Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Album Description

Set amid the chaos of pre-revolutionary China, small time thief, Sing, aspires to be one of the sophisticated and ruthless Axe Gang whose underworld activities overshadow the city. Stumbling across a crowded apartment complex aptly known as "Pig Sty Alley," Sing attempts to extort money from one of the ordinary locals, but the neighbors are not what they appear. Sing's comical attempts at intimidation inadvertently attract the Axe Gang into the fray, setting off a chain of events that brings the two disparate worlds face-to-face.

The exotic original score by Raymond Wong is complemented by the film's classical pieces, notably Sarasate's acclaimed "Zigeunerweisen" and Khachaturian's famous "Sabre Dance."

5 out of 5 stars What about the dialogue?.......2006-04-08

I have a question about the dialogue on this CD... is it interspersed on separate tracks between songs, or do they talk during the songs?

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!.......2005-10-21

As a Chinese, I love this soundtrack and the movie very much! There is no more I can say. However, it's a good soundtrack and I love it very much.

4 out of 5 stars great CD, but incomplete..........2005-09-20

This is the soundtrack released to the U.S. Just so you know, the soundtrack sold in Asia features a few more songs. Most notably missing is a song preformed by Huang Sheng Yi, called "Zhi Yao Wei Ni Huo Yi Tian" which comes toward the end of the movie. It might be my favorite song in the movie, and it's too bad it's missing from the U.S. soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Soundtrack.......2005-08-20

If you have seen this unbelievable movie, then you know how incredible the music is. It matches the mood of the movie and everything the previous reviewer said I agree with. It has great sweeping scores with an extremely cool "oriental/chinese" sound and presence to it. I mostly bought it for a few cool songs I fell in love with when I saw the movie and the whole album is great. You will recognize a few of the songs used in a lot of other chop socky/martial arts movies and you'll really enjoy having them along with all the other great music on this soundtrack and it goes without saying, but if you haven't seen or bought this movie yet, get it. We need to encourage Stephen Chow and support him in his endeavors to make more great movies instead of the same old rehashed formulaic, cookie cutter, boring(need I go on?)"Hollywood Entertainment" fare.

5 out of 5 stars There comes a time when you find a soundtrack that's..........2005-06-14

...Absolutely perfect!

As a collector of various movie soundtracks, there are many times when I am utterly dismayed by how unrelated they are to the movies they are supposed to complement.

The Kung Fu Hustle CD, however, is far from any of that! I watched this movie four times in the theater, and every time, the music just mesmerized me from start to finish! The movie was great, and the music was even better!

I quickly ordered the soundtrack from Amazon.com, and when it arrived, I was far from disappointed. This CD is fantastic! It does not leave anything out. What you hear in the movie is what you hear in the CD from beginning to end. The tracks are even in order of which they appear in the movie!

If you enjoyed Kung Fu Hustle, then the soundtrack is definitely for you. Go forth! Purchase the soundtrack, and prepare to be pleasantly entertained by the delightful music!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2002-08-20

This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

4 out of 5 stars Late but convincing work from Lady Day.......2007-04-22

At the age in life when other singers were at their peak (for instance Ella), Billie was deteriorating rapidly; her voice was losing strength and collour...

But, since the strength was never her forte, and her sense of tempo, rhythm and emotion lingered on, she could still muster a convincing session or two in the fifties.

This double CD (of three LP albums) is a good example, full of genuinly emotional, but sometimes also ironic interpretations of great songs from Gershwin and company /with only one great instrumental number, recorded while the musicians waited Billie to show up/...

Edison wisely sticks mostly to the muted trumpet (too much open horn would outshine the star of the sessions), while Ben Webster is also reasonably restrained when compared with his own sessions. However, these are magnificent players (and so are the pianist Rowles and the guitarist Kessel...) providing a swinging back-up, in tune with the singers register and general idea of the song.

Naturally, this is far from Billie's Columbia gems from the 30's (with Teddy Wilson, Lester Young, Buck Clayton, Webster...), but since the sound is better from the technology point of view, this is a fine way to start exploring the legacy of, many would argue, the greatest singer in the entire jazz history.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous late collection from Billie Holiday.......2007-03-23

Love the sound on both of the CDs; the 2nd CD, which was released as the album Body and Soul, is really amazing - all of the sidemen including Sweets Edison and Ben Webster, do a great job of making the 2nd CD swing. My favorite tracks are Stars Fell on Alabama, One for my Baby, and Just Friends, although the best track for dancing is But Not For Me.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking music.......2007-01-23

This is the album that turned me into a Billie Holiday fan. Part of what makes Lady Day accessible on this CD is that you can finally hear her voice as she tells you the stories behind these songs, without the distractions on some of the technically inferior older recordings.

The songs, which represent the cream of the 20th century American songbook, were recorded over seven sessions; two in 1956 and five in January 1957. So, unlike some of her music that's available from the 1930's, these were recorded in stereo and the annoying hisses and pops are gone. Yes, this was late in her career but she is still strong!

She's working with some other legendary musicians here, too. Ben Webster on the saxophone is also a master at telling a story through music. Harry "Sweets" Edison on the trumpet and Jimmy Rowles on piano are outstanding.

Although I had always heard she was phenomenal, I never quite "got it" until I heard "All or Nothing At All." Now I understand why Sinatra spent hours listening to her in clubs to learn how to phrase a song.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation.......2005-10-04

Helpful reminder: This is a song for song collection of two albums you may already have; Songs for Distiguished Lovers, and Body and Soul. A great buy.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection.......2002-07-12

The songs on this CD are the ones you really want to hear. So often compilations fall short of depicting a great artist because they leave out so much. They usually only have the #1 hits and most requested songs that are already so easy to find. Not this time.

Here, the songs are all examples of why Lady Day's name is so closely associated with singing the blues. And in typical Verve fashion, the quality of the recordings is OUTSTANDING.

Billie Holiday's voice isn't the most powerful, the most refined, or the most acclaimed, but is it ever inspiring. Her ability to convey sorrow in a ballad is unparalleled. But one of the best things about this CD are the medium tempo'd, swinging songs like "Cheek to Cheek", "All Or Nothing At All", "Just One Of Those Things" and several others. You don't simply get lulled into sadness (for too long).

Highly recommended for the Billie enthusiast or casual Jazz fan. This compilation trumps others around it.

Album Description

They say good things come to those who wait. For over 10 years, Fat Joe has patiently waited for his opportunity to be among the greats in his field of music. Through years of hard work and dedication, Fat Joe made his mark on hip-hop music, film, clothing and the culture as a whole. From his humble beginnings in the bullet-riddled streets of the Bronx to orchestrating the rise of the late, great Big Pun to making a whole nation "Lean Back" in 2004, Fat Joe has run the gamut of hard work in the music business and will enjoy the fruits of his labor with the release of his 6th album, All or Nothing.

1 out of 5 stars Arent we tired of seeing Joey's crack?.......2006-09-11

I was hesitant to pick up this album so I did what smart person would do. I got a friend of mine who had that album to make me a copy. Im mad that even heard the album at all! Loyalty was proof that Fat Joe was going to stay pop for life. This album further proves that point correct. Decent tracks:MY FOFO(okay 50 cent diss), LEAN BACK REMIX, SAFE 2 SAY, TEMPTATION part1 and BEAT NOVACAINE. Filler: So Hot, So much more(awful beat), I can do you(gay song with a gay beat), Temptation part2, Intro, does anybody know, get it poppin(wack Nelly Collabo) and the rest of this album. Fat Joe is pop now so dont be surprised when you hear that his next album is even worser than this one. One last note: somebody PLEASE tell Dre from Cool and Dre to stop trying to rap. Dude is Nick Cannon JR!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2006-08-24

This album is terrible to put it simply. There are a few highlights such as the Lean Back remix but that's mainly due to the presence of Em & Mase. I'm surprised Em didn't realize how terrible Fat Joe is and am surprised he's actually do a song with him. But overall this album is bad, he thinks he can outdo 50 and the G Unit crew but he doesn't stand a chance. [...]

1 out of 5 stars Fat Joe.......2006-07-16

Y is fat joe so bad. Seriously he gives NY a bad name y does he rep us . Hes awful he really cant rap and the only reason hes still here is cuz big pun

4 out of 5 stars Impressed.......2006-05-04

Fat Joe, after being shot down by an overated diss from 50, came back. "All or Nothing" impressed me with the various styles in beats. You know, lyrically he killed it. The commercial songs; So Much More was nasty no matter what style you like. Get It Poppin, aaaa, not my favorite but hey if the women like it... The beats, from Beat Novacane and Just Blaze were nice. Alot of people like My FoFo, it was decent, could've been better. Songs to listen to: Intro, Does Anybody Know(He murdered this sample), My FoFo, Rock Ya Body, and Beat Novacane.

5 out of 5 stars What a Great Voice!.......2005-01-05

Adding another album to his growing list, Russel Watson presents 13 more tracks to his fans and new listeners. If you enjoyed The Voice and Encore you're definitely not wasting your money on purchasing yet another album.
Watson's combination of classical operatic pieces with symphonic pop orchestration puts a new twist on some old favorites. If you prefer listening to old remastered Caruso recordings this may not be the album for you, but if you like hearing old favorites remade with a twist and a great voice this is definitely for you.
With just enough spice to promote further interest and the same stunning delivery of each song as in his previous albums, Watson delivers another nearly flawless piece of work for us to enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars better, but still awful.......2004-12-15

ALthough he has improved immensely since his other recordings he still is incredibly sub-standard as an opera singer. Clearly, his adoring public don't seem to realise, or care. He continues to show a sloppy, ugly lack of technique and simply does not grasp foreign languages at all, not the italian which dominates this album, or the spanish, french or latin which is also included. Many of his higher notes are strained and forced, especially evident at the end of Granada.
The Grandiose, lavish orchestrations are again the best thing about this CD, and overtake as the star of the album.
The selection of songs is very pleasing though, with some surprisingly nice pop songs, which he actually does a decent job of.
He shamelessly imiates Dean Martin in That's Amore, and his impression is actually quite entertaining.
In the Pearl Fishers Duet, he arrogantly sings both parts himself, neither done very well, with the song irritatingly abridged to minimise the amount of singing he must do as a "baritone" (snigger).
Ave Maria is mundane, and uninspired in all aspects.
La Danza is tediously slow, with a dreadful orchestration and awful pronunciation.
Bohemian Rhapsody is a song that should not be redone by anyone, and this recording is dreary and uninspired.
Vesti la Guibba is done without much conviction. His cry of pain sounds like a forced laugh, and the "emotion" in his voice sounds incredibly false. He also ventures off-key at one stage.
Without a doubt, the best part og this album,in my opinion, was the duet with cleopatra, The Best That Love Can Be. I know people will disagree with me here, and i'm surprised myself that i like this song, but i think it is a very lovely song, with very nice singing for both performers.
If you're thinking of buying this CD, download the best that love can be off the internet, and forget the rest. It's really not worth it, unless you want a classic example of how not to sing opera.

1 out of 5 stars "Reprise" is no Prize.......2004-11-05

A very poor CD both in choice of music and voice quality. Mr. Watson's voice sounds strained and tired in many of the songs. I was very disappointed and sorry that I purchased "Reprise".

3 out of 5 stars Better than the second time around.......2004-10-06

Russell Watson and his hyper publicity machine have returned to bless or curse us once again with both pop and operatic selections, over orchestrated and over-hyped as always.

I bought this CD knowing full well what to expect because I have the first 2 and had absolutely no reason to buy this other than to see how Watson would fare against a spinto aria like Canio's lament in "Vesti La Giubba".
I didn't expect it to go that well and I wasn't disappointed.
Seems this guy's voice is starting to sound stranger with each release....not bad mind you, just well...not good in an operatic context either.

Anyhow, I liked this CD much better than his sophmore CD "Encore".
The song selection is well balanced between arias, neapolitan favs and the usual fare of Euro-pop.
I even like some of his Euro-pop stuff like "In the living years".

The main reason I couldn't bring myself to give this a 4 star rating, though tempted, was because of the odd sounding vocalizations on the operatic arias. His voice seems like it's tired or pushed...I can't place it but it has me wondering why this kid doesn't take some time off, buy himself a top-notch coach / teacher, fix his vocal problems and come back better than ever. While he's at it he should really go live in Italy for a year and get a grasp of the language. One would think that over the span of 3 CD's his Italian would be near perfect by now but that's not the case....thus 3 stars.

Being a tenor myself I respect his talent, but I also believe that singing operatic selections is a touchy deal and can hurt an artist as much or more if not done right, as it can help.
I'm glad that Russell's label continues to promote his career as well as it does but I hope that the self-proclaimed "people's tenor" will give the people a finished product, vocally, in his next release.

All in all this could be called "The Voice" part 3 because the formula hasn't changed and it seems to be quite profitable to both Decca and Watson so I don't expect things to change too much in the years to come. Love him or hate him...he'll be back.

1 out of 5 stars Terrifyingly bad.......2004-07-09

The worst singing I've ever heard is embodied in this recording. Russell Watson just don't have the voice and emotional intensity for almost all the music that he has chosen to sing. The result is hoarse vocalism and uninvolving performances.

A thoroughly bad recording.

Dowland's lute works are among the most beautiful compositions of the Renaissance period. Because so many of his pieces are wistful and sad, he was known as "the melancholy Dowland," although McFarlane's selection offers a fair number of more cheerful pieces. These performances are extremely stylish, alert and expressive in every moment of the music. Paul O'Dette's Dowland recordings for Harmonia Mundi are also very well played and include all of the composer's music on five discs. For a single-disc introduction to the composer, this Dorian CD is ideal. Dowland fanatics will need O'Dette's series, and perhaps McFarlane's also. Dorian's sound is extremely realistic. --Leslie Gerber

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb single volume collection of John Dowland's lute music.......2005-12-15

I first heard John Dowland's lute music many years ago as a classical guitar student, thought it, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and the Spanish repertoire the cream of the music for the guitar - and still feel mostly that way. But it was awhile before I was able to find recordings of Dowland's music.

Ronn McFarlane's "Lute Music of Dowland" is a wonderful introduction to John Dowland's lute music. His playing is delightful, the digital recording itself captures his lute beautifully, and the CD offers 28 Dowland compositions, a number well known, some not, all performed stylishly in a way that captures your attention from the very beginning, to the end, of the CD.

Dowland's music represents the very peak of Elizabethan lute music in late sixteenth centry England, a period which began with lutenist John Johnson, and whose music spread in popularity across Europe.

There is an unmistakable melancholy quality about Dowland's music, but it also contains numerous memorable pieces, such as Sir John Smith's Almaine, My Lady Hudson's Puffe, The Earl of Essex Galliard, Melancholy Galliard, Queen Elizabeth's Galliard, Lachrimae, The Frog Galliard etc,; some extraordinary passagework, and appeal that very much transcends time.

Ronn McFarlane's Dowland CD on the Dorian label, along with Jakob Lindberg's Dowland CD on BIS, are the two best single CD collections I know of Dowland's lute music, apart from Paul O'Dette's five volume collection of Dowland which the serious or compleat Dowland collector might prefer. (Julian Bream also offers Dowland on his lute recital CDs, but these include other composers.)

    Strongly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2002-10-22

This one's a winner. The music of Dowland is eternal. The lute playing and recording here is peerless. The Amazon review is right on. I'm not such a lute fan, but I return to this CD often. I want more from lutenist Ronn McFarlane! Bravo to all involved here.

4 out of 5 stars El Espíritu del Renacimiento.......2001-05-25

¡Bienvenidos!
