Brother Dave Gardner contains multitudes. For starters, this Southern comedian was also an ordained Baptist minister as well as being a drummer and a singer. Judging from this pair of albums from 1959 and 1960, his live shows were amazing performance pieces. His truly expansive routines included Shakespeare parodies, swinging musical passages, and funny digressions. There's also room here for cool-cat philosophizing, riffs on outer space, and preacherlike inflections. Brother Dave can spellbind the listener with his freewheeling rambles one minute and tell a riveting story the next. The routines feature countless hilarious voices and characters, not to mention jaw-dropping vocal sound effects. Incredible charisma and warmth imbue the entire CD. Brother Dave was an artist who was liable to draw from just about everything and anything and somehow make it all work. It's hard to imagine what '50s audiences made of this hipster from Tennessee. Country music legend Chet Atkins produced both of the original records. --Fred Cisterna
Customer Reviews:
One of a kind humorist from the 60's.......2007-05-12
It was gift for my Father. He saw Brother Dave in person several times years ago. Dad enjoyed the gift, for the old LP's he had were so scratched from wear, one could barely understand them. Brother Dave came along at a time when segregation was still in vogue and political correctness wasn't heard of. His stories might offend some, but there is no cursing and no one is a target of tastless humor.
Dave Gardner.......2007-04-11
Brother Dave is one of the best comedians ever. His humor is a little deep but is still the best. If you want good clean humor, this is the man to get.
Origins of "different" humor.......2007-01-16
Takes me back to the times my family spent listening to comedy that was, unknown to them, over the kid's heads.
Rejoice dear hearts / Kick thy own self.......2005-09-05
I was a fan of "Brother Dave", back when he was plying the clubs. I owned most, if not all of his "ROCA Alblims" that over time disappeared. I was happy to get these CD's and have enjoyed them greatly. I look forward to getting others that are available. His humor, imagination, sense of reality and use of our language is not equaled by today's crop of comedians.
Rich in Southern Humor, this CLASSIC is Timeless!.......2004-01-11
Having not heard a Brother Dave recording in many, many years, I was delighted to run across this CD. WOW!!! Amazingly STILL FUNNY, this guy was truly an original. His rich southern humor was on the cutting edge in the late 50's, yet it remains timeless. Had me actually laughing out loud. The characters he created, the weird sounds he made, the "think about it" jokes should tickle most everyone's funny bone...even if they "ain't from the south"!

Customer Reviews:
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Album Description
MSI's music is a hybrid of Atari driven electronics with a venomous splash of ADD punk rock. There are three different versions of this release: a 10 track explicit version with a video for "You'll Rebel To Anything", an 11 track clean version with a video of "Diabolical", and an 11 track extra heavy double vinyl version. The clean and vinyl formats have two entirely different bonus tracks and all three have their own individual artwork, so true collectors will think nothing of owning them all. "MSI are, to me, how punk rock should sound in the 21st century: abrasive, brilliant, and sounding like no one else"--Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly). "...one of the most creative and genre-swirling outfits on the scene"--Serj Tankian (System Of A Down).
Customer Reviews:
Explicit version is a great album but very poor and underhanded marketing!.......2006-03-15
**This review was originally made for the uncensored version, see my advice below for buying considerations**
I'll break this review in to three parts. First, the review of the album itself. Second, the review of the tactics used by MSI and Metropolis Records to sell this album. Lastly, my advice on getting everything that should have been included on one album.
1. The review of the album:
Simply put, if you like previous MSI albums, Babyland or stuff like Korn you'll eat this up. It's another top notch hybrid electronic, punk/metal, lofi quasi-hip hop, quasi-post-industrial genre-bending album. I suppose this would have fallen in to the label "coldwave" circa mid-90's post-industrial labeling. It's not exactly coldwave, not exactly anything other than the sum of its influences, which seem to be mainly hip-hop, post-industrial and punk/metal. The highlights of the album are definitely "Shut Me Up" and "Stupid MF", although there isn't really a weak track here. Another bonus is a positively weird cover of Rush's "Tom Sawyer". Be sure to put the CD in your computer as there is a video for "You'll Rebel To Anything" (it's a neat collage of old 50's propaganda footage mixed with weird cartoons, vintage stock film interspersed with just general weirdness.)
2. Commentary about questionable gouging of consumer by label/band:
There is absolutely no reason for there to be three different versions of this album except to rip off the consumer. Period. In an interview Jimmy Urine said they released a clean version for people who couldn't buy the album in places like Wal-Mart. Who cares about Wal-Mart? For someone so outspoken and inspired by punk, it bothers me that he'd cave to pressures to release an edited version of anything, let alone an entire album. That leads me to believe it wasn't an effort to cater to the imbeciles who buy music at Wal-Mart but rather a flimsy excuse to release a different version of the album, with different artwork and different bonus tracks.
When I used to buy a lot of electro/industrial (circa mid-90's) I remember this type of crap burning the hell out of me. I'd buy the import of a particular artist (say, someone like Haujobb) and then a year or so later a domestic version would come out with bonus tracks. And it'd cost LESS to boot! So all the "early adopters" and people on the cutting edge would get burned over and over. I can't tell you how many CDs I bought like that when I used to buy a lot of obscure electro/industrial music. It's a trick in order to separate you from your money, nothing more. If they cared only about exposing underground music to a new audience then they'd simply license the album and release it exactly as it was originally in Europe. But I digress.
3. My advice:
Buy the explicit version, then download the bonus tracks "La-Di Da-Di" (bonus track on vinyl) and "Mic Commander" (bonus track on clean version) off teh intarweb and say fsck you to Metropolis Records/MSI for forcing us to buy three versions of the same album in order to get two extra tracks, different artwork and a bonus video (the clean version of this album has a "bonus rehearsal video for 'Diabolical'"). Alternately, if you feel like giving MSI more of your hard-earned money, you can at least get the track "Mic Commander" on iTunes Music Store by itself.
In summation, MSI are a great band and if you like punk, electro-industrial, metal with electronic influences (Fear Factory), hip-hop, nu-metal, coldwave/aggro-industrial (Ministry) then you'll probably totally dig this album.
Also, check out Jhonen Vasquez's video for "Shut Me Up" on myspace (or just do a google search for it). The ex-Johnny the Homicidal Maniac/Squee/Invader Zim/etc. mastermind pulls off one of the funniest videos in a long time.
Buy this Crap (*don't support censorship only get unedited*).......2005-05-21
What do you get when you steal a bulldozer then hunt down the band Atari Teenage Riot (*put tape over their mouths*) and squash then into mush, you scoop that mush up and toss it in a pot, very satisfying indeed but you need something else and so you're off again, next you happen along the world invader music group GWAR, and maybe not exactly what you were looking for but you think "what the heck", they try to fight back with their giant swords and huge phalluses but you put (*tape over their mouths*) run them down with ease leaving nothing but alien slime, You shovel their mutant sludge remains into your giant pot with ATR's bloody mush and then you take that home stir it all together and cook it on high, you like it but it's missing something so you track down and stock Marilyn Manson and Eminem until you're ready to strike and then you (*put tape over their mouths*) cut off their penises and testicles then take them home and throw those into the giant pot of stew just too add flavor, so what do you get? I don't know either but I bet its gross, smells bad, and there's no way I'd eat it!
But anyways, I like this CD (*uncensored*).
Also check out the band Psychic TV who are about to release a new album. Psychic TV's lead singer Genesis P-Orridge was the one who started industrial music with one of his other bands in the 70s then created the rave scene in the 80s in England before being Exiled from that country because of his (anti-)cult Temple of Psychick Youth.
**ALSO EVERYONE** I recommend checking out and listening to www.airamericaradio.com to stay informed about what's going on and have a few laughs also animated political cartoonist www.markfiore.com because I think we free thinkers need to be aware of what the American Fascists liars in Our Government, who claim religious superiority, are up to today before they bring back the Inquisition or ban our lifestyles and force theirs on us.
totaly wacked.......2005-04-24
Censoring MSI I thought would really suck but the truth is it still sounds awesome and with more real lyrics in this cd not a hell of a lot is censored in the first place.
Different sound when censored.......2005-04-20
I got both the censored and uncensored versions, and actually to listen to them back to back, they have a different sound. Plus mic commander is a great track. It's really not worth it to buy both unless you are one of those people who had to have a copy of Tight for well over $60... Still if you aren't allowed to buy from anywhere except walmart, or you just need to hear the bonus track, this is a great cd.
Clean music can still be good!.......2005-04-19
Yeah, it kinda loses it's kick without the bad words, but it's still a great CD by one of the best bands out there. It's funny listening to them censor things that I didn't even know were obscenities. I was a little pissed at first with MSI for making me buy two albums just for one bonus track and one video, but the CDs were only 10 bucks each. You can get both for about the same cost as one crappy pop album of your choice.
And as for an actual review of the music, just look at the review of the un-cut version. It all applies, and the bonus track and video are great.

Album Description
The English composer, Benedict Mason, has been called "one of the major talents in music today" by the critic Julian Anderson. The three works recorded on this disc introduce the work of a startlingly original voice. Mason's music incorporates a huge range of expression- from commonplace to the sublime. Barriers between tonality and non-tonality are swept aside easily by the force of Mason's musical argument, his broadly inclusive vision calling to mind such visionaries as Janacek, Mahler and Ives. Indeed, ghosts of Beethoven, Stravinsky, Ives and even Elgar occasionally haunt the discourse of Mason's surreal landscape, projecting a brilliantly refractory sub-text, the music's surface always alive with humor and highly detailed invention. The virtuosic performances on this disc are ample testimony to the high esteem in which Benedict Mason is held by his English and German colleagues- members of three of Europe's leading contemporary ensembles.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoyably 'Inauthentic,' Authentically 1950s Version.......2005-05-14
By rights, this 1955 version of John Gay's much-adapted 1728 'ballad opera' should sound antiquated beyond redemption: the musical version used is Frederick Austin's well-worn, prettified (& verbally expurgated) 1920 arrangement, subjected to the indignity of being blown up from chamber ensemble to full orchestra; Sir Malcolm Sargeant's tempi are impossibly 'inauthentic' (ie. slow); there are numerous cuts even beyond Austin's omissions; & the 2 separate casts, of opera singers & actors, recorded in different months, are not always convincingly 'matched up.' Yet it's one of the most enjoyable recordings I know of.
A quick scan of the cast list(s) will tell you why: the singers include Elsie Morison, John Cameron, Monica Sinclair, Ian Wallace, Owen Brannigan & Alexander Young & the actors Zena Walker, John Neville, Rachel Roberts, Eric Porter & Paul Rogers. In other words, these are top pros & strong audio personalities who grab their every opportunity. The musical performance is sumptuous & sheer pleasure to listen to, the actors & dialogue 'production' brisk, funny & sharper than you might expect. And the sound for both music & dialogue is of demonstration quality, one of the best of the period.
Those who find this version too musically ponderous or dramatically reactionary can find antidotes in the Bare Baroque Basics one by Jeremy Barlow & The Broadside Band (Hyperion), word & note complete, & the radical & often inspired 1948 Benjamin Britten arrangement (complete on Argo, abridged with the original cast on Pearl). They'll be missing some good 50s fun, though.
They'll also be missing the only available excerpts (15 numbers) from Edward German's tuneful 1907 operetta 'Tom Jones.' This really IS 'cleaned up' 18th century, genteel beyond the call of duty, but for those who respond to musical theater of the period, highly recommended. The 1966 recording is lively & accomplished. As Miss Jean Brodie would say, For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like. And a good thing too.

Customer Reviews:
terry bozzio's chamber music.......2007-03-17
I think we can all agree (with the other reviewers) that this is not a rock album. If you have ever heard Frank Zappa's album Orchestral Favorites with Terry Bozzio on drums, this is kind of like Bozzio's follow-up to that. Bozzio's orchestral drumming is superb on both albums. Reccomended for fans of GOOD drumming and/or people who enjoyed Orchestral Favorites.
Bozzio Plays Chamber Music.......2005-10-05
Terry Bozzio isn't just a great drummer but a superb percussionist. If you want to hear a rock drummer don't buy this cd. I have listened to Terry through many of the groups he played with and have seen him with Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck and at a drum clinic. This cd reminds me of many of the Frank Zappa arrangements. If you want to hear Terry play drums & percussion similar to the Zappa years I think you will enjoy this cd. I think this cd will appeal to those who are more adventurous in their listening. Terry does a great job and this cd is different than his previous solo projects.
It's not for everyone..........2005-09-28
I actually have the older version of this you can get off Terry's website, but its the same thing. This is an interesting CD, but I have to agree with the other reviewer here who said it is long, drug out, and certainly not rock. The fact that it's not rock doesn't bother me in the least. This album is a bit boring and, as with Terry's other solo drum music albums, it tends to be far to frantic to listen to comfortably for any length of time. I can't imagine someone popping this in to entertain or relax with.
I would suggest, that if you want a Bozzio album you can listen to and hear some amazing drumwork, get Situation Dangerous or Black Light Syndrome by Bozzio, Levine, and Stevens. That way you also get to listen to Steve Steven's amazing guitar and Tony Levine's bass work.
A little out there.......2005-09-12
Renowned rock drummer meets established orchestra; the combination works on an eccentric level, but on a casual level, not so much. I'm sure that drum aficionados will appreciate Bozzio's unique approach to his drum work here, but the songs are so long and drawn out (and far from rock), that they tend to lose their appeal.
