This recording would appeal equally to reggae or jazz fans, and since I'm both, I couldn't be happier. The reggae fans will recognize many of the tunes, of course, but they should note that this is not a typical "dub" reggae album with lots of echo and drum & bass as the lead instruments. Jazz fans may be more familiar with Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander who gets equal solo time with Ranglin, but make no mistake, Ernest Ranglin is the star here. Ranglin is a dead ringer for Wes Montgomery with his octaves, and he pulls off single note runs on a par with Kenny Burrell or George Benson. In short, he has jazz chops in abundance, in addition to having a feel for Jamaican music as one of its founders and a key figure in its evolution from ska to rock steady to reggae. This record is a great vehicle for jazz fans to become familiar with reggae, and vice versa.

Every tune is outstanding and needs no commentary, but I'd like to add some observations on a few of them. _Surfin'_ is a dub classic first recorded in the early 70's by Ranglin, and it's fun comparing this jazzy version to the original. _54-46 (Was My Number)_ starts with a very bluesy intro by Ranglin and then gets very funky. (It's also quite likely that Ranglin was the guitarist on the original recording by Toots & the Maytals, although the notes don't say so. For that matter, Ranglin may have been the guitarist on all the tunes here that aren't Ranglin originals.) _Ball of Fire_ features an appearance by saxophonist Rolando Alphonso of Skatalites fame. _Black Disciples_ features a cool quote by Monty Alexander from _I Heard It Through The Grapevine_. On another tune, Alexander quotes from the _Habanera_ from the opera Carmen. I'm sure there are many more quotes in Alexander's and Ranglin's solos, but those are the ones I noticed. Finally, _Bourbon Street Skank_ is most probably _Heavenless_ by Don Drummond & the Skatalites, on which Ranglin most probably played the guitar lead.

A Ranglin classic.......2005-10-24

This album makes really your day or night! It's honest. It has a lot of emotions, a mid-groovalistic-reggae-jazziz tempo, travelling mood and a lot of guitar magic-riffs. An Ernest Ranglin's classic.

Ranglin first gained the world's attention in the 60s when he played a major role in developing Ska, and in this album his music still sounds fresh and exciting. The back-up group consists of acoustic bass, drums, percussion and famous Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander. My personal favourite tracks have to be 'Surfin', 'Below the Bassline' and the Reggae classic 'Ball of Fire' with outstanding sax solos by the mighty Ronald Alphonso. A stunning blend of Ska, Reggae & Jazz, Definetly worth checking out.

I bought this CD on impulse and was rewarded by a fantastic recording! Earnest Ranglin is one of those characters who's never really been in the limelight, despite the fact that he's been making music for about 50 years, and this release shows there's still plenty more to come. Ranglin was an influential figure in the beginnings and evolution of ska, has produced a steady output of solo LPs since the 1960s ("Wranglin" being a good example), as well as being in constant demand as a session musician for studios and sound systems in Jamaica. He has also played at festivals across the world and is probably most famous for arranging the global 60s smash 'My Boy Lollipop' for Millie Small.

"Below the Bassline" can be best described as a Jazz-Reggae crossover LP. Ranglin provides us with a fresh insight into some well-seasoned Reggae classics, as well as throwing in a few self-composed originals. Ranglin's guitar playing is inspired! The spotlight doesn't just shine on Ranglin - the other players are all incredible, in particular the bass and drums (Ira Coleman and Idris Muhammad respectively). The end result is some really authentic, stripped down acoustic versions of classic roots tracks. The highlights for me are the versions of Satta Massagana (by the Abyssinians), King Tubby Meets the Rockers (by Augustus Pablo), Black Disciples (by Burning Spear) and Congo Man (by the Congos). Being an acoustic recording adds a new dimension to compositions I've come to love over the years. Each track is excellently arranged, executed and produced, giving Ranglin a perfect platform on which to express his unique guitar prowess.

What more can I say? The music speaks for itself! Ranglin is a truly remarkable talent. He plays guitar with precise skill, conviction and real emotion. Whether you're a reggae fan or not I know you'll be enthralled by the tracks on this CD. All in all a great purchase which is well worth seeking out!

Even Worse.......2004-11-03

Some of the reviews for this recording were negative in nature.
I must say, after listening to it, I have to say that the reviewers were being kind. It is worse than anyone said. For
all the talent available on the side of the performers, it is AMAZING that such a piece of nauseating fluff could be created.
Maybe it is a joke album, but I, for one, am not laughing. Maybe
the musicians had their tongues in their cheeks so far they could
not play their instruments properly.

Great musicians, so-so music.......2002-05-22

When I saw the list of artists on this album my jaw dropped. I mean these are some of the premiere musicians of our era. Well, I was severely disappointed by the lack of effort put into this album. Each song is a 4 minute long solo - each with their own personal lack of depth. Listening to this album is like listening to the bath tub filling up.

This is a very good and unique band. The album has two vocalists; Janina and Cyrus. Very soothing sounds and profound lyrics. To preview their songs go to their website www.edria.net where they have links to where you can listen to their songs. If what you're looking for is new music that has not been over-populated with fans and thus your voice becomes but another wave of the sea, then edria is for you because you can be sure they appreciate you individually. Trust me, being popular is not always being good and not being popular does not mean being bad.
