After five years on John Prine's Oh Boy label, Snider joined New Door Records, leaving behind unreleased demo and studio material at Oh Boy. Many artists, unsure of the quality of their outtakes and demos, resist releasing them, as the Beatles did until the Anthology series. Luckily, Snider helped compile this one, a collection of material (including a haiku) as powerful as his finished work. Beginning with a wonderfully loose rendition of his original "Nashville," one hears Snider's renditions of tunes he cowrote that were later recorded and released by his cowriters, including "Barbie Doll" and "Feel Like I'm Falling in Love" (Jack Ingram) and "Deja Blues" (Billy Joe Shaver). "Combover Blues" offers his satirical view of middle age. Ironically, "East Nashville Skyline," an outstanding performance featuring pedal steel legend Lloyd Green, didn't appear on the Snider album that used the song's title. The entire compilation reflects the raw immediacy of a field recording. In fact, that's what's endearing about it. Sometimes, even alongside a great studio performance, an earlier version, rough edges and all, packs a punch all its own. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars The Dust Settles Just Fine.......2007-05-25

Normally when a package of this type of music comes together, it's usually when: A] an artist is deceased/dead, B] the record company is trying to milk the artist from an old record contract of product still owed or C] there isn't really anything for the artist to say anymore.

Thankfully, none of those are the case here. In fact, what Todd Snider says and sings here is simply, well, simple yet memorable. Not just the solor material, but the songs with help from Peter Holsapple [dbs], Jack "selling out" Ingram [okay, that wasn't nice], Keith Christopher [The Yayhoos], Craig Wright [Steve Earle], Tommy Womack [duh!]and more.

If this is Todd just dusting off his slew of one-takes and mishaps, then I want more. My favorite Todd Snider yet.

5 out of 5 stars Rejects? No, treasures.......2007-04-08

Todd Snider's PEACE, LOVE AND ANARCHY is a collection of "rarities, b-sides, and demos" (Volume 1). Don't let that fool you...the songs you'll find in here could all have been put on Snider albums (hell, "Nashville" was, and others have been recorded by other artists). These are the kind of songs that just sit around and linger, until they get a record of their own; the result is a cohesive album that doesn't feel pieced together in the least bit.

A sarcastic version of "Nashville" (much more sarcastic than the version that appeared on EAST NASHVILLE SKYLINE) kicks off the album, which ends with the rockin' "Cheatham Street Warehouse." In between you'll find a whole slough of material that features Snider at his storytelling best. There are humorous pieces of course ("Combover Blues"), rockin' pieces ("Barbie Doll"), sad pieces ("Missing You"), thoughtful pieces ("East Nashville Skyline")...hell, there's even a haiku. The spoken-word "From a Rooftop" is a pure delight as well; not to mention the exquisite gospel number "I Will Not Go Hungry" and the Billy Joe Shaver co-write "Deja Blues." Let's face it--there's not a bad song on here. But that's Todd Snider for you.

The fact that most of these songs appear to have come from the EAST NASHVILLE SKYLINE project probably helps with the cohesion; not that this is a bad thing, because that album was arguably one of Snider's best. Really, none of the tracks stands out from the other, which is the way you want it to be. This is simply another great album in a long line of great albums from the incomparable Todd Snider. Let's hope there's a Volume 2 somewhere down the line.

5 out of 5 stars Great as always........2007-04-05

Another great album by Todd Snider--and not the typical outtakes/B sides junk that other people might put on an album like this. Every song is excellent, and there are 2-3 songs here that rank among the best Snider has ever recorded. His version of Stoney is better than anything on the radio. Try to listen to it and not be moved. I dare you.

Despite carrying still more of the apocalyptic trappings that have marked Busta's solo joints, Anarchy--touted by Elektra as the fourth in a trilogy, fittingly enough--is less a full-out blast of sociopolitical rage than the usual stack of free-flowing Rhymes consciousness. Both as winning and erratic as The Coming and E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event) before it, Anarchy nonetheless captures its star's unhinged style with panache and a handful of tour-de-force moments. (Check out the Stereolab sample on "Show Me What You Got" or the Busta/Raekwon/Ghostface Killah/Roc-Marciano crime-tale summit, "The Heist.") Finally, Busta deserves props for getting something worthwhile out of Lenny Kravitz--the off-kilter Rockwilder-produced funk jam "Make Noise"--long past the rocker's artistic sell-by date. --Rickey Wright

3 out of 5 stars Shouldn't be missed but.......2006-05-01

It could use some more work on it. The production on this album wasn't that good in my opinion. But Busta is one of my favorite artists, so I had to pick it up. Most people will say this album is terrible, but it isn't. The people who say that are just used to his previous three albums, which were all atleast 4 stars. I was pleased to hear some really good tracks on this album like Salute Da Gods!!, Show Me What You Got, Get Out!!, How Much We Grew, Ready For War f/ M.O.P., Why We Die f/ DMX & Jay-Z, and my personal favorite The Heist f/ Raekwon, Ghostface, & Roc-Marciano. Some real fire in those songs. Another good thing about this album is that there are twenty two tracks all together. He is just doing what every artist does, trying to make every album a little different then the last one. If you are a Busta fan you should own this album.

4 out of 5 stars Smooth Bass filled beats.......2005-11-26

Good Album Busta...I love this album! Nite time beats for a system great album and a must buy!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Solid Busta Album(4.5).......2005-11-06

"Anarchy" is one of Busta Rhymes' less popular albums, not featuring any big singles, yet nevertheless it comes through with some very solid lyrics, laid-back beats, and some great hooks. There are certainly great standout tracks on this Busta album, and it certainly isn't one to be overlooked.

The opener "Salute Da Gods" is a great beat, with a lively Busta Rhymes, lyrically explaining to us how great he's feeling. "Enjoy Da Ride" is more of a gangsta style rap song, with a relatively hardcore beat, and a growly Busta. "We Put It Down For Y'all" is more commercial, and catchy with the intense chorus, and the beat hook. "Bladow" is an album highlight for its musical beat, making it instantly memorable. "Fire" is probably however, the worst Busta Rhymes song I've ever heard. To begin, the beat makes it almost unlistenable for more than 1 minute, and the song is very skippable. "All Night" makes up for that blunder though, with a hip-hop style beat, and catchy lyrics. "Show Me What You Got" shows off Busta's outstanding rap flow, and his great sense of rhythm. Throughout the song, he is rhyming exceptionally off the beat. "The Heist" will be the favourite for many, with a great, hardcore beat, a song that you can really get into immediately featuring the guest Gostface Killa. "Here We Go Again" is Busta Rhymes and the entire Flipmode Squad getting together and producing another strong cut. "C'mon All My N*ggas, C'mon All My B*tches" has Busta Rhymes flowing at unbelievable speeds, making me question whether he was actually rhyming that fast or if his voice was sped up. "Why We Die" has Rhymes collaborating with hip-hop star Jay-Z and DMX, to produce a great song, with superb lyrics.

Overall, this Busta Rhymes album shouldn't be overlooked by any fan. It has a great deal of contrast, from harcore gangsta rap songs, to laid back hip-hop/rap tracks. Not his best, but certainly worth the money. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Anarchy and its songs.......2007-05-07

the Anarchy sessions from Chumbawamba is loaded with an album full of shouting danceable tracks that always leave you wanting to dance more...and they do! each song carries a strong lyrical ballad and the in-between loops are exciting and never dull, you'll never get tired of listening to Anarchy. this album is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars RE: Selling out.......2006-02-23

The album Tubthumper was made to show how easy it is for a band to make a pop album. Especially a band like chumbawumba! They made the album on purpose, actually I think it was in the CD insert for this album were they talk about it....

5 out of 5 stars Chumbawumba in their pre sellout days........1999-05-18

Awesome CD that has allot of good political statements and was released back when chumbawumba used to give a @$%^ about other things besides their pockets, the song about homophobia is awesome, and mouthfull of &*&% is dedicated to people like Neol Gallahen of Oasis who preach anti authirtatianism but hob-knob with the parliament, funny chumbawumba has joined his ranks, On a side note Lou is the ex singer of D.I.R.T., you should definatly pick up this (and the english rebel songs CD) but i would advise at a local record shop and on vinyl before you get a cd from here. Peace//Love//Anarchy//Equality

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful meolodies meet candid political/social statement.......1999-02-24

WOW!!! Having loved Tubhumper, I bought this album and Uneasy Listening. Both are sensational! Timebomb is so beautiful to the ears yet matches the toughest political statement ever made by Midnight Oil. Homophobia should be required listening in every high school. Chumbawamba combines the musical genius of Danny Elfman with social commentary as radical as that originally preached by Jesus of Nazareth. The most thought-provoking pop music ever written, but presented in such a delightfully pleasant way that you don't notice at first the significance of what is being sung.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the politics. The music is wonderful!.......1998-07-15

After a prolonged weekend with 7 friends listening to Anarchy for the first time in 1994, we all became hooked on the music. Most of the songs in Anarchy are at least as good, if not better, than Tubthumper, the single. Forget the politics - the beats and melodies in Anarchy are captivating and addictive. The lyrics are clever, humourous and meaningful, but this does not detract from the pleasure of listening to such a great album. I have been searching for a copy of this CD for over two years now, and I wouldn't be surprised if it showed up everywhere pretty soon. Be warned: you will get hooked.

3 out of 5 stars I got my copy autographed by Steve Corino, Nova, Dawn Marie and Francine!.......2006-01-14

Oh, my God! It's the second ECW CD! Unfortunately, it came out after ECW had gone out of business. So, none of the songs on here were actually heard in ECW. But, at least the songs are introduced by ECW stars. As for the music, it is mostly alternative hard rock. Not really my cup of tea, but the cover version of "Natural Born Killaz" is pretty cool.

4 out of 5 stars Solid.......2004-07-31

I dont even have the CD yet and can tell that its a solid cd that delivers. I dont know what certain people are saying when only three bands will be something in a few years...Maybe cause most of the have already made it. With Rob Zombie, Static-X, Linkin Park, Disturbed and Chaimara; all bands that have "made it" Not the bast CD in the world but if you want something to rock out with you out, this cd will do just fine.

2 out of 5 stars A waste of time and a waste of the ECW licence.......2001-04-14

From what I've heard of this album, it sounds dreadful. Apart from the decent tracks by One minute silence, Cold and Linkin Park (none of which are exclusive to this release) this is a unimaginative, bone-headed compilation of bands that will mean nothing in a couple of years. If you like wrestling, get a video don't waste your money on this.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2001-03-23

I listened to a sample of each song on the CD and there isn't one bad song on the entire CD. The songs range from pretty good to excellent. Superbeast and One Step Closer are my two favorite songs. I have already ordered my copy of the CD and you should to.

4 out of 5 stars the golden age of rock.......2000-10-26

This is an excellent compilation. Tracks from the usual suspects like Wire, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, and X-Ray Spex are supplemented by excellent tracks I had not heard by the likes of The Adverts and The Saints, plus others.

The energy, freshness, and vitality of the music really comes through this mix.

I wish they could have included The Clash in this compilation... it seems like they very much belonged but could not be included for legal reasons.

I had preferred the work of New York punksters from the same era, i.e. Talking Heads, Television, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, etc. But this compilation has turned me on to some other bands from the U.K.; I just might end up liking the British Punk better.

Looks like a good retrospective of Johnny's music... It isn't. The printed track listing gives songs the wrong titles, and some are live or demo versions without being identified as such. All of the LAMF songs are the original (muddy) mixes.

What you actually get:
Jet Boy (New York Dolls demo)
Born to Lose (from LAMF)
Chinese Rocks (from LAMF)
It's Not Enough (from LAMF)
Pirate Love (from LAMF)
Born to Cry (from Copy Cats)
Pipeline (live)
I Only Wrote This Song for You (from Que Sera Sera)
You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory (live, cuts off after the first chorus)
Little Bit of Whore (from Que Sera Sera)
MIA (from Que Sera Sera)
Get Off the Phone (from LAMF)
London Boys (Heartbreakers demo)
Too Much Junkie Business (Heartbreakers demo)
Personality Crisis (live, from Born Too Loose - at the end you get the beginning of the next track from that CD, Johnny talking to the audience at the start of an acoustic set)
Crawfish (from Copy Cats)
Hurt Me (unreleased studio version from Born Too Loose)
One Track Mind (from LAMF)

I'm tempted to give this four stars, since at least the music is still good.

where to start y'all. If you like JT, if you ever wanted to check the guy out, if you like the NY Dolls, if you like old punk, if you like Rock N Roll guitar, get this CD. It has the best collection of Johnny Thunders/Heartbreakers hits from long deleted vinyl singles,B-sides, live albums, and full length albums that are near impossible to get on cd. While every song rules, "Pirate Love", the Ramones co-written "Chinese Rocks", and acoustic "...Arms Around A Memory" standout. While most newly released JT cd's are mearly low quality bootlegs of the same few shows, where JT is usually "Out of it" this collection focuses on him at his wonderful best. Get it, rock out, then search for his other releases. You will like this if you are a Clash, Hanoi, NY Doll, Ramones, Pistols fan!@#

4 out of 5 stars Classic Punk Unearthed.......2006-03-08

This reissue was worth it and I've heard that Metal Urbain even influenced Big Black. However, except for the use of synths, I would put them closer to classic punk than the wide variety of sonic experiments that encompass post punk. The synths are played as direct punk instruments not as soundscapes for morbid, meandering lyrics. A manic, wired, Francophile version of the Sex Pistols with the synths for a change of pace. Not exactly Suicide as the songs are quite similar in length and tone but then again this was the early days of punk. However, as classic punk goes, this is up there with the best of them. Now if only I could understand the lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Is Paris Burning?.......2005-11-13

This is one of the best compilations ever. Metal Urbain are a terrific merge of Suicide and the best 70s/80s punk rock with Gallic gibberish lyrics...love the dirty guitar sounds and the 2001 space odyssey synthesizer while Clode Panik screams "Lady Coca Cola" at you...best tracks: Sweet Marilyn, Atlantis, Pop Poubelle, Hysterie Connective, Colt 45, Numero Zero...if you like good punk rock this will drive you nuts!

3 out of 5 stars Impulse Buy, but Worth It.......2004-04-19

This CD is testament to many things: 1) the failure of McLaren to make anything like a decent investment in his band's sound equipment, 2) the importance of having a competent bassist for any rock band, 3) How Johnny Rotten had to struggle to develop his voice, 4) How powerful that voice could be, and 5) the genius of the Stooges ("No Fun" is the highlight of the set). If you're a Pistols fan, this is worth the aggravation. But you should be familiar with "Bollocks" already, to know what song it is you're listening to...
