dreadful foreign language pronunciation.......2006-07-17
this album is a nice and smooth mixture of r&b, jazz, traditional jewish songs and a bit of bossa nova. chava has a beautiful and delicate voice. i would quite like this album if it weren't for songs which chava mirel sings in foreign languages - hebrew (3 songs), portuguese (1 song) and ladino (1 song). her pronunciation is a disaster, a very strong american accent makes it quite difficult to recognize that those songs are actually not in english but in other languages. she delivers foreign words using sounds of the english language. it sounds really awkward, distracting, and is a serious drawback of this album.
apparently chava mirel doesn't know how bad she is at foreign langauages. her website announces that she aspires to an international music career and proudly says, "a cover of "the girl from ipanema" is delivered in IMPECCABLE portuguese".
i would love to listen to more chava mirel's music, but never ever want to listen to her singing in languages other than english.
