5 out of 5 stars Family Force 5 -- A Force to be Reckoned with..........2007-06-26

Family Force 5 delivers an onslaught from the first second to the very end. It's a wall of sound from start to finish that is some of the most fun you're likely to ever hear (unless they ever release an equally good sophomore album, etc).

This is the perfect crank-it-up, piss off your neighbors, head-banging kind of music. And it's great to scream along to.

5 out of 5 stars What I've Been Looking For!.......2007-05-11

This cd is exactly what I have been looking for. Nice crunchy guitars, upbeat, and clean vocals. I just picked it up today, and I couldn't help but put my window down and turn the stereo up. I'm pushing 40, and this cd made me feel like I was in high school again. Great, great fun disc.

5 out of 5 stars best cd ever.......2007-05-08

i listen to this cd every single day. family force five is the absolute best!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Its GREAT!.......2007-05-07

Family Force 5 is one of the best bands out there! their music is super catchy and you'll wanna sing it all day long... I DO! Before I had heard FF5 I didnt really like the loud upbeat music, but these guys were just so good I couldnt help but wanna hear them again and again! so I bought the CD. Trust me if you are fun, crazy, and loud you will LOVE this CD!!!

4 out of 5 stars So I thought the 3 new tracks deserved a try..........2007-03-29

Before Diamond Edition came out, I had purchased their previous album containing all of the tracks off of Diamond Edition with the exception of 3. I purchased this new one mostly because I had found their music so catchy, and perhaps 3 new tracks would give me something new by them to listen to. What first was odd to me is the album art. Amazon displays a large black album art with a sparkly Family Force 5 logo. I opened up my package to find that mine did as well, but it's just wrapping that packages the CD case and you have to actually take that off. So all of a sudden I am introduced to a new album art: a red background, and a skull and crossbones (the crossbones being keyboards of some sort). I was surprised that Amazon wouldn't display the actual album art. Anxious to hear the 3 new tracks, I immediately popped the CD into my player. I have a quick review of each of the 3 tracks:

I Love You to Death - Cool guitaring, lyrics are a bit repetitive and cheesy, but the beat is really catchy. I'd give this one a 4/5.

Face Down - This is the song that I can't seem to get into. It doesn't sound much like Family Force 5 at all. I have listened to it many times to see if it would grow on me. It mostly seems like a filler song. I'd give it a 2/5.

Never Let Me Go - This is probably my favorite of the 3. Very catchy vocals and effects. Guitaring sounds great. Chorus is fun. Definitely a cool beat. Overall, 5/5.

Hope this helps anyone who has purchased Business Up Front, Party in the Back in the past and basically wants to know if 3 new tracks is worth the cash. I'd say I'm satisfied overall. It's great to hear something new from them.

Arriving out of Atlanta like high school sophomores who stole mom's car to hit spring break in Daytona Beach, the 3 brothers and 2 others of Family Force 5 deliver their debut, Business Up Front/Party In The Back. Without a doubt the focus here is on the "party", as most of the record is devoted to getting down, chasing girls ("Drama Queen" sounds like it was written by a 14 year old who just got dumped), and driving around with the radio blasting. Not that there's anything wrong with these things, but the band comes off more like Limp Bizkit's smart-ass little brother than a bunch of kids on a tear.

No one would accuse FF5 of over-thinking their music and lyrics--when your album title is a.k.a. a mullet, intellectualism probably isn't your highest priority. Overall, the album seems genetically engineered to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, piled high with 80's synths, rap/rock riffs and shout-along refrains, and name-checking everything from break dancing to Speak & Spells. In the end, trying this hard causes the FF5 to wear out their welcome. It's only when the band drops the catchy chorus on "Kountry Gentleman" or "Love Addict", you may just find yourself speeding down the highway, bobbing your head a little despite your better judgement. --Ben Heege

Album Description

Straight out of the Nu South, Family Force 5 is greazy, beat oriented, righteous Crunk Rock with blistering New Wave guitars and gritty-witty lyrics. Combining Outkast with Rage Against the Machine, Beastie Boys with the White Stripes, Family Force 5 won two awards-Best Band and Best Live Act-and was nominated for two others at the second annual Atlanta Music Guide Awards in September. Now FF5 redefines the Dirty South with its debut major label album, Business Up Front/Party in the Back.

4 out of 5 stars no business, all party.......2007-04-29

I love this CD! One of the most fun discs I have ever heard. Great to work out to, great to drive to, great for a pick-me-up. I only gave it a 4 because it never goes very deep, though there are a few songs that have a somewhat deeper meaning if you read into them. I hope they make more CD's; they certainly have talent.

5 out of 5 stars You, too, will become addicted!!!.......2007-02-13

I first heard of FF5 while working in a Christian book/music store when I heard "Luv Addict" playing over the sound system. That song just stuck with me and I was hooked, so I bought the CD. WOW!!!!!!! Repeat after me: "I will buy this CD, I will buy this CD!" If you do not buy this CD, you are really missing out. Even as a 36-year old mother of 3, I absolutely love this music. It is so fresh and just good plain fun. And if you are looking for some great music to work out to...look no further! I am a runner and listening to this music has helped me increase my time because it really gets the adrenaline pumping!! Also, I love the messages in "Luv Addict" and "Replace Me". Last night I found myself worshipping God so deeply and dancing so energetically while listening to these songs that today I have the worst sore neck!! Consider yourself warned...you will not be able to sit still while listening to FF5. Inevitably, you will become a headbanger!! I love this band and I love the fact that they are Christians, and also that their music will cross over to anyone who just plain loves great music. Trust me, this CD will appeal to all types of music fans and is an absolute must-buy!!

5 out of 5 stars Get up and dance!.......2007-01-10

If you are looking for a cd to get you outta your chair and moving, this is it. You can't help but blast every song and dance in your seat while you are driving, which tends to cause strange looks from other motorists! If they owned this cd, they would be doing the same thing! FF5 is a great band out of ATL with a Christian background. I first heard them on Sirius channel 67 (Revolution) and had to have the cd. It was worth every penny and I never have to worry about what kind of message the kids are getting from the music.

5 out of 5 stars Great music, fun band.......2007-01-06

This is a CD that everyone in my house loves. I am a 42 year old man who grew up on on AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, etc. My wife loves U2, Third Day, Lifehouse, etc, my 15 year old daughter loves Coldplay, Switchfoot, etc, my younger boys love DCTalk and TobyMac.... but WE ALL LOVE THIS CD!!! It is fun, it is funny, and the music kicks butt. Really. Buy it, you will like it and these guys deserve our support.

5 out of 5 stars Can't help but Dance!.......2006-11-29

This group is one of the most unique, awesome, different bands I've ever heard! If you're tired of the same old depressing music get this CD and I promise you won't be able to stop yourself from dancing!!! And just when I thought they couldn't get any better I find out they're a Christian Band!!! Warning: If listening to this CD in the car exspect getting some wierd looks from people as you rock out driving past! But don't let that stop you! ROCK OUT!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-08-06

This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2005-06-29

First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.

In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.

In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.

If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

4 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21

I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.

5 out of 5 stars "Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30

This review is by Crosley.

I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.

There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.

I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.

5 out of 5 stars A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16

There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.

This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.

My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

3 out of 5 stars This is what happens when great groups breakup..................2006-11-18

The landscape of rap had changed dramatically in the 5 years that EPMD was broke up. Due to the major drama in hiphop that went down in the preceding 12 months, E & the P decided to make amends and drop another joint. This joint is just okay. Nothing like the 4 classic joints that dropped between 88 and 92.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best ever.......2006-03-19

i would have to say when this album came out I bought it because of the "Never Seen Before" single. I was immediately impressed from the first track to the end. If you like hip-hop this album is a must have. When this came out I listened to nothing but gangsta rap
and this enlightened me to other genres of rap

4 out of 5 stars Appropriately Titled.......2005-10-15

Back in Business was a welcome return. It didn't try too hard to blow our minds. It's not over-produced. There are, arguably, no anthems. EPMD's chemistry still holds. Misogyny is kept to a minimum. The Public Enemy cover is bomby!

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - Erick & Parrish Making Dollars.......2004-11-19

Erick Sermon & Parrish Smith team back up after taking 5 years off to do another great Group album. Pioneers in Hip Hop, the two got together again and made a great album. It has 2 classic songs, and 3 ok ones, with the others all being quality. Features Def Squad cronies: Redman & Keith Murray as well as Das EFX and Nocturnal. No weak tracks and great production (as always from the Green Eyed Bandit), this album, although short (only 46+ minutes with interludes), it is a great album and a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Masters.......2002-12-22

I agree with whomever said that this CD is their best since "Strictly Business" and it's definitely as good as ''Business Never Personal" which also went gold and had some of their best tracks, rhymes and samples on it. (The Headbangers)

Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith both born in 1968 have been around since the early days of hip-hop, and they are not old and tired either, they did their first major album when they were only 18 years old!! They bring their hip-hop longevity, underground sound, and old school rap flow to this CD which is typical EPMD; uncut funk samples and a very non-commercial sound. I guess some people who gave it a bad review can't understand their artistic vision and musical integrity. The one BASIC thing about EPMD is how consistent they've been... with four gold albums to their credit. They are even more influential than that.

These saavy veterans are called EPMD, it stands for (Erick and Parrish Making Dollaz) and they flex madd skills and fresh game on this CD. They bring hot raps and much revitalized energy to this new set of awesome, perfectly selected samples from the "Joys of Funk" production, a.k.a. Erick "Funk Lord" Sermon who has produced (Redman, Method Man, Scarface, Too Short and many others) AND many tracks used first by EPMD were used later by: Run-DMC, JAY-Z, DR. DRE, LL COOL J, DMX, Warren G, and others.

On this CD they are using hot old school funk tracks by Zapp, Tom Browne, Rick James, and Slave, but you gotta be old school to notice that. All you youngsters better listen up and learn from the masters...'cause this is how rap should be done.

FYI: To you new jacks to the hip-hop world who think they know sumthin'....THERE WOULD BE NO: REDMAN, KEITH MURRAY, MOBB DEEP, DAS EFX OR K-SOLO WITHOUT EPMD!!

3 out of 5 stars Pretty decent Soundtrack........................2006-03-24

Unlike most soundtracks, which seem to only have a collection of various artists' leftover tracks, the "Barbershop 2: Back in Business" (2004) soundtrack is a decent fifteen track release.

Mary J. Blige and Eve start the album off strong with "Not Today" a nice collaboration. Next Outkast hook up with Sleepy Brown and deliver the upbeat love song "I Can't Wait", good to see Andre rhyming again, though its Sleepy smooth vocals that are the highlight of this cut for me. Chingys cut is skip material for me, then the Clipse deliver "Pussy", a decent track with a banging beat. Eve and Keyshia Cole deliver an upbeat R & B/rap collaboration with "Never". G-Unit's
"Unconditionally" comes next, not really feeling the hook to this track though 50, Banks and Buck come across okay.

Olivia sings over a Lil Jon beat on "All", not really feeling this cut, maybe because I like the original more. Mos Def and floetry deliver a laidback cut with "Wanna B Where U R". I was looking forward to Mobb Deep's "One of Ours", but Mobb don't come through with anything special on this one (hopefully there saving those cuts for there album). I had never heard of the female rapper known as Morgan Smith up until this release, her collaboration with 3LW is good. Spitfiya and R & B singer Anthony Hamilton deliver a standout collaboration with "Make it Home", this ones my favorite track at the moment. This is actually first time I have heard Spitfiya, what I like is he shows hunger in his rhymes. Keke Wyatt and Avant close off the album with the calm "Your Precious Love" which sounds like one of those old love songs back in the day.

This was a good CD but some of the songs in the film aren't on the soundtrack like that Tupac song and "C'mon" - Mystikal feat. Iron, that's the track with the people dancing in the subway. But Thanks to PPV and my DVR, here's the song list from the credits and who it was *performed* by (unless otherwise noted). =)

2 out of 5 stars Typical problem when buying music.......2005-10-11

The sequel is not as good as the first, but still pretty good. The soundtrack is fairly average in the way that only 2 or 3 songs (out of 15) are worth listening to. One of the good things that I have recently discovered about Amazon.com with regard to music, is that you can listen to a 30 second snippet of each song. That could have caused me to rethink my purchase.

2 out of 5 stars To "a music fan"--the "no rap until after 12pm song".......2005-09-26

With the help of my son, I found out that the song is called "thug in u thug in me" by tupac. The album is called "Until the End of Time". I liked the song, too, which is what made me look for it on the Barbershop 2 soundtrack.

2 out of 5 stars Issac's song so sad its not featured on the soundtrack.......2005-09-10

I too like all of u searched for that cool little jam that plays while issac is showing off in the barbershop well here it is I have found it and guess what? Its here availible on amazon.com ! The song is : Lose your mind by Bubba Sparxxx and its track #3 on the CD titled: Back in the Mud (cd single ).

2 out of 5 stars Song while Isaac is showing off..........2005-07-05

In response to someone's previous question.

the name of the song while Isaac is cutting hair (and cuts an "i" in the back of that dude's head) is "i'm back" by marshall mathers

4 out of 5 stars Go see her live!!.......2006-07-05

I bought this album after a fantastic live show. The theme of the show was 'you can have me if you're a millionaire'. Unfortunately, I'm nowhere near a millionaire, but I was completely in love with this woman over twice my age. She still has the ways of a catwoman. After the show, which was so seductive and thrilling, the album was a bit disappointing. It's not a bad album at all, but it doesn't have as much spirit or byte as her live appearance. But I must say 'Let's Misbehave' is beautiful, especially the beginning with only the bass and miss Kitt's voice. And it's that voice which makes even the classic 'The Nearness Of You' much more than just an evergreen. I would recommend to go see her live, if you have the chance. And then buy the album anyway, just to remind you how great she is.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch Artistry In Business.......1999-11-11

Without further explanation, Eartha Kitt is by far the most versatile and exciting artist of the last 4 decades. "Back in Business" is an offering that most fans have been hanging for and she doesn't disappoint. Adopting the comtemporary sounds of laid-back lounge jazz with live musicians, Eartha is again in control of the entire set by creating her trademark presence that translates well even on disc. Her voice remains forward and intimate throughout. No over-production or excess reverb to drown her out. You can almost feel her singing to you, like you are listening to a personal live performance. Hightlights include her seductive whisper in "Let's misbehave", the sung-spoken "Speak Low" and the deeply touching "Here's To Life". All songs are delivered with top notch confidence, with the trademark Eartha stamp purred all over them. Highly recommended for intimate nights alone or accompanied. "Back in Business" was nominated for a Grammy in 1994.

    Product Description

It has become something of a cliche in recent years for marketing children's music releases as "music for kids that parents will also like". Cliche or not, Monkey Business may be the ultimate example of that description, with sophistication in its musicianship and lyricism that belies its apparent simplicity and accessibility. This album is rich in flavors and nuances, and grows more endearing with repeated listens. The beautiful breather song "Don't Bother Any Butterflies" makes a clever reference to The Beatles, and the Fab Four's sense of memorability and musical depth is an evident influence on Monkey Business. And yet, the music is still completely original and fresh, and doesn't merely cop the styles of its influences. Half of the songs on Monkey Business feature words written by or with the renowned funny poetry author Kenn Nesbitt. Inventive, energetic and sophisticated while still being fully accessible for kids, and above all a lot of fun, Monkey Business is truly a landmark album in the children's music genre.

    5 out of 5 stars Quirky Fun.......2006-09-22

My kids love to listen to music. They also love to laugh. Combine the two and you're talking audio gold in my house. Eric Herman does just that on his Monkey Business CD. a hilarious collection of songs about monkeys, pirates, tongue twisters, and prune juice. Yes, prune juice.

I gave his disc the ol' family car workout to see what the kids would think. The sudden silence from the backseat meant they're interested. Continued silence meant they like it. A request to "hear it again" and we knew that it's a keeper.

The thing they seem to like most about this CD is Herman's oddball sense of humor. Even the grownups in the car had to laugh at such lyrics as "A pirate without treasure is like a monkey without a spatula." Or the boy pretending to be a robot who suffers a system malfunction when his mom asks him to clean his room.

Not every song has a punchline. After a funny sketch about a math gameshow, Herman slows things down with two beautiful lullabies that show off his chameleon-like vocal talents. But it's the previous dozen songs that my kids keep asking for, especially one of the best pirate songs I've ever heard.

Like so many of the very best children's CDs, these are tunes that even parents can listen to on a long road trip or during clean-up time at home. From the polished production to Herman's pleasing voice (which reminded me of Glen Phillips at times) to the clever lyrics, there's something here for kids of all ages.
