Exactly where do you fit an artist that can belt out a gospel hymn that will make you catch the holy ghost, strike the chords of a guitar like Edward Lodewijk Van Halen and pen a hit reminiscent of Earth, Wind & Fire, Prince and Sly & The Family Stone all rolled into one? The answer is both nowhere and everywhere. The truth of the matter is that Martin Luther is just one bad-ass artist who doesn't neatly fit into any one particular category.

This album is great and he is even better in person! I suggest everyone to check him out, I went to see him by chance and fell in love with his voice and music. In fact I'm going to see him for the 3rd time in the last year.

Martin Luther has managed to blur boundaries and venture into musical territories that most other urban artists only hint at, and in a perfect world this cd would be chalking up hits and critical acclaim. It combines funky R&B with psychedelic pop and sensual balladry, and creates a mind-bending, booty-shaking musical experience. The CD plays well from start to finish and restarts just as evenly, so you can let it play over and over again without ever growing tired. It has a good set of songs for different people, all very well performed. No bad tracks, no mistakes, and no disappointments. I highly recommend this CD to any fans of Martin Luther's 2000 release, The Calling, as well as to anyone who appreciates smart, literate, and on point artists.

Ok, so I must admit that I log on amazon.com and look at other people's reviews before a buy an record of an artist that I never heard of.
I listened and I brought and I am not mad about it. I think it was great.
I think this guy is sick with the instruments and his ability to change styles when ever he wants to is priceless.
He almost remeinds me of Van Hunt and Lenny Kravitz.
I can appreciate that.

I was truly moved by the sweetness of his voice. With very little back up-no violins, horns nor electric piano- the thrill of Gage's pure soul was enticing. I saw him perform on French television (TV5), and I made it a point to write down the name so I could search for his music. I understand French and I am eager to get the album and sing along!

I haven't been this excited over an R&B album since the early 90s. I never realized that there was r&B in France but Gage has made this very clear! Soul Rebel has something on it for everyone from the painfully beautiful "Je T'Aime Quand Meme" to the all out dance jams like "Trop Fresh", "Ce Soir" and N'Arette Pas. I do not understand French nor do I need to . Music is the universal language, especially with this album. Thank god for imports!

      highly recommend this, three early cd's for the price on one. some good versions of songs that were re-recorded for his later alblums. this music is all up and happy and positive. still reggae but sometimes ska/reggae. Rainbow Country is a great song.

              The final album of Jimmy Arnold's short career--it was only his third album--was released in 1983, nine years before his untimely death at the age of 40. The fourteen songs contained herein are a mixture of traditional tunes and originals (Robbie Robertson's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is the lone cover), and taken as a whole they evoke the period of the Civil war. As John Hartford said in the original liner notes: "This almost psychic album by Jimmy Arnold comes clear more through research of the soul rather than research in a library...."

              Indeed, from the opeing ballad "Jesse James" through the toe-tapping closer "Sally Ann," Arnold takes the listener back in time through a series of songs that are sometimes raucus, and at other times somber. Arnold plays a lot of the instruments himself, including rhythm and lead guitars, banjo, fiddle and harmonica. Among the guest musicians are Mike Auldridge on Dobro.

              It's a shame Arnold gave up recording after this album, but it's a testament to the power of this album that it's still in print nearly a quarter of a century after its debut. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

              My wife introduced me to Jimmy`s music about 4 years ago. I must say it is some of the best boot scootin toe tappin music I have ever heard. He makes you feel as though he was in the Civil War and knew the folks he sings about. The only thing bad about Jimmy Arnold`s music is there wasn`t more of it recorded before it was too late.

              I've looked for this song (Rebel Solier) for 20 years and finally found it. It sounds as great now as it did then. The rest of the songs on this CD are really nice, I whish I had known of, and listened to, Jimmy Arnold earlier.

              I first heard Southern Soul in 1983 when I borrowed a copy from Wally Cleavers recording studio in Fredericksburg, VA. My partner Hank and I had been recording at the studio and had the good fortune to meet Jimmy Arnold. Jimmy also sat in on our sessions. I didn't know he had recorded Southern Soul until after we were done at the studio and Jimmy had left. When I heard Southern Soul It touched a part of me I didn't know was in touchable. Jimmy's gone, but his music still has his soul in it with his natural southern style and heartfelt vocals. "Thanks Jimmy"

              A blend of bluegrass, hillbilly, and southern country music, this is a thoroughly enjoyable work for those who like southern country music and ponder the War of Northern Aggression. You'll love it or you won't like it at all.
