good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Meet me at the bottom........2006-10-12

This CD has one of the best versions of Sleepy John Estes classic "Leavin' Trunk". My goodness, the song is almost tailor made for Dan Auerbachs tormented, distorted vocals.
This is one of the most talented young bands around. They've succeeded with a sound that's all their own and with minimal equipment. I wish them every success.

Bruised Blues.......2006-05-07

Pragmatically getting the job done of equal parts rockin and bluesin, yet somehow managing to reinturpret some of the oldest sounds in the book and make it sound hip to indie ears is a hard feat indeed. Few bands play with such lack of pretense and irony that it is utterly refreshing in it's sincerety to here these guys do what they do. There is a definite repetition of sound that can bog the disc down, but that self-less raw-ness always seems to kill the monotony, especially on those few hard hitting songs with insanely delicious riffs in all their tonal simplicity.

Welcome Addition To Your Blues Collection.......2006-03-12

I found these guys listening to Pandora online one day. Had no clue who they were or what they were about. Who knew some awesome blues could come from two skinny fellas from Akron, Ohio recording in a basement!!!??? First song I heard was Brooklyn Bound - great super dirty gritty blues sound that I love. Came to Amazon to listen to more clips and bought on the spot! All three albums carry through this great sound...I honestly can't pick a favorite album. Here are my top three fav songs on their three albums released to date...

Butt shaking music. If you like bluesy rock you'll love this. Not as refined as there 3rd Cd, much more primitive. Drums and guitar. Play it loud.

Their best.......2006-01-26

This is a great album by a great band. The best thing to come out of Akron Ohio. This two piece band takes blues-rock to another level, with vocals that will surprise anyone listening that its a white guy. The soul of Dan A.'s voice is one that i havent heard yet. Surprisingly, like the Stripes in less ways than one would think, and in many ways better. A truely powerful debut by an amazing band.

Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Hustlin', Flowin', and Chedda Showin'................2007-07-15

Bone Thugs is one of my favorite groups! "The Intro" is sort of a Freddy Krueger type of opening, very suspenseful, very Eazy E-esque, but with a Bone Thugs flava! "Mr Ouija" can be about knowing if "we" will live or die and how the demise with happen, this song is very prophetic, in the fact that in spite of what they do, they speculate what the consequences will be. "Thuggish, Ruggish, Bone", is a campy tune. The melody is hot and the song is definitely a classic for BT&H, mainly this is about just chillin, makin' money, hustlin', and pimpin'. I would classify this a a street blues jam, very well done!
"No Surrender" has a 'Zapp & Roger' feel mixed with 3rd Bass, LOL! This reminds me alot of a survival type track. I mean running and surviving on the streets. Especially getting revenge on those who mess with your crew! "Down Foe My Thang" can be said to be a 'self' track! I mean, on the streets, you gotta do what you gotta do. If hustlin' and drugs are your thing, then you gotta do what it takes to get the job done. Look behind the words on this track, I feel that it is saying to accomplish your dreams, any way you can. "Creepin On Ah Come Up" is the smooth title track. It reminds me of 'Welcome To Eazy's Playhouse' by Eazy E. (RIP). This is sort of a real gangsta track, reminiscing about thuggin', robbin', and thievin'.
"For Tha Love Of $" is all about making' dat chedda! No matter how you have to do it. Money is something one has to have and the thugs gotta keep rollin', making their ends. Eazy E shines phat on this track. "Moe Cheese" is just a continuation of 'For Tha Love Of $'. Overall, I would say that this Cd is for the pimps and hustlas, just trying to make it in the world, by any means necessary....

Short But Strong Introduction For Bone Thugs.......2007-06-02

This EP was recorded during the Golden Age of West Coast Rap and was created under the guidance of Gangsta Rap pioneer Eazy-E. This rap group come from Cleveland, Cleveland had never really had a hip-hop scene and this release helped create a sound for the Midwest. DJ U-Neek's productions are in the G-Funk style that was popular at the time, they are smooth and easy to listen to. Rapping is handled by Krayzie Bone, Layzie Bone, Wish Bone, Bizzy Bone and Flesh-N-Bone, they use a melodic, fast-flowing style that was something new to the hip-hop music genre.

The EP only really has 5 songs on it (not including the intro, 'Mr. Ouija' and 'Moe Cheese' which is the instrumental to 'Foe Tha Love Of $') which is the reason why I couldn't give it 5 stars. Their second album is overall stronger than this EP and is the group's highpoint of their career, I strongly recommend both of these CDs because they mark a changing point in hip-hop music.

this is a classic!! i had this on cassette when it first came out, and this album still doesn't disappoint. to have this kind of talent and to still put out albums whether solo or group efforts...is awesome!! you looking for classic hip hop, especially music that changed hip hop...bone thugs is all that!!

This is one of my most loved albums in my collection and even though i am i huge fan of mostly west coast compton music this album has a unque style to it which is/has never been heard before or since

This is bone thugz second album even though alot of people do think it is there first, this is due to them changing there name when coming on to "ruthless records" B.O.N.E was the original name of this group.

This is a short album but please dont let this put you off buying it, it has well put together lyrics which need plentty of attention to pick up and maybe even needing to look up the lyrics.

This is by far there best album in my eyes

crazy lyrics with an exremely fast tempo. eazy e also come in with lyrics on the song " for the love $ "

The album was produced by eazy e and yella so expect only the best dark yet catch beats placed under so great lyrics and is one of my " must haves " to any hip-hop fan.

Very pleased.......2007-06-10

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this CD. True, I could have listened on line before buying but that would have taken the fun out of the purchase. Besides, I really didn't care for the CD the first couple of times I listened but now I really love it. It's not something to listen to all the time but given the right circumstances e.g. a small gathering of friends, it's perfect. If I'd listened to online, I wouldn't have purchased it.

Sumptuous and mellow.......2002-11-28

The six men of the King's Singers present sweet and light-hearted madrigals of such English composers as Morley, Weelkes, Dowland, Wilbye and Byrd. The thirty five selections include "Now is the Month of Maying", "Though Philomela Lost Her Love", "Sing We and Chant It," the celebration of tobacco entitled "Come, Sirrah Jack, Ho!" and a host of other fa-la-la-la-la venues interspersed with wistful laments. I love the rich, sonorous sound of a male vocal ensemble, with countertenors, tenor, baritones and bass, and these six singers do a great job. Occasional instrumental accompaniments by lute and tabor are included, but this group doesn't really need it--I could listen to them for hours all by themselves. Also quite enjoyable, as well as educational, is their earlier release, "The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour: Italy, England, France, Spain and Germany". For a more risque' take on the vocal music of Renaissance England, you might get a kick out of "The Art of the Bawdy Song" by the Baltimore Consort with the Merry Companions.

One of the Best Collections of English Madrigals.......2002-03-27

Any fan of the King's Singers will regret not having this album in their collection.

This album offers a veritable feast of the choicest English madrigals found on any comparable album. From the obligatory "Now is the Month of Maying" and "Fair Phyllis" to the more obscure "Tan ta ra, cries Mars," there is certainly enough on this album to bring a smile to lovers of Renaissance music - and a spark of recognition to anyone who sang traditional madrigals in high school or university. For serious students of early music, this album comes very highly recommended.

Among the more sonorous offerings on this album, Jones' "Farewell, Dear Love" and Dowland's "Come Again," cannot be ignored. Nor can Bennet's immortal "Weep O mine eyes" be matched more musically than here by the King's Singers.

This album has been played again and again for almost 6 years as both serious listening and background working music. And it has yet to lose its delight.

A Delightful Collection of English Madrigal.......2000-08-16

With 35 tracts to enjoy you're sure to find a couple of favorites. I gave this CD 4 of 5 stars compared to 5 stars for the King's Singers World Madrigal Tour CD. If you prefer all your songs in English, this will be your 5 star CD. Tract 32 "Come again" is my favorite due to the surperb tenor lead and melodic development. Compared to many polyphonic early music styles (1300s-1485), this era (1500-1610) provides many memorable melodies.

This is an excellent sampling of English madrigals. This presentation, given by an older roster of the Singers, is a nice introduction to the world of the madrigal, and English madrigals in particular.

Opening at the tail end of 1948, Kiss Me, Kate became an instant classic--and amazingly didn't receive a full-scale revival until 1999. All the more reason to revel in its original version. With its cunning play-within-a-play premise (a musical update of The Taming of the Shrew reverberates in backstage feuds), brilliant mix of high and low comedy, and of course some of Cole Porter's better-known songs--"So in Love," "I Hate Men," Too Darn Hot," "Always True to You (In My Fashion)"--Kiss Me, Kate remains a funny, zesty hall of mirrors. The best and maybe the last CD of this great musical........2006-02-20

Now is the perfect time to buy the CD of this.

Sony's transfer engineers used state-of-the-art restoration software to remove the roughness and surface noise from the originals, but (thankfully) they resisted the urge to tart-up the sound with artificial reverb, faux stereo, and thundering bass. This is by far the best-sounding CD of this ever released, and it may be the last.

The age of music ownership in America could be drawing to a close. Five years from now, this music may only be available by download, you might only be "borrowing" it, and it probably won't come with the the authentic cover art or the 26-page booklet.

Beautiful remastering of historic original cast recording.......2004-05-24

Recorded in January 1949, this album of KISS ME KATE has remained in print adn a steady best-seller for over 50 years now.

The sound on this newly remastered CD is crisp and clear and easily surpasses all previous issues. Sony even uses the original artwork from the very first LP release.

The performances remain as fresh as ever. Alfred Drake was Broadway's top leading man and sounds just glorious. Pat Morrison had less of a career but sounds just perfect as Lilli. Lisa Kirk is wonderful as Lois, and Harold Lang makes the most of his few moments on the record as her boyfriend, Bill. In an unusual move these peopel reunited 10 years later to re-record the score for Capitol in true stereo. They still sound great on that recording (on CD as part of the Broadway Angel series) but the performances are fresher on this recording made just 2 weeks after KIS ME KATE had opened on Broadway to rave reviews.

The CD booklet has good info about the show, though curiously, no synopsis. There are, however, a half dozen pictures of the original production. This edition featureds longer takes of "We Open in Venice", "I Hate Men" and "Too Darn Hot" though the total extra music adds but a minute to the album's running time. A bonus track of the Overture dates from a 1958 stereo recording by Lehman Engle.

KISS ME KATE was the first Tony Award winner for Best Musical (1949). The 1999 revival won a Tony for Best Revival.

the peerless original cast.......2004-03-04

KISS ME KATE is still regarded as Cole Porter's greatest musical; a charming backstage story detailing feuding ex-spouses Lilli Vanessi and Fred Graham as they star in a musical version of Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew".

Very rarely has the score been bettered than the original 1949 cast album, reissued here on the Columbia Broadway Masterworks label. Patricia Morison plays Lilli, with Alfred Drake (OKLAHOMA!, KISMET, GIGI) as Fred, the feuding, ego-ridden leads. Lisa Kirk (ALLEGRO, MACK AND MABEL) is the sexy young starlet Lois, with Harold Lang (PAL JOEY) as her caddish boyfriend Bill.

KISS ME KATE opened at the New Century Theatre on Broadway in 1949, making history in its run of over 1000 performances. Patricia Morison is perfectly-suited to the role of Lilli. She offers a glowing rendition of "So in Love", whilst her duet with Alfred Drake in the tongue-in-cheek "Wunderbar" is sublime. Lisa Kirk gets three of the big showstoppers ("Why Can't You Behave?", "Tom Dick or Harry" and "Always True to You in My Fashion"), and nails each and every one. Harold Lang was a better dancer than he ever was as a singer, but is quite good on this disc.

A must-own.

Who Put The Shake In Shakespeare?.......2001-04-11

Who put the 'shake' in 'Shakespeare'? Cole Porter, of course! Kiss Me Kate is the best of his musicals, and this recording is the best of the recordings! The original Broadway cast performs with much old-style, vaudeville jazz!

The story is set in a Baltimore theatre where a divorced couple, Fred Graham and Lilli Vannessi, are in the two leading roles of a musical version of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. Fred currently dates a colorful light-heart named Lois Lane, while Lilli is about to head off to get maried in the south. Lois, by the way, will 'always be true' to her boyfriend, the gambling player Bill Calhoun. The story takes off from there!

The show originaly opened on Broadway in 1948. It's timelessness has still not worn off after so many years. The classic script by Bela and Sam Spewack, and the best music of Cole Porter, we cannot fail! The show has been performed since then in many many countries, and has been performed in many languages! It has only recently been revived on Broadway.

Kiss Me Kate has become a staple of classic Broadway, and this is the cast that will not be outdone. Patricia Morrison is a perfect, operatic, Lilli Vanesi. She is strong, yet thoughtful. Her voice fills the CD with a lively 'Wunderbar' and the raging 'I Hate Men.' Alfred Drake is a manly and appealing Fred Graham who will have you laughing out loud! His 'Where Is the Live...?' is yet to be surpassed. Harold Lang is a sexy, and hypnotic Bill Calhoun. He takes the role for himself, and his 'Bianca' is done to the point of perfection! His voice is misty and self-confident, and has the qualities all Bill Calhoun's should. And of course, there will be no one as good as Lisa Kirk for the role of Lois Lane! Her tongue-in-cheek performance on this CD is flawless! She is teasing, sympathetic, funny, and has the right voice to win her part! I can't imagine anyone who can do what she has done with 'Alway True to You' and 'Why Can't You Behave.' The classic character songs are very nice! The balladic, and melodic 'So In Love' will ring in your head. 'We Open In Venice' will make you dance! And 'Brush Up Your Shakespeare'(performed with much humor by Jack Diamond and Harry Clark) will give you a laugh the next time you read 'Romeo.' You won't be disapointed!

The nostalgic quality of the 40's is alive and well in this recording. Columbia has done a great job restoring the work, and the scratching that were a part of the original releases. The sound quality is crisp and clear, and the music sounds wonderful! The magic hasn't worn out yet!

There have been a few more recordings of the work, including a complete London recording, and the new Broadway revival cast. None can do as well as the original recording, however. In the revival recordng, however, they come close. Brian Stokes Mitchell has the voice for Fred, but runs through his lines a bit fast, and without much enthusiasm. And the orchestrations for the new recording are a bit overdone, and they sound more like PBS's Jazz, than Broadway.

Altogether, this is great recording. I was very pleased with my buy, and hope that you will add it to your collection right away! It's time to Brush Up Your Shakespeare!

TIMELESS BROADWAY SHOW.......2001-01-11

COLE PORTER'S most famous musical play hasn't lost none of it's power over the years;it's one of those few shows in which all the elements clicks:cast,songs,libretto, to make a great entertainment product.Without getting to cynical,KISS ME KATE has enough good songs to fill 3 BROADWAY shows of today ,and i am not kidding,it's a fact.While the revival is also of interest,it's always a delight to hear the original with PATRICIA MORRISSON and ALFRED DRAKE, both terrific in their parts.I can assure you that you'll play this record more than twice.It's not only WUNDERBAR ,it's WONDERFUL!You can't actually single out one number because they are all good.All right, if we have to choose one, it's SO IN LOVE.

I "discovered" Mae West at the age of 12, when a local NYC TV station offered several of her classic films for multiple showings during the summer of 1966. As a soon-to-be-budding gay man, I immediately fell in love with her wit and unabashed approach to sex and sexuality. Over the next several years, I came to appreciate her even more, when I learned that she had actually written many of her own screenplays. I later learned that, even if this was something of an exaggeration, she did write the play that her first starring vehicle was based on, and she also "suggested" dialogue and one-line witticisms for many of her 1930's films. She probably also wrote much of the screenplay for My Little Chickadee, her 1940 vehicle co-starring W. C. Fields.

As time passed, my fascination for her faded, as many of the interests of youth do, but I always retained a respect for her marvelous wit and wonderfully colossal ego. By the time she died in 1980, she had fallen out of fashion with many of her gay male fans, including me, but I did feel an enormous sadness at the passing of such a durable icon. Through the years, I had managed to acquire just about all of her recordings, and came to have a special love for the natural, amazing comic timing and delivery she presented in her vocal efforts, which never strayed far from her style or persona. Now that I am over 50, I have a renewed appreciation for her unique talent, especially since many young people of my acquaintance have (sadly) professed no idea of who she was and what she did. I take heart in the fact that, once exposed to her wit and awesome comic abilities, many people who hadn't even been born when she died at the age of 87 seem to warm to her charms immediately.

The bulk of the tracks contained in this recording are available on other CD's, with the exception of the 1947 Mezzotone recordings (presented here nearly complete) and the extremely rare (I'd never heard it before) 1934 commercial 78 of My Old Flame, with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. On that track, Miss West receives extremely sympathetic accompaniment from the Duke and his great jazz sidemen, which may have something to do with the fact that she and Ellington were lovers for a time, or so I have heard it strongly rumored. For a minute, I thought that the previous reviewer here who mentioned the inclusion of this track was mistaken; the opening verses on this recording sound exactly like the version from the movie soundtrack that fans of Miss West have treasured for years. But after the first chorus, it takes a different and lovely departure from the film soundtrack, and it is clearly a studio effort recorded for the commercial 78 market. What a nice surprise; it's been many years since I'd heard anything "new" by Mae, and this track alone makes the CD well worth its rock-bottom bargain price. I do have one correction to the other review here - according to the liner notes, the 78 of My Old Flame was actually a Victor and not a Brunswick recording (the songs from She Done Him Wrong and I'm No Angel were released on Brunswick 78's).

The bulk of the Mezzotone sides have also never (to my knowledge) been available on CD before, which never bothered me - I had long ago converted most of Miss West's rare vinyl albums to digital (thanks to the magic of modern technology). This CD leaves out the novelty song, "Page 54", easily the weakest of the eight comedic novelty numbers that comprise the Mezzotone tracks, but it does include the extremely rare "Imaginary Love", one of Miss West's few attempts at serious romantic pop. The inclusion of this track alone makes this CD a must for fans, even for those who have never heard the other relatively obscure Mezzotone sides before. Those fans are in for a treat. Her comic timing, delivery and wit shine through on every track, and the sultry delivery she presents with the song, "Come Up and See Me Some Time" makes it my all-time favorite of her "early" efforts. The song "Come Up and See Me Sometime" was originally recorded by a male singer named Cliff Edwards in 1933, as a tribute to the fact that her famous signature-phrase had entered the English lexicon immediately following the release of She Done Him Wrong. As for the other Mezzotone numbers, the self-parody combined with the poke at censorship of "That's All Brother" is delightful, as is her trade-mark double-entendre and comedic sexual content that permeate each of the other 1947 tracks.

Although the soundtrack recordings presented here have been available on other CD's, they appear to have the benefit of careful re-mastering, and I was impressed by the sound on most of them, despite the disclaimer that they "emanate from soundtrack recordings of the thirties that are primitive by today's standards". I think they sound just fine.

The CD concludes with four tracks from her finest effort, the 1954 Decca album, "The Fabulous Mae West". That album is now also available in its entirety as a separate release, and if you are a fan of the lady and have never heard it, I can only tell you that if you don't pick it up, you are missing what are arguably her greatest and funniest moments in the recording studio.

The "Come Up and See Me Sometime" compilation is a product of the British label, Living Era. I own several of their other titles, which always contain an amazing number of high-quality vintage recordings. I am very happy with all the Living Era CD's I own.

Now, if someone would just see fit to release her marvelously campy 1960's rock and roll albums, Way Out West (which contains surprisingly hearty and effective vocals, considering she was 71 years old at the time it was recorded); the elusive 1968 release, "The Naked Ape" (also known by its reissue title, "Great Balls of Fire") and her curiously blues-infused Christmas album, her CD catalogue would be complete. I had converted the first two of these to digital CD's from original vinyl pressings some time ago for my own use, along with the ultra-rare 20th Century Fox 45 release of the two songs from Myra Breckinridge, but official re-releases of her late material is all that is lacking in the Mae West audio canon. A major revival in the interest of her wonderful and unique presence is long overdue, and these tracks help pave the way for that happy possibility.

Goodness sure had nothin' to do with Miss West's style of delivery when she sang. But, she is so wonderful!
To the fans who think you already have everything she ever recorded - you're wrong! This CD set includes "Imaginary Love" and the single of "My Old Flame" that she recorded separately from the movie version. It's great to hear the song all the way through. This version has previously only been on the Brunswick 78 RPM record. Rare piece of memorabilia.
It's worth it just for these alone.
Of course, there are errors in the liner notes concerning her career- there always are, for some reason.
Buy it!

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

One of the most beautiful Christmas albums .......2005-11-22

I love Kathleen Battle's voice, and to get such a great collection of beautiful sacred music, it was like a dream come true. She sings many traditional carols like Holy Night, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Silent Night, which is possibly my favorite here, you may think you have heard this song so many times, but Kathleen's voice really shines in it. Her English diction is so incredible, you can understand every word, which is not something many opera singers can achieve. Her singing is always so natural and lovely. Many other songs are oustanding on this album, I love the two version of Ave Maria and the Italian song Gesu Bambino. If you are looking for a really beautiful collection of Christmas music, this album is a great choice.

A Christmas Collection For The Ages.......2005-11-13

If there is one performer I miss hearing on a regular basis, it is Kathleen Battle. Anytime I knew that she'd be in a Metropolitan Opera radio broadcast, I knew it would be a performance to remember and more often than not, I was correct. She has a light voice that reaches the upper reregisters with ease and has as a gorgeous sound. She not a regular at many opera houses these days, and in likelihood, if she still did perform on the world's opera stages, we'd be hearing critics say her voice was not what it once was, but thanks to her recorded legacy, her voice will, always have that youthful, energetic sound.

Overall I believe that Ms. Battle performs better in complete opera recordings than recital albums, but most of her recital recordings are of at least good quality and this Christmas collection is outstanding. She handles all of the works with apparent similar ease, but since the recording is so varied, this is a compliment to her skill as a performer. She begins and ends with "O Come All Ye Faithful" where she does a few vocal acrobatics but it's never overdone. Each time I think of what the bets part of the collection is, my mind changes. She brings her skills from the operatic stage in her renditions of "O Holy Night," "Gesu Bambino" (only Pavarotti sings this better, but it's a very close second), and "The Zither Carol" which sounds so much like something that could come from the mouths of Oscar from UN BALLO or Zurbinetta from ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, two of her signature roles. The music from the African American Spirituals tradition and American background are well done and the accompaniment of the Harlem Boys Choir, used to great advantage here adds so much.

With so many Christmas collections from the world of opera available, choosing one can be difficult, but this is one collection that has proven to be a joy for almost fifteen years and will continue to give holiday pleasure for years to come.

In a world where disturbing things are all too common, Christian scripture guides us to dwell on that which is lovely. Kathleen Battle's blessed voice is most certainly one of those lovely things.

I bought this CD in the early 1990's, and I am here to buy it again because I have worn out the original with scratches, etc. I only listen to it during the Christmas season, but I enjoy it enough to hear it all year.

The 'Christmas Celebration' CD should be enough to convince you to also purchase Kathleen's 'A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert'. Ms. Battle's wonderful soprano voice is joined by that of the mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, and the blending is more than memorable. There are a couple of songs which are on both CD's, but you'll want to hear both. In fact, the video of the PBS special is also available, and I recommend buying all three. You won't regret it.

Some of my favorite selections from 'Christmas Celebration' include 'Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabelle' and 'Fum, Fum, Fum', both of which are from a culture different from my own. I found such glimpses into unfamiliar favorites to enhance my own enjoyment of the Christmas season, as long as all of my traditional American favorites were included. They were. "I Wonder As I Wander" and "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful" are there among the other favorites.

This CD's music is the kind that sets a wonderful Christmas mood. It can establish memories that say "Christmas" in the memories of children for life. Along with other classics like 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' and 'The Nutcraker' (from your favorite orchesta) and George Winston's 'December' and a few others, you will slowly be able to assemble a Christmas music library that will stay with you for life.
