One listen to the eagerly anticipated third CD from the world's biggest girl group and it's clear there is one child with the most destiny. To paraphrase the hip-hop legends, "Who's house?" Beyoncé's house, and with the lead vocalist producing or cowriting all of the 14 tracks, it's hard to imagine what those other two chicks even do (other than act grateful to still have a gig). Seizing creative control is a bold move for Miss Knowles, and anytime an R&B act eschews the beat of the week, they have to be commended. But the problem is that Beyoncé, even with her ambition, has yet to suss out that the key to a pop-R&B smash is hook and melody. With the exception of the now-played-out title track (Can we all take a moratorium on this mighty goddess theme for a second, please?) and the equally you-go-girlish "Independent Woman Part 1," most of the tracks here lack a strong core. Beyoncé crams a litany of thoughts and motifs into her mini-anthems, with samples ranging from Stevie Nicks to Tarzan Boy, but though the cuts sizzle and sparkle and throw off much attitude, Survivor is way too frenetic. Even with some strong singing and songs (most notably the laid back "Fancy"), Survivor lacks real emotion. --Amy Linden

Right away, I will say that this album is a hot mess. This album has nothing but fillers and if it wasn't for the turmoil from the original lineup this horrible album wouldn've ever surfaced. For the exception of "Survivor", "Independent Women Part I, "Brown Eyes", and "Dangerously In Love" the rest is horrible. If you don't have this album, download it instead or you'll be disappointed.

Destiny's Child Still Surviving.......2006-07-26

Destiny's Child has always had a fresh, upbeat sound. They are still carrying it throughout this album, I wasn't let down when I bought it. The songs are hot, they make you want to dance a little and sing along.

The songs that were released as singles were all amazing. "Independant Women" was a great release and appeared on a major movie soundtrack, Charlie's Angels. The song "Survivor" took the world by storm, I must have listened to it a thousand times in one week it was so good. "Bootylicous" was a great song to sing along with, it just made me want to hear more and more Destiny's Child.

There are a couple of songs that just never got through to me, but that's common on most albums. But that's probably just me, because I am mostly into more upbeat songs, and a couple of them weren't. But the overall the album was great, Destiny's Child really got down with the songs on this CD. I found some really great songs such as "Nasty Girl" and "Fancy". I'm glad I bought this album, it turned out to impress me.

Doesn't the mediocrity of this cd disprove the claims that Latavia and Letoya were just "backup singers" who were in the group just because they were all such great friends? The Writing's On the Wall is a much better album, and that's not an accident.

You can't screw with chemistry. The first lineup had it. This one didn't. Now they're over. And the world sighs with relief that the fakeness and pretend love and togetherness no longer has to be witnessed.

Now to be fair, half the cd ranges from tolerable to good. The other half is obvious filler. The album as a whole is over-produced and lacks soul that rhythm and blues is supposed to epitomize, therefore it must not be r&b afterall. But this is no real revelation.

My fancy apple pie a la mode gives me a happy face and shiny brown eyes. Knowing that I am an Independent Woman. I know I can find a sexy daddy who will bring me emotion and make me feel like I'm dangerously in love. Even though........ My story of beauty has a sweet, sassy gospel melody. I know I am talented. Forever I am not a nasty girl, I am forever bootylicious and I have my mother to thank. So I want to say thank you. But my goal in life is to become a suvivor like Destiny's Child did when they recorded this album.

Let me start by saying that Pete Rock is the most underrated rapper/producer in the game. Next in line would be DJ Quik. Pete Rock's laid back flow continues to impress as he steps his production game up further with this great effort Soul Survivor. Standout Tracks: TRU MASTER(Inspectah Deck And Kurupt light up this first single), HALF MAN HALF AMAZIN(another classic combo with M E T H O D Man), RESPECT MINE, THA GAME(the best collabo on this album), # 1 SOUL BROTHER, ONE LIFE TO LIVE(Its the MC Eiht with soul brother # 1), TAKE YOUR TIME(relaxing without the mary jane influence), SOUL SURVIVOR, ITS ABOUT THAT TIME, STRANGE FRUIT and DA TWO(classic Pete Rock and CL Smooth track). Filler: Verbal Murder 2(Big Pun's verse was fire but the rest of the track was iffy plus the sampling of Fat Albert...... Pete Rock can do better than this. Bottom Line: Pete Rock's Soul Survivor is one of the best albums of 98 and is definetly a slept on album of 98. Pete Rock and the guests were blazing plus Pete is still nice with the production. One of the better albums of that year.

One of my favorite rappers/producers .......2007-01-03

Man what can I say about Pete Rock I love his flow. People know him more of a producer but to me he is a nice rapper also his flow as always been nice and is much better then most rappers out there and he does not get respect for it also. Now to his producing out of the world he knows how to lay a beat down and it would be a dream to be in the studio with him while he is doing his thing just to be in that type of hip hop enviroment where you breath and live hip hop is something that is what makes me still love hip hop even at 37. I dont have a favorite cut on this album as I like most of them and it will be the same on all of my reviews for Pete Rock you can say I am biased between him and Primo as I can never find a fault it is not like I am looking for one. I have at least 100 records from Pete Rock and will keep buying stuff that he brings out.

The perfect profile of 1990s hip hop.......2006-04-05

If someone asked you for an album that represented 90s rap, what would you give them? "Ready to Die", "Doggystyle", "Illmatic", "The Chronic"? I know for sure that I would right away hand over "Soul Survivor". Although it is not even close in recognition or popularity, "Soul Survivor" is an album that has everything that was great about 90s rap: intricate, focused old-school beats, well delivered hooks, and a guest roster reminiscent of any 1990s Source awards. Pete Rock shines brightly on his first solo album. Without partner CL Smooth, he is given space to work with his favorite artists and produce the kind of beats he wants to. He stays right on track, producing many peaceful, laid back, and beautiful beats with complex horn and drum patterns, along with a few harder, streetwise ones. Pete is not the greatest lyricist on the mic, but his guests hold their weight, for the most part delivering lyrics to fit the beats. Pete sings most of the hooks, and his chilled baritone voice is perfect for the job. "Soul Survivor" is a great album that should definitely not be slept on.

After his obligatory intro, he bursts in with the great "Tru Master", with the unlikely team of Inspectah Deck and Kurupt. The beat has horns, flutes, and bass, very well done, and the MCs reminisce over old times. On "Half Man Half Amazing", Method Man and Pete rock over a stringed production. "Respect Mine" has a great hook, head bobbing beat and good lyrics from the OC. "Tha Game" is maybe Pete's hardest track ever, with a tough instrumental and rappers Prodigy, Raekwon, and Ghostface Killah delivering hard raps. On "#1 Soul Brother", Pete boasts of his DJ skills over a spinning xylophone. "Rock Steady" uses an altered Erik B beat for a catchy track with Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz. "Truly Yours" teams some of the greatest ever (Pete, Large Professor, and Kool G Rap) for a diss track with a great beat directed at various people, and the sax loop is the same as in Nas's "It Ain't Hard to Tell", but he gives it new life. My favorite here is probably "One Life to Live", with a surprising appearance by west coast vet MC Eiht. The beat has muted horns and a peaceful drum pattern, and Eiht and Pete chronicle their careers. "Take Your Time" and "Mind Blowin'" are both beautiful, toned down tracks with creative production. "Soul Survivor" is Pete's best solo rap here, dropping lots of philosophy and thoughts over a great instrumental. "Da Two" is Pete and CL's reunion, and the excellent song with great lyrics, hook, and beats brings back memories. The last three tracks are all very strong efforts with an impressive roster, including Noreaga, Big Pun, Common, Tragedy Khadafi, Heavy D, Sticky Fingaz, Cappadonna, and Beenie Man.

"Soul Survivor" is one of the more complete albums of the 90s and a great compilation of the best MCs combined with the best producer of all time. This is one of Pete's greatest releases ever, and he shows exactly why he should be remembered as the world's greatest DJ.

Pete Rock, producer extraordinaire, MC and Hip Hop royalty. At the dawning of the 1990s, Pete Rock manned the boards and his MC counterpart C.L. Smooth handled microphone duties on two of the most influential and timeless contributions to Hip-Hop ever released. 1992's Mecca & The Soul Brother and 1994's The Main Ingredient have gone on to shape and influence an entire generation of music listeners as well as producers such as The Neptunes, Kanye West, Just Blaze and 9th Wonder.

Constantly producing and remixing music's brightest stars (Nas, Public Enemy, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, Notorious B.I.G., Run DMC, Q-Tip, Mary J. Blige) and having released a classic solo album Soul Survivor (1998) and Instrumental excursion Petestrumentals (2001) Pete Rock returns With Soul Survivor 2.

Acting as MC, and producer Pete Rock has assembled a cast of Hip Hop's most talented artists to deliver more than just a sequel to Soul Survivor. Pete teamed up with Dead Prez to create "Warzone", a club and street anthem for 2004 reminiscent of the heyday of Public Enemy and NWA when the music had so much soul that you couldn't help but dance to it, but at the same time it also presented a strong social message. Recently reunited, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth have crafted a summertime anthem titled "Love Thing", which brings to the forefront Justin Timberlake back-up singer Denosh. Other standout collaborations with Pete Rock on the album include the poignant Pharoahe Monch on "Just Do It", the soulful North Carolina group Little Brother on "Give It 2 Ya", and Slum Village's certified head banger "Da Villa". The album also features collaborations with Talib Kweli, Kardinal Offishall, RZA, GZA, Postaboy, J-Dilla, Black Ice, Leela James, Skillz and Krumbsnatcha.

The Soul Brother Like No Other {4 Stars}.......2007-03-16

When you talk about most Pete Rock releases, they're usually showcases for his production skills. Every now and then he'll drop these albums with him rhyming on them. On this release Pete plays the background and lets the guests handle all the rapping. Artists like Talib Kweli, RZA, GZA, Dead Prez, Kardinal Offishall, J. Dilla, Slum Village, Little Brother, Leela James, and a few others all show up to lend their talents to Pete Rock's excellent production -- the cherry on top, in this case, would be when Mecca & the Soul Brother resurface and drop two dope tracks. Even the RZA & GZA collabo -- even though I thought it would never work. Top that off with the musical snippets/interludes between tracks and you have an album that demands your attention. Any fan of the Chocolate Boy Wonder should be familiar with that aspect of P.R. releases.

As far as skip material goes, I found "Just Do It", "One MC, One DJ", "It's The Postaboy" and "Beef" fell under that category. Don't get me wrong, none of these songs have bad beats, but the flows and rhymes on them are forgettable -- with the exception of "One MC, One DJ" which actually has the opposite problem (great lyrics, forgettable production). Some may disagree, but I simply didn't feel those tracks. The rest of the album is definitely on point though.

Soul Survivor is nothing short of guaranteed satisfaction. It'd be nice to hear P.R. go back to those jazz samples every now and then, but the man still has an ear for production that no producer has been able to approach since he came out back in the day. There are a few tracks on this LP that fall short of Soul Brother No. 1's pedigree, but they are in the minority. With that being said, I still think a good 85% of the tracks on this joint are pulled off seamlessly. I recommend checking this out.

The Soul Brother is back.......2006-04-05

Of course this album isn't as good as his first one, I don't think anyone was exspecting it to be as good. It's a step below Soul Survivor, which means it is still good. What I like about it the most is that it doesn't have alot of guest apperances that were also on the first one. He did new stuff with a bunch of different artists. Great varitity. I think this album has some real hot beats, but the songs last too long. My favorite tracks are "Just Do It" w/ Pharoahe Monch, "Beef" w/ Krumbsnatcha, and "Appreciate" w/ C.L. Smooth.

SOUL BROTHER #1...ALWAYS.......2006-02-21

Even though this album came out two summers ago, I'm still bumping it like it's brand new. Pete Rock never fails to please and manages to stay consistant with the times. It's because of his golden ear and mastery of the boards that he continues to influence young up-and coming producers. With "Soul Survivor II", he makes the tracks for the artists instead of sticking to the horns n bass formula. The stand out tracks are:

1. "Truth Is" feat Black Ice- From Mount Vernon to Philly, Black Ice drops def poems like rainfalls and PR brings the heat. This track is about what happens when MC's with a message get into the industry.

3. "Just Do It" feat. Pharoahe Monch- Beat and rhymes so gutter, you'll be sick for a week. This is probably the dirtiest beat he ever made.

4. "Give It To Ya" feat. Little Brother- The very first time I heard LB and I'm still a fan to this day. Light, mellow track about their hopes of getting into this industry. Listen close to the 2nd beat. It's "Skinz" (Mecca & The Soul Brother)remixed.

6. "It's A Love Thing" feat. CL Smooth and Denosh- throws it back to the good ol' days. CL's laid back flow and PR's horns complement each other. Stuff like this'll have you begging for a reunion album.

7. "One Mic & One DJ" feat. Skillz- the rock n roll meets the menace from VA.

9. "No Tears" feat. Leela James- introducing Leela James ladies and gentlemen. Remeniscient of Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone. The soul you NEED to hear. Reminds me of "Get By" by Talib Kweli.

12. "Warzone" feat. dead prez- OH MY GOD. This track is undescribible.

13. "Da Villa" feat. Slum Village- the banger of the album. I was feeling Slum Village before this. But after this I realized what kind of beasts these two can be, 'specially Elzhi.

14. "Niggaz Know" feat. J. Dilla- who says producers can't rap? R.I.P. Dilla.

15. "Appreciate" feat. CL Smooth- Mecca & The Soul Brother bring the album to a full circle by giving thanks to everybody who's supported them over the years. The beat got 60's soul all over it.

All in all, this is arguably Pete Rock's most consistant and critically acclaimed solo album. By improving on his game and bringing more soul to the table, this is a testament that Pete Rock ain't going anywhere anytime soon.

I have been a Pete Rock fan since way back.. I use to tape him on the radio(mixing,cutting & scratching records)when he was on WBLS Friday nights b4 Future Flava's.

I like this album, the beats are on point except for the real commercial sounding stuff. Also, some (not all) but some of the guest appearances I am not feeling.

To be honest I prefer Pete Rock ryhming over his own beats.. To me his lyrics are just as good if not better than alot of the MC's that he put on his records.

I would have liked a little more turntablism on this album and even on some of his instrumentals. I don't mean scratching on every song but just a little more to blend in with those beats.

Overall, this CD is good, on point and far better than the type of so called hip hop that is out there now. The intro is hot and most of the songs are banging. You need a decent system to get the full effect of a Pete Rock track.

I look foward to the next Pete Rock release.

This is a great CD to unwind and relax after such a hectic day. Altough 'Back in the Fire' is a bit inconsistent with other songs, the rest of them are still sweet, great to cuddle up with your loved ones.

This Cd covers a wide range of selections that at one time or another have been favorites of everyone. He has blended his style and the arrangement of these songs so well that if we didn't know better we might think of the songs as his and his alone. I love to listen to them all, but my favorite is "Promise". I recommend this Cd to anyone who truly enjoys relaxing, pleasant, and comforting music.

In my opinion, Bobby is one of the most underrated performers around. He is just a wonderful songwriter. This cd has some good remakes but the highlights are original songs like Promise, Show Me, Don't Ask My Neighbor, etc. Every song on the cd works.

Anyone who listened to the Soul Survivor II instrumentals, know that beneath the surface of the talented, featured MC's and vocalists were gems so jazz and melodic they could have stood alone. For producers like Pete, consolidating their libraries of beats to 13 tracks for a full length is not easy. Too often producers are marginalized to the backdrop and their vast catalogs are rarely unearthed to the public.

Taken from the Soul Survivor II sessions, The Surviving Elements allows a window into Pete's process and gives listeners a chance to indulge in his musicality. Like Petestrumentals, The Surviving Elements is a testament to Pete Rock's love of the groove; a homage to a craft endangered by saturation, sample clearance legislation and pop crossover appropriation. Lean back, rhyme over it and spread the word!

Only Pete Rock would have the wherewithal to chop up my favorite Johnnie Taylor song into a rugged banger. There's also some obvious uses of Herbie Hancock and Curtis Mayfield (among others ;), which might explain why this went out of print so quick. In fact, I've heard Pete discredit this release as done behind his back. But still, it is one of the dopest records of all-time, even better than the hallowed Petestruments (which you can't even get with my favorite track, "what you waitin for" anymore). Tru headz who really understand beatsmithery need only apply. Get this before they really jack up the used prices, spark a spliff, and work on your turns or/and rhymes. Modern art.

This CD is definitly one of my favorite top 10 instrumental cd's of all time...now i'm gonna throw pete rock fans for a loop.. I recently heard "you remind me" being ripped up lyrically by cl smooth on a promo for cl's new cd "american me". The guy should have his hands bronzed.

From listening to the beats I can only come up with one conclusion why these masterful tracks were not used...the beats are too complex for most rappers to flow over. They are just another level. The drum track in Pimp Strut and the bassline in Fairground are all you need to hear to understand why Pete is the Chocolate Boy Wonder.

Yeah, pick up Petestrumentals as well.

STRICTLY FOR THE CITY..........2005-10-09

Pete Rock has been one of my favorite producers ever since he made "Mecca & The Soul Brother" with C.L. Smooth. Personally, to me he's Hip-Hop's answer to Miles Davis. With "Surviving Elements", it only helps prove my point. Building off of the strides of "Petestrumentals", here's an album with a whole array of different vibes. "You Remind Me" is the proper way to freak an Al Green sample and the later tracks, such as "Hop, Skip & Jump" and "(Pimp)Strut" have a soul reminiscient of those old 80's joints blasting at block parties. The light-headed feel of "Smoking Room Only" gives me the feeling of soaring over the city in the evening. "Midnight and You" is the definitive beat to play during a late night on the stoop with your peoples (real introspective), followed up to drive it home with "Stormy Weather", a quiet storm joint. The banger of the album is "U Are What U Are", very reminiscient of when PR was still with CL. And the album closes out with, "Intrigue", a somber melody with a feel that there is still more to come...

in this present age of predictability,cliche and the ever
present,highly overused moniker of "bling" or "krunk" over
saturation..its a joy to know that the artistry of the real
HipHop culture still shines through..and with aural masterminds
such as the legendary Pete Rock behind the sp1200;you know
thats exactly what the listener will experience'a-r-t-i-s-t-r-y.
mr Rock always has the distinct ability to take the listener on
a vibrational, soul drenched,jazzy journey .{he's quite consistant with this skill} and on "the Surviving Elements"there
certainly are no exceptions to speak of .Pete Rock is considered among the best beatsmith in HipHop HANDS DOWN.and a
major influence for up and coming producers such as 9th Wonder, Nicolay and others.if youre looking for the eulusive vibe,the soul thats so sadly missing in today's RB garbage.or just great

I am a survivor.......2005-10-30

For years Destiny's child was one of my favorite groups, I fell in love with them when I was maybe in the 7th grade. I remember "Independent women", later "Survivor" came out, but when "Bootylicious" hit the lists I bought this album. "Emotions" was one of the songs that made me buy it.
The bonus tracks are amazing too: "Perfect man", "My heart still beats" and "Dance with you", but as always Beyonce wanted being the attention center, specially on "My herat still beats" and "Dangerously in love"
Anyway, this good, buy it.

first off this is a very good cd with a lot of catchy songs and lyrics. i highly reccomend this to any fan of r&b songs. the purpose of this review is to let u know bout the extra tracks:

-DANCE WITH ME: nice fun beat wit a great chorus and possibly better then some of the songs they included in the american version of "survivor."

-PERFECT MAN: you can also catch this one on the "romeo must die" soundtrack. great beat, nice and exteremely catchy chorus and infectious and spacey dance elements. this is basically has the same theme as "apple pie a la mode" but a little more funkier.

-MY HEART STILL BEATS: nice ballad and chorus. if u love "emotion" off of "survivor" and, like me, wish that destiny's child would do more to expand their vocal talents, then this song is for you.

The "Reverend" is beginning to get his stride!.......2005-04-04

After reviewing Al Green's last three studio albums, I decided to rummage through my "archives" and look at earlier releases by the singer that I own. To my surprise, I had never critiqued 1987's "Soul Survivor," a hodgepodge of traditional, contemporary gospel, and pop "message" songs, made during the time that Green was first asserting himself as a minister.

While the title cut and "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" date themselves, due to 80's production values, the renditions of more traditional fare, like "Yield Not to Temptation," "Jesus Will Fix It," and "23rd Psalm," show the singer at his vocal best. These songs are staples of many a church choir or gospel quartet and fans of that style of singing will be most appreciative of Green's interpretations, respectively.

However, the singer really ascends into spiritual heaven with two covers: "He Ain't Heavy" and "You've Got a Friend," featuring a soul-stirring organ and vocal accompaniment from legendary keyboardist Billy Preston. This one song hints at what could have been if the two artists had decided to do a full-blown album of duets.

Al shows his versatality.......2001-04-16

This is by far the best Album Al Green ever made. His smooth flasetto, his exceptional "feel" and sparkling clean vocals are showcased on this album. With a formidable studio musician crew headed by Paul Zaleski & Errol Thomas, classic songs such as " He Ain't Heavy" and "You've Got a Friend" are showcasaed by a masterful "out of the way production" by Zaleski & Thomas. The classic "Jesus Will Fix It" and "Everything's going to Be Alright" will keep your toes tappin.

Green's voice has never been better.

If you really want a good song after a good song on a CD by Al Green that is not hyped, this is it.

Al Green definately has some good music but unfortunately you won't find any of it on this album, also I'm not just saying this because he "charges admission to his church in Memphis".

A "Soul Survivor" indeed........2007-03-22

During the mid-1980s Bobby Womack was signed to MCA Records. His 1985 and 1986 releases ("So Many Rivers" and "Womagic") were both superb albums which deserve to be reissued on CD. Nonetheless, this is a great compilation of a prolific--if lesser-known-- period of Bobby's impressive career.

The Soul Survivor's great MCA tenure holds well........1999-11-02

With the jams "I Wish He Wouldn't Trust Me So Much", "Let Me Kiss It Where It Hurts", "When The Weekend Comes" "I'll Still Be Looking Up To You", this Womack Collection packs a Soul wallop that one would be hardpressed to find in boxed-sets of other artists. This is one to get, and one to keep.

Survivor.....wha????.......2006-05-21

After glancing at it quickly, I purchased this CD second-hand, believing it had something to do with the Survivor TV Show.

But it has absolutely nothing to do with Survivor. It's an album of old songs about surviving relationships and such. Any oldies radio station plays these songs over and over again 24 hours a day.

If you're a Survivor fan looking for memorabilia, do not be mislead by the Survivor logo on this misleading CD. It doesn't even contain the Survivor Theme song.

This CD has nothing to do with "Survivor", so if your here because you're a fan of the show DO NOT BUY IT! This CD should'nt even be listed under Survivor. If you are a fan of oldies and most likly never heard of Survivor (I don't know how you're here but...) go ahead and knock yourself out.

Ok, so it is really just a nice oldies collection. But how can you possibly pass up on an album where just reading the song titles makes you laugh when you consider the "survivor" references. "I will survive", "Backstabbers" and "Rescue me". And the recordings are quite good.
