The birth of the Phalanx.......2002-04-12
I was happy to work on it and happy to get it out, but learned quickly the importance of putting out quality product no matter how much time you have to put into it. So as a building block, I look back at the mistakes we made on PromoMix I, and eradicated those with the sounds of PromoMix II .
The biggest problem with PromoMix I is the lack of continuity on it and the missing element of a team. With other label-released compilations (No Limit, Cash Money, Def Jam), there is a constant type of sound or style, or you at least get the idea that the artists are representing the same thing. That wasn't us on PromoMix I. It was about getting some music done, and getting it out.
Beyond a continuous content level, there are a few nice cuts on here. The mellow fun on the mic style from M2S shows hip-hop in a good bouncin' fashion. Tracks "Much 2 Smoove" and "No More Clones" get you movin' in your seats. The battling rhymes of Team Chaos belittle any close competition with witty uses of metaphors and the grimiest of tracks. "Chaotic Assassins" and "Insidious 6icks" give you the feeling that you've stepping into an alternate dimension. The hardcore street lyrics of Mic-T keep that ear to the street and give you the aura of what the average street head in the city of Flint would be talking about given a mic and a good beat. "Let 'Em Have It" gives a nice underlying sound to Mic-T's playful voice. Newcomer Liquid Shadow shows a lot of promise on "Watch Out" and you can tell that with a little bit more practice, that he'll be kickin' some head noddin' rhymes for you the groove to.
The intent of this album was definitely to get music pressed up and out so people could know the "Phalanx" name. There were a few lyrical and engineering difficulties that would have given it another star in my opinion. I was happy with the release, but knew it could have been way better. Things have changed around with The Phalanx crew now, and there's more concentration on being an entire crew instead of a bunch of sub-crews.
The new sound of The Phalanx has grown way past that of PromoMix I. Check out the sounds of PromoMix II and the full Phalanx LP Release, Corporate Raid...
