This is a junk product, a "murder of culture" as one review (too) nicely put it. A group of pseudo spiritual characters gathered to stuff even more money into their already fat bank accounts. Madonna? Demi Moore? Topped by Shallow-ak Chopra? Gimme a break...

The soundtrack of Aparna Sen's "Mr. and Mrs. Iyer" introduced me to the 10th century poet saint, Jalaluddin Rumi. I was so impressed with, "Kithe Meher Ali..." (lyrics in Hindi inspired by Rumi's work) that I immediately set out to buy his work. However, each time I tried to read the poetry, I was at loss of the lesson. As it sat on my book shelf for several years, I returned back to it recently to meet with the similar fate.

This time though, a wonderful email suggested that I should look for Dr. Chopra's "A Gift of Love" for guidance. Dr. Chopra and his friend enhance the message of Rumi through this compilation.

Packaging: It is an added bonus that the packaging of this product is quite appealing as well. There are two CDs included. CD 1: 35 poems recited by Chopra and his coterie of wonderful readers. CD 2: includes Chopra narrating the story of Rumi and Shams and his examination of the seven spiritual laws of love. (attraction, infatuation, communion, intimacy, surrender, passion, ecstacy).

This CD is an absolute joy to listen to! It thrills your senses. It makes your skin tingle. It opens your heart to love, brings you closer to God, the universe and all beings.

Usually I buy a CD, listen to it a few times and then it sits and collects dust. But this one is different. If I have a stressful day or whatever, I come home and listen to this and in only minutes I feel the stresses of the day leave me. I feel more grounded and as a friend said, it has the ability to put you in a deep meditative state.

I would rarely give any CD 5 stars, but this one rates it easily and if you are at are familiar with Rumi - you know his words are profoundly deep and touching to the human soul.

Previously available as a 1996 import on the World Circuit label, this nearly 72-minute collection of recordings were originally made for radio broadcast between 1970 and 1978. As a single collection, this is the finest yet of Toure's slow-burning music, characterized by nimble, expressive guitar playing and strong, expressive singing. Lyrically, the songs are mostly devotionals, praising a loved one, Allah, and various government initiatives (including Radio Mali itself). Half the tunes feature Toure alone on guitar and vocals; elsewhere he is backed by the ngoni's beautiful rattle-buzz, a full choir, a smattering of percussion, and a violin player whose sliding, high-pitched notes echo the fiddle playing of Appalachia. Throughout, Toure's singing has a wider range than you'd expect (considering that he's known as the "African John Lee Hooker") and his bluesy guitar playing is always melodic, modal, and meditative. Toure repeats musical phrases over and over again, subtly changing them. But he never gets fancy for its own sake--his style (which adapts Sonrai, Peul, and Tamascheq techniques) sounds as natural as a babbling brook. Strands of sing-songy, seemingly simplistic melodies wrap around each other, coming together and unwinding like strands of RNA. This is some mind-blowing stuff. --Mike McGonigal

One of the most internationally successful West African musicians of the last decade, guitarist and singer Ali Farka Toure was approaching the age of 50 when his self-titled album came to the attention of the world music audience in the late '80s. Since then, he's toured in North America and Europe and recorded with artists such as Taj Mahal and members of the Chieftains. But it was his Grammy-winning 1994 collaboration with Ry Cooder, "Talking Timbuktu," that won him on a larger scale. Inspired by African rhythmic and musical traditions extending back for generations, this album features materials originally recorded for broadcast on Radio Mali from 1970-78, and loaned by the station's archive. It was these tapes that introduced Toure's unique guitar style to the attention of his countrymen. Once available in France on vinyl, these were among the very first commercial records of Malian music. Available briefly as an import CD, this treasurable collection comes to the U.S. at last with major distribution, and arrives as his latest release on Ryko hits the #1 spot on the CMJ world chart.

Radio Mali was the first Ali Farka Toure release I had ever bought or heard. At the time I was listening a lot to Blind Lemon Jefferson and found some interesting parallels between the two musicians. I like the dry, intimate, non-produced, straight to the microphone sound of Radio Mali. Like Lemon Jefferson, Ali Farka Toure has a deep, resonant and booming voice that equals or betters his guitar playing. My brother noted that some of the songs are akin to Celtic music in that they are built from a single melody line that is repeated with variations. Simple but subtle. I'd use the word pastoral to describe this music, since it is very relaxed in feel and rhythm. For a guitarist, Radio Mali is an endlessly fascinating (and at times, frustratingly hard) batch of songs to play along with. Like Lemon Jefferson, Toure is an extremely deft fingerpicker who relies on just a few basic chord positions (open C in particular) and independent bass and melody to sketch out a very full arrangement with just six strings. His rhythmic sense, and use of some very offbeat rhythms (most likely traditional Malian rhythms) add a great deal of depth and complexity that rewards repeated listening. I just really like this stuff and am glad it was recorded and is available.

4 out of 5 stars Great Ali Farka Touré CD...but have your hand on the volume!.......2004-12-23

I have listened to a lot of Ali Farka Touré, primarily his later works, and especially Niafunké. I must say that this CD was both refreshing and a tiny bit dry. The first track is like a cup of strong coffee first thing in the morning, with Ali and another musician playing a little duet on njarka violins, with Ali suddenly speaking very rapidly and loudly. It sounds like he's introducing himself, as one hears 'Mali' followed by 'Bamako.' There are some REALLY good tracks on this CD, especially Machengoidi, Samariya, and my favorite, Hani. All of the tracks are good, but Niafunké is still my favorite AFT CD. I understand that these are old recordings, and perhaps the mixing isn't the best, but I would really recommend that you have your hand on the volume control while listening to this CD. Ali's voice seems to have gotten better with time. On Niafunké, his voice is a smooth, velvety, deep baritone. On Radio Mali, however, it is significantly more nasal, is somewhat grating, and lacks the beefiness that you hear in Niafunké. The vocals seem to be far too loud in comparison to the instruments, and anyone who is familiar with AFT's music knows that he's not shy about using his voice. On many tracks, the guitars' introduction lull the listener into a trance, only to be violently shaken out of it by Ali's younger, much more nasal voice attacking a high note. This happens several times throughout the disc, and I've often found myself reaching for the volume knob. The music tends to get somewhat redundant. With a whopping 16 tracks, the same instrumentation (usually two acoustic guitars, with an occasional ngoni [not the kamalengoni of the Bambara, but an instrument more similar to the Tuareg tahardent lute]), and Ali's habit of not utilizing more than a few keys, the songs begin to sound very similar. Perhaps the CD just hasn't grown enough on me....but I agree with one of the other reviewers of this CD that this is best appreciated by one who has heard other Ali CDs. I am well accustomed to VERY diverse and unique music, and this CD actually began to bore me a little bit near the end. I think this CD is great for die hard Ali fans. And for those of us less dedicated Ali fans, it's a very interesting compilation of his earliest recordings. Great music to relax to.

This is row music, the most traditional of Farka Toure's recordings. when I first heard him, on "The Source", I too thought of John Lee Hooker. This impression gradually faded on "The River" and completely disappeard when I heard this cd.
Farka Toure is an original, and in this cd there is only one track that may be influenced by the blues, which is Hani (track 7).
The rest of the cd is hauntingly beautiful, and rewards each listening with fresh discoveries. In AFT I found a rare instance where a musician's voice and guitar playing rival each other for beauty and skill, with both coming up as winners.
I agree with those who say this cd is better appreciated after hearing other AFT cd's, or for people who have listened to other Malian musicians. I would also like to draw attention to the beautiful liner notes and to AFT's remarkable story of how he became a musician.

5 out of 5 stars Lost recordings of a world music fave.......2001-10-29

Confirmed fans of Mali's famous blues griot should go ga-ga over this treasure trove of his earliest recordings, which spans 1970-1978. And, as someone who has a long-confirmed dislike of Ali Farka Toure, even I have to admit I enjoyed this record a lot. ...I'm not sure what it is about his other albums that put me off -- partly it's just that I find them a bit dry and boring. I suspect what I really don't like, though like is the sense that Farka Toure finds *himself* to be a master musician, and sounds a little stuffy because of it -- sort of like a West African version of Richard Thompson. Of course, I've never met the guy, and he could be a real sweetheart, but that's just the feeling I get from listening to his records. Not this one, though. Among other treats, this disc includes all the tracks off his first album, along with other tracks he made while working as an engineer at Mali's national radio station. What I hear in these earlier recordings is a sense of unsureness, an eagerness to succeed, without being sure how far his efforts will take him -- which comes off as much more endearing than his current status as a "world music legend". There's something to be said for going back to the roots -- even of a roots musician.

Fans of Talking Timbuktu will find this to be a rather different experience. While it isn't polished in the way that Timbuktu is, it is thoroughly enjoyable nevertheless. Very much a feeling that one is listening to the sounds of western Africa and Toure's roots as a guitar master. The songs are pleasant and relaxing, though again not as entirely upbeat perhaps as Timbuktu. If you don't have Talking Timbuktu already buy both discs and treat yourself to a variety of Ali Farka Toure!

This was an alright album. Some songs, like Underground Blues, are good, other are not. The song that stands out is Victim of the Ghetto. That song is just tight. Loved the beat, sound like you were in the middle of the ghetto, late at night. The record scratching was tight, and the lyrics just put the picture in your mind on where these guys were coming from. I loved it. It was a great way to start an album out, I just wish more of the songs were just as strong. Get this album just for Victim of the Ghetto, which the beat was later sampled by Nas in Pappa Wuz a Playa. That song definitely was one that I loved back in 92 when I first heard the song and was getting into hip hop. Definitely has you putting it on repeat. There are other songs that are good on the album, but nothing compared to this. Then there are skippable songs like Humpin.

    I am a big fan of Joe Satriani and loved what Stu did on his Live in San Francisco DVD (not just the solo, the entire performance) so I thought I had to give this album a shot.

    Going from some of Jo's newest stuff to this 1980's solo album was a big jump but all up I was quite blown away. I have heard Stu do a lot of amazing tap work but both his tapping and slapping on 'Sexually Active' and the entire album is just incredible - highly inspiring.

    I admit that I don't have many bass solo albums but I was truly inspired with what Stu does on this one. Highly recomended for bassists. Would be good to see how he does it all actually, can't wait for a Stu Hamm DVD!

    PS - it was interesting to see that the bass solo on the Joe Satriani Live in San Francisco album was mostly based around 'Moonlight Sonata' and 'Country Music' off this album!

    Radio Free Albumeth is Stuart Hamm's most diverse and best CD. The follow up,Kings of Sleep, is also excellent but not nearly as diverse. The title track is an example of Stu playing Jazz/Rock Fusion and is even made better by Alan Holdsworth contributing an amazing solo. "Dr. Gradus Ad Parnasum" is a great reading of Debussy and is imitated verbatim by the bassist. "Moonlight Sonata" is another excellent reading of a classical piece and Stu captures the mood of the movement very well. Both are examples of the artist not allowing technique to overpower the tune but use it to capture the essence of the tune. "Sexually Active" is a tour de force for Stu. Slap and Tap abound in this piece and Stu even imitates sweep picking by sweeping with his thumb. The technique is mind numbing but,once again, the groove is never lost. Joe Satriani contibutes a funky solo of his own in this song."Simple Dreams" is a short song and Stu restrains from the pyrotechnics to show that he can play without overabundance. "Flow My Tears" is a borderline new age song but technique is abound in it. New-age influenced music has never sounded better and Satch adds another perfect solo to this piece."Country Music/Night in Hell" is another Stu tour de force. Many will recognize part of it since he plays a brief version of it live at Satriani concerts. Once again, Stu pulls out all of the stops. This Cd is essential for any bassist. Stu combines technique with good composition to give bassists plenty to work on in both categories.This is the stuff that Bassists dream of and any musician will appreciate.

    Yes, I agree with other people that have reviewed this CD : if you are a bass player, you'll surely love it. If not...well, why not? There are some great melodies, even if somebody who don't like bass might think Stu is overplaying. Well, that's music for musicians basically (or maybe I have to say "bassically"?). It's Stuart Hamm's first album, but not his best. Stu is important because he was one of the first bass players to tap and slap and made a whole CD with this bass' techniques in mind (but remember, he's always trying to keep melody at first). A pioneer? Maybe.I think he's fortunate (and we bass players too) because a small record company (Relativity records) believe in this alternative solo projects that major labels don't give a damm.If you can find it, check his second CD ("Kings of sleep")where I think Stu is at his peak. If you have seen him live with Joe Satriani you probably know that ten years after this CD Stu continues to play some passages during his live bass solo. Nineties give us great bass players, but Stu's still here.

    If you like live music. If you like music that makes you drive fast. That makes you have to dance(not by yourself in your room). If you have any inkling taste of freeform, jazz-like, mad improvosational skills. Out of all 4 of Disco Biscuit's "Trance Fusion" series this is one sick SOB. If you're looking for a whole new look at what a live show could be, then Disco Biscuits is your band- & this is your album. Hurry up, listen to em', love em' , and see em' live. They ain't going to be around too much longer. This
    album reverberates on a higher level.

    As the liner notes say this album certainly does show Soft Machine changing. The album is well produced and nicely packaged. Disc 1 starts us off with a hazy version of As If with Phil Howard going crazy on drums instead of John Marshall.Also different from the song is the echo sax by Elton Dean and no solo by Roy Babbington. Drop sound just like it does on Fifth not that much over dubbing on it. The unreleased Welcome To Frillsville is a long jam with Howard actually keeping a beat,the end product of the song is a lovely smooth jazz theme. Then we see Karl Jenkins and John Marshall in for Dean and Howard. The Melody features a great version of MC and Drop,All White is the same as the version on Six. Stanley Stamps is played with a synth in the backgound,pretty good too. And the starting of a great tune of Hazard Profile actually has a better lead on the beginning rift instead of those one line notes on the other Profile. Disc 2 has the Baritone Guitar solo of Babbington with turns into the relaxing recorder and sax lead of Down the Road still no Acostic Bass solo by Babbington. North Point is a cross between D.I.S and Four Gongs with some messy synth. The smoothness of The Man Who Waved at Trains also has Peff with out the guitar rift at the end. Then we go to the finale Hazard Profile which has a different middle part with out the organ lines being in charge on chord changes. And part 5 is in there but Ratlegdge's solo is on organ not a analog synth. If you got $30 (rip-off) go out and buy this masterpiece.

    This double CD, the companion to BBC Radio 1967-1971, showcases the band at its jazziest. Consisting of "live" BBC studio versions of tunes found on the albums 5, Sixth, Seven, and Bundles, this collection is a must for all Soft Machine fans and lovers of great jazz fusion.
    Phil Howard, whose short-lived career with the Softs was represented on just one side of their studio album "5", lays down some solid rythms on disc one, while Allan Holdsworth's guitar on disc two is, as always, superb.

    Okay, Deadheads and Phishfans, simmer down. Both the Dead & Phish are gone. The mantle has to be passed on to a younger generation eventually. I think that the time is now. These guys improvise & jam with the best of them!
    I don't recall if they sing on this album ( I have a few Trancefusion Radio Broadcast cds -I think there are 4 total) . They shouldn't sing. Luckily they don't do it often on these Cds.
    But holy smokes, can these guys play!
    If you want to hear four guys play up a storm I can't reccomend this series of albums enough!
    I'm saddened to hear that the lineup has changed substantially. I hope that they can again achieve the dizzying heights on these Trancefusion albums!
    Buy it!! These guys rock!

    With a title like "Heard It On The Radio", one might expect to find a majority of songs that one once heard on the radio. Well let me tell ya something. That's not exactly the case here. I lived and breathed radio in the 80's and it wasn't until the formats became so predictable that I gave up on traditional FM. That said, I was able to recognize only five of these songs, and that's stretching it some. She Looks a Lot Like You, Hot Cherie, 10-9-8, No More Lies, and Dreams all struck me as familiar, some more than others. The rest, while occasionally interesting, left me shaking my head wondering where they might have been heard before. All in all, this is a great concept and it's too bad that Renaissance Records no longer exists because I'd keep buying them as long as they kept releasing them. You never know what you might find.

    As the title of the review indicates, the songs on this collection are OK and may jog a fond memory here and there. However, as "lost hits" compilations go, the tunes here are relatively remote, and may only be of interest to collectors. Perhaps the highlight of the package is listening to Randy Bachman's Ironhorse on "Sweet Lui-Louise" totally thieve the guitar riff and the stutter from BTO's "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet".

    I don't know what radio someone was supposed to hear this stuff on, but I only managed about to catch about three of these on my little clock radio. It's nice to get some of these on CD - "10-9-8", "She Looks a Lot Like You" and the so-bad-it's-good "Rock School". The main problem with this collection is its utter un-memorability - two hours after listening, you can't remember how most of these songs go. A pleasant listen, though.
