Funki Porcini's 'Hed Phone Sex' is easliy one of the best down-tempo/abstract hip-hop albums I have ever heard. It mixes elements of jazz, dub, breakbeat, even a little jungle as it seduces the listener. I put this up there with Luke Vibert, Bonobo, and Quantic. Give it a test.

I bought this CD out of curiosity, having followed a few links on Amazon. The reviews are very mixed but I decided to take the plunge anyway.

On getting the CD in my hands I had a great sense of trepidation. The sleeve notes are purile at best, and as noted in other reviews were quite possibly written by a 12 year old with hormones running amok.

However, its best not to judge a book by its cover and indeed this double CD is actually rather good. There are some very sexy basslines (though hardly a sexual experience), and the tracks are mixed up enough to be interesting and similar enough to carry a general theme.

In terms of providing guidance as to whether or not this CD is for you...

The reviews reveal that you will either like this CD is detest it with great passion.

If it helps, this CD claims to be a mixture of jazz and hip-hop, but in reality has more drum and bass than anything. Its kinda a jazzy version of LTJ Bukem. Gentle on the ears and relaxing.

If it had a different title and a better CD case, this album would earn less derision.

This is one of my favorite CD's. The music is fairly well described in the other reviews, so I won't add to that, but I'm surprised that 2 of the 3 previous reviews pan it. Usually even mediocre albums get nothing but rave reviews, and if there is even a little criticism it's usually s bad sign, but I have over 20 CD's of this style and to my taste only the benchmark "K & D Sessions" and Nightmare on Wax's "Carboot Soul" can compete. It's cool, relaxing, sexy music. I most frequently listen to it while stuck in rush hour traffic to keep from pulling my hair out and almost regret pulling into the driveway. I've played the CD for multiple friends and they all like it. Those who are into the style agree that it is one of the best of the genre.

...this one earned it. If you're looking for some hip, avant-agrde trip-out music 90s style, this STILL isn't what you're looking for.

It's a mish-mash of not-strong beats, wack musings on interesting instrumentations, and just plain old bad songwriting. Ambience for ambience's sake isn't refreshing; it no more pushes the envelope of a tired music scene than does record reviews. But this CD is just a little too left-field for any causal listening, and I don't shouldn't have to put my brain too heavy on a CD with so many wack tracks.

Nice idea, nice try at being different, but different has never equaled good.

This is a great cd and is probably their best. There are so many songs on this collection that just blow me away. I make my own kinds of music like theirs, but mine can never match what they do. Funki Porcini is the master of the digital audio equipment. No one even comes close to what he is able to do and alot of people will say the same thing

After a promising begining for the "new" genre of electronics and turntable Funki Porcini and Ninja Tune help push the boundries of what is "acceptable" as not being "wack". The music on this cd has substance from begining to end without any of the tipical garbage we all know and hear everyday, otherwise passing as "mainstream". Call it R&B, or whatever it's still crap anyway you cut it. With this release we can now get back to what making music is supposed to be all about.

Samples carefully mixed with instramentals that are equally dream sequence and funki groove( if you can imagine such a thing). There are two cd's in this release and they both deliver almost two hours of Porcini's style of what might have been called "trip hop" in friendlier times. Pleasantly surprised you will be.

a little gem...this album is groovy from begining to end. expect to be chilled, in a polyrhythmic soundscape. it's minimal, but finely crafted, with choice samples and solid beats. it's excellent for nookie, smoking and reading. dont listen to while driving...its a bit hypnotic.

This is a great album. So good that I lost it and then had to repurchase it. It is great background music perfect for quiet nights. Funki Pocini take you on a great ride from start to finish the same way the Beatles do with Abbey Road.

Every so often, a quality release makes it onto store shelves and swiftly fades into oblivion, unnoticed, never to be heard from again. This is such a release. SEX OVER THE PHONE was originally issued in 1985, but only overseas. The Village People and their producer, Jacques Morali, having presumably learned their lessons with the dismal New Wave and Funk of the RENAISSANCE and IN THE STREETS albums, respectively, decided to return to what they all did best: dance music. However, don't let the VP's past disco work influence your thoughts. This is well beyond disco, and light years away from a "Macho Man" or a "YMCA". Despite its sleazy title, this album is of outstanding quality on all fronts. The music is serious, solid mid-80's club music that aged very well. The vocals are the VP's finest work to date: they know the material is their best yet and it clearly comes through.

Now that it's finally been issued domestically, 16 years after its original release, this particular CD benefits from two versions of the European hit "Sex Over The Phone": the original controversial mid-tempo version in which a man returns the phone sex call, and the faster club version in which a woman returns the call. Despite the overall theme throughout the tracks, none of the songs are vulgar or overly suggestive. I am hard-pressed to select one track as my favorite, but I do find that "Just Give Me What I Want", "Power Of The Night", and "Sensual" have that extra edge that makes them ultra-catchy.

I originally bought this release on vinyl back in 1985. I wore it out and bought the CD version the following year. It's been in my CD player ever since. The other CD's come and go, but that one stays. Yes, it's that good and it still sounds as fresh as it did 16 years ago.

It's fitting that this is the very last album of original material the VP ever released. I wish they'd come out with something new for their longtime fans, but I doubt anything could ever match the beauty and quality of this release.

    Funki Porcini has put out some of the most unique sounds with this CD. Taking the listener out of the normal realm of music. This isn't music you just listen to, it invades your senses. This is music you feel. Start to finish.
