked away wondering why in the heck he doesn't get more attention. This is blues the way it should be; high energy, raw, with the emotion of a smokey blues club. You like harp. You like blues. You will love this CD. I guarantee it.

Great Album, But About Those Alternate Takes..........2006-08-31
it would have been nice if the "Powers That Be", whoever they are, had also put the original album cuts of "In Marsovia", "Down In Dear Marsovia" and "Vilia" on this CD and not just the alternate takes of these 3 songs. The absence of the album cuts of these 3 removes 2 stars from an otherwise great CD.
MERRY WIDOW Broadway style.......2004-02-03
Decca's old 78 RPM album of THE MERRY WIDOW was recorded shortly after their phenomonally successful OKLAHOMA! set and sounds like a cast album of a Broadway production. Well, why now? After all THE MERRY WIDOW made her North American premiere at the New Amsterdam theatre for 416 performances begining October 21, 1907.
Though this recording is not directly taken from any specific production, two of the male leads Felix Knight and Wilbur Evans had appeared in a 1942 staging at Carnegie Hall which may explain why both men sound so comfortable in their roles. Kitty Carlisle makes a delightful widow, a role she too had played on stage many times. She sings with a straightforward, unforced voice and enunciates the lyrics clearly. The whole performance made for an enjoyable listen when the set was new and the only problem is the occasional bit of surface noise from Decca's well worn master discs.
The 1950 set of highlights from THE STUDENT PRINCE (6 selections plus and Overture and Finale) shows what happens when singers go overboard: Though the rest of the cast is fine, Lauritz Melchior oversings the role to the point where it sounds as if he is mimicing Ezio Pinza in SOUTH PACIFIC.
In short, get this disc for THE MERRY WIDOW but go elsewhere for STUDENT PRINCE.
A (new) old Merry Widow . . ........2003-02-16
This album was available on 12" DECCA Lps for years under two separate editions. However, this time the powers that be, used the alternate and expanded takes of at least two of the best cuts. These were too lenthy for the 78's but they pack a wollop and add to the reality of the show. Vilia is expanded and the rousing "In Marsovia". This is the first time these two have seen the light of day since they were recorded . . . so I bet Kitty was surprised when she heard them.
The supporting cast is supperb with Lisette Verea being a standout. The sound is excellent . . . in fact it is such a nice treat to the ears . . .real authentic sound just the way you hear it naturally without hearing the tongue clicks and sibilants that "modern" recordings give you. This is sound as you would naturally hear it. Today's sound is more about technology than music . . . like looking at a painting and seeing all the brush strokes instead of the picture. Great CD. The other side, Student Prince is good except for Lauritz Melchior who is God awful.
A Nostalgic Visit With the Merry Widow.......2003-02-06
My ancient 78 rpm album of acetate records of this version of The Merry Widow is worn with age and over-use. So am I.
However, this reissue "digitally remastered" on a CD is like a joyous finding of an old treasure. There are many English translations of the orginal German lyrics this fine operetta and, perhaps, each listener has his or her own favorite. This performance happens to be mine. I happen to like Kitty Carlisle in the title role because I've been listening to her sing it for 60 years! I'm delighted this came out digitally remastered as it is. I wish someone could figure out how I can be digitally remastered -- just to keep up with things the way they are.

Not the Best but Good Enough.......2002-11-21
THE STUDENT PRINCE is my favorite operetta by any of the Golden Age operetta composers, and I was extremely eager to hear this version first recorded in 1950 but only now being released on CD coupled with another classic THE MERRY WIDOW. Alas, the film soundtrack with the incomparable Mario Lanza and the Columbia studio cast version with Jan Peerce still outdistance this release by a considerable margin.
The primary problem is the Prince himself sung by Danish tenor Lauritz Melchior. Melchior has all the notes and is in good voice, but his age works against him. There is no zip, no brio to the singing (which sets Lanza apart), and he seems supremely uncomfortable singing these songs in English (where Peerce excels). Peerce also has the luxury of stereo recording and the fact that his recording features the entire score, all benefits that make that release (sadly not on CD yet) the one to own.
Jane Wilson makes a youthful and lovely sounding Kathie while Lee Sweetland adds power and authority to the baritone refrains. It's not the perfect PRINCE, but it's a nice souvenir of the show's highlights.
THE MERRY WIDOW turns out surprisingly to be the better of the two operettas offered on this CD. Kitty Carlisle seems perfect casting as the title lady in question and handles her vocals admirably. Even better is bass-baritone Wilbur Evans who punches out the familiar songs with considerable power. Felix Knight adds whimsy to a couple of numbers.
These recordings, available for the first time in decades, are not the definitive versions of these shows, but it's wonderful to have them available again to familiarize ourselves with melodies which have been around longer than most of us who are eagerly listening to them.

the last of the best.......2003-02-20
I picked this album up in early '98 towards the end of the third wave of ska run. This album along with Hard Band For Dead symbolize all that waa great about ska in the late 90's. Great tunes. I recommend that you pick up this CD and take a close listen to "Today's a good day". The best song on the album.
A Decent Ska Disc..........2002-02-11
The Toasters seem to stumble on this release. Although they churn out a few catchy beats, the result is an album full of too much filler. Quite a shame.

Hardly their best stuff, but there are a few good tunes........1999-06-14
I eagerly anticipate any release by the Toasters, and upon first listening, I thought, "Pretty good." However, the album soon dropped out of my regular rotation of recently purchased albums. While there are some good songs on this album, such as the title track, I'm Running Right Through the World, and Everything You Said Has Been a Lie, this album just doesn't catch me as their others did. One reason is that the Toasters have continually changed throughout the years, from their Two-Tone sounding Skaboom! (which I purchased in condensed format as the Naked City on Unicorn Records... Amazon plug; buy Skaboom!, it has more songs and is of better sound quality) to their Coolie Ranx influenced dancehall of Dub56. However, with DLTBGYD the Toasters seemed to hit a creative rut. Perhaps it's the fact that there was not much change in their lineup as opposed to the various earlier Toaster lineups. Regardless, I thought that their previous album, Hard Band fe Dead, was pretty good. With DLTBGYD the sound has not changed much and I personally found HBFD to be better song by song. DLTBGYD typifies the later parts of the third wave of ska, in which repetition has prevailed among many bands, making it more difficult to find new, interesting variations of ska. In the ska scene, it is heresy to say such things about a respected, established band like the Toasters, but it seems that this predominant symptom of an influx of a genre has occurred here. As such, this album has ultimately been a letdown. Before recommending this album I would recommend Skaboom! or New York Fever first.
