4 out of 5 stars A Dose of Heavy Psych.......2007-05-28

Fairly solid compilation . Mostly unknown artists with the exception of Boston Tea Partie's hit track. Could do without the last 5 tracks being the appalling Firebirds. Worth a buy for collectors.

5 out of 5 stars The best kind of psychedelia!.......2006-10-28

Arf! Arf! Records are a small but high-quality company. Their reissue compilations of obscure '60s psych/garage material are always well-researched and of the highest possible sound quality (nearly all the songs are transferred from the impossible-to-find vinyl singles). An Overdose Of Heavy Psych is one of the best collections they've put together. Have you ever purchased a set of "unknown psychedelic music" only to find that the majority of the tracks are more flower-pop and/or generic garage rock than psych? That isn't the case here. When Arf! Arf! says "HEAVY PSYCH," they mean it. You won't find any sitars and tablas or "la-la-la-I'm-high-and-everything's-beautiful" lyrics on this disc (the companion volume, A Heavy Dose Of Lite Psych--also outstanding, but a different kind of psych--is closer to that sort of thing). Yes, this is garage rock, but it is anything but a wanna-be-Nuggets set. This collection, in my opinion, shows American psychedelia in its purest sense: dark, moody songs drenched in electric organ, guitars fuzzed to the extreme, ghostly sound effects, and the vocalist sounding as if he is singing from the bottom of a well. Garage/psych aficionado Erik Lindgren also does a fine job of providing informative liner notes for each individual song. There are only 5 or 6 problems with this CD, those being the last six tracks, which are more in the acid rock/Hendrix-influenced vein and do not fit in well with the rest of the content. However, songs like Orange Wedge's frantic "From The Womb To The Tomb," Powered By Love's deranged theme song, Kiriae Crucible's creepy "Salem Witch Trial," and, of course, Glass Sun's incomparable, hard-rocking "Silence Of The Morning" more than make up for the final twenty-odd minutes.
Many thanks to Erik Lindgren and the rest at Arf! Arf!, without whom most of us would never get a chance to hear any of these fantastic lost gems. If it's pure psychedelia you're looking for, your search is over. Wrap your head around this, and then seek out the other three discs in the "Dose" series, as well as 30 Seconds Before The Calico Wall, also from Arf! Arf!

5 out of 5 stars Silence of the Morning-The Glass Sun.......2006-07-17

If you like the Silence of the morning tune on this album, check out myspace.com/theglasssun. A new cd for the group will be released shortly as of August 1st 2006, yup its freakin incredable!

5 out of 5 stars reeeally goode.......2003-09-18

i agree with the other reviewers that the last couple trax are relatively lame (doom metal fans might like them alright). track 19 - "silence of the morning" - more than makes up for it. if you like this type of stuff, buy it - if you dont, but you have money to burn, buy it if for no other reason than track 19. freekin incredible.

4 out of 5 stars Overdose.......2002-10-30

I agee with the previous reviewer. Great tracks can be found here, but the last six by the Firebirds are just awful.

4 out of 5 stars Very Tribal/Sepultura/thrash - good stuff.......2005-01-28

This was one of my favorite bands for a while - and is well worth spending your money on. The sound is unique...but still very much brazillian sounding - maybe a cousin of Sepultura, only more groove to it. It's not too speedy, but the chugging guitars and vocals are awesome. The lyrics are pretty powerful too if you're into that. If you did old school thrash, check these guys out. In the vein of SOD, Anthrax, Nailbomb...etc.

4 out of 5 stars Brazilian thrash metal.......2003-07-03

Very much Sepultura in a crowded garage. Still raging enough to bang your head to and well worth the first few listens. Will not stand the test of time in your collection if you claim any taste in metal... A thrill for pre-Roots era Sepultura fans.

2 out of 5 stars If you have an Overdose d'Amore, call a doctor immediately!.......2007-05-28

The concept of an Italian blues singer sounds intriguing. Why not? Genre-blending and crossover are incredibly popular, especially in world music. One can enjoy a spicy mix of Algerian rai and Jamaican reggae with Cheb Mami and Ziggy Marley's "Madanite", and cringe when listening to the blend of Afropop/Latin rock/classical crossover with Angelique Kidjo, Josh Groban and Carlos Santana's "Pearls."

Zucchero's "Overdose d'Amore" is sappy enough to warrant a doctor's prescription. One would need a shot of insulin to get one's sugar levels regularized. "Diamante", the opening track,is archetypal easy listening, perfect for the dentist's office. "Va Pensiero" has Zucchero sounding like a moaning, bad Italian John Denver. The third song sounds like an ode to gnocchi (it is about herbs and spices. Would you like Parmesan with that?) In "Cosi Celeste",the talented Cheb Mami is relegated to the sidelines as Zucchero's groaning "She's my baby" is his attempt to be a blues man. "Muoio para te" is bombastic, and Sting is swept into it. Finally, there are "Blue" and "Miserere",overblown, bombastic songs composed by U2's front man, Bono. "Blue" is a pseudo-blues song&is a waste of Sheryl Crow's talents. She is better off singing her own songs. "Miserere" IS misery,as the title says,in its odd combination of the Latin Mass and Italian blues.

If you have an Overdose d'Amore, take a few aspirins, drink plenty of water and hot tea, and call the doctor in the morning.

5 out of 5 stars Flying High w. Zucchero.......2006-05-31

This is my favorite Zucchero CD: I have 4. I only wish he would produce more new material of this incredibly enjoyable quality! Other albums are less accessible and some repeat songs found here. This one is your best bet if you want an introduction to Zucchero. Bought this to friends ages 50 something and 20 something, female,
who immediately fell in love with it. We played it everyday for 4 days. I came back a month later and they were still playing it every day! It's just that good. In my drawing classroom it was also THE favorite requested play of the year (18 year olds) It makes your soul fly.

5 out of 5 stars Music to uplift your soul and transport your mind.......2003-02-23

I'm not in the habit of writing reviews but where this album is concerned, I'm compelled. I bought this album in November 2002 and am addicted to it. 'Diamante' which begins the album, will transport you to a place of serenity. I first encountered Zucchero's haunting voice in 1996 on "Pavarotti and friends for War Child". I've been hooked ever since. I play the album almost daily and it always leaves me yearning for more. Some may say it's music to make love by; I would say it's also music to LIVE by!!!

5 out of 5 stars Zucchero-overdose d'amore.......2002-09-23

as with all of Zucchero's CD's, this is also wonderful. I listen to it all the time, it's sensual and sexy and great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent a beatiful CD.......2002-03-24

This is a very nice CD, I just got it recently and I play it over and over again last night. I love it, It is filled with Beautiful songs. The Song Diamante is fantastic, a great start to this CD. The Duets are very very good; Blue with Sheryl Crow, Mi Muoio Per Te with Sting and of course Miserere With Luciano Pavarotti. All the songs on this CD are great.

4 out of 5 stars "PARADISE IN DISGUISE, SHOUT THE TRUTH, WHISPER LIES...".......2007-04-25

Usually, when I'm on Amazon, I click around in an endless pursuit of hungry artists clawing their way up in the hard rock and heavy metal genres. But lately I've been attempting to expand my sonic horizons by including alot of dance music in my CD collection, particularly albums that do not fall in the staleness of electriconica, house, or mechanized club pop. "Massive Luxury Overdose," the 1992 work by Sweden's Army of Lovers, is the first piece of material I've ever heard by the group, and it's a real guilty pleasure for me. With it's sly and opulent combination of old school sax-and-trumpet-techno beats, mock opera chorus hooks, and somewhat bizzare poetry lyrics (often badly sung or rapped by Jean-Pierre Barda, Alexander Bard and former member La Camilla), this is a record that encourages all listeners not to take it too seriously. I can best describe "Massive Luxury" as an offering of synthesized sugar-coated drag queen disco, both easily digestible and hard to resist. I also enjoy some of the hidden topics the group meticulously stitched into the lyrics: with a white, sparkling grin, the Army jokingly makes references to the ridiculous ideals of religion ("Crucified" and "Say Goodbye to Babylon"), materialism ("Candyman Messiah"), capitalism ("We Stand United"), unhealthy relationships ("Obsession" and "Someone Somewhere"), and the popularity of science fiction celluloid ("Dynasty of the Planet Chromada"). The first time I actually heard of Army of Lovers in general was through the track "Walking with a Zombie," which my husband and I downloaded and burned onto our own Halloween fright compilation. I humbly recommend "Massive Luxury" to anyone sick and tired of gyrating to the same radio tunes over and over again, or at least to any boombox-carrier attending the latest family barbecue. ;)

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2004-04-06

Even though I have not heard Obsession for ten years I still know every word.
Warning this album will turn you into a dancing queen and you will never forget the lyrics until you die.

5 out of 5 stars More Multi-themed techno-pop from Swedish Army of Lovers.......2004-03-06

Massive Luxury Overdose goes beyond its predecessor in incorporating more joint vocals among the trio, now consisting of Alexander Bard (vocals/computers), Jean-Pierre Barda (vocals/drums), and Michelle De La Cour, simply known as De La Cour (vocals/keyboards). La Camilla was fired from the group although she has some guest vocals here. More of the choir chorus introduced in the first album is emphasized, as well as the religious, sci-fi, and scientific motifs on their bubble-techno songs.

"Dynasty Of Planet Chromada" is about some beings from outer space who are self-styled heroes, like those at Masada, who seeing the Earth in the throes of apocalypse, seek to restore it under their rule.

The technofied, choir-vocal-oriented "Crucified" was one of the last songs I heard on the college radio station back in my NMSU days, and I spent a year or two trying to figure out who it was. Although it's Barda on vocals, the regular backing vocalists whose combined vocals make it an operatic choir add much to the religious aura of this song, whose protagonist is a very devoted acolyte to some god: "I'm crucified/crucified like my saviour/saintlike behaviour/a lifetime I prayed."

"Candyman Messiah" is a moody drum machine and synth number with the main trio singing, with guest monologue by La Camilla. She has the same role in "Obsession" set to Alexander Bard's lead vocals. This number has a few airy synths permeating. A monologue by Bard sums up something I went through: "There ain't no promises/ain't no commitments/but how cruel love can be/how cruel can a broken heart like mine/there ain't no right/there ain't no wrong/but as long as hope survives/I'll stay alive."

"We Stand United," with the backing choir, is a bouncy Stock-Aitken-Waterman type number, although their lust in material dreams might be a turnoff: "gold bars are a must/in money we trust." The string-synth laden "Say Goodbye To Babylon" is a hymn to a city's that's fallen under so many invasions, with references to Nebuchadnezzar, the Hanging Gardens, the mysterious signs that Daniel translated the eve of the city's fall to the Persians, and Xerxes' conquest of the city. The choir is present in the chorus.

Chemistry students will get the goofy techno "The Particle Song," speaking of accelerated particles flying through cyclotrons, starring particle y and z as "macho men of the molecules," and "atoms in disguise dressed like electrons." Like "Crucified," the choir is dominant here. A very silly song and a favourite.

The whispered desires of a certain Louis for power are intercut with soulful guest vocalist Annette on "I Cross The Rubicon," in this reference to how Julius Caesar made the decision to march to Rome and get his empire.

"Flying High" is a Stock-Aitken-Waterman-type number fit for Kylie or Rick Astley about a pilot and passengers who are flying high, but they crash and end up flying high, with angels taking them away to Eden to play.

Annette has guest vocals again on "Walking With A Zombie" with a silly chorus: "I'm walking with a zombie/with seaweed in my hair/I'm walking with a zombie/through radioactive air." The mock African rapped in a monstrous whisper, that includes pinupa and bazooka, are definitely musical kitsch.

When singing of "Judgment Day," the protagonist sees it as nothing more than getting revenge on someone who left him. Barda sings the chorus, followed by back-to-back monologues by De La Cour and Barda, and etc. The backing choir that sings at the end adds to the finality of that day, and they, along with more engaging songs and rhythms, make this higher than their debut.

5 out of 5 stars What is this!!?? Whoa!.......2003-01-30

Imagine a decadent blend of ABBA...Nina Hagen...B-52's...and Queen. Put all in a big blender. MIX MIX MIX. Add copius amounts of weird, mythological sci-fi references, androgynous undertones with BPM ethics.Interested? Unbelievable!!

5 out of 5 stars Sounds Good in the Crib, Car, Club, Wherever.......2002-12-16

Ha, and to think, the first time I heard Army of Lovers was on Beavis and Butthead as they reviewed the "Crucified" video...what can say, it's deliciously great fun, listen to the cd on a Tuesday night and dance around your living room like it's the weekend.

4 out of 5 stars For the ones looking for a different type of Thrash..........1999-03-06

This Brazilian Band is amazing. The sound is all tied together. The vocals are heavy as well as the guitars. The Drums and percussion are trully the state of the art of something new. The lyrics are violent and, in the first song, you can listen to some portuguese!!! It is really a album that all thrash-metal lovers should have in thier collection. Téio.

    5 out of 5 stars Best P5 Album.......2006-05-12

This is the best P5 album and I've got them all. It's sort of midway between the jazzed out anti-hyper electronica of the earlier stuff (Soft Landing on the Moon, By Her Majesty's Request...), and the Madonna'd out hyper-pop of the Matador releases (Made in USA, Playboy Playgirl...) It's really great electronicpop simultaneously laden with catchiferous melodies and funktiferous grooves. Here we also begin to hear less of Yasuharu's voice and more of Maki, which is nice because Maki has a great voice and Yasuharu is a dude. Imagine Herbie Hancock and Lionel Richie teaming up - that is what P5 would be like without Maki, so it's great to hear more of her. The closest album in sound to this one is Romantique '96, so if you like Romantique, Overdose is low risk. Most of the lyrics are in Japanese. Unfortunately, I don't think this was released in the US, so you will have to pay import prices. Buy it used. Plus it's worth having the album art, which is pretty cool, so better to buy a physical disc than download. Although the Romantique album art is by far the best of all the P5 albums - get that one too.

      Album Description

Eighteen months after the release of their successful No Time For Silence album, the German Alternative Chart invaders do it again with their third album, aptly titled, Heading For Tomorrow. It features Sero.Overdose's signature sound, characterized by catchy alluring male vocals, highly melodic synth-pop lines and modern EBM beats. It also reveals a more dancefloor frontal approach, perfectly illustrated by their new club hits "Fire", "Tears In Rain" and "Wut". Andre Hartung sings about lost passions and longing for better days. His sensual voice once again benefits from Mike Johnson's top-notch production skills who brilliantly manages to combine ear-catching clear minimal melodies with Sero.Overdose's overall body/pop sound while giving the entire production a futuristic twist. This is melodic body of music with which you can sing along with and dance until you're exhausted! The edgy synth pop tunes of Heading For Tomorrow will surely please fans of Covenant, De/Vision along with And One. Whilst German songs like "Wut" and the very emotional "Du" will conquer the hearts of followers of acts like Wolfsheim and Melotron! Let us all head for tomorrow!
