5 out of 5 stars One of the best CD's out there!.......2007-05-10

All ages and musical backgrounds love this CD. The Baltimore Consort are amazing. One really feels one is in a smoky pub in the 14oo's getting plastered with England's best musicians! Don't miss "Pox on You;" my kids absolutely howl with glee at the "bass fartophone." I haven't heard laughter like that come out of my little boy since he was a toddler. "Sweet Sir Walter" features one of the guys singing in a falsetto that sweeps lustily down into a Tim Curry-esque (think Dr. Frank-n-furter)gutteral guffaw of delight. So outrageously fun one forgets one is listening to Renaissance madrigals.

These bawdy catches and ballads take us on a journey to the taverns and other social gathering places of the the real 'Merry Old England'. Some of us may be mildly shocked by the directness and earthiness of the text, but everyday life in the 17th century was much more 'down-to'earth- and forward. These texts-some blatant and other euphemistic-fully explore the spectrum of humor from the sly smirk to the back-slapping guffaw.
The singing of both ballads and catches belongs to a long and venerable tradition in England. The natural habitat of the of the catch was the tavern, while the ballad was known in a wider variety of social settings as well as the stage. By the end of the 17th century, ballads were collected by connoisseurs of popular culture and published in anthologies. The main source for this recording, 'The Catch Club, or 'Merry Companions', was printed in 1762.
A quote from the catch-philosopher (of 'Come, come let us drink') is offered by the Baltimore Consort: "...wine and good cheer will in spite of our fear inspire our hearts with mirth..the time we live, to wine let us give, since we all must turn to earth...."
This is an excellent collection of songs; quite interesting and varied. The instruments are played skillfully, and the voices, for the most part, are good quality. However, as with all 'folk-like' songs, the diction is not always clear, and that is very true of several of these on this disc. The female voices were more difficult to comprehend much of the time. The text is printed out, so ultimately familiararity will make them easier to understand. I do like the disc, and think that it needed to be done.As to a previous criticism concerning the fact that it wasn't 'true' barroom singing. Of course, it's not!!!If it were, you would not understand any of it!!!!!Enough said.

The Baltimore Consort, an ensemble of six players, was founded in 1980 with the purpose of performing 'broken consort' pieces of Elizabethan origin. 'Broken' here refers to the instrumentation - treble viol/violin, flue/recorder, lute, cittern, bandore and bass viol. Their repertoire expanded beyond these beginnings to include broader British fare, as well as French and Italian music of the time. This is a happy expansion, as it made this disc of older, bawdy (for its time) music possible.

The Baltimore Consort play with life and vigour, with a good deal of improvisational flair, not being bound to texts and going through the production of notes as if mechanically. This is true to the spirit and nature of the early music, in which performers often had to 'play by ear', neither being able to read music nor having printed music even if they could. This is particularly true of the songs on this disc, where many are derivative of anonymous jokes and stories, and much of the music is likewise folk-tune and anonymously composed.

Some of the songs can be rather shocking. As Mary Anne Ballard writes in the accompanying notes, 'We must remember that in the days before indoor plumbing and pooper-scooper laws, everyday life was of an earthier flavour than it is today.... The men of the singing clubs and the ladies of stage poked fun at themselves and their companions with wit, pleasantry and contrivance.'

The names of many of the composers of these pieces have been lost to history, particularly the more folk-song oriented ones. However, some well-known composers are represented among the pieces here - Purcell, D'Urfey, Aldridge, and others.

The regular players include Mary Anne Ballard (viols), Mark Cudek (cittern, guitar, recorder and bass viol), Custer LaRue (vocalist/soprano), Larry Lipkis (recorder, viols), Ronn McFarlane (lute), Chris Norman (flutes), Webb Wiggins (tambourine and 'virginals'). Some artists are known from other Dorian productions, such as Ronn McFarlane on the lute in the collection 'Greensleeves'.

Added to the regular consort players are the Merry Companions, including Peter Becker (baritone), Alexander Blachly (baritone), Paul Shipper (bass, belch-canto), and James Weaver (baritone).

One more addition includes a guest artist, Lorenzo Labbrobacio, playing of all things, the 'fartophone', a rather mysterious instrument indeed. Labbrobacio defies identification on the internet other than references to this disc, and so the mystery deepens.

This is music that is interesting, truly fun to listen to, entertaining and has a quality about it that makes it a joy both in musical and humourous tones.

2 out of 5 stars Sounds like they're singing Christmas carols.......2004-11-09

This recording is professionally produced - perhaps too much so. I've been in a few taverns and heard my share of bawdy songs. I am used to hearing them sung with gusto, with a wink and a naughty smile, to the raucous and enthusiastic appreciation of the audience. The songs on this CD are performed entirely straight. The results are technically competent but fail utterly in conveying the spirit and fun that make this genre worth listening to.

4 out of 5 stars A sly and rollicksome good time!.......2002-11-29

On this recording, the Baltimore Consort and the Merry Companions are full of fun, both blatant and tongue-in-cheek. Soprano Custer La Rue and the instrumentalists of the Consort are joined by a quartet of classical male singers (Peter Becker, Alexander Blachly, Paul Shipper and James Weaver) with quite a theatrical sense of humor. The two groups take turns presenting ribald tavern songs of merry old England, interspersed by light, catchy instrumentals listed in the credits as the "Prelewd", the "Interlewd" and a "Fresh Ayre". Drinking, sex and other bodily functions are both celebrated and ridiculed in songs that are cleverly worded and enthusiastically sung, and in at least one case, accompanied by a mysterious instrument (reminiscent of P.D.Q. Bach) called a "fartophone". Especially amusing are the "catches" or rounds, and the new meanings that result from the staggering of words when several different verses are all sung together. It sounds silly, and is silly, but that's the point of it all--celebrating the "earthier flavor" of life 17th and 18th century England. My copy came with a parental advisory sticker stuck fast to the case, but my mother didn't seem overly concerned, and in fact enjoyed it too when I played it for her! For more fun Renaissance vocals, both salacious and serious, try "All At Once Well Met: English Madrigals" by the King's Singers, and "The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour: Italy, England, France, Spain, Germany" by the King's Singers and the Consort of Musicke.

4 out of 5 stars 1,2,3,4,5,Six Six Six!.......2003-11-29

It's hard to say what the most bizarre thing about the Broken Family Band is. Perhaps it's the fact that they play such old time country music in 2003. Perhaps it's the fact they are so blatantly "for real" and "for yucks" at the same time. Most of all it's probably the fact they're from the grim plains of Cambridge, England - a place as far removed from Nashville and the usual homes of Americana/country music that you could imagine.
None of these absurdities makes "Cold Water Songs" any worse though. It's a fantastic, authentic burn through all the clichés that drive old-time country music with a passionate reverence for the sounds and structures, and a healthy irreverence toward the norms. Some may say they're dragging country into the 21st century, some may say they're as real as "The Darkness", few could deny they're writing some great tunes and having a great time while they're at whatever the hell it is they're at!
The strength of the album definitely lies in the opening tracks "(I don't have the time to) Mess Around", "Twelve Eyes of Evil" and "Devil in the Details". After this the album does drag slightly and the Americana wears a tad thin, stretching the bands knowledge of the genre to its limits, and some later songs slip into a more rock or indie vein. However passionate delivery and atmospheric feel of the closing track "Hitting Women" squarely re-establishes the country vibe and makes you forget the lull in the middle.
My favorite track here though is buried in the middle of the album - "Don't Leave That Woman Unattended" is a joyful romp that showcases that band's many talents, with harmonies and multi-instrumentation galore, producing a song that sounds like it just missed the cut for the Coen Brothers' film "O Brother Where are Thou?". If you loved that film you'll love this. With a black sense of humor and an ear for old-tyme country, these guys deserve to inherit the throne that Johnny Cash has so sadly just vacated.

5 out of 5 stars I haven't heard anyting like it.......2003-09-11

Well, after Rich1million's review I cant promise i can add anything of any worth, but all i'll say is: SIMPLY BUY IT!!!!
There is all the emotions here: love, trust, anger, belief and joy - all twirled round in guitars that lift your heart into space and then...WHOOSH!!!
Yeah, its all here, and you can here that in between the words there is real heart-feelings punishing the bearer into making a song about it...for us!
If the packaging isn't enough to sweep you into this cunning trio's warnth then the music must surely be the one to get you going!
I here their shows are explosive and full of good reviews, so I'll be going to see them next time.
MAYBE SEE YOU THERE!!!
GO GUYS!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome debut.......2003-08-28

I never know how to categorise music these days and its been years since I stopped reading the NME. Other people claim The Broken Family Band are alt-country-indie-rock. Fine if that helps you! All I know is that if you're into the likes of the Violent Femmes, Will Oldham and Pavement (amongst others) you'll love these guys too.

So what about Cold Water Songs? Well most tracks will make you feel happy, and you'll be humming and foot tapping in no time. Some will make you feel sad and you'll wonder why. A few will make you laugh out loud. And just when you thought you've heard all they have to offer, they let rip with a couple of great rock songs.

The range of music they play is inspiring really, and it all fits together perfectly due to the singer's very distinctive style and genuine lyrical wit. The guitars sound so totally at ease with gentle tear jerking chord riffs, complicated Spanish sounding solos, and the odd shred, its hard to believe its the same guy playing throughout. Drumming is solid, right from the first song kicking in (after the gentle intro) to the softly, softly brush styles later on. The bass work is also excellent (reminds me a little of Mike Watt in places) and very melodic (besides, I used to play bass and I know good bass!). Pedal steel, trumpets and organs turn up occasionally too and they enrich the songs nicely.

The Broken Family Band are a brilliant band to see live. Apart from the excellent songmanship they always create a friendly, feel-good atmosphere. This comes across on the CD to some extent which is definitely a bonus.

So to finish - I recommend that you buy this album. There, I've said it now!

For those of us who are willing to listen to music far from popular tastes , this is a lovely cd. This could be likened to a christmas card in sound. All the songs have an indescribable charm and brings to mind images of how christmases must have been far from our concrete canyons in the beautiful alpine countryside. It is a shame that so few copies are available but if you are wondering whether to buy it, by all means do try to buy it.

There is so much good about this album that it is hard to quanify in just one small review. This album perfects the sound sought by other Brit Pop "Shoe Gazer" bands in the mid '90's. Bands such as Ride, Verve, and Spiritualized. Using overlapping guitar tracks and soft vocals, Revolver creates a classic in the track "Shakesdown", building from bass and drums to the full band with Orchestra a'la "Stairway to Heaven" in just one example. This album is a must for the serious Brit Pop collector, especially if you like more conteporary "Shoe Gazers" such as Radiohead, Coldplay, or Elbow. Buy it and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars MUSIC WITHOUT SAUERKRAUT.......2005-05-28

I feel that it's worth calling attention to this disc for the sake of the part of it (roughly two-thirds) that I actually know. The selection that Peter Lawson performs is still available here and there to determined collectors on a disc of its own, but a reissue is more than welcome, particularly with this set filled out to reasonable length for a cd.

Peter Lawson is now 55. He originally recorded these pieces in London's Wigmore Hall in 1979, the recording engineer being the formidable Mr Bear. For reasons of health as well as personal temperament Peter has not elected to follow the international virtuoso circuit, which he would have graced in a major way had he so chosen. He is an enthusiastic proponent of certain modern composers, many of whom make greater calls than does Satie on the virtuoso technique that he possesses in abundance, but if you like Satie I can only suppose that you will enjoy this recital greatly. Satie was a bit of a sad figure, hopelessly inept at any kind of interpersonal relations, and comporting himself in a ridiculous way when he could not hide from human contact entirely. This side of him shows through in a number of the titles he gives to the pieces here that are simply buffoonery. Others of these titles, it seems to me, can be taken quite seriously - the trois gymnopedies are slow and grave in expression, not unlike Debussy's Danseuses de Delphes in some ways. With others again I simply don't know. `Medusa' in Greek just means `princess', for instance. It doesn't have to refer to the sorceress who turned beholders to stone, but I don't suppose Satie knew that. That is who he is likely referring to, but what possible relationship the name has to the music I have no idea - probably indeed none.

Give or take the titles of the pieces, there is no buffoonery in the music itself. Some of it has a light and ironic feel (not uncommon in French music of any era), but it does not aim to be `witty' or `amusing' music in the later manner of Poulenc or Francaix, and for that relief much thanks say I. These pieces are polished and thoroughly artistic miniatures that grace the art of music and do not diminish it. The harmonic idiom is basically tonal, though with some suggestions of Debussy at times. What it is above all is unmistakably French music. The composer remarked to Debussy that they needed to have their own music `without Sauerkraut'. What Peter Lawson conveys with particular beauty and sensitivity is its delicate Frenchness, less robust and much more fragile than the music of Faure, Debussy or Ravel.

It would of course be a great weight on my conscience if the other contributions to the disc were seriously unsatisfactory, or if the recorded quality had plummeted for some strange reason. These possibilities seem to me remote to vanishing, and I remain confident that I'm showing more public-spiritedness than if I held my tongue about the part of this record that I am familiar with. Peter Lawson's work is not entirely unknown to the musical public, and in particular there is a notable disc from him of modern American piano sonatas as well as some more out-of-the-way material. Admirers of Satie, and any who are simply curious about him, can surely be recommended this disc with absolute confidence.

    5 out of 5 stars Lovely music!.......2001-12-18

These CDs are for lovers of Irish music and of the "old-timey" sound of John McCormack. The songs themselves are lovely, and James Flannery sings them exactly as they need to be sung... in a simple and straightforward manner. The music is evocative of the sound and spirit of a long-ago time. The accompanying book gives interesting background information about Thomas Moore and also about the songs. Good listening for a rainy day or a snowy night with the fire blazing.

While laying down some beautiful instrumentals "Cold Water Music" keeps the beat alive with work from some talented rap MCs and a beautiful track featuring Kate Rogers. This is a record worth listening to and one I wholefully enjoy.

      4 out of 5 stars True Sound.......2003-03-05

This music is fantastic. Perfect for putting on and sitting back, but upbeat enough not to put you to sleep.
Before you know it, you'll be enveloped in the groove and ignoring everything around you.

5 out of 5 stars Worth your money........2000-06-21

I heard this CD played in a restaurant/club in Prague a few weeks ago and had to ask who it was; I ate there three days later and they were kind enough to play it again for me. It's a very smooth album, something you'd want to play softly during a dinner party or loudly, speakers turned out the window, as you're lying in the backyard getting a tan. It's sort of R&B, sort of trippy, with great beats. The song "Sail" is also on HedKandi's Serve Chilled 2 compilation, which is another worthwhile buy. Looking forward to the release of this album, any day now.

5 out of 5 stars On a par with Shadow............2000-05-30

Yeah, my sentiments match those of the other reviewers ('cept for the last one) - excellent abstract hip hop. Smooth layers, flawless beats and busting bass; this is mellow intelligent hip hop at its best. The instrumentals are clean and deep, and the tracks with rapping still hold the attention, moving on and up. Manchester pushing it on - I was delighted with this purchase; I was actually recommended it from a discussion on the mo'wax website, and I thank the three plus people who raved about this album. It actually reminds me of the better tracks of the DJ Cam 'DJKicks' album. I can't recommend this highly enough....

Another truly great example from Grand Central Records. This album hasn't left my side for a month. Just an example to all you Yanks who think UK Hip-Hop doesnt exist, listen and learn.

Another great offering from Cold Blue Records. This collection of short pieces for clarinet and assorted instruments is the newest offering from Marty Walker, renowned champion of new music and collaborator on many of Cold Blue's recordings. Especially welcome here is a new recording of Daniel Lentz's "Song(s) of the Sirens," an exquisite older work whose premiere recording has been out-of-print for some time. While the pieces presented are well-crafted and certainly well-played, some seem a bit brief or slight on material. Still, a worthwile addition to the collection of any listener tired of standard contemporary fare.
