Clear is a mature third album for English musician Tim Simenon, who began his career as a hip-hop DJ, making cut-and-paste sample records, but has since come to repute as the producer for Depeche Mode, Gavin Friday, and Meat Beat Manifesto. Favoring the same sort of producer's back-seat position, Clear features several different vocalists, allowing Simenon to display his versatility. Overall, the entire work possesses an edgy Beat-like quality. On "Empire," an emotive ballad that plays with the similarity between the words "empire" and "vampire" to describe England as a bloodsucking entity, Sinead O'Connor duets with the delicate vocals of newcomer Benjamin Zephaniah to beautiful effect. Reggae legend Bim Sherman offers the gentle "Sleepyhead." But it's Los Angeles-based wordsmith Justin Warfield that is most responsible for Clear's sharp punch, waxing lyrical about Willy Wonka over Simenon's drug-addled oboe soundtrack on "Brain Dead" and flipping silver-tongued lines on the single "Bug Powder Dust." --Tamara Palmer

5 out of 5 stars In the Clear.......2003-12-24

I remember Bomb the Bass back when they (he) were kickin' a** with 'Into the Dragon'. Back then my friends and I prayed to only two gods: Theme from S'Express, by S'Express, and Megablast by Bomb the Bass. Those songs served as my long-overdue introduction to house music.

'Clear' is several years down the road and a musical genre away from 'Into the Dragon', and despite my love of house I connect with the rap and rhythm here much better than I do with the mindless (yet fun) sampling that defines their earlier effort. This is as amazing a CD now as it was ten years ago, and I suspect I'll feel the same in another ten years.

I won't go into a track by track analysis, but there is much here to love. The only track I will mention is still my favorite - Braindead. Other songs may have received more press but this track is by far the best, in my opinion. I don't know what vocalist Justin Warfield did after this work but I hope it was just as impressive. The collaboration here with Tim Simenon is nigh on perfect. You need to check it out.

OK, one more track. If You Reach the Border, as another reviewer mentions, is a weird, odd, unsettling track. Still, you've got to hear it. It's amazing how Simenon and Leslie Winer created a song where you can somehow see the wasted, washed out woman speaking/singing the words here, drawing you down into a seedy, fleabag hotel of a world that's set to a trip-hop beat. I don't do drugs, but if I did I'd listen to this song while wasted.

5 out of 5 stars Dub, Lounge, Chill and more...!.......2000-11-14

Great vocals, a super chillout CD. If you're into K&D get this! The last track is a K&D remix that everyone loves... A super album for a late night or rainy day.

5 out of 5 stars Completely taken.......2000-05-15

I'm actually not a huge fan of this particular genre but this is undoubtedly a classic. After hearing a few songs on an internet radio station I bought this CD and was happy to find the same strength found on those tracks throughout the album. This is a punchy, hard rhythmed CD that never fails to get my head bobbing driving down the road.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Eye-Opener to those new to the Genre.......2000-02-23

Most people in the US have no idea who Bomb is, but most of us know all about the acts that he has produced (Soul to Soul, Sinead etc.) This album has many of his artists on it - but still packs the artist's own flavor - not unlike DJ Shadow's presence on the phenomenal UNKLE LP. This album truly fills your room. Big luscious bass chords and brilliantly orchestrated drum tracks get inside your head from early on...and while I don't like them all ("If you reach the border" is particularly creepy) the songs are fresh and original - each different from the last but again, with the deep, textured richness of Bomb the Bass. Justin Warfield writes great lyrics for "Braindead," and "Bug Powder Dust." How often do you have Men at Work, Jeff Spicoli and Wm. Burroughs all referenced in the same rap? Sinead and B. Zaphrania do a damn fine job in "Empire" as well. Great to chill to, make love to, drink to, smoke to - and probably in that order as well. Grab this one, y'all - most folks don't have it - but will regret that when hearing your copy.

5 out of 5 stars Tops Massive attack.......1999-07-09

This CD beats Massive Attack's "Mezzanine", in my mind, as the best trip-hop CD yet. Standout tracks are One to One Religion, Tidal Wave, Braindead, and Bug Powder.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Dis is not the best of ..........2001-08-20

I seem to be destined to be repeatedly disappointed by Bomb the Bass. I bought the 'Unknown Territory' album in 1991 entirely on the strength of 'Winter in July', which I felt to be one of the strongest singles for many a year. But despite the presence of such notables as Tull's Ian Anderson, there was nothing of the same quality or remotely similar to that superb single.

I bought this compilation last week, because it was cheap and because I'd had 'Unknown Territory' stolen in a burglary. Alas, the whole thing sounds terribly dated. The version of 'Winter in July' isn't even the classic single.

I had always assumed that Tim Simenon, the brain behind the band, must play the bass. But the band's entry in the 'Rough Guide to Rock' says that Simenon is a non-musician, a DJ trained in the ways of the studio engineer. The problem for a non-musician such as Simenon is that he's only as good as the tracks he samples ... and often considerably worse. (I know Eno also classifies himself as a non-musician, but he's just being very modest about his ability on the synthesizer.) Voice samples taken from 'Thunderbirds' and various DJs, which once sounded innovative, now sound tired. (I expect in a few years I'll be feeling the same about the more recent 'Reich Remixed' album.)

The best track on this album is #4, 'The Air That You Breathe' from 1991, which is closest in style to both 'Winter in July' and Seal's debut album.

3 out of 5 stars OK for now.......2000-12-22

but we need a re-release of Into the Dragon - I wore my original tape out back in 1989 playing it over and over, fantastic. Unfortunately, I cannot find another copy anywhere in the UK, and have to rely on a promo vinyl copy which, being cut only one side, has only half the album on. Best of will have to do for now, but melting my speaker cones with Megablast will have to wait, again

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, if only had Megablast..........2000-10-02

I don't know why this CD doesn't have Megablast: Hip Hop on Precinct 13 - perhaps there's copyright issues involved. Either way it deals a mortal wound to this compilation which rates very much as "some of the best". The previous reviewer here notes how difficult it is to find Unknown Territory as opposed to Into the Dragon. I've been on an eight year crusade to find a copy of Into the Dragon, only recently completed (phew!) because Sony have re-released it (hooray!), which should mean that Amazon should be selling it soon. It could mean they re-release Unknown Territory as well. For some reason Bomb the Bass albums have been deleted from production rather shortly after their initial release - Into the Dragon was long gone in 1992, but it looks like the long wait is just about over...

So in short - wait for Amazon to start selling Into the Dragon, and join in the prayers for the re-release of Unknown Territory - both of those easily eclipse the material here.

3 out of 5 stars Not QUITE the very best of..........2000-03-08

With only 'Enter the Dragon' and 'Clear' being the only albums available to buy these days (Lord Lucan is easier to find Than a copy of 'Unknown Territory'). This album is the only way of getting hold of SOME tracks.

However, it is missing some of the best tracks created by Tim Simenon eg. Love so True (and the Depth Charge mix), Winter in July (original), Megablast (original).

That said, this album is worth it if even only for a copy of Air you Breathe, but the claim of 'The Very Best Of...' is a bit cheeky!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A return to the Beat.......2002-10-01

There is some irony that a record of 'beat' music should pay such homage and debt to the Beat generation.

This is actually the original UK version of the Clear album, which seems to have recently been re-released for America as a remixed album, even though it is the American version that contains remixed tracks.

Bug Powder Dust sets an import starting point for this album, beginning with the quote "And now it's time to disucss your philosophy of drug use as it pertains to artisitic endeavour". This is sampled from the movie "Naked Lunch", which is based on the novel of the same name by William S Burroughs - a seminal and defining work of the Beat generation. The Beat novelists/poets experimented with and documented their addiction to drugs, as a way of pushing societal boundaries, similar to some elements of the modern electronic music scene.

This album follows the same path - tracing paths of drug addiction, particularly in tracks such as Braindead and 5ml Barrel, and songs such as Bug Powder Dust are written inthe style of the Beat writings. Lyrically, this is an excursion on addiction and its effects.

Musically, this is a great electronic album and an absolute classic. I bought it solely for Bug Powder Dust, but was surprised at what a good and cohesive album it is. This is not my favourite genre of msuic, but this is a classic.

Buy this one, and not the American version of 'Clear'.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Fab.......1999-10-26

One word of advice, dont buy the US version of this record. Pay the extra money and get the real version (UK version). One of the best records ever made.

Product Description

The 8th full length release from this noted Columbus Ohio quartet is a more of an unreleased "best of" than an "odds and ends" collection. Several amazing unreleased EP's (one recorded in 2000 for Epitaph, one in 2001 for the now defunct Glazed) make up the bulk of this LP/CD. A few b-sides (Aerosmith's Chip Away The Stone), Devil Dog's covers (Radio Beat, Death Of Mighty Joe) and unreleased cuts from last years Gearhead release "The Night Before The Day The Earth Stood Still" round out this must have collection. Expertly mastered by John Golden, it sounds more like a solid LP than a collection. Enhanced CD includes a 10 minute trailer for a New Bomb Turks DVD that will be released in early 2004.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Four Dead In Ohio..........2004-06-17

A quick surf of the web might lead one to believe that nothing much ever happens in Ohio, much like the Detroit suburb I live in, and because of the ridiculous, long-standing college football rivalry between Ohio State and the University of Michigan it's supposedly my duty as a Michigander to toe the company line and quickly dismiss our neighbor to the south as a place where men are men and the livestock are afraid. Feh...

Dead Boys, Rubber City Rebels, Pagans, Rachel Sweet, Devo, Pere Ubu, Tin Huey, The Bizarros, and, as much as I loathe bringing up her name, Chrissie Hynde (admittedly great until about the third Pretenders album, her politics now bore me to tears - to me, PETA stands for "People Eating Tasty Animals") are all reasons why Ohio deserves to step out of the long shadow cast by Michigan and, in particular, Detroit. For the life of me, I still can't figure out what the hell those guys in Guided By Voices are on about, though.

Taking their name from a character in 1980's forgettable "B" flick "The Hollywood Knights," the New Bomb Turks could probably give a toss what anyone thinks of Ohio or anything else for that matter. They came together in the college town of Columbus when the four members, all English majors, grew weary of sitting around with their thumbs up their asses and decided to form a band, a tale seemingly as old as civilization itself. From the beginning, the Turks seemed hellbent on administering a thorough amplified ass stomping or, at the very least, a deafening thrash about the head and shoulders. Ten years, eight albums, and four or five labels later, they show no sign of slowing down, turning down, or dumbing down.

After an amicable split from Epitaph, Gearhead threw them a lifeline and released "The Night Before The Day The Earth Stood Still" in 2002, recorded at a time when the band was without a label. Ballsy, eh? Gearhead, quickly garnering a reputation as a prime purveyor of joyful exercises in sheer volume, also had the good taste and temerity to release this compilation of mostly unreleased material (nine of the songs are covers) dating back to 1999 and three tracks recorded with Jim Diamond at Ghetto Recorders in Detroit. "Ad Nauseum" and "Action" (no, not the old Sweet chestnut) are ultra-crude and disheveled examples of sonic dementia, humming along at breakneck speed and bursting from the speakers like a spray of sweat. Eric Davidson's pyromaniac yowl at the end of "Action" nearly resulted in this scribe soiling his nappy.

Punters laboring under the impression that Steven Tyler and Joe Perry have (or had, prior to getting off dope) the market cornered on back-alley sleaze are advised to lend an ear to the Turks' cover of "Chip Away At The Stone." The stuttering, stop-and-start twitch of their cover of Warsaw's (the band which later morphed into beaten-by-life experts Joy Division) "The Drawback" is, quite simply, full grinding perfection, buttressed by Jim Weber's sawing, squalling, overly caffeinated guitar and Sam Brown's revved-up, Moon-like drumming. Unfortunately, at 1:31, it goes whizzing by much too quickly.

No slam on the Turks, but it's hard to imagine someone screwing up a song as great as the Devil Dogs' "Radiobeat." Quite predictably, they do themselves proud, belching flame and farting napalm, tearing through it like they've just slammed several pints and need to introduce Mr. Thick Dick to Mr. Urinal Cake. And it's probably safe to say that their breathless take on "Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young" has poor old Faron Young twitching awake from his dirt nap somewhere. The seven originals included here, such as "Buckeye Donuts," "Bad For Me," "Law Of The Long Arm," and "Sammer'd" (an instrumental with farfisa and organ) - all outtakes from "The Night Before The Day The Earth Stood Still" sessions - are testimony to the New Bomb Turks' take-no-prisoners aesthetic, the band preferring to pound their chests like primates, crank the amps and let fly.

Try as I might (well, actually I don't try that hard), even as I near the age of 50, I still find it near impossible to find fault with endless yet honest reworkings of the E, D, and G chords (or whatever the hell they are - it's all alphabet soup to me). Let's face it - nothing can be truly new in rock and roll ever again, but with topdrawer outfits like the New Bomb Turks around, does it even matter?

5 out of 5 stars Great energy that kicks you right in the head.......2004-04-28

If you don't like this cd then throw away all your albums you call "ROCK" because you should be listening to country music or something like that. How can you not like a band that can actually make an Aerosmith song (...).

4 out of 5 stars Head Bangin', Hips Shakin', Butts Wigglin'.......2004-03-27

This record is a lot of fun. Singles, b-sides and covers that flow together like a proper studio album. Fun and catchy and they even do my fave Aerosmith song. If they lost you a little with some of their Epitaph stuff have no fear, jump right back in with this which is what I did and I'm happy as a tick on a dog to be back.

5 out of 5 stars HOLY CRAP!.......2003-10-31

          5 out of 5 stars Beat Dat!!.......2005-11-04

Legend has it that DJ/Producer Tim Simenon produced "Beat Dis" for $500. The track hit number one in the UK and was one of the first true smashes of the burgeoning UK club and house scene, fusing samples with dance melodies, hip hop beats and scratching. Alongside the likes of Coldcut, Soul II Soul, Krush, LA Mix and Rhythm King label-mates "S Express", Bomb The Bass enjoyed huge commercial success during 1988-1989 when Britain's acid house "Summer of Love" was in full swing. Into The Dragon spawned the hits "Don't Make Me Wait", "Say a Little Prayer" and "Megablast" (the instrumental version of which, was used as the soundtrack to a popular computer game). Bomb The Bass videos were laced with skateboard action, Fila clothing, Public Enemy t-shirts and turntables.
Further Bomb The Bass releases were -to use a critics quote- more "mature" - with more focus on melody in place of samples and scratching. Into The Dragon is a time capsule that truly represents what was happening in the summer of 1988 in the UK and its production and spirit withstand the test of time. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Bomb The Bass - Into The Dragon.......2002-10-24

This 1988 album is definitively worth buying at least because of the original "Beat Dis" US 7 Inch Mix since you'll hardly ever find it on any other Bomb The Bass album or compilation. Note, that the 2000 "Beat Dis" compilation contains the 12 Inch Mix of this track. Besides, the album also contains other original versions of such hits as "Don't Make Me Wait" and "Megablast", especially "Megablast Hip Hop On Precinct 13". I highly recommend this album to all hip-hop and dance-pop fans.
