Finally a Messiah with fervor!.......2005-10-20
I've hunted a thrilling performance of The Messiah through 240 versions so far. This is the best I've found. Some are self-conscious, dutifully singing as instructed. Some are almost childish in their lilt. Some are overblown with so much bombast that you can barely hear the heart of the music. Some are concentrated on faithfulness to the original instruments. If you want a performance that will make you shiver with the power and joy of the music, this is the one. The singers are singing about GLORY. They sound as if they are ecstatic. The musicians are at one with the music and they create a virtual cathedral wherever this CD is played, just close your eyes. Or, let your own imagery, be it celestial, or of great oceans...carry you away.
Great recording!.......2003-09-22
There are so many performances of the Messiah out there that it is very difficult to point to a difinative one, but I'd put this in the catagory of the "very good" ones. As other reviewers have said, every performance is different and has its own character. Each has stronger and weaker points. Here the conductor and musicians have made good, solid musical choices. There is an amazing attention to detail which is not so obvious the first listen through but which makes the piece shine. The tempos seem to be right on, and there is no frivolous over-embellishment by the soloists. There is no attempt to be showey. The dramatic dynamics in the first section of the overture are interesting, but seem to work after you hear it a few times. This performance also includes sections which are often omitted (Second half of "He shall feed his flock," "Thou art gone up on high," "Great was the company of the preachers," and "Death where is thy sting"). I prefer the more intimate quality of a small ensemble of musicians to the mega-performances by the London Philharmonic, Vienna State Opera Orchestra, etc.. As with this performance, the smaller group lends a clarity to the music, where the larger ensembles can get a little "muddy" at times. Just my personal preference. Overall, this is a very good performance, and certainly the low price (being on the Naxos lable) makes this a clear choice.
Good and Bad.......2000-04-09
I was more interested in "The Messiah" for the religious content than as a music critic, but this was too much. The strings are tinny. The orchestra is plodding. The soloists and choir are thankfully very good and seem to understand the meaning of the words. It is a shame the sound mix is uneven. The male parts come across loud and clear, but the poor women. For instance, No. 9 Oh thou that tellest..., the soloist sounded like she was singing in an echo chamber far from the mike. This is one of the most disappointing versions of "The Messiah" I have heard in a long time.
This is a great recording!.......2000-02-11
I was really surprised with the new that the Messiah's New World premiere was held at Trinity Church in October 1770, twenty-eight years after it was written. This fact only will make one proud in having this CD among his collection.
Anyhow, this is nothing more than a historic detail and would not count if this recording had not an outstanding first-rate ensemble of singers. Without doubt there is no definitive version of Messiah. Each one has its own distinctive touch and feeling and exploring it is always a pleasant journey through imagination.
As stated by the conductor: "we must concede that performing Messiah with twenty singers and an appropriately balanced instrumental ensemble represents, at best, an imperfect comprimise", it will be easy to understand that this recording does not stand among the greatest and will probably carry some imperfections. I will mention two that kind of disppointed me a little bit. The Overture and the Chorus Worthy is the Lamb, for some reason misses the habitual vigor and strenght. Everything else is great and this is definitely a worth buying.

Tim Smooth made the comeback on this cd I have been waiting for. His 98' album wasn't as good as I expected but he pulled through on this one. In my eyes the best track on this cd is "Gotsta Get Paid" because it shows Tim Smooth's real talent. His tongue twisting talents on this cd are among the best. If you enjoyed his 1st cd then you should defintely think about purchasing this one.

+1/2 -- Inconsistent but with some high points.......2003-12-13
Like many great songwriters, Greenwich obviously longed to also be the star in the spotlight. Her 1960s song catalog, penned with Jeff Barry, is easily in the same league as other Brill Building legends like Neil Diamond, Gerry Goffin & Carole King, Neil Sedaka, and West Coast counterparts like Boyce & Hart. Greenwich's own recordings, however, turn up fewer such gems - they're good, many very good, but few match the brilliance of the underlying songs.
This Australian 2-fer combines a pair of albums, along with a 1970 single and an early bonus track. The first 10 tracks comprise Greenwich's 1968 LP "Composes, Produces & Sings." This is an album caught between the bubblegum of her Brill Building/Red Bird work and then-contemporary soul sounds. The result is some very fine sunshine pop, such as the transcendent "Goodnight Goodnight," along with tunes seasoned lightly by Southern funk. "Niki Hoeky" (sung the previous year by Bobbie Gentry, and the same year by Aretha Franklin) sounds like something Greenwich would have written for The Dixie Cups, and a cover of The Shades' of Blue "Oh How Happy" fits Greenwich nicely. Even better is the Bob Crewe produced call-and-response revival of the jump hit "I Want You to Be My Baby."
Tracks 11 and 12 collect both sides of a 1970 single in AM radio-ready mono. Both feature horn arrangements, with "I Don't Want to Be Left Outside" more dramatic than the B-side cover of the Marvin Gaye hit "Ain't That Peculiar." Tracks 13 through 24 represent Greenwich's second solo LP, "Let It Be Written, Let It Be Sung," recorded for Verve in 1973. Two years past the breakthrough of Carole King's "Tapestry," Greenwich finds herself weighed down with pedestrian mid-70s productions. This is especially troublesome when applied to the stellar catalog of her 1960s titles she chose to cover. The phased guitars, doubled vocals, muted trumpets, and soon-to-be-disco strings dissipate the youthfulness and naïveté that made these songs so brilliant in the first place.
The Cabaret-styled waltz-time "Be My Baby" is novel, but not in a way that will make you forget The Ronettes. The album's one true bright spot is a luscious take of "Goodnight Baby" segued into a Memphis-meets-Nashville version of "Baby I Love You." The searching French horn may be a bit over-the-top, but still, this megamix of Barry & Greenwich is a delight.
The CD closes with a wonderfully corny slice of 1962, "Big Honky Baby." It's a fine reminder of the great work Greenwich did as a vocalist with the Raindrops, and a nice root on which to hang these later chapters.
3-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings.

Great post-Red Bird EG.......1999-09-11
Well, first of all...you have to agree, as I do, that Ellie (slash Jeff) was truly one of the all-time great songwriters. I'm not gonna trot out the list of amazing songs she wrote...I figure if you've gotten this far, you know who she is. Lennon-McCartney level, no doubt.
That having been said, this album's a little bit of a letdown. I was hoping for another "You Don't Know" (see "The Red Bird Story") or two, but this isn't *that* good. So it's not nirvana...it IS pretty amazing stuff. The originals, anyway...her decision to do "Niki Hoeky" is pretty redoubtable. I mean, why dabble in Pat and Lolly Vegas when you can write as well as she does? Her own songs--"Baby Baby Baby", "Goodnight", and esp. "I'll Never Need More Than This", a great lost Spector/Greenwich/Barry song, are transcendant tunes. The production, however, is what keeps me from giving it 5 stars...it's (not-so) classic late-60's style, with a farty bass that never fails to annoy. But I hardly notice it, now that I've played it a few hundred times...Ellie's great songsmithery triumphs in the end.
If you love Ellie, you need this one.

Swing and a miss........2003-01-27
Ellie Greenwich, the much beloved and substantially overated singer/songwriter revisits her hits from the the 60's with a lot of help from producers (though she only credits them as co-producers or something along those lines) Steve Feldman and the late Steve Tudanger.
The tracks are all crisp and nicely thought out, the strings and horns by Artie Butler and Pete Dino are value plus and Ellie's vocals are fine. Ellie was one of the world's great background singers in her day and surely has a good idea on what to do with the music--it's just that she isn't a great vocalist sooooo, what happens here is something less than extraordinary.
What's my problem--well, in a nutshell either lack of balls or lack of heart. These major talents managed to take some fun songs, dress them up in designer jeans and somehow end up with elevator music.
Who's fault is that? I don't know--but if you read the liner notes, Ellie Greenwich gave herself credit for everything, so I must assume she takes responsibility for mining gold and finding plastique.
Too bad--I had a song on there that would have been better sung by Mrs. Miller--(loook it up on Google)
