Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski hatched the idea for Rogue's Gallery while filming "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"--that idea being to cast genteel rock superstars like Bono, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Andre Corr, and Sting to reinterpret gritty seafaring standards for an exhaustive 43-track double-disc set produced by Hal Wilner. Throw in a bunch of credible folk stars (Loudon Wainwright III, Richard Thompson), their offspring (Rufus, Teddy) and a string of other curious characters (Jarvis Cocker, Antony) and what results is one of the strangest compilations in recent memory, if not exactly the most historically authentic or, well, digestible. Nick Cave embraces the role just a little too hard on "Fire Down Below," while Ferry can't help but sound like he's singing for the cast of "The Love Boat," but cut through the chaff and there is some real bootie here: Bono's "Dying Sailor to His Shipmates," Jolie Holland's "The Grey Funnel Line" and "Boney" by a mysterious tramp called Jack Sh**, which must be some kind of anagram for Johnny Depp. --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description
While working on the two "Pirates Of The Carribean" films, Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski became fascinated with the lore and fable of the pirates and sailors who ran the high seas. Enter legendary producer Hal Wilner, who brings his knack for matching maverick musicians with extraordinary material. Artists on this double disc set include Bono, Sting, Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry, Lou Reed, Richard Thompson, Lucinda Williams, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, and many more. "Rogue's Gallery" offers a look at the hardships, the horrors, the lusts and lurid depths, and the crystal beauty that led men to the sea in ships for hundreds of years.
Customer Reviews:
Fun--but not great.......2007-07-03
What a concept--a pirate song co-produced by Verbinski and Depp inspired by the "Pirates of the Carribean" series. It should be great and in places, it is. The big question I came away with is--who is Jack Sh**? That one definitely has me guessing.
I won't belabor the song content or the production value. I think the most notable reviews have got that down pat, although I'm not marking down as far as they have because I'm giving points for originality being a fan of Spike Jones and some other truly demented people.
One thing to note: this is not a CD you'd buy if you were looking for something to amuse your kids. Some of the content is very bawdy and Mom and Dad would have some serious 'splaining to do to the little pirates. There's both some language and some situations that are more twisted than a Hangman's knot.
aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhh!.......2007-06-09
Some of the songs are quite good(mellow)others a little odd. Its what I expected, but not what you would expect.
Disappointment would be an understatement.......2007-06-04
It is not unusual to find sea shanties performed by not the greatest musicians or singers in the world. It is not unusual to find shanties sung by people who have difficulty keeping perfect pitch, or tempo. But at least they understand what the music is about, and sing it with heart and enthusiasm and a love for the genre.
Hal Wilner should stick to whatever genre it is that made him know enough to be approached by labels, because he clearly has no understanding, and less enthusiasm for *this* genre.
If you love lively music from the maritime era, you can only be bitterly disappointed by this collection. Out of 43 tracks, I found 15 that were salvageable. Sort of.
I've already tossed this onto the pile to go to the resale shop. It wasn't worthy the cost of shipping.
Zzz..........2007-04-04
I have to admit that I have no idea what kinds of music the pirates sang aboard their ships. I know it probably wasn't "yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me," but I expected something different than this. I think my expectations have been colored by groups like The Pogues, Flogging Molly, The Tossers, and the Real McKenzies. I have an annual Pirate Party and I was hoping to find some good music here to get people in the mood for a treasure hunt or pirate liar's dice, but instead, the music on this CD is something I'd put on if the party went on too long and I wanted to encourage people to leave. Some of it is actually awful and the rest is too slow and plodding to inject much energy into any situation.
I appreciate what was attempted here (contemporary artists paying homage to sea chanteys in the spirit of our romanticized version of the pirate era) but it just doesn't really work. The effect is similar to what would be achieved if the London Philharmonic Orchestra attempted to play rap "music" with Luciano Pavarotti rhymin' while flashing gang signs.
another set of hopes are smashed.......2007-03-29
the selection of titles attracted me. The quality of the arrangements, the voices, and the music---are all quite bad.
It is VERY sad that these same titles, could not have been produced for quality. They sound like a nightmare.

Album Description
As co-founder of the legendary rock band Traffic, Dave Mason has always been a powerful force in popular music. His tenure as their guitarist, vocalist & songwriter, along with his friends Stevie Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood, netted the quartet several hit singles and albums including his signature tune Feelin' Alright and international smashes like Hole In My Shoe.
While collaborating with his friends like Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Delaney and Bonnie and George Harrison, Dave Mason continued to develop his trademark sound, while igniting a solo career that took off with his first platinum plus debut album Alone Together from 1970.
Over the next three decades, Dave Mason continued his legendary status as a staple radio artist, riding the top rung of the many music charts with tunes like We Just Disagree, Let It Flow, All Along the Watchtower, Show Me Some Affection, and Something from the Heart.
A few years ago, Dave Mason and his wonderful band entered into the state of the art XM studios in Washington D.C., and recorded this new album Live at XM Satellite Radio. This unique session was performed organically in front of an intimate gathering of friends and fans. From start to finish, it is a solid 100% classic Dave Mason concert.
Things start off with a nod to his Alone Together album with the prog-rock classic World In Changes and his Delaney and Bonnie hit Only You Know and I Know. Mason's vocals and guitar styling are second to none as the crowd roars in approval.
We Just Disagree was Dave's most successful venture at Top 40 radio back in the late seventies. This emotional live reading brings back the memories of this era and skillfully shows the interplay between Mason and his good friend guitarist John Sambataro (Firefall, McGuinn Clark & Hillman). This track is indeed a defining moment of the show.
No Dave Mason concert is complete without the classics All Along The Watchtower, Traffic's Dear Mr. Fantasy and the surprise groover Feelin' Alright. His fans and new converts will agree, this new live offering will satisfy the classic rocker in all of us.
In addition to this pivotal live recording, Dave has gone into the vaults and found a very rare live interpretation of the Eagles classic Take It To The Limit. Recorded several years ago in the Orange County, California locale, this tune takes on a whole new feeling with the Dave Mason magic.
As a further gift to his fans, Dave has also included two new studio tracks that will truly enhance your listening experience. First, there is the very rare Dave Mason/Jim Capaldi duet of the classic 40,000 Headmen. Recorded shortly before his untimely death, Jim Capaldi truly sings his soul out on this revisit to the Traffic era. Dave shares on the vocal chores, as well as an incredible guitar workout throughout.
The intriguing closer, Deaf, Dumb And Blind, is one of those tunes that his fans have been clamoring years for. Dave's vocals are the ticket here, the amazing music he creates is still intact after four decades of recording, and like a fine wine, his career just gets better all the time. This tune will surely become one of his future classics.

same old dave.......2007-07-14
this is a nice recording of pretty much the same show dave has been doing for over twenty five+ years its to bad that he believes his audience has such a limited attention span and they only want to hear the hits. the man recorded some great solo albums in the seventies and sadly its been distilled to just this. the tracks with jim at the end are nice to have sadly he has passed on.....
Excellent Music from Dave Mason.......2007-07-13
Although advancing into his early 60s, Dave Mason continues to demonstrate his guitar and singing mastery inside and outside the studio. Like many fans, I long for a studio album of new songs from Mason. Not to disappoint, the Live at XM Satellite Deluxe Edition teases listeners with a haunting new studio-created song entitled Deaf, Dumb, and Blind. That song alone is worth the price of the album.
"Feelin' Alright" ? You'll be much better after this one!.......2007-06-29
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
"Live At XM Satellite Radio" captures Dave Mason's appearance on XM during 2004. The representation of many of his trademark songs, well-executed cover versions, terrific fidelity, and bonus tracks make this an easy decision.
Mason's ability has been taken for granted by some but those that have followed his career in and out of Traffic understand his excellence. "Only You Know And I Know", "We Just Disagree" and "Feelin' Alright" find Dave's voice in fantastic form. You can be fooled into thinking the versions are decades old by the clarity and conviction of the vocals.
"All Along The Watchtower" (Bob Dylan) lets Mason pay homage to his friend Jimi Hendrix. Jimi may hold the most well known cover version but Mason's should be right up there for the power and passion. Speaking of covers as a bonus track the Eagles tune "Take It To The Limit" is included from another venue.
If the CD only contained "40,000 Headmen" (Bonus Track - unreleased studio duet with Jim Capaldi) it should be proudly represented in the collection.
Mason is going to satisfy both the long time fan and the causal one. Those that have been on board for years will be immensely pleased how solid of a performance this is. For the fan that likes his better-known tunes, they will marvel how he can sound so superlative outside the confines of the recording studio.
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

DAVE MASON LIVE/STUDIO-ONE FROM THE VAULT .......2007-06-10
Dave Mason fans will enjoy this release of some of Mr. Mason's finest performed to a "live" studio audience a few years ago. Complete with classics from the Traffic staples Dear Mr. Fantasy, Feelin' Alright and 40,000 Headmen, as well as such solo favorites World in Changes, Only You Know And I Know and Look At You, Look At Me from "Alone Together" and the hit song We Just Disagree, plus Dave's rousing rendition of All Along The Watchtower, this is a nice addition to any Dave Mason fans' collections. Interviews with Dave in addition to three rare bonus tracks, including a live version of the Eagles' Take It To The Limit, round out the CD. The band is tight, the solos crisp and Mason's vocals are still more than adequate. Much better than any recycled "greastest hits" offerings we see so much nowadays from fading rockers.
Classic Rock's most underrated .............................2007-06-08
This cd, was recorded at XM radio's studio in 2004. It also has 3 bonus tracks, including the new "deaf, dumb and blind" The new song is reason enough to buy the cd. It's also climbing up the AC Charts.
In addition to the bonus tracks, we're served up some of the best material from Dave's history. The recording is sharp, the band is tight, Dave's vocals are better than ever, his guitar playing (on his RKS guitars)is amazing, and finally the songs are classics. Run, don't walk to add this to your collection. It will remain in your cd player for a long time.

Album Description
Novelist H. G. Bissinger's story about a high school football team in Texas went to the big screen with Billy Bob Thornton in the lead role. The score and background music was largely composed for the film by indie faves Explosions in the Sky, with a little help from Daniel Lanois, David Torn, and Bad Company. Producer Brian Reitzell has gone against convention in designing musical atmospheres for the film that don't conform either to the martial music generally associated with football or the C&W associated with Texas. Instead, he opted for a more autumnal, introspective sound that serves as a perfect backdrop for the film, but also stands up on its own without benefit of any other audio-visual cues.
Customer Reviews:
Good listen..........2006-04-08
If you want the great sounds you hear in the movie which gives it that emotion to go along with the ride this is the right disc. Whoever is talking about the Motley Crue and Poison songs can easily get that junk off the internet. I play it for my artists while they work all the time. Great disc.
Good Soundtrack-For those who don't know the band.......2006-03-17
Get this if you've never heard of Explosions in the Sky..Maybe, just maybe, you will be introduced to a new band that can do incredible things for you- that is if you have some sort of attention span, and respect for what beauty via audio would want to do for you!..If you are a fan however, and are looking for a good addition to your collection, steer clear, as the majority of the songs are variations on themes from their real, infinitly better albums..
This is a SOUNDTRACK.......2006-03-15
(Im going to start this by saying that the only reason that i gave it a four star instead of a five is because i dont like the other instrumental songs are inbetween EITS songs, because they are misleading. Not to mention the out of character Bad Company song....which i just couldnt get into, at all.)
If you are mad because this soundtrack doesnt have the songs from the movie, then you should have looked at the back of the album before you bought it, many soundtracks leave songs out of them, or add songs that were not in the film. True i dont believe that this lives up to the full potential of Explosions in the Sky, but it is not an EITS album, it is a soundtrack, so yeah they arent gonna play an 8-10 minute song, and thats also clear because there are 14 songs on the album, where every album by them contains from 5 to 7 tracks.
The stuff on the soundtrack is short, but it is solid, and very representative of their slow parts of their songs. I think if they tried to build and become as climactic as their other material it would only be an insult to their music. It takes time for the build up, and that makes the listener appreciate the intensity much more.
So if you like explosions in the sky, and you have all their albums, then buy this, because if you have an open mind and can see the amazing fact that a band like this would even agree to do something so out of character, i mean seriously this is a mainstream football movie, then you might be able to appreciate it. Or maybe its just not your thing, and that is completely understandable. But think about this, compare the soundtrack to this to Varsity Blues, i mean, c'mon, i was impressed.
FNL book review.......2006-03-14
Book Review
H.G Bissinger writes Friday Night Lights, which is about a football team in southern Texas. This book takes place in 1988 in Odessa, a town where high school football is the greatest source of entertainment and a town where football players dream.
This book is written like it was a documentary; it describes the town, the people the history, and the dreams. There was only two parts to Odessa and that was oil and Permian High football. Permian high football was known throughout Texas to have the highest winning percentage of all the teams in southern Texas. 20,000 people would go to a Permian high football game dress with Black and White (the Permian Panthers team colors) cheering MOJO MAGIC for the Panthers to win. Football means everything to the players and the fans.
This book takes awhile to get started; H.G Bissinger takes 2 chapters discussing the history of Odessa and the problems and struggles that happen to this town. It's not all that bad because it gives you a great detailed description of the town and the people who lived there. You also get to look at the 1988 Permian football team and the physical challenges and mental challenges it takes to play on this football team. They also had to deal with the expectations of the fans wanted to see the Permian football team win state. The fans would chant "Going to State in 88" because football meant everything to the fans as well as the senior players of the football team knowing this is their last year to win state.
When you read this book you need to understand that it is more about the town and how football plays a key role in Odessa. For example there were schools for minorities and schools for whites. The only reason why the schools in Odessa mixed was so the football team could have black athletes.
This book contains many details and events that happened in Odessa in 1988. This book was on of my favorites. Friday Night Lights give you a good description of the town that you actually feel like your actually there. If there is a book scale I give this book 9 out of 10. This is a really good book, but on the down side it very long.
Friday Night Lights Easy Read.......2006-03-14
Friday Night Lights is a very effective book describing the life of a football player at Permian high School. H.G. Bissinger really puts you right in Odessa, Texas were Permian High was located. The description of the players just sets you deeper into the story and getting to know every player made it seem like you were observing the entire Permian Tigers season in 1988.
Friday Night Lights is a nonfiction book because it is a true story and H.G. Bissinger wrote it as a journalist. A nonfiction book is fun to read because you know there is not going to be a perfect sequence of events but all unpredictable or else it would be a fairytale. The book is very realistic using specific information such as names and places. H.G. Bissinger's writing style is easy to enjoy but can get boring due to in-depth description of just about every player. The way the book was written you could never guess that H.G. Bissinger was not a football player but a journalist. Over all though Bissinger used a very simple writing style and nothing too complicated which made Friday Night Lights and easy read and who does not like that. He goes through all the major set backs and advancements that the Tiger encountered. This book did not make you feel like you were in Texas though just made you feel like you were in Permian High.
Friday Night Lights for me was a very good book because I play football. Friday Night Lights though is a very descriptive novel describing Permian High Football to the extremes, which makes it by far the best football book if not the best sports book ever written!

Album Description
When you think of bands like Buffalo Springfield, Poco, and Souther, Hillman and Furay, one name definitely links them all together: Richie Furay. Now, when you add the names Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Kenny Loggins, Timothy B. Schmidt, Rusty Young, etc. there is a stunning new album from Richie Furay that links these superstars all together called The Heartbeat Of Love.....12 great songs, a dozen rare performances from Furay and his friends bring that sound that we are all familiar with to this new cd.
The album opens with a fresh new track called Forever With You .Loaded with hooks and harmonic melodies, this tune gives the listener a welcome back feeling when they hear the wonderful voice of Richie Furay with a little help from his friends like Jeff Hanna from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
Timothy B. Schmidt lends a hand on My Heart Is Cryin' Tonight. One of those rich ballads that Richie is famous for, with lyrics that match the emotion of the vocal artistry of both singers "I know a love that is strong, will somehow carry on, But My Heart Is Cryin' Tonight."
Neil Young and Kenny Loggins chime in on the Buffalo Springfield/ Poco revisit of Kind Woman. After a recent tour with Linda Rondstadt, this song was truly one of the biggest crowd pleasers. This 2007 treatment has all of the qualities you would expect from this classic and more.
Another strong track, Callin' Out Your Name features Stephen Stills and Richie's daughter Jesse Furay. This is classic Furay. No matter which way you look at it, a hook-laden song, masterful harmonies and number one musicianship. This will be one of your favorite go to songs once you add this album to your collection.
The Heartbeat Of Love is Richie's first rock album in almost two decades. This is a definitive "worth waiting for" album, and it shows full circle his career in song with some of his most notable and famous friends from the past four decades. Enjoy!
Customer Reviews:
Great to Hear Richie Again.......2007-06-20
As the title states, most songs revolve around the subject of "love", but musically it is great listening and Richie sounds as good as ever. You would think this was from early Poco. It is a shame music like this does not receive more airplay.

This live recording from 1980 matched fusion guitar heavyweights Al DiMeola and John McLaughlin with Spanish guitar whiz Paco DeLucia. The result, a dazzling technical display, also earned jeers as the international summit of world-class finger-wigglers by critics who felt it was long on chops and short on heart. John McLaughlin's importance to the development of the jazz fusion scene can't be overestimated: as the guitarist on Miles Davis's seminal Bitches Brew and A Tribute to Jack Johnson, he was the first significant guitarist of the electric jazz era; on his own, he brought power rock, spiritualism, and lush orchestration to the scene via his Mahavishnu Orchestra. DiMeola, the most commercially successful next-generation fusion guitarist, achieved stardom with Chick Corea's group Return to Forever and on his own records. DeLucia, virtually unknown in the U.S., is a fine flamenco guitarist, and it is that orientation more than anything that colors Friday Night: even when playing straightforward non-flamenco compositions, the phrasing and sensibility lurks behind every note. Still, the passion of the music is frequently marred by the participants' inability to play at anything but the most breakneck pace. --Fred Goodman

WoW.......2007-04-25
Everytime I listen to this CD I come away with something new. I've been listening to this since the 80's and every time I get goosebumps. Three geniuses come together on a magical night and create this something that happens once in a lifetime. I've always thought it would be a great if the three could collaborate and write a book on their inspirations for doing this, how much did they *really* practice and such. It would an incredible read. Today my kids (8 and 10) were listening to this on my iPOD and were blown away!!!
The masters unite.......2007-03-11
The musicianship here is very professional and enjoyable - this is the only documented audio of these three guitar giants working together in concert. The performance was recorded live in December 1980, at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco. Track #5 is a studio recording, though, but nonetheless coherent and of spectacular quality in both sound and performance.
Throughout the album, all three guitar players (incidentally only playing in pairs on the three first tracks) perform on acoustic guitars, and for an early 80's live recording, the sound quality is surprisingly good (rich acoustics, no feedback, no distortion.) What ruins a lot of the listening experience, however, are the audience members who yell and scream and whistle and clap over some of the music as if they were high on all that currently is illegal to get high on. The wildness of the audience participation on track #2 is especially bothersome; as soon as the guitar players play a fast lick, an unusual effect, anything technically advanced or anything in unison, these people go crazy, and when recognizing an obvious installment of the theme from Pink Panther you can hear them wearing their anuses on their sleeves as they burst from rapture.
But the audience aside, this is an important recording for a lot of obvious reasons - a recording that you definitely should own or at least listen to if you have ever enjoyed any music performed or written by any of these three guitarists. Incidentally, Hal Leonard has produced a book of transcriptions of all titles from this recording.
Not a fan.......2007-02-06
This is a consert I just stumbled over an liked at once. Superb work of art. It has always been a joy to hear talented people get together and bring happines to the audience. Had this as LP but somebody or in moving things it became unplayable so getting a new copy was a must.
Subtly sweet, blazingly fast, and refreshing overall........2007-01-11
This album is what it is:a showcase of amazing musicianship and heartfelt playing between comrades. There are many beautiful and soft moments, and even more lightning-quick picking that cascades, ebbs, and flows. To say that the music on this album is simply a few guys trying to "one-up" each other is ludacris. This album is a joy to those whom delve into the emotions in musical art.
Guitar heaven.......2007-01-03
When you get a bunch of guitar virtuosos together, that usually adds up to a real snoozefest of lots of technical proficieny and zero tunefullness. So an all acoustic session would be even worse right? Wrong!
People can go on about the technical proficiency demonstrated by messrs. McLaughlin, Di Meola, and Delucia. But technical proficiency alone is not music. This, my friends, is music. Nominally, this is labeled as a jazz album but it really defies any genre. If you have even the slightest affinity for great guitar playing, plunk down your ten bucks and listen.

An Awesome Live Band, These guys Kill!!.......2007-07-05
I Am watching dvd Version of this Right Now, and Maroon 5 Are a Killer LIVE Band as well, as excellent Recording artist!! You will get 2 Discs with this package, 1 for Dvd Concert, and cd for Concert Songs. They Are both Awesome, is the only way to describe both!! And Just so you dont think im some teen age follower, im 32. They Appeal to anyone Regardless of Age in my Opinion! Of course most of these are the same songs from songs about jane album, but there all totally live, and the fact that you also get the Dvd is a no brainer! So if your fans and Dont have time to get to a concert, or just want the live version , Dont wait it is definetly worth the price!! Peace all.
great band, badly mixed.......2006-10-15
The dvd is good. I love their music and they perform with plenty of energy and emotion. It's good to see them stretch out musically on some of their songs. My complaint is with the CD. The music is poorly mixed. It seems to be a straight transfer of the dvd soundtrack, which any one with xillisoft or similar software could have done for themselves, although possibly not, given what previous reviewers have alerted us to about the copy protection software. Anyway, my point is that the cd hasn't been remixed for dedicated audio listening. As a result the crowd noise is way too loud all the way through every song. It is like listening to the cd in a room full of crickets and mosquitos, on a windy night next to a freeway by the ocean. The poor quality of the mix extends to the balancing of the instrument levels. In some songs the lead guitar sits out clear and strong and in others it is swamped by the rest of the band, robbing songs of their climactic moments.
A disappointing effort from a greaty band.
Great CD, Great concert.......2006-03-27
This is one awesome band, incredible musicians, the down and dirty lyrics remind me of some of the great R&B stuff back in the day. And Adam Levine's voice, you ain't gonna get him confused with anyone else.
The CD has been in my car's player since I took it out of the package. Like someone else said, I can play it over and over and not get tired of the music.
I hope these guys are around a long time
Content/ Copy-Protected CD - Rubbish.......2006-03-06
This spoilt it for me. I work away allot and couln't wait to download this on my ipod, which does actually copy, but the playback is messed up.
I bought this album and every other album I have on my Ipod and I should have the choice as to where I want to listen to it.
Secondly I hate the fact that it automtically installs software on my PC.
Don't buy it if you want to listen to it on you IPod.

This soundtrack is great...if you liked the music in the movie you'll love this album. I thought it was a nice mix of artists and styles. A fun cd to have in the car.
If you liked the movie..........2007-01-09
My 8-year-old daughter and I have seen the movie several times, which we love. The music is fun and something we can listen to together.
The soundtrack album is just as good as the movie!.......2006-06-15
If you thought the movie was good, the CD is really fun to listen to also! The album includes a mixture of pop and rock. Some of the songs become boring as the lyrics repeat often, but most of the songs you'll want to listen to over, and over again! Alot of the rock songs are heavy metal, and the pop music is generally very enjoyable to hear. I believe that this CD is appropriate for ALL ages, and I highly recommend you order this album!
good musics in this CD.......2006-03-18
I bought this CD because I love the movie!!
And the musics were sooo good!!!
Music lovers will absouletly love it♡
Fabulous!.......2005-10-28
I had the decision of trying to find a few soundtracks to purchase through a gift certificate, and I chose this one as well as "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen". This has a lot of the rock genre on it, and was absolutely awesome - it was definitely worth the money! (But I think that "Confessions" isn't worth the money; just buy the singles on it that are worth the money through iTunes or something.)

If you like your Wagner served up in bleeding chunks or if you're simply in a hurry to hear the tunes, then this compilation is for you. The performances, drawn from the Polygram (mainly Deutsche Grammophon) back catalog, are for the most part authoritative. They feature the likes of Herbert von Karajan, with the Berlin Philharmonic, and Karl Böhm, with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra (and chorus), in extracts from recordings of complete operas, and conductors Giuseppe Sinopoli, Otto Gerdes, and Antal Doráti in some of the more familiar overtures and preludes. Singing, without which it is impossible to get the full flavor of Wagner's work, is skirted whenever possible: this is an unapologetic tribute to Wagner the orchestral genius. At times the salesmanship is a little overblown--the glitzy packaging includes a cover shot of the helicopters from Apocalypse Now--and the sound, some of it from very good originals, seems to have been juiced with a little added digital reverb, resulting in an overall glassiness. The gaps between tracks are minimized, disco style, so there's no dead air, and the whole thing has an Entertainment Tonight feel to it. Were he around, Wagner would have screamed bloody murder, then happily taken his cut of the action. For today's on-the-go listener, this may well be the most practical way to enjoy Wagner's music, but we won't be happy until it motivates at least one newcomer to seek out a recording of a complete opera. Anyone who does that will find out what "apocalypse" really means. --Ted Libbey
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful collection and price!.......2007-05-11
I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!
Awesome collection!.......2007-01-10
This is a great collection of some of Wagner's most memorable songs for those of you who do not want to buy the whole opera's for some of his works.
Helicopters? Marines?.......2006-12-05
Do those infotainment marketing mavens ever get it right? Talk about Hollywood disconnect! Not only are the helicopters irrelevant, but to quote from the gushy drivel on the jacket, "The gripping power of Richard Wagner's music was demonstrated with spectacular effect in...Apocalpse Now, when the "Ride of the Valkyries' became synonymous with the chilling journey of Marine 'Huey' helicopters into battle..."
Marine? Marine? Them Hueys in the movie was ARMY Air Cav, slick! "First of the ninth--air mobile." If you're going to dally down that primrose path, at least get it right.
Better yet, drop the choppers. Most people who listen to Wagner probably realize that quality of an artistic work has a mystically inverse relationship to the number of helicopters contained in it.
As for the music, it is good, but the operatic equivalent of sound bites, which may be just right for people who are new to Wagner or just can't take very much of him. Hmm...perfect for a helicopter ride, perhaps?
A great addition to my music collection.......2006-07-20
This CD takes the place of all my other Wagner music. VERY well done. Somehow I didn't realize that there were two cds in the package--what a pleasant surprise! Of the two cds, I like the first one best, but they are both good. I listen to this cd daily on my way to work. Stirring! I am so glad that I purchased this. Some purists might have a problem with the fact that some of the selections are not there in their entirety. I have no problem with that though. I recommend this to anyone who loves Wagner.
Quintessential Wagner.......2006-05-15
Okay, so I like Wagner. I LOVE "Ride Of The Valkyries". Do I want to go out and buy every single stinkin thing Wagner did? No. If you are a die-hard Wagner fan you probably will not think much of this collection.
But if you like Wagner and appreciate "Ride Of The Valkyries", and maybe require it in just a little more substance than what is included in "Apocolypse Now Redux", then this is what you want. The extra tracks are bonuses and are quite good. Meets my needs, presentation great, performance excellent. I recommend it for anyone that needs a Wagner fix.

Very peaceful music.......2007-06-11
I generally work for long hours at my computer and it can be stressful, I read the review for this cd , because one of my customers ( I manage Bolivia Stores at Amazon) wrote a review about this cd same as he wrote a review for one of my teas and I was very intrigued because he is a very religious person that lived in Bolivia with the Peace Corp, well... The price was great and I decided to ordered it...... I just love it, it takes away the stress of a long day !
It sound a bit boring in the beginning but once you get caught for the music is just peace all around!!

The CD was delivered within the time stated and is as advertized ... good
Answer to a prayer.......2007-04-05
I have been frantically searching for a cd with some of the old Good Friday Gregorian chants I remembered from my childhood. I planned to play it as background music for our Good Friday service at a home for the elderly. I ran a search on Amazon and this was the first cd that popped up. I ordered it, thinking it would probably not arrive in time for the service. What a pleasant surprise to have it in such a short time and at such a low price. Beautiful music that would be worth purchasing at ten times the asking price.
Good Value.......2007-04-04
This collection of chants offers something for various seasons of the church year. The chants are well done, and they are useful for meditation purposes.
A good introduction to Gregorian Chant.......2007-03-29
This is a great way to be introduced to Gregorian chant, both for its quality and its low price.
