A delicious set of some of the best Blue Note jazz........2000-01-17
Want some of the best jazz around--? Budget impaired, like myself? Fortunately, for us, there's this Blue Note Records collection of the best from favorites like Donald Byrd, Lou Donaldson, and Grant Green. Now, the powers that be at EMI-Capitol thought to get some sells of this great jazz by packaging it as a "sample this" offering to hip-hoppers/rap ranconteurs. It turns out that they needn't have done so. The various volumes and the box set with Vols 1-4 has some great work like Bobbi Humphrey's "Harlem River Drive" and Herbie Hancock's "Olilloqui Valley". The music, in other words, can really stand alone...I would urge those interested in sampling to listen to these greats not to lift a groove, but to help themselves in learning how to make their own groove....Dig?

Part 1 of Tommy Boy's comprehensive compilation of early electro, hip-hop, and freestyle hits concentrates on the fundamentals. The collection begins as it must, with Afrika Bambaataa and Soulsonic Force's epochal "Planet Rock," a sort of Rosetta stone for producers in the decade that followed and beyond. Loved (and sampled) to this very day, "Planet Rock" cleared the way for all the tracks that follow it here (arranged chronologically), including "Walking on Sunshine" by Rocker's Revenge and Jellybean's timbale-mad upgrade of Babe Ruth's "The Mexican." But despite the limitations implied in the compilation's subtitle, "New York Electro Hip-Hop + Underground Dance Classics, 1980-1985," the set reaches back to earlier sources, inevitably including Kraftwerk's bleats, blips, and beats. --John Sanchez
Customer Reviews:
The best 80's dance compilation out there!.......2007-03-25
God, I love this series! These compliations are what I've been looking two decades for. Looking in vain for the 80's dance and b-boy classics that I remember from the tape compliations that used to somehow get into our hands and the mixes on WBMX and WGCI in Chicago back in the day(It's hard to imagine that WGCI used to play dance music like this at one time!)through endless compliations of 70's disco, 80's HI-NRG, Rap, Funk, House, top 40 dance-pop and New Wave. Not that there is anything remotely wrong with any of those kinds of music,I love those genres(well not rap so much), and have many collections of them, but I could never find the stuff I was looking for-the real underground dance hits that filled the mixes. But I have now. I've had these cd's for several years now, but I'm writing my reviews just now. Another good collection is Rhino Records Electric Funk series.
This collection starts off with many of the founding tracks of the genre, Afrika Bambataa's Planet Rock, Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express and Numbers/Computer World(both of which inspired Planet Rock),and Planet Rock's follow up, Play At Your Own Risk by Planet Patrol. It takes Bambataa's and Kraftwerk's monolithic beats and adds soulful R&B vocals and funky, dancey synths making it a totally different experience. The inclusion of Bostich, by Yello(of Ferris Bueller's Day Off Oh Yeah fame)is a rare treat. A total classic, as is Yaz's synthy/soulful Don't Go. We get Jellybean's great Latin freestyle/electro meets Carlos Santana-type guitar god classic rock on The Mexican(who can forget that raspy laughing). One of my very favorites on here is Walking On Sunshine, by Rockers Revenge, an incredible mixture of disco, electro-funk and Caribbean rhythms. Youv've go to be dead if this doesn't get you in a great mood and gets your body moving. Much better than the Katrina and Waves song with the same title. Another stone-cold classic, and just as rare to find is Dirty Talk, by Klein & M.B.O.. An infectious elecro-disco, Euro ditty, this is recognizable to all dance fans. Although Don't Make Me Wait, by The NYC Peechboys, is a much respected record, it doesn't really do that much for me, I feel it's a bit overrated IMO. A Little Bit Of Jazz by the Nick Straker Band is a lot of listening pleasure. Starchild by Level 42, from before they became well known, has a great bassline, but sounds almost "smooth jazz" sometimes. It is nice, though. Love Money by T.W. Funkmasters is a quirky, funky number, that sounds strange right after the crisp elecronics of Dirty Talk. However, it would sound totally at home at any modern deep house club. One of my very favorite tunes on here is Imagination's Just An Illusion. It starts out slow, slinky but just builds and builds until you are squirming with ecstasy and singing along.
I cant recommend this series to fans of dance, freestyle, and early hip-hop enough. This is the stuff that the DJ's were playing back in the day and they play to this day in old-school mixes(along with HI-NRG, Italo, and early House cuts) and this stuff will bring back fond memories. And the sounds are ecclectic too, just like it was back then. You really can't find many of these tracks anywhere else. And you really can't get much better than this series.
Perfect beats are a must have collection.......2004-09-17
I have bought all 4 volumes and I must say it is the most comprehensive compilation of hard to find dance tracks from back in the day. If it wasn't for this compilation, a lot of those timeless hits would be scattered in obscurity leaving the nostalgic among us trying to remember "what was that song again?" But with this volume you have all the hits of that time together in one place...
well worth the money
Nice collection, but wrong mixes.......2000-04-29
A good selection of underground dance sounds from the early 80s, but you can't really relive that clubbing experience with these short mixes. Who ever danced to to a 3:46 version of Dirty Talk? At least this collection does the honest thing and lists all cuts and lengths on the CD. A great driving CD for the car if you've become too busy or lazy to make your own tapes from your old 12" EPs.
Essential for fans of any kind of dance music.......1999-10-28
This is really a wonderful album, a testament to the strength of early house, electro, freestyle and hiphop. These are all familiar sounds to anyone who spent the better half of their youth in an urban nightclub setting. If anything, these pieces have all matured rather gracefully, and as a soundtrack to the summer, only the most stodgy rock and roll fan would have to turn this down.

Expanded to 10 volumes from the original 7, Timber Records head Joey Gardner's Freestyle's Greatest Beats is a roughly chronological history of the music. Volume 1 scores with freestyle fundamentals from heavy hitters such as TKA, Cover Girls, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, and Exposé. This disc is heavy on the classics and features cuts that aren't played as much anymore. Jellybean's "The Mexican," in its original form, blurs the line between dance music and rock; England's Information Society brings some Euro-cool to the Latin hip-hop; and Nayobe's hyperemotional "Please Don't Go" hits the head as hard as the hips. --John Sanchez
Customer Reviews:
Cassandra .......2007-07-20
This cd is a timeless classic, with artists such as 'Noel,' and 'TKA.' I discoverd Freestyle music not long ago and am fully aware that it was particulary popular in the 80's, appealing to a vast Latian audiance.
This cd is great for anyone who likes 80's dance music. It great to have acsess to such cds as in England the music is often dull. 80's American music is alot more 'up beat' and 'exciting' and this cd is a taste of what was and is missing today!
Great Starter CD for Freestyle fans Silent Morning YES!!!!.......2007-01-10
The first 4 songs are good enough for me with special emphasis on Silent Morning. My favorite song of all time - best memories with this one - even my 4yr old knows this is Papa's song! Make sure you listen to Noel and TKA very LOUD to appreciate the music nuaces and instruments. If you have a system where you can enhance bass etc you will enjoy these their songs even more. I start out listening to OWL to get myself ready for SM and that's when I blow my ears out with the Ipod. The other discs are not as good but still good enough for classics. Get yourself Vol. 2 just for Noel & LLCJ [ no not LL Cool J ] Lisa Lisa & the Cult Jam. Vol. 5 for Bad of the Heart -- dope -- and intro to Coro and the synth sounding Dance with me. This is what awesome dance is about. The mere mention of pussycat dolls, spice girls and all other Q'rrap made today makes me sick to my stomach. Remember the first 4 songs are where it's at you will not be sorry. If you want that true old school 80's sound it's here.
Freestyle classics all the way!.......2000-07-01
In the late 80s, early 90s I grew up on this stuff in NYC, clubbing at the likes of The Tunnel, The Underground, Heartthrob, 1018, The World ... (I'm sure all you people not from New York, or from Long Island *grin*, had your own clubs) ... I can guarantee this Freestyle Greatest Beats series is jammed packed with classics. I needn't rehash the contents, since you can easily see the list of songs here on Amazon. But all these artists - Noel, Will to Power, Judy Torres, Cynthia, TKA, Latin Rascals, etc. - bring me right back to the days. I finally found songs I'd wanted for more than 10 years now. What more can I say. You'd better make sure you have thick walls and nobody's home when you play these CDs, because you're going to be pumping it up and swaying to the beats right there in your living room. (I know I do).
DANCE TILL YOU CAN'T DANCE NO MORE!.......1999-10-27
If you enjoyed those unforgettable 80s when freestyle dance music ruled, then don't miss the memories this CD brings back to you.
A Freestyle Collection Must-Have.......1998-08-11
This disc is the first of a 10-disc series that is the definitive collection of Freestyle music. The series features a variety of songs from the most popular artists of the genre, including many hard-to-find classics. All discs include comprehensive liner notes charting the history of Freestyle music. A must-have collection for anyone interested in dance music from the mid-1980s through the early 1990s.
Disc One Highlights: Almost every song on this issue is considered a Freestyle classic. Special mentions go to Sa-Fire's "Don't Break My Heart" and Noel's "Silent Morning."
This volume also contains classics by TKA, The Cover Girls, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Sweet Sensation, Nayobe, Information Society, Judy Torres, Exposé, and more.

One of the seminal hip-hop labels, Tommy Boy has turned to the successful MTV Party to Go and ESPN Jock Jams series as cash cows, but increasingly the label is also turning to its vaults. Following the Perfect Beats series, a four-volume collection of New York electro-funk and dance music of the early and mid 1980s, comes Greatest Beats, a four-volume series of the label's finest hip-hop, with a sprinkling of R&B. They've left the chronological approach to Ken Burns and his ilk and sought to make mixes that are equal parts historical documents and party tapes. Volume 1 launches with Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force doing "Planet Rock," a song that defined summer 1982. Then the disc seamlessly jumps into the 1990s for Naughty by Nature's "Everything's Going to Be Alright" and Digital Underground's "Doowhutchyalike." In all, it's surprising to see how well Latifah's "Ladies First" and K7's "Move It Like This" aged and how much better the Bambaataa-James Brown collaboration "Unity" sounds without the nearby shadow of "Planet Rock." The mixture of radio, 12-inch, and LP versions creates an interesting combination of funk, rap, and soul. --Martin Johnson
Customer Reviews:
Droppin 'em Hard.......1999-09-02
If this disc also had "Looking for the Perfect Beat" on it, it would be the only disc needed from this set. Afrikaa's tracks on this CD are phenomenal and carry the weight. I could do without Latifah and the Force MD's and James Brown. All of the other tracks had great beats and phat sounds. The "Unity" track is OK, but I'd trade it for "Looking..." any day. I love "Doowhatchalike", but I'd trade it for "Freaks of the Industry"

Vol.1 Essential Disco : Various Artists.......2003-10-16
Yes! Now this is what I call a proper disco compilation. All tracks feature in their extended full-length 12" versions. And all cuts are from the more soulful quality end of the disco market. Also, there is a nice mix of popular and rare tracks. Take note record companies.. this is what a good disco compilation should sound like! ..Kill for a copy.

Album Description
In urban-speak, the poetry of the city is the landscape of bus stops, taco stands, low-wage jobs, no jobs, gangs, fast cars whipping down endless freeways, and side streets full of pot holes. This CD represents a new, glorious start for urban music. These new stars are urban poets. A barrage of great music coming from all directions hits music lovers. The artists featured are fairly new to the contemporary music scene. Nevertheless, their powerful songs inject a shot of adrenaline and excitement into a stale musical landscape. In doing so, they broaden the urban musical palette, trample existing boundaries, and take risks to achieve greatness. With their passion, polish and power these artists are destined to become the new higher standard. Their voice will be heard not just in America, but also across the world. We hope you enjoy this album.
